It is no mystery that learning a foreign language can be daunting. I especially felt this way when coming to China. To me, learning Chinese and becoming fluent in the language was nearly impossible by myself, so I decided to take a Chinese class in Suzhou.
Upon researching language schools in Suzhou, I first chose a school with affordable prices. However, after studying there for a few months, I still felt unable to communicate even though I could understand basic grammar and had memorized mountains of vocabulary. I also found that I was having much trouble with tones, so even when I spoke, I was hardly understood. So I decided to part ways with the school and turn to online Courses.
I love to learn at my own pace and it’s an effective way to learn a language. Basically, I learn Chinese by watching Chinese videos on many websites combined with reading a lot of Chinese books. Additionally, online conversations with native speakers are also helpful.
There is an interactive (互动的) process in the online course. I’m not doing a boring single learning. My course instructor is very professional and always provides feedback (反馈) regarding my performance in class and has helped me with pronunciation. She has also given me tips for daily life and cultural insights into life in China. Every class brings new insights into life in China and I always leave class feeling a bit more fluent than the last.
I now feel more confident in Chinese. After three months I am already able to order food, have basic conversations with locals and use the transportation tools to get around China. I’m looking forward to my future progress.
Learning Chinese is a necessary tool for any foreigner oriented (面向) towards China. Whether you are looking to live in China, do business in China or even learn more about Chinese culture, I recommend that you start your new journey by learning Chinese.

With Britain’s persistently wet weather, holding an umbrella over one’s head can often lead to a painful arm, but an inventor, who is also a netizen, may have a solution — a flying umbrella that follows the user around in the rain.
The homemade device includes an adapted yellow shop-bought umbrella and 3D printed components with propellers (螺旋桨) on the end. The new invention is the work of an engineer behind the “I Build Stuff” online channel. The young engineer points out that other attempts have been made to make a flying umbrella in the past. But they’ve gone wrong largely because the propellers have been in the wrong place — attached to the handle or above the canopy (遮篷), which leaves no space for the air to flow.
Therefore, for his flying umbrella, he attached the propellers so that they were sticking out from the sides of the canopy. It includes a central X-shaped frame of four arms made out of carbon fibre, which is both strong and light. Each of the arms has a propeller and motor at the end, making the device look like a cross between an umbrella and a drone.
Building the device took months and included a major setback due to badly soldered (焊接) wires, but eventually it was ready for a test run. “This thing actually shields me from the rain… it wasn’t raining that hard, but I think this thing can stand much harsher conditions, just probably not stronger winds,” he says.
Unfortunately, the user still has to control the umbrella with a two-handed remote to ensure it stays above the head — leaving little room to carry your shopping. However, the inventor now plans on making a better version. “In the future I could attach a camera to the underside and write a programme that tracks my position and moves my umbrella accordingly,” he adds.
8. Why did the inventor develop the flying umbrella
A. To show his engineering skills. B. To reduce arms’ pain on rainy days.
C. To attend the online channel. D. To facilitate people’s daily travel.
9. What made the invention of the flying umbrella possible
A. Investment in advanced equipment. B. Guidance from experienced engineers.
C. Lessons from the previous failures. D. Improvement of propellers’ quality.
10. What can we expect of the flying umbrellas in the future
A. It can help carry some goods. B. It can replace the traditional umbrella.
C. It can resist stronger winds. D. It can track people automatically.
11. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. An advertisement for an online program. B. A guidebook to an umbrella.
C. An introduction to a new invention. D. A research report on the weather.
D
Ask any parents of young children whether they’ve ever felt overwhelmed (不堪重负的), and the answer will probably be — yes. Even in the most relaxed households there can be days when things seem to be out of control, leaving parents exhausted and annoyed. Kids often don’t have an off button or a quiet voice.
Common as this feeling is, there’s a personality trait (特点) that can make everyday family life more overwhelming for some parents. Roughly 20%-30% of the population are classed as being a highly sensitive person, according to a 2018 research. People who have it may find it hard to cope with bright lights and loud noise, and feel very stressful. It can also involve a stronger understanding of other people’s feelings — empathy (同情).
According to the psychologists, being highly sensitive is not a disorder but a personality trait — a way of responding to one’s environment. “Generally, highly sensitive people tend to react particularly strongly to sensory stimulation. They have stronger consciousness. They come to realize more details,” says Michael Pluess, a psychologist specializing in the study. “They will pick up on the moods of other people, have higher empathy, process things more deeply and pick up more about the environment. Deeply affected by what they see and feel, highly sensitive people are also easily overstimulated.”
The challenges highly sensitive parents face — including stress and overstimulation in a messy environment — can affect “high quality parenting”. In the early stages of parenthood, such parents report greater stress and find parenting more difficult than other parents do.
Fortunately, though, the trait also comes with certain advantages. Recent evidence suggests that while highly sensitive parents initially experienced high levels of stress, they showed improved parenting styles by the time their babies were nine months old. In the short term, sensitive people are more easily overwhelmed with change, but when it comes to parenting, highly sensitive parents have the potential to be exceptional. They can understand their children and respond to their needs quickly and appropriately.
Since parental overwhelm can affect anyone, whether highly sensitive or not, some of the coping strategies for highly sensitive people could benefit all parents.
12. What does the author imply in the first paragraph
A. The life of young parents is colorful.
B. The kids are unhappy for lack of love.
C. Young kids are often tough to deal with.
D. It is easy to get everything under control.
13. What does Michael Pluess say about highly sensitive people
A. They possess no good insight.
B. It is hard to overstimulate them.
C. They better understand the environment.
D. It is common for them to overlook details.
14. How does the author consider the high sensitivity among young parents
A. Deeply rooted. B. Extremely harmful.
C. Greatly unstable. D. Potentially beneficial.
15. What might the author continue talking about
A. Outcomes of coping strategies.
B. Tips for highly sensitive parents.
C. Responses to the concern about parenting.
D. Evaluation of overwhelmed parents’ impact.

We had moved to a new town for my husband’s work. After living here for just a couple of weeks, I was more than ready to pick up my luggage and move back home. I was lonely for a friend. My boy Samuel was lonely. My husband, Lonny, adapted just fine, but he was occupied with work most of the time.
I missed our old neighborhood. It had been like a closely knitted community where neighbors chatted over fences. Newcomers were welcomed with chocolate brownies (巧克力蛋糕) and carrot bread. It had been easy to find friends there.
Our new community was different. It seemed that family roots grew deep. Deep as the Mississippi River that flowed past this tiny river town. Breaking in was tough.
“I’m so alone here,” I said to Lonny one evening. Lonny is a good listener, and a problem solver. “What have you done to meet people ” he asked. “I go to the park every day. I even dropped by a book salon (读书沙龙) at the library the other day and came across a nice lady with a boy.”
“Sounds not bad,” he said. “Did you talk to her ” The answer was no. It wasn’t that people here were unkind. I just didn’t feel like initiating conversations, and I preferred minding my own business in a new environment.
A few more months passed and winter settled in. It was harder than ever to meet people. I began to feel bitter. I was tired of trying to fit in a place where we didn’t belong.
Lonny noticed my low spirits. “Amy, you look unapproachable, with your arms crossed and everything,” he whispered in my ear one afternoon. He and I were sitting in the yard. Samuel, our five-year-old was playing baseball next to us.
“It doesn’t matter. I’m not going to have friends here.” Just then Samuel looked up. He must’ve heard our whispers. “Mom’s right, Dad. We’ll never ever have friends here. And we just want to go back to our old home.” I sat there and looked at my tiny innocent son. His words mirrored my attitude. And I didn’t like the disturbing reflection.

A Investment in advanced equipment.

15 What might the author continue talking about

【答案】参考范文:
That’s when I knew that I needed an adjustment. I didn’t want my boy to grow into a bitter kid. Over the next few weeks, I worked very hard to fit in. I greeted everyone with a friendly nod, arms uncrossed with a genuine smile. I struck up conversations with acquaintances at the park. I even baked chocolate brownies and offered them as a nice gesture to our neighbors. Most importantly, I stopped talking about moving back home and drew my son’s attention to the upsides of our new community. To my delight, Samuel also started to feel a bit more at home and included.
One afternoon, Samuel and I ran into the lady with her boy again at the library. I gathered my courage and walked closer. “Hi, I’m Amy. This is Samuel. Can we join you guys ” I made sure that I looked approachable. The woman readily pulled up two chairs for us. It turned out we had a whole lot in common. Following that encounter, we visited each other’s home a million times. Before long, my family gradually found our way to be part of this river town. One day Lonny and I were sitting in our yard again, preparing for a barbecue party. “Darling, you still wanna go back home ” Before I uttered a single word, Samuel cut in, “No, Dad. This is our home now.”
