As a child, I was proud of my southern origin. My own voice reflected my family’s past and present-part northern Mississippi, part Tennessee, all southern. There was no sound I loved more than my grandmother’s accent: thick, sweet, warm.
While growing up, I began to realize outside of our region, southerners were often dismissed as uncultured and ignorant. I was ready to leave behind my tiny town in West Tennessee, starting a new life and jumping at big chances in some far-off cities. In that embarrassing space between “teen” and “adult”, my accent was a symbol of everything I thought I hated about my life in the rural South. I feared it would disqualify me from being a noted magazine writer. I would have to talk less “country”. So I killed a piece of myself. I’m ashamed of it, but I’m more ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else-change Emily’s accent.
I met Emily in college. She was determined to work for the student newspaper, which was where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends. She, unlike me, accepted her roots. Early in our friendship, her mother asked where I was from, assuming it was somewhere up north. Then I felt my efforts paid off and even wanted to ignore the mistake.
Emily is two years younger and she cared about my opinion. I advised her to be more like me and hide her signature Manchester accent. I stressed that throughout our college years, often by making fun of her vowel (元音) sounds. I told myself I was helping her achieve her dream of working as a reporter. Now, I see that it was actually about justifying my hiding part of myself.
Grandma Carolyn used to tell me, “Girl, don’t forget where you come from.” Now I truly understand that. Many things have faded from memory, but this sticks in my mind with uncomfortable clarity. Now that I am grown and have left the South, it’s important to me.
4. What made the author want to leave her hometown
A. Appeal of convenience in cities.
B. Her dream of becoming a writer.
C. Outside prejudice against southerners.
D. Her desire for the northern accent.
5. How did the author feel about the mistake of Emily’s mother
A. Upset. B. Pleased. C. Ashamed. D. Surprised.
6. Why on earth did the author try to change Emily’s accent
A. To prove herself right. B. To help Emily be a reporter.
C. To make herself influential. D. To protect Emily’s self-dignity.
7. What message does the text want to convey
A. Stay true to your roots. B. Never do things by halves.
C. Hold on to your dreams. D. Never judge a person by his accent.
C
Ancient builders across the world created structures (建筑物) that are still standing today, thousands of years later. Roman engineers built thick concrete barriers (混凝土屏障), for example. Mayan builders created structures to their gods, and Chinese builders raised walls against enemies.
But there are many recent structures that are already starting to fail. The concrete that makes up much of our modern world lasts around 50 to 100 years.
A growing number of scientists are breaking apart pieces of buildings and reading historical texts, hoping to learn how they have stood for thousands of years. The research has turned up a surprising list of materials that were mixed into old buildings. They include tree skins, volcanic ash, rice and even beer. These unexpected materials could have the ability to get stronger over time and “repair” cracks when they form.
Is ancient Roman concrete better Many researchers have turned to the Romans. Starting around 200 BC, the Roman Empire was building concrete structures that have stood the test of time. Now, scientists think they have found an important reason why some Roman concrete has held up structures for thousands of years.
Admir Masic, an environmental engineer said this power comes from thick pieces of limestone (石灰石) throughout the Roman material that is not mixed in well. Researchers used to think these thick pieces were a sign that the Romans were not mixing up their materials well enough. Instead, the scientists found when cracks form, water enters the concrete. That water causes the leftover lime to create new chemical changes that can fill in the broken sections.
Finding out how to copy these features (特征) could have real influences today. Today’s builders cannot just copy the ancient processes. Even though Roman concrete lasted a long time, it could not hold up heavy buildings. “If we add 50 or 100 years to concrete’s lifetime,” Admir Masic said, “we will pull down less and require less material in the long run.”
8. Why are Mayan and Chinese builders mentioned in the first paragraph
A. To present some facts. B. To explain a rule.
C. To introduce places. D. To make a comparison.
9. What do scientists want to do by breaking apart pieces of buildings
A. Replace broken parts. B. Improve their style.
C Learn about their history. D. Study their materials.
10. What is special about the ancient materials
A. They couldn’t mix up easily. B. They created new chemicals in time.
C. They had an ability to repair themselves. D. They would take in the nearby water.
11. How can modern builders learn from the features of ancient materials
A. By making the past serve the present. B. By trying to find the ideas behind them.
C. By making use of them without any change. D. By accepting the good and throwing the bad.
D
Playing tennis might add years to your life, according to a new study of Danish men and women. The study found that adults who frequently participate in tennis or other racket (球拍) and team sports lived longer than people who were spending a lot of time sitting down. They also lived longer than people who took part in activities such as jogging, swimming and cycling. The results raise interesting questions about the role that social interactions might play in enlarging the benefits of exercise.
No one doubts that being physically active improves our health and can extend our longevity (寿命). But whether some activities might be better than others remains in argument. One widely publicized 2017 study of more than 80,000 British men and women found that those who played racket sports like tennis tended to outlive those who jogged.
The researchers widened their inquiry and looked at a variety of sports and their associations with life. To start, they turned to the same data resource they had used for the jogging study, the Copenhagen City Heart Study. The study’s participants had all completed health exams and lengthy questionnaires about their lifestyles and whether and how often they took part in some sports common in Denmark, including cycling, swimming, running, tennis, soccer and, perhaps unexpectedly, badminton.
According to the data, cycling added an average of 3.7 years to riders’ lives, compared to sedentary Danes. Running added 3.2 years while tennis 9.7 years. These associations remained unchanged even when the researchers controlled for people’s education, socioeconomic status and age.
“Why and how some sports might add more years to people’s lives than others is impossible to know from this kind of observational study,” says Dr. James O’Keefe, a study co-author. “But we know that social support probably has unique effects on helping people get more benefits from the exercise.”
For now, people who run or ride alone might consider finding a group or partner to work out together. “Raising your heart rate is important for health,” he says. “But it looks like connecting with other people is, too.”
12. According to the passage, which activity may help people live longer
A. Cycling. B. Running marathon.
C. Swimming. D. Playing badminton.
13. What does the underlined word “sedentary” in the fourth paragraph mean
A. Inactive. B. Outgoing. C. Depressed. D. Easygoing.
14. Which may Dr. James O’Keefe recommend according to the last paragraph
A. Exercising alone. B. Working out together.
C. Working out regularly. D. Raising one’s heart rate.
15. It is suggested in the passage that ________.
A. women who prefer team sports live longer than men
B people’s education and socioeconomic status affect their longevity
C. the reason why some sports might add more years to people’s lives is still unknown
D. 80,000 Danish men and women participated in the survey

It was late December. It was the great Christmas shopping time. I asked my son and daughter to go together, but they preferred to play at home.
People were busy buying gifts for their beloved ones. It seemed that the bigger the gifts were the better they would be. I shook my head sadly and walked on. I was shopping alone trying to pick up some thick winter socks to warm my frozen feet.
As I rounded the corner in the store I saw a Christmas tree full of paper angels (天使). On each angel was the name of a needy child whose family couldn’t afford to buy them a gift that year. Shoppers who picked an angel could buy a simple toy or gift. The store would wrap it and send it to the child that Christmas.
Around the tree I saw a teenage boy and girl picking out several angels. Their mother was smiling while she watched them. I walked up next to her and started talking with her. She told me that her children started this several years ago when she first explained to them what the Charity Angel tree was for. Each offered to give up one of their toys that year so that a needy child could have one. It didn’t stop then, though. Each year since the kids had saved money they earned throughout the year and bought more and more children the gifts they wouldn’t have otherwise. It had become a family tradition.

Dear John,
Learning that you are appointed the task to organize the Chinese Culture Festival, I am more than delighted to offer some suggestions.
Art is an inseparable part of Chinese culture, which includes paintings, dramas, handcrafts and so on. Therefore, it makes sense to arrange for a gallery exhibiting various traditional Chinese art forms. Additionally, the Chinese lay great significance and proud themselves on their traditional festivals. To get everyone involved, you can hold a couple of DIYs, such as making dumplings and zongzi to create a festival atmosphere.
The exchange between different cultures promotes communication and understanding between different nations. I’m confident that you are able to make the event a success with ample preparations.
Yours,
Li Hua
47. I smiled when she finished, and walked over to the tree. Feeling eager and excited, I reached for the paper angels. “Who will be the child ” I whispered. “In spite of my struggle, I would like to offer her a simple Christmas gift.” At this time, the teenage boy and girl whose mother I talked with just now approached me, showing me their gifts which were wrapped by the store, broad smiles on their faces. Definitely, their virtue really made a big difference to me. I really admired them for their being so caring and kind to help needy children. After a while, we said goodbye with a hug.
Waving to the two happy children, I left the store, planning what to do next Christmas. On my arrival at my home, I was greeted by my son and daughter. As soon as I sat down, I poured out the Charity Angle tree to them in detail. What’s more, I explained to them the gift that I chose. After listening with great interest, they shouted, “From now on, we will save money and buy gifts for more children”. We agreed to make it a family tradition at the Christmas shopping time every year. Obviously, it was small acts of kindness that add up, which is significant to our society.
