On a diving holiday in the Philippines last October, with seven other advanced divers, I dived off the boat, slowly sinking to about 20m.
45 minutes later, a low rumble like an engine drowned out the sound of my breathing and I felt deep powerful vibrations(震动) as if a big boat was passing overhead. The dive instructor's eyes were wide with confusion too. We both swam next to each other staying close to the side of the reef. The situation felt sinister.
Then we were enveloped by clouds of white sand that mushmoomed up around us. Could it be a giant turtle racing past us They are normally slow mover s so this was very weird behavior. The vibration became so intense that I could feel it in my bones and then the sound turned into a deafening roar. Suddenly, a few meters below us, breaks began forming and the sand was sucked down. That was when I got what it was. The noise was the sound of the earth splitting open and grinding(碾压) against itself.
We held hands and looked into each other's eyes, comforted by each other's presence. My body went on high alert and it took enormous willpower to resist the urge to swim to the surface, which was not sensible as situation on the surface at that time was unclear with potential threats.
The sound and vibration lasted only two or three minutes and when swimming back, we all held hands before resurfacing to avoid decompression sickness, which can be deadly.
Back on the boat, we checked the news and discovered we had witnessed a huge earthquake, measuring 7.2 on the Richter scale. It released more energy than 30 Hiroshima bombs, though it seemed that we were not at the epicenter(震中). I was high and felt lucky surprisingly not because of my recent survival miracle, but to have experienced nature at its most stunning and its most frightening.
4. What does the underlined word “sinister” probably mean
A. Amazing B. Amusing C. Promising D. Threatening
5. What made the author aware of what was happening
A. Observing the seabed cracking. B. Being informed of the event.
C. Feeling the violent undersea shake. D. Witnessing a turtle's abnormal behavior.
6. What stopped the divers to rise to the surface instantly
A. The potential deadly disease. B. The unclear situation in the water.
C. The possible unexpected danger above. D. The instructor's gesturing them not to rise.
7. Which could be the best title of the passage
A. The Charm of Exploration. B. A Frightening Earthquake.
C. A Close Encounter with Nature. D. A Caution from Underwater World.

When climate activists gathered in front of a copy of The Last Supper at London’s Royal Academy of Arts, criticizing the British government’s support of the fossil fuel industry, people reflected deeply on their argument. But when protesters threw tomato soup at Van Gogh’s Sunflowers, and mashed potatoes at Haystacks by Monet, criticism rose.
“We have been deeply shaken by their absurd and risky endangerment,” read a statement from the International Council of Museums. Luckily the targeted works are protected behind glass, so actual damage has been minimal. And perhaps the anger greeting their acts proves their point: that people care more about the possible destruction of a painting than the actual destruction of the planet. But as the attacks wear down, and their impact decreases, they risk changing into a joke.
What’s especially misguided about the protests is that they ask people to make a choice — “What is worth more, art or life ” But why choose “It’s possible to blame both environmental vandalism (蓄意破坏) and cultural vandalism at the same time,” Mark Pasnik, chair of the Boston Art Commission, said. Art is not the problem here. In fact, some artists are making quite effective works about the climate crisis, precisely using art as activism. One such example is Maya Lin’s Ghost Forest, a climate change memorial she created in a New York City park.
The climate activists are surely correct that the pace of reform is far too slow, as the planet burns and deadly storms intensify. But they casually dismiss the sincere efforts of millions of people working on the issue. It would be easier to gain people’s support and respect if they were to spend their time and energy on the unexciting but essential political work around climate change: legislation (法律), regulation, and winning hearts and minds.
Predictably, the debates caused by the protests have not been about climate change, but about the protests themselves. Given how little they’ve done to generate serious discussion among people, the art attacks seem less like vital acts of lawbreaking than mere drama.
8. What is the first paragraph mainly about
A. Presenting protesters’ attitude to art works. B. Blaming the British Government’s decision.
C. Stressing the seriousness of environment crises. D. Contrasting public attitudes to activists’ protests.
9. Which expression best describes climate activists’ vandalizing action
A. The end justifies the means. B. Art speaks where words fail.
C. The freedom of protest should be protected. D. Art matters in the fight against climate crisis.
10. Why does the author mention Maya Lin’s Ghost Forest in paragraph 3
A. To blame the two kinds of vandalism. B. To prove art is more important than life.
C. To advocate people making right choices. D. To show some artists are pulling their weight.
11. What is the author’s attitude to the protesters’ attacks to art
A. Supportive. B. Objective. C. Unfavorable. D. Tolerant.
D
A French study published last month in the Journal Animal Cognition found that not only do cats react to what scientists call cat-directed speech — a high-pitched voice similar to how we talk to babies — but they react to who is doing the talking.
“We found that when hearing their owners using a high-pitched voice, the cats reacted more than when they heard their owner speaking normally to another human adult,” said Charlotte de Mouzon, an author of the study and cat behavior expert at the Université Paris Nanterre. “But surprisingly, it didn’t work when it came from a stranger’s voice.”
Unlike with dogs, cat behavior is difficult to study, which is part of why humans understand them less. Cats are often so stressed when studied in a lab that meaningful behavioral observations become less likely. And forget about getting a cat’s M. R. I. scan for its brain function study.
So the researchers for the latest study went to the cats’ homes and played recordings of different types of speech and different speakers. “Their reactions were very subtle(微妙的),” Dr. de Mouzon said. “It could be just moving an ear or turning the head towards the speaker or even freezing what they were doing.” In a few cases, the cats would approach the speaker playing a voice and meow.
The findings showed that “cats are paying close attention to their caretakers, down to not only what they are saying, but how they are saying it,” said Dr. de Mouzon. The relationships between a cat and its owner replicate(复制)the connection between a kitten and its mother. “It is possible that attachment behaviors originally intended for interactions with their mother have now been modified for interactions with their new caretakers, humans.”
“For years, scientists didn’t ask the right questions about cats,” Dr. de Mouzon said. Now those who are convinced of the disloyalty of cats won’t like the answers. Cats don’t hate us after all, Dr. de Mouzon said, adding that “a growing body of work supports the idea that social interaction with humans is key in the life of a cat.”
12. Which section can you expect to find this passage in a magazine
A. Our Furry Friends. B. Flora and Gardens.
C. Crafts and Furnishing. D. Health and Well-being.
13. According to the study, which of the following may capture a cat’s attention
A. An adult’s ordinary voice. B. A baby’s high-pitched voice.
C. A stranger’s high-pitched speech. D. An owner’s cat-directed speech.
14. How did the researchers conduct the research
A. By giving the cats an M. R. I. scan. B. By comparing cats and dogs behaviors.
C. By replicating a kitten-mother relationship. D. By observing cat’s reaction to some recordings.
15. What is the passage mainly about
A. New evidence disapproves that cat are cold.
B. Cats treat their owners the way they treat their mothers.
C. Cats respond to their owners well when communicated properly.
D. The social interaction between cats and humans is important to cats.

Our Unwelcome Guests
If you picnic in a Texas park, chances are that you'll encounter fire ants--a troublesome pest renowned for their painful and irritating stings. ___16___ Across the world, from the vast landscapes of Texas to the exotic shores in China, non-native animals, plants, bacteria and viruses are damaging economies and ecosystems.
An invasive species is any kind of living thing that is foreign to a particular ecosystem and causes harm. Sometimes non- native species are imported unintentionally like in the 1930s when cargo ships from South America accidentally took fire ants to North America. ___17___ For instance, certain Asian fish species, originally imported from China to clean fish farms in the U.S., escaped and entered local rivers. Similarly, green iguanas were brought to China as pets, but some irresponsible owners released them into the wild. ___18___
The worldwide economic impact of introduced species is enormous. According to U.S. government estimates, invasive species cost the American economy over $120 billion annually. ___19___ Besides, invasive species have the potential to destroy their new habitats by upsetting the local ecosystems. They often lack natural predators (掠食者) in their new environment and out-compete native species for food and other resources. ___20___ In Florida, for instance, pythons have reduced some regional mammal populations by 90 percent. Additionally, Invasive species can also carry diseases against which local species have no natural defense, resulting in the extinction of an entire native species.
Alarmingly, the National Wildlife Federation in the U. S. warns that, “Unless people take serious action, the economic and environmental costs connected to invasive species will become astronomical.”
A. They may even prey on local species.
B. The same went with Burmese pythons (蟒) in Florida.
C. Other times non- native species are purposely brought in.
D The economic impact of fire ants alone totals in the billions.
E. Millions of dollars were spent fighting introduced species in US.
F. In some way, the introduced species can be a double blade sword.
G. Like many others, this invasive species is also quite expensive and destructive.

When I was a kid, my parents and I lived near the forest. They often told me that our family was a team that needed to work together for the household to function smoothly. There was always an abundance of work to do — cooking, cleaning, and walking dogs. I volunteered to walk our dog, Max, who had been adopted one month before. I never dared let this giant dog off the lead (牵狗绳), just in case he took off.
One morning, we were walking along in the forest when Max started pulling on the lead. At first, I was able to hold on despite the wet ground from a recent shower. But the more I tried to stop him pulling, the more it turned into a tug of war. And thanks to the slippery ground, I lost.
Pulling his lead, Max shot off like a bullet, leaving me screaming behind. I chased him but lost my footing and fell face-first into some mud. I stumbled (踉跄) to my feet, but looking ahead, I found him running back towards me. I thought he was going to stop and give me his “Sorry” look. But instead, the dog shot past me and returned after a while.
As soon as we got home, my mother immediately attended to Max with a warm towel and a doggy treat. I thought seeing me stumbling and covered in mud, I would also get a warm cup of tea and a motherly kiss. Instead, I got a very loud lecture about letting the dog loose in the forest.
I felt frustrated. It wasn’t fair that she didn’t understand how difficult it was to control Max. I fought back, “Stop lecturing me! Why is everything my fault ” With these words, I stormed into my bedroom and slammed the door shut.
In the evening, I heard my mother call Max and take him out. It wasn’t long before I heard my mother screaming and the door opening again.

8 What is the first paragraph mainly about
D. Tolerant.

Sometimes non- native species are imported unintentionally, like in the 1930s when cargo ships from South America accidentally took fire ants to North America.
D. The economic impact of fire ants alone totals in the billions.

【答案】范文
I walked out of my room. Not surprisingly, they were both covered in mud. It was evident that Max had led my mother on another wild chase through the forest. My frustration melted away as I saw my mother’s apologetic expression. “Sweetheart,” my mom said softly, “I’m sorry for scolding you earlier.” After a quick shower, she then shared her own adventure with Max and how he also managed to escape from her grasp, when I served her a warm cup of tea. It seemed we were both at our wits’ end with this dog. (89 words)
Dad stepped in, suggesting that we work together to train Max. We spent the next few days teaching Max basic commands like “sit”, “stay”, and “come back”. It wasn’t easy, but gradually, Max started responding better to us. The instant we tried to stop him pulling, he sat down with eyes looking intently at us. In the process, not only did Max become more obedient, but our family also grew closer. We realized that every member of our team played an important role, and we needed to support each other to ensure everything ran smoothly. (84 words)
