Innovation might sound like a technical and complicated process. However, some innovations have been born out of the most unbelievable and straightforward ways like nature. There have been many nature-inspired innovations, and below are several innovations that have shaped our world.
The “Velero (尼龙粘扣)” fastener
It was invented when a Swiss man named George de Mestral went for a walk with his dog in the woods and thought the burrs (芒刺) that clung to his trousers could be turned into something useful. He came up with the idea of making hook-and-loop fastener often called “Velcro” and patented his design in·1955. Hook-and-loop fastener is essential in medical equipment, shoes, and sports equipment. NASA’s astronauts used it in the 1960s to fasten their equipment.
Self-cleaning surfaces
In order to create surfaces that do not require human effort to keep clean, Wilhelm Barthlott drew inspiration from a lotus leaf to create self-cleaning surfaces. They discovered that the lotus leaf is considered hydrophobic (不易沾水的) because of its double-structured surface made of the cuticle and wax. The wax increases the leave’s contact angle which gives it its self-cleaning ability. This fantastic innovation has since been applied in the mirror industry and the making of tiles (瓷砖)and windows. New high-rise buildings also use self-cleaning windows.
Bullet train that produces less noise
A Japanese team was inspired by the kingfisher to design a bullet train that produces less noise. A group of .engineers realized that the kingfisher’s bill shape is like a wedge (三角木), an ideal shape to help the bird break up air and water out of its way, therefore, making no noise as it travels through the water. The team went back to work on the train’s shape to resemble that of the kingfisher’s bill, and it worked! This innovation not only reduced the amount of noise produced but also reduced the amount of energy used in the process by 15%, and also the speed increased by 10%.
1. The invention of hook-and-loop fastener was inspired by ________.
A. a kind of dog B. a kind of plant C. a trip of walk D. a kind of bird

C. Their shapes are similar to each other.
D. They hardly have any effect on people’s life.
B
Face masks and protective suits can save lives. But what happens after people are done using them Binish Desai, the founder of Eco-Eclectic Technologies from Western India, saw the impact brought by the rising use and demand for single-use masks and kits due to the coronations pandemic (冠状病毒流行病), so he created Brick 2. 0 to prevent tons of single-use Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) from being waste and ending up in landfills or water streams.
Although PPE is essential for medical use, it is extremely necessary to assess new alternatives and to raise awareness regarding its proper use and disposal (处理). A study published by the American Chemical Society suggests that 129 billion face masks are used monthly during the coronations pandemic, which causes great environmental pollution. In India alone, over 18, 000 British tons of coronations-related biomedical waste was generated in just four months between June and September. The waste would take hundreds of years break down, according to the magazine Waste Advantage.
Brick 2. 0 is a new version of the brick made from industrial waste, now also including used face masks and protective suits. The process starts with the collection of PPE waste through garbage cans placed in small shops and apartment buildings, with easy access for people to throw away their used items. Once in the factory, the collections are kept for 72 hours for safety reasons. Then they are cleaned and torn into pieces before being mixed with other waste. Finally, the material is shaped, and once dry, each brick is ready to use. It is three times stronger than conventional bricks at twice the size and half the price.
In a complex circumstance like the one we are living in these days, this solution is not only relatively easy to operate, but also very achievable in the short term, which can really help overcome today's global environmental challenges.
4. Why did Desai create Brick 2.0
A. To recycle the PPE waste.
B. To reduce production cost.
C. To protect water recourse.
D. To prevent serious disease.
5. What do the figures in Paragraph 2 indicate
A. The study lacks sufficient evidence.
B. The pandemic is difficult to control.
C. The demand for face masks is in decline.
D. The environment is facing severe challenges.
6. What is mainly discussed about Brick2.0in Paragraph3
A. Its function.
B. Its advantage.
C. Its main characteristic.
D. Its production process.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Innovation never ends
B. Environmental issues count
C. Transform waste into treasure
D. Defend your life with face masks

Tripadvisor, one of the world’s most popular travel sites, has recently announced that it will stop selling tickets to attractions that have captive(囚禁) whales and dolphins. The ban(禁令) is a continuation of the company’s 2016 policy that banned sales of tickets to attractions where tourists come into physical contact with animals, like elephant rides.
“Whales and dolphins do not grow well in limited captive environments,” Dermot Halpin, a Tripadvisor spokesperson, said. “We believe the current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity should be the last, and we look forward to seeing the whole travel industry follow this position.”
The ban applies to all attractions and aquariums(水族馆) that employ whales and dolphins for public displays
“Our aim is to stop future generations of whales and dolphins from being raised in captivity, and we hope to see them live freely in the wild,” Halpin said.
Not everyone liked the decision. Sea World, a top attraction in Florida, said the move ignored the needs and preferences of the general public. “I think Tripadvisor’s new decision was made in opinion rather than in science and research. It ignores the educational value of zoos and aquariums. Tripadvisor should trust its customers to make well-informed decisions,” said a Sea World spokesman. “Sea World always takes good care of all animals, including whales and dolphins. Sea World will continue to put more efforts in education and animal protection.”
Tripadvisor, which serves an average of about 490 million travelers a month, said the new policy will go into full effect by the end of the year.
8. What stopped dolphins and whales growing well according to Dermot Halpin
A. Too limited space. B. Unhealthy food.
C. Lots of public displays. D. Too much training.
9. What does the underlined part “this position” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A. Stopping employing captive dolphins and whales.
B Tourists coming into physical contact with animals.
C. Whales and dolphins living in captive environments.
D. The current generation of whales and dolphins in captivity.
10. Where did Tripadvisor hope dolphins and whales would live in the future
A. In aquariums. B. In protected areas.
C. In unpolluted oceans. D. In the natural environment.
11 How did Sea World feel about Tripadvisor’s decision
A. Puzzled. B. Proud.
C. Unconcerned. D. Disappointed.

In Whitney High School, Cerritos, California, which was known for its academic excellence and competitive atmosphere, there were two friends, Sam and Emily, who were preparing for their final exams. Sam and Emily were best friends and had always studied together. Sam was naturally gifted in mathematics, while Emily excelled in history. As their final exams approached, they promised to help each other with their weaker subjects.
They spent weeks preparing, exchanging notes, and quizzing each other. Sam helped Emily understand complex mathematics problems, and Emily helped Sam remember historical dates and events. Their friendship grew stronger as they worked towards their common goal.
However, as the exam day neared, Sam started to feel huge pressure. His parents had high expectations, and he was afraid of letting them down. He began to doubt his abilities, especially in history, which was his weakest subject. Emily noticed Sam’s anxiety and tried to reassure him, but Sam’s stress only seemed to increase. The night before the history exam, Sam admitted to Emily that he was considering cheating because he was so afraid of failing.
Emily was shocked and disappointed. She reminded Sam of all the hard work they had put in and the serious consequences cheating could have. She told him that it was better to try and fail honestly than to succeed through dishonesty.
On the day of the history exam, Sam was extremely nervous. He remembered Emily’s words and knew she was right. He decided to face the exam honestly, using what he had learned from their study sessions.
During the exam, Sam struggled with some of the questions, but he did his best to answer them without turning to cheating. When the exam ended, he felt a mix of relief and uncertainty. He had stuck to his values, but he wasn’t sure if he had done enough to pass the subject.

Not everyone liked the decision. Sea World a top attraction in Florida, said the move ignored the needs and preferences of the general public.

【答案】One possible version:
A few weeks later, the exam results were announced. Sam passed his history exam with an acceptable grade! He was overjoyed and relieved. He realized that he might have got a higher score if he had cheated, but the score was his honest effort, and that made it more valuable. Emily was proud of Sam for making the right choice. She told him that honesty was much more important than any grade.
The experience of preparing for and taking the exams strengthened the bond between Sam and Emily. They learned that facing challenges together, with honesty and support for each other, was more important than the outcome of any test. From then on, Sam approached challenges with more confidence and integrity, and Emily continued to be a supportive friend. Together, they realized that the true test was not in the exams they took but in the choices they made and the kind of people they chose to be.
