第二部分:阅读理解(共两节,满分40分)
第一节(共10小题:每小题2.5分,满分25分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。
A
In addition to applying for a traditional guide dog, the visually impaired (有视觉障碍的) people will soon have another option to help with their daily life — a robot guide dog.
About the size of an English Bulldog but a bit wider, the six-legged robot guide dog from Shanghai Jiao Tong University’s School of Mechanical Engineering can navigate (导航) users to destinations without running into barriers. It also has voice interaction functions and can recognize traffic light signals. With cameras, sensors, and AI technology, the robot dog can see, listen, and speak with users on daily journeys outside and be a companion at home. Professor Gao Feng, the head of the research team at SJT U, points out that with six legs, the robot guide dog can walk smoothly with high stability. “Even if three legs are raised, the structure still has three points of contact with the ground, creating a very stable base,” Gao said. He adds that operators can use a cane (手杖) to control the walking and running speed of the robot.
In China, there are currently about 17.31 million visually impaired people, yet only around 400 guide dogs are available due to high training costs. People have to wait for a long time after applying for one.
Unlike traditional dogs, the production of robot guide dogs could be scaled, especially in a major manufacturing center like China. “It’s a bit like cars. We can mass-produce them in the same way as cars so that it will become more affordable,” Gao said. “This could be a huge market because tens of millions of people might need guide dogs.”
Li Fei, among the visually impaired people participating in the field test, believes such high technology will likely change their lives soon. “The research teams are thoughtful and are continuously making improvements,” Li said. “The robot dog is electronic, making it easier to get into public places than traditional guide dogs. I will probably try the robot guide dog when it becomes available. They can be precise and reliable as they seldom make subjective mistakes.”
1. What do we know about the robot guide dog
A. It is smaller than an English Bulldog. B. It can identify traffic light signals.
C. It relies on AI technologies to move. D. It can interact with other robot guide dogs.
2. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The potential market for robot guide dogs.
B. The high cost of training traditional guide dogs.
C. The difficulty of applying for a robot guide dog.
D. The standard of mass-producing robot guide dogs.
3. What can we infer about the robot guide dog according to Li Fei
A. It has been widely available to the public. B. It needs further improvement in accuracy.
C. It will benefit visually impaired people a lot. D. It will replace traditional guide dogs in the future.
B
The human voice is a delicate thing. Each person’s distinctive sound is produced when air from the lungs causes the vocal cords (声带) to vibrate. These vocal cords can easily get damaged. According to a 2005 study, 30% of the population will experience a voice disorder at some point in their life.
In a study published in the journal Nature Communications this week, a group of bioengineering researchers from the University of California have put forward an attractive solution. They have designed and tested a soft patch, that can be stuck onto a person’s neck, where it will pick up muscle movements and, with the help of machine-learning algorithms (算法) that process the signals, translate them into speech.
When a person loses their voice today, the easiest fix is to turn to typing, texting, or writing notes to communicate. Typing can be slow and inconvenient, says Jun Chen, the paper’s lead author, and writing notes is only possible in good lighting. The new solution would theoretically be able to clear all these hurdles.
Dr. Chen’s device works based on something called the magnetoelastic effect. Essentially, when tiny magnetic (磁性的) bits are placed into soft materials, their magnetic properties can change as the material is stretched.
When the throat muscles move under the soft patch, the resulting magnetic-field variations can be changed into electrical signals...In a test with eight participants, the researchers recorded the signals as “the subjects spoke and mouthed five different sentences. They then trained a machine-learning model which was then able to predict which of the five sentences the participants spoke — whether aloud or in silence — with more than 90% accuracy.
There is a way to go yet, for now the revice can only recognize the five phrases it was trained on. Plus, to make it practical at scare the researchers will need to collect a lot more data.
4. Why does the author mention the magnetoelastic effect
A. To explain the working principle. B. To present a solution.
C. To introduce the challenge. D. To make a comparison.
5. What is the function of the soft patch
A. Predicting five different sentences.
B. Destroying the background magnetic field.
C. Slowing the movements of throat muscles.
D. Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
6. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research
C. Overcoming Voice Loss with an Innovative Patch
D. Finding the Principle of Communication Devices
C
If the benefits of physical activity were made into a pill, everyone would be on it. Studies show that moving improves nearly every aspect of health: boosting sleep, strength, and mental well-being. Still, most people don’t exercise nearly enough. According to data published in 2023, less than a third of U.S. adults get the government-recommended amount of physical activity in their free time: at least 20 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise per day, plus a couple of muscle-strengthening sessions each week.
Why is it so tough to get people to do something so good for them Physical limitations, health problems and modern life are certainly factors for many people. But research suggests there’s another factor: our brains don’t want us to exercise. For most of human existence, people had to be physically active to carry out the basic functions of life, such as finding food. Humans evolved (进化) to tolerate a high level of activity-but also to conserve energy for when movement was unnecessary, explains Daniel Lieberman, a human evolutionary biologist. As a society, we no longer move much in daily life, but the evolutionary instinct (本能) to conserve energy remains, Lieberman says. “That voice ‘I don’t want to exercise,’ is completely normal and natural,” he says.
Physical-activity researcher Matthieu Boisgontier demonstrated that phenomenon in a 2018 study. He gave people control of a digital avatar (化身) while they were connected to brain-activity monitors. They were instructed to move the avatar away from images of sedentary (久坐的) behavior that appeared on screen and toward images of physical activity. The study found that avoiding sedentary behavior took more brain power, suggesting that we have an “automatic tendency” to pick relaxing over moving.
That conclusion shows up repeatedly in research. Studies show, for example, that people consistently choose to take a lift instead of the stairs. “That natural instinct isn’t bad-it’s just that modern life gives us so many chances to give in to our preference for rest that we have reached an extreme that is no longer beneficial to our health,” Boisgontier says.
7. What do data published in 2023 suggest
A. U. S. adults have poor health awareness. B. The recommended activities are impractical.
C. Most Americans lack sufficient physical activity. D. Muscle-strengthening sessions deserve attention.
8. What makes people unwilling to exercise according to Lieberman
A. The physical limitations. B. The basic structure of the brain.
C. The convenient modern life. D. The natural energy-saving tendency.
9. What does the underlined part “that phenomenon” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. Sedentary behavior took much brain power. B. Most people tend to avoid physical activity.
C. Humans evolved for a high level of activity. D. Brain-related activities attract modern people.
10. What is Boisgontier’s attitude toward people’s physical inactivity
A. Doubtful B. Reserved. C. Approving. D. Opposed.

How long does it take to become an elite (精英) in your field ___11___ That’s what John Hayes, a cognitive psychology professor at Carnegie Mellon University, wanted to know.
For decades, Hayes has been investigating the role of effort, practice and knowledge in top performers. ___12___ The research focused on people like Mozart and Picasso-to determine how long it took them to become world-class at their craft.
Let’s talk about what Hayes has discovered about world-class-performers. And more importantly, let’s discuss how you can use these insights to achieve your goals and become your best.
___13___ He analyzed thousands of musical pieces produced from 1685 to 1900. The central question that drove his work was, “How long after one becomes interested in music is it that one becomes world-class ” Eventually, Hayes developed a list of 500 pieces of “masterworks” in the field, which were created by a total of 76 composers.
Hayes mapped out the timeline of each composers career. ___14___ What he discovered was that virtually every single “masterwork” was written after the tenth year of the composer’s career. Not a single person produced incredible work without putting in a decade of practice first. Even a genius like Mozart had to work for at least ten years before he produced something that became popular. ___15___
In follow-up studies, Hayes found similar patterns among famous painters and popular poets. These findings have been further confirmed by research from professors like K. Anders Ericsson, who produced research that revealed that you needed to put in “10, 000 hours” to become an elite or expert in your field.
A. It takes time to achieve your goals.
B. And what do people like doing in their spare time
C. He has studied the most talented creators in history.
D. Hayes started his research by examining successful composers
E. Professor Hayes began to refer to this period as the “ten years of silence”.
F. And what do the successful people do differently than the rest of us
G. And then he calculated how long they had been working before they created their popular works.

It was a cold, snowy evening. Tommy was running as fast as he could, focused on nothing but his destination----the shop on the street corner. Two weeks ago he saw figurines(小塑像) of Marvel superheroes on the shelves and felt he had to have one. He’s been walking the neighbor’s dog ever since then to earn money to fulfil his little dream. He was so excited and barely noticing the world around him. Maybe that’s why he tripped over the legs of a homeless woman, who was sitting on the pavement, her back against the wall. He murmured(低语) "sorry" and moved on to his destination.
Once he entered the shop, he went straight to the shelves with figurines. Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Iron Man, and many more----all of his admired heroes. With his heart pounding like crazy he reached for Spiderman.
“You like these, true believer ”
Tommy turned around. An old man was standing behind him with a wide smile on his face.
“Y-yes, …Yes, they’re awesome!” answered Tommy. “They’re strong and fast and help other people a lot ...”the boy looked at figurines in admiration. “I wish I could be a superhero too.”
“Then become one!” said the old man.
“How ” Tommy asked in surprise. “I don’t have any superpowers.”
“And why would you need them ” the old man smiled. Seeing the confusion on the boy's face, he squatted(蹲下) and put his hands on Tommy's arms. “Did you know that shopkeeper lady over there has a disabled husband She’s been working hard and taking care of him for years. I’ve never heard a word of complaint from her. And this person ---” he pointed at a redhead man, who just entered the shop. “He’s a firefighter; he’s saved countless lives. He never gives up, no matter how dangerous the situation seems to be.”
The old man looked Tommy in the eyes and smiled. “You don’t need a superpower to be a hero for someone else. The path of a superhero starts not in the mind not in the muscles, but in the heart.”

1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely.

D Helping turn muscle movements into electrical signals.
6. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. Predicting the Importance of Voice Restoration
B. Using Algorithms in Bioengineering Research
C. Overcoming Voice Loss with an Innovative Patch
D. Finding the Principle of Communication Devices
【答案】4. A 5. D 6.

A. Doubtful B. Reserved. C. Approving. D. Opposed.
【答案】7. C 8. D 9. B 10. D

第六部分:写作(满分25分)
61. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
The path of a superhero starts not in the mind, not in the muscles, but in the heart.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在相应位置作答。
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
Tommy lowered his head and looked at his shoes thinking intensely. Finally he raised his head. "So I am supposed to...” he stopped mid-sentence when he realized that he was alone. He turned his head left and right, but the old man was nowhere to be seen. His eyes lit up---- he already had an idea of what he should do. He looked at figurines for the last time and moved towards the counter. "Two sandwiches and a cup of tea please, "he said, and then returned, food in hand.
The homeless woman was right there, where he saw her last time. Tommy came closer and carefully gave the woman his buys. Her eyes opened wide in surprise, then filled with tears. “Thank you," she whispered. Tommy bowed his head, turned around and went back home. He was moving faster and faster and finally he started to run. Strange energy filling his body made him feel like he could fly. When he finally stopped, he was breathing heavily, but he didn’t feel tired. He smiled happily --- it was a wonderful feeling. And nothing could stop it.
