Unit 3 The Internet Reading and Thinking—高一英语人教版(2019)必修第二册课时优化训练
一、阅读理解
1. As for old people, some of the applications are hard to use because they didn't grow up with them. They don't have simple models of how they should work, what to do when something doesn't work or where to go for help. We make it as easy as possible to be used for people who are not familiar with the technology.
I think there is huge potential and we are designing it. The ability to connect to friends, who remember the same movies, news and music, is really important, especially as people get old. They end up in retirement at home and they aren't always close to their friends. Allowing the network to help them connect with friends and family is a really powerful thing.
My mother is an enthusiastic user of the Internet, although it took me years to get her to use e-mail. She was born with normal hearing, but lost it when she was 3. She was totally deaf for many years, until age 53, when she got ear aids. They work really well. That is a big change for her. But before then, her friends couldn't call her on the phone, so they suggested she use e-mail to communicate with them.
Young people don't even think of the Internet as technology. It's just there, and they use it. There's been a very interesting change in communication styles between old people and young people. There are some kids who are now in their teens and aren't willing to make phone calls. And they think e-mail is old-fashioned and slow.
The reason why teens don't make phone calls seems to be that they don't know what to say. When they call, they often stop for a while and there's a silence. On the other hand, texting is considered proper, and it's okay if you don't answer. You might have been distracted. It's not rude. But it is strange if you're in this kind of conversation and simply stop talking.
1.What is the trouble that old people meet when surfing the Internet

2.A new library in Tianjin—Tianjin Binhai Public Library—recently became an online hit. The Daily Mail described it as the “world’s ultimate (终极的) library”, while the word “breathtaking” was the choice of Newsweek magazine. One look at the library and you’ll see why. With its futuristic (未来主义) design and walls loaded with books, it’s the dream library of every book lover.
But as the surprise continues, there’s a burning question lying in the back of our minds: When physical bookstores are closing down one by one, what makes libraries safe from the wave of digitalization (数码化) And do we really still need libraries now that we’ve got the Internet in our hands
Reporter Ian Clark has the answer. “Libraries are not declining in importance—people are simply changing the way they use them,” he wrote on the Guardian website.
What Clark means is that libraries have shifted from simply being storehouses of books to a medium to help “bridge the gap between the haves and the have-nots” according to website Libraries Are Essential. Since not everyone can afford a smartphone, a tablet or an Internet connection, and not everyone has the know-how to search the Internet correctly and efficiently, it’s public libraries that make sure that these resources and technologies are available to a larger group of people.
“Nobody is trying to sell you anything in the library. There is no pressure to buy and there is no judgment of your choices/’ Anne Goulding, a professor at Victoria University in New Zealand, wrote on the Newsroom website. “There are few other spaces that you can just ‘be’ without somebody questioning your presence or your motivation.”

一、阅读理解
1. On March 28th, the New York Times will begin charging all but the most infrequent users to read articles online.
In a letter to readers, Arthur Sulzberger, Jr., the publisher of the paper, laid out the details of the paywall, which he said will go into effect immediately in Canada and on March 28th for the rest of the world. He called the move "an important step that we hope you will see as an investment in the Times, one that will strengthen our ability to provide high quality journalism to readers around the world and on any platform."
Sulzberger said that readers will be able to read 20 articles per month at no charge. Once they click on the 21st piece, however, they'll be presented with three payment options: $ 15 for four weeks of online and mobile application access, $ 20 for access to the site and the iPad application, or $ 35 for access to everything. People who already receive the printed paper through home delivery will enjoy free and unlimited access to the Times on all platforms.
These details largely agree with earlier reports on how the paywall would work. The Times had made it clear that it did not want to imitate the total paywalls put into effect by papers such as The Times of London and Newsday, which block access to all contents unless the reader pays.
The paper also signaled that it wants to stay relevant in the social media world. According to Sulzberger's announcement, people who come to the Times site from Facebook, Twitter or from blogs will be able to read those articles even if they have gone over their monthly limit.
However, Sulzberger said that a limit will be placed on "some search engines", meaning that after readers have accessed a certain number of articles from search engines, any further articles they access from there will be added to their monthly count. It was reported that the only search engine that will be affected this way is Google, where there will be a five-article limit. This marks a clear attempt by the Times to close what could be a giant loophole(漏洞), since so much online traffic is directed through Google. But it also presents a risk for the Times for the same reason.
Sulzberger seems well aware of the risk. "The challenge now is to put a price on our work without walling ourselves off from the global network." he said, adding that the Times must "continue to engage with the widest possible audience".

2. Big data of the human face can make a difference. Technology is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. Apple's iPhone X has already used face recognition to unlock the home screen. Face recognition is becoming increasingly common in China, where it has been equipped at ATM and KFC restaurants. It is also used by shop owners to catch shoplifters.
Some universities are using face recognition technology as a means to keep track of the students' attendance in the classrooms. Students stand in front of a screen when they walk into lecture halls. Photos taken at the screen are matched with those logged in the university's database. It's believed that the system is highly accurate(精确的) because it can identify students even if they change their hair or wear makeup. Students have joked that face recognition is so strict that they don't dare to skip classes anymore. The traditional way of taking attendance is through a roll call. The new system helps to improve efficiency
(效率).
Face recognition technology has already been used in different fields in China. Police have set up face recognition scanners at busy crossroads to catch jaywalkers, whose photos will be shown on the digital screen as a warning. In the hotels of Wuzhen attractions, face scanner-equipped gates identify tourists staying in its hotels. The data collected will then serve as Entry Pass through the town's various attractions. Tourists do not have to pay extra entrance fee. Face recognition has also been in business use in China Alipay, for example, is using its face recognition technology to help customers at a Hangzhou KFC branch order food: The camera in the KFC will check customers' face against the ID card photos linked to their Alipay accounts.

3.Oliver Twist (excerpt)
Although I am not disposed to maintain that the being born in a workhouse, is in itself the most fortunate and enviable circumstance that can possibly befall a human being, I do mean to say that in this particular instance, it was the best thing for Oliver Twist that could by possibility have occurred. The fact is, that there was considerable difficulty in inducing Oliver to take upon himself the office of respiration—a troublesome practice, but one which custom has rendered necessary to our easy existence; and for some time he lay gasping on a little flock mattress, rather unequally poised between this world and the next: the balance being decidedly in favour of the latter. Now, if, during this brief period, Oliver had been surrounded by careful grandmothers, anxious aunts, experienced nurses, and doctors of profound wisdom, he would most inevitably and indubitably have been killed in no time. There being nobody by, however, but a pauper old woman, who was rendered rather misty by an unwonted allowance of beer; and a parish surgeon who did such matters by contract; Oliver and Nature fought out the point between them. The result was, that, after a few struggles, Oliver breathed, sneezed, and proceeded to advertise to the inmates of the workhouse the fact of a new burden having been imposed upon the parish, by setting up as loud a cry as could reasonably have been expected from a male infant who had not been possessed of that very useful appendage, a voice, for a much longer space of time than three minutes and a quarter.
As Oliver gave this first proof of the free and proper action of his lungs, the patchwork coverlet which was carelessly flung over the iron bedstead, rustled; the pale face of a young woman was raised feebly from the pillow; and a faint voice imperfectly articulated the words, 'Let me see the child, and die.'
The surgeon deposited it in her arms. She imprinted her cold white lips passionately on its forehead; passed her hands over her face; gazed wildly round; shuddered; fell back—and died. They chafed her breast-hands, and temples; but the blood had stopped forever. They talked of hope and comfort. They had been strangers too long.
'It's all over, Mrs Thingummy!' said the surgeon at last.
'Ah, poor dear, so it is!' said the nurse, picking up the cork of the green bottle, which had fallen out on the pillow, as she stooped to take up the child. 'Poor dear!'
'You needn't mind sending up tome, if the child cries, nurse,' said the surgeon, putting on his gloves with great deliberation. 'It's very likely it will be troublesome. Give it a little gruel if it is.' He put on his hat, and, pausing by the bedside on his way to the door, added, 'She was a good-looking girl, too; where did she come from '
'She was brought here last night,' replied the old woman, 'by the overseer's order. She was found lying in the street. She had walked some distance, for her shoes were worn to pieces; but where she came from, or where she was going to, nobody knows.'
The surgeon leaned over the body, and raised the left hand. 'The old story,' he said, shaking his head: 'no wedding-ring, I see. Ah! Good-night!'
The medical gentleman walked away to dinner; and the nurse, having once more applied herself to the green bottle, sat down on a low chair before the fire, and proceeded to dress the infant.
What an excellent example of the power of dress, young Oliver Twist was! Wrapped in the blanket which had hitherto formed his only covering, he might have been the child of a nobleman or a beggar; it would have been hard for the haughtiest stranger to have assigned him his proper station in society. But now that he was enveloped in the old calico robes which had grown yellow in the same service, he was badged and ticketed, and fell into his place at once—a parish child—the orphan of a workhouse—the humble, half-starved drudge—to be cuffed and buffeted through the world—despised by all, and pitied by none.
Oliver cried lustily. If he could have known that he was an orphan, left to the tender mercies of church-wardens and overseers, perhaps he would have cried louder.
1.Why did the author said that Oliver Twist's being born in a workhouse was fortunate
2. What did the author mean by saying "The old story"?
3. Why would Oliver perhaps have cried louder

基础篇
Today I want to blog about a question that has been discussed many times—whether students can surf the Internet in the classroom. We know our principal and teachers are afraid that we may visit unhealthy websites.
Actually, every coin has two sides. We still think that surfing the Internet can bring us much more benefits and it is more convenient for our study. Firstly, I think it would be better if we can surf the Internet, because there are a wide range of learning resources on the Internet. Secondly, we can keep track of various news online. Finally, as high school students, we are forming our judgment and we will keep what our principal and teachers say in mind. Given chances, we are sure that we will learn how to stay away from unhealthy websites.
I really hope we can have a chance to surf the Internet and our principal and teachers can take my suggestion into consideration and make a final decision.

Social networking isn't only for the under-40s. More than 25percent of Americans 50 years of age and older stay connected using sites such as Facebook, MySpace and Twitter, according to new research.
"The latest data tells us that more and more social networking is becoming a part of everyday life for Americans 50 plus years of age," said Kevin Donnellan, chief communications officer at AARP, which released the report.
Nearly a quarter of older Americans are on Facebook and 73 percent say they use it to stay in touch with relatives, but not just their children and grandchildren. "They are using the Internet to keep up with the world and the people who are important to them," said Jean Koppen, the author of the report. She added that older adults were also on Facebook to stay connected not only with their family, but with their friends and those in the same age group. Almost 50 percent of older adults were introduced to the social networking sites by a family member, mainly a child or grandchild. Just under one-fifth of adults aged 50 and above say they do not use the Internet, according to the report.
The findings are based on a telephone survey of 1,863 adults. In addition to keeping up on Facebook and Twitter, older adults are aware of the latest technology. Eighty-three percent had heard about the Apple iPad and 11percent intended to buy one. Despite the popularity of the Internet among the over-50s, they still mostly go to print newspapers and magazines for news. Only one percent said they followed blogs.

Well, that train has left the station. But can using the Internet too much be bad for our health It might be, researchers say. A new study finds that heavy Internet use may be connected to high blood pressure(血压) in an unlikely group: teenagers.
High blood pressure makes your heart and blood vessels(血管) work too hard. Over time, this extra pressure increases your risk of a heart attack. High blood pressure can also cause heart and kidney(肾脏) disease. It is also closely linked to a brain disease.
The Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, Michigan did the study. 335 young people, from 14 to 17 years old, took part in it. 134 of the teens were described as "heavy Internet users". And researchers found that out of these 134 teens, 26 had high blood pressure. The researchers say the study is the first to connect heavy Web use with high blood pressure. Other research has connected heavy Internet use with anxiety, depression and obesity(肥胖).
The lead researcher is Andrea Cassidy-Bushrow. She said, "Using the Internet is part of our daily life, but it shouldn't ruin us." Ms Cassidy-Bushrow adds that it is important for teens to take regular breaks from their computers or smartphones and do some kind of physical activity. She also suggests that parents limit their children's use of the Internet to two hours a day, five days a week.

6.What Is Social Media
Not many people ask the question "What is social media " anymore. Social media has been around for years now, and most of us would probably describe it as any Internet medium that can be used to share information with others, including blogs, forums, applications, games, websites and other stuff.
But let me ask you this: what exactly is so "social" about sitting before a computer setting up a blog and blogging for days without anybody reading it, or scrolling through your Facebook feed of information from 500 friends you barely know If you ask me, it can be way more antisocial than anything.
Social media is not a "thing". It's not just Facebook, WeChat and Weibo. It's more of a frame of mind and a state of being. It's about how you use it to improve your relationships with other people in real life. However, we tend to rely on technology and social media so much that it can actually tear apart those relationships.
Social media isn't about numbers. When someone says "social media", web giants like Facebook, Twitter, WeChat and Weibo instantly pop into our minds, often because they have more updates, more friends, more followers, more links, more photos and more everything. We tend to get distracted by the number game, thinking "volume, volume, volume". It leads to a lot of meaningless noise and information overload. As the old saying goes, quality over quantity is usually the way to go. So, social media is not just about lots of people aimlessly spreading lots of information.
Social media needs to have an "IRL" factor—an Internet slang standing for "In Real Life". It should affect how a person thinks or acts offline. After all, social media shouldn't be an end in itself. It was built to enhance your actual social life, in real life. Take for example an event that a person attends because he is invited by the host on Facebook through a Facebook event page. Something like that definitely has the IRL factor. Likewise, a WeChat photo that touches someone so much that they feel the need to bring it up and describe it to someone else during a dinner date also has the IRL factor.
So, is it really considered to be social to spend an hour scrolling through photos on Weibo, with no thoughtful or emotional effect and no interaction with others In fact, there is no wall between real life and Internet life where true social media exists. Social media is not a specific place on the Internet or just a thing you use to see what other people are doing. It's all about creating meaningful experiences and relationships wherever you may be.
1.What does the underlined phrase "tear apart" in Paragraph 3 mean in the text
A.Destroy.
B.Change.
C.Continue.
D. Strengthen.
2.The writer thinks that social media should be _______.
A.a number of websites where people communicate
B.a set of social tools like Facebook, WeChat and Weibo
C.a collection of online applications where ideas are exchanged
D.a group name for online platforms used to strengthen meaningful relationships
3.According to the author, which of the following cases has an IRL factor
A.Updating Facebook on a regular basis.
B.Following new friends in real life on Facebook.
C.Visiting a museum with friends after reading a story on Weibo.
D.Reading Twitter to see what other people are doing and thinking about.
4.What is the authors purpose of writing this article
A.To explain the importance of social media.

一、阅读理解
1. Today almost everyone knows computers and the Internet. If I ask you what is the most important in your life, maybe you will say computers and the Internet.
The first computer was made in 1946. It was very big but it worked slowly. Today computers are getting smaller and smaller. But they work faster and faster. What can computers do A writer has said, "People can't live without computers today."
The Internet came a little later than computers. It is about twenty-five years later than computers. But now it can be found almost everywhere. We can use it to read books, write letters, do shopping, play games or make friends.
Many students like the Internet very much. They often surf the Internet as soon as they are free. They make friends on the Internet and maybe they have never seen these friends. They don't know their real names, ages, and even sex(性别). They are so interested in making the "unreal friends" that they can't put their hearts into study. Many of them can't catch up with others on many subjects because of that.
We can use computers and the Internet to learn more about the world. But at the same time, we should remember that not all the things can be done by computers and the Internet.
(1).The Internet can not be used for _______.
A.studying B.shopping
C.thinking D.playing
2.When the first computer was invented, it was _______.
A.large and worked quickly
B.small and worked slowly
C.large but worked slowly
D.small but worked quickly
3.The Internet was born in about _______.
A.1960 B.1970
C.1980 D.1985

A.It is terrible.
B.It can make students study harder.
C.It is not good for students.
D.It is helpful, but we can't do everything on it.
2. The Internet brings us many advantages.
With the Internet, people can send and receive e-mails. On the Internet, people can skim over news. Using the Telnet, the user anywhere on the Internet can log into any other machine on which he has an account. It is possible to use the FTP program to copy files from one machine on the Internet to another.
But the Internet also brings us troubles.
Internet use seems to cause a fall in psychological (心理的) health, according to research at Carnegie Mellon University. Even people who spent just a few hours a week on the Internet experienced more depression and loneliness than those who logged on less often, the two-year study showed. And it wasn't that people who were already feeling bad spent more time on the Internet, but that using the Net actually seemed to cause the bad feelings.
Researchers are puzzled over the results, which were completely opposite to what they had expected. They expected that the Net would prove socially healthier than television, since the Net allows users to choose their information and to communicate with others.
The fact that Internet use reduces time used for family and friends may be the reason for the drop in health, researchers said. Faceless, bodiless "virtual" (虚拟的) communication may be less psychologically satisfying than actual conversations, and the relationships formed through it may not be so deep. Another possibility is that exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
"But it's important to remember this is not about the technology; it's about how it is used," said one of the researchers. "It really points to the need for considering social factors (因素) when you design new inventions."
(1).The writer mainly wants to tell us that _______.
A.the Internet can bring people many advantages
B.the Internet use may cause psychological problems
C.the Internet users are not satisfied with their lives
D.we shouldn't use the Internet
(2).Why are the researchers puzzled over the results
A.Because the results were completely different from what they had thought.
B.Because the Net proved socially healthier than television.
C.Because the Internet users were all healthier.
D.Because the Internet users experienced less depression and loneliness.
(3).What may be the reasons why the Internet use causes a fall in psychological health
A.Internet use reduces time used for family and friends.
B.Virtual communication is less psychologically satisfying than actual conversations.
C.Exposure to the wider world through the Net makes users less satisfied with their lives.
D.All of the above.
(4).According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE
A.Users anywhere on the Internet can log into any other machine.
B.The two-year study showed that using the Net seemed to cause the bad feelings.
C.People who are already feeling bad spend much more time on the Internet.
D.Relationships formed through the Internet are usually deep.
3. They like using the Internet. They have lots of pocket money to spend. And they spend a higher proportion of it online than the rest of us. Teenagers are just the sort of people an online seller is interested in, and the things they want to buy—games, CDs and clothing—are easily sold on the Web.
But paying online is a tricky business for consumers who are too young to own credit cards. Most have to use a parent's card. They want a service that allows them to spend money. That may come sooner than they think: new ways to take pocket money into cyber (网络的) space are coming out rapidly on both sides of the Atlantic. If successful, these products can stimulate (刺激) online sales.
In general, teenagers spend huge amounts: $153bn (billion) in the US last year and £20bn annually in the UK. Most teenagers have access to the Internet at home or at school — 88 percent in the US, 69 percent in the UK. According to the Jupiter Research, one in eight of those with Internet access has bought something online—mainly CDs and books.
In most cases, parents pay for these purchases with credit cards, an arrangement that is often unsatisfactory for them and their children. Pressing parents to spend online is less productive than pressing on the high street. They are more likely to ask "Why " if you ask to spend some money online.
One way to help teenagers change notes and coins into cyber cash is through prepaid cards such as Internet Cash in the US and Smart cards in the UK. Similar to those for pay-as-you-go mobile telephones, they are sold in amounts such as £20 or $50 with a concealed (隐藏的) 14-digit number that can be used to load the cash into an online account.
1.What does the word "They" in paragraph 1 refer to
A.Sellers.
B.Buyers.
C.Teenagers.
D.Parents.
2.According to the passage, which of the following statements is TRUE
A.More than half of the teenagers in the US and the UK have Internet access.
B.Teenagers pay for goods online with their own credit cards.
C.Most teenagers in the US and the UK have bought something online.
D.Teenagers found it easier to persuade parents to buy online than in a shop.
3.A new way to help teenagers shop online is to use _______.
A.a new machine
B.special coins and notes
C.prepaid cards
D.pay-as-you-go mobile phones
4.What is the passage mainly about
A.Online shopping traps.
B.Internet users in the US and the UK.
C.New credit cards for parents.

6.答案:
The negative effects of using cellphones on students
As we all know, more and more students use cellphones in school nowadays. Though a cellphone is a useful tool, it could have lots of negative effects on students.
Firstly, using cellphones for a long time does harm to students' health, especially to their eyesight. Secondly, by making calls and sending messages, students seldom communicate with relatives and friends face to face. Thirdly, some students send messages or watch videos instead of listening to teachers in class. As a result, their school grades go down rapidly. Last but not least, students who play with cellphones often have less time to play sports.
Therefore, parents and teachers should limit children's using cellphones.
