When I first heard about Summit Learning, I admit I was not a bit excited. I thought it would lower my interactions (互动) with others. But when I got to experience it firsthand, I was surprised.
Recently, we did a poetry project, and one of the activities was a partner review. I would never have taken part if it was up to me, as I prefer to work independently. But when I got involved, I found the experience had done something I thought nearly impossible—it made my poem better. My partner informed me of my mistakes and told me where I could give more details.
One of our final products of the project was to present our poem to the class. I’ve always loved public speaking, but I thought with Summit Learning I would have fewer chances to speak. I was wrong. The activities we did with a partner gave me an extra push of confidence and inspired me to do more to make my presentation the best it could possibly be.
Interactions like these are what Summit Learning is all about. This style of learning brings a positive, hard-working culture that allows you to push your limits and keep going. It creates a sense of community, since we are all working towards a similar goal.
I have always been ahead and advanced, but in a normal classroom there are limits on what you can do. With Summit Learning, I can go beyond expectations in projects or move ahead in learning new content when I’m ready. I have ownership of my work and work towards my goals.
Summit Learning has showed me how much people can grow and change. It has helped me see people and myself differently. It has been one of the greatest experiences of my life, and I cannot see myself back to a “normal” classroom.
4. What was the author’s first response to Summit Learning
A. He was eager to take part. B. He was anxious to show up.
C. He was ready to give up. D. He was unwilling to attend.
5. How did the poetry project benefit the author
A. It improved his poem and confidence. B. It reminded him to be independent.
C. It gave him a chance to speak publicly. D. It gave him a sense of responsibility.
6. What can be inferred about Summit Learning
A. It highlights poetry. B. It transforms the learning style.
C. It values individuality. D. It teaches public presentation.
7. How does the author find Summit Learning now
A. Rigid. B. Challenging.
C. Inspiring. D. Normal.

No business would welcome being compared to gambling (赌博). Yet that is what is happening to makers of video games. For years parents have complained that their children are “addicted” to their video games and smartphones. Today, however, even more doctors are using the term. On January 1 this year, “gaming disorder” — in which games are played uncontrollably, despite causing harm — gained recognition from the World Health Organization (WHO).
Are games really addictive Psychologists have different opinions. Those who don’t think so say that this is just another moral panic. Similar warnings have been given about television, rock’n’roll, jazz, comic books, novels and even crossword puzzles, but it turns out that they are not as harmful as expected.
However, supporters argue that game developers have the motivation and the means to design their products to make them extremely attractive. For one thing, the business- model has changed: In the old days, games were bought once and for all. But these days, games are free and money is earned from buying of in-game goods, which ties playtime directly to profit they make. For another, game-makers combine psychological theory and data, which helps them maximize the playtime. Smart phones and modern video game machines use their permanent Internet connections to send gameplay data back to developers. In this way products are constantly adjusted to encourage players’ spending. The biggest spenders are known as “whales”, a term that originated in casinos (赌场).
The gaming industry should realize that, in the real world, it has a problem, and that problem is growing. Now that gaming addiction comes with an official WHO recognition, diagnoses will become more common. Anyway, being put together with gambling in the public mind, fairly or not, will not do the industry any good.
8. What do we know from Paragraph 1
A. It is not suitable to compare video games to gambling.
B Parents complain about their children’s addiction to gambling.
C. Gaming addiction was officially recognized as a disease.
D. More doctors are against the use of the term “addicted”.
9. What does the underlined words “moral panic” in Paragraph 2 mean
A. Unexpected addiction caused by science and technology.
B. Wrong judgment on how harmful something is.
C. Trouble caused by someone’s immoral behavior.
D. A shocking statement of the unexpected panic.
10. What do games developers do to make games attractive
A. They don’t charge players for in-game goods.
B. They keep players’ video game machines updated.
C. They reward big spenders with a unique title.
D. They adjust products based on received data.
11. In the last paragraph, the author aims to _______.
A. offer a suggestion B. make a prediction
C. give a warning D. put forward a solution
D
Our teenagers are lonely. A new study by Harvard’s Making Caring Common (MCC) shows just how that feeling has been common and become serious during the past year when we had to keep the social distance. One year’s online learning and life in the bedrooms rather than the classrooms or dorm rooms can make teenagers feel lonelier than before. Teenagers have been more likely to be influenced by loneliness than older adults.
Experiencing loneliness is certainly sad, but it is also perilous. Researchers found that 63% of the young were suffering from bad sleep, anxiety, and poor health during the lockdown(活动限 制 ) and that nearly a quarter had started or increased some bad habits, including smoking, drinking and staying up late to deal with their feelings.
About half of the young people in the study, who said they had felt lonely, explained that over the past weeks not one person had taken more than just a few minutes to ask how they had been lately. It made them feel they had no one who really cared about them. Their parents thought they had much free time after lessons and it seemed that they only worried whether their children could perform their schoolwork at the level they once did. They didn’t know the problem.
Sian Leah Beilock, the president of Barnard College, explains that young people depend on social media, which makes them especially weak to social media’s harms. She also suggests that fewer close friends may explain some of the feelings of loneliness. She reports that in 1985 the average American had three close friends with whom they could share important things about their lives. In 2004, that number had dropped to just two friends. And in 2019. one in five millennials(千禧一代) had no friends at all.
These levels of loneliness are heartbreaking. MCC suggests, as a nation, we first should focus on teaching the young to make meaningful connections between people and support them.
12. What is the finding of MCC’S study
A. Every teenager has lonely moments.
B. Parent-child communication becomes less.
C. Teenagers care too much about others’ opinions.
D. Lockdown lifestyles increase teenagers’ loneliness.
13. What does the underlined word “perilous” in Paragraph 2 probably mean
A. Dangerous. B. Funny. C. Helpful. D. Uncommon.
14. What do the young people’s words in the study mean
A. Their parents misunderstood them.
B. They found their schoolwork heavy.
C. They needed more care and attention.
D. Their online courses made them bored.
15. Which of the following may Sian Leah Beilock agree with
A. Teenagers are short of outdoor exercise.
B. Teenagers should make more close friends in real life.
C. Teenagers enjoy developing close relationships online.
D. Teenagers should avoid sharing important things online.
