Every English learner needs to know how to ask for something in English. There are a number of ways to do this. If you know someone has something, you can ask for it with a polite question. If you don’t know, it’s possible to ask for something with a yes or no question. Be careful not to use the direct expressions. In other words, don’t say “Give me that”, but ask kindly as the following examples, “Do you have a pen I could borrow?”“Is there any wine?” “Did you buy any bread?”
If you know or see someone has something, ask a polite question with “could” “may” or “might”. It’s also possible to use “can” in some special situations. In the past, “can” was not used when asking for something, but meant ability. In the UK, people mainly use “Can you lend me...?” or “Can I have...?” In the USA, this is still considered to be wrong and “May I have...?” is preferred.
It’s common to use “Could you lend/hand/give...?” Here are a lot you can use: “May/Can I borrow...?” “Could/Can you lend me...?” “May I have...?” “Could you hand/give me...?” Do not begin a sentence with “please”, but you can add “please” at the end of the sentence to be polite.
( )21. What can we ask if we know someone has something?
A. A direct question. B. A yes or no question. C. A polite question.
( )22. What can Lucy say politely if she wants some coffee?
( )23. Which of the following is a correct polite expression according to the passage?
A. Do you give me any milk, please?B. Please could you lend me your ruler?
C. May I have some tea, please?
( )24. What’s the main idea of the passage?
A. How to express or ask politely. B. What to do when we are polite.C. How to describe our ideas.

Asking for directions is the first thing we do when we arrive in a new place or even when we are just trying to find a place. Knowing how to ask for them can make our life much easier!
Use greetings(问候语) and polite expressions. Starting the conversation with a greeting is necessary. If you want to get a nice answer, begin by saying “hello” first. And some words like “may” “can” and “could” will help you express yourself better.
Build your words. You should know the basic(基本的) words when asking for directions. It may be useful to remember some famous places. Then try to use the right words when asking for a direction.
Get to know the transportation system(交通系统). Sometimes, it can happen that you are still far from your place. Which kind of public transportation should you choose? You might ask like this, “Is it far? Do I need to take the bus or the subway there?”
Don’t be afraid of using symbols. Every city in the world has its own symbols. You can decrease search time if you know what the most important symbols are in the city. Your place might be around the symbols.
Don’t be too shy to ask. Learn to relax if you get lost somewhere. We all do that now and then, especially when visiting a new city. But always make sure you can ask others for help!
( )25. Which of the following expressions may not help you when asking for directions?
A. May I ask... B. Could you please... C. Tell me...
( )26. What does the underlined word “decrease” mean in Chinese?
A. 增加 B. 减少 C. 浪费

B. Knowing some famous places is useful when asking for a direction.
C. Most people seldom get lost when visiting a new city.

A. How to ask for directions B. Why we should ask for directions

Giving Directions in Different Places
If you ask people of different countries “Could you tell me the way to the post officе?”, you will get different answers.
In Japan, people use landmarks (地标) instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. 29. The post office is across from the bus stop.”
In Kansas, America, there are no towns or buildings within miles. So instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distance. For example, people will say, “Go north two miles. 30. ”
People in Greece sometimes do not even try to give directions. They will often say, “Follow me.” 31. Sometimes if а person doesn’t know the answer to your question, he or she, like а New Yorker, might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.”But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” 32. Theу usually give an answer, but often a wrong one. A visitor can often get lost in Yucatan! 33. You might not understand a person’s words, but maybe you can understand his or her body language.

“How are you?” is a nice question. It’s a friendly greeting that people in the United States use. However, it’s a question that often doesn’t need an answer. The person who asks “How are you?” expects to hear the answer “Fine.” even if the person isn’t fine. They are common ways of saying “hello” or “hi”.
Sometimes, people don’t say exactly what they mean. For example, when someone asks “Do you agree?” the other person may be thinking, “No, I don’t. I think you’re wrong.” It isn’t polite to disagree very strongly, so he might say, “I am not so sure.” This is a nicer way to say that you don’t agree with someone.
