1.Magical melodies from the Beatles
There has been plenty to celebrate this October. Not only has it been half a century since the first James Bond movie hit cinemas, but it has also been five decades since the Beatles released their first single Love Me Do.
On Oct 5, 1962, a new song filled Britain's airwaves. It was raw, simple and direct. "Love, love me do," sang the Beatles, "You know I love you."
Love Me Do is the Beatles' debut single and it marked the introduction of a new culture to the UK, a country struggling through post-war poverty.
Inspired by the US rock pioneers, the band stood out with their mop-top haircuts and daring style. They did so in a time when young people had no say in their own lives, wrote Martin Lewis, writer and producer of a number of Beatles-related projects. The band made rebellion constructive with their passionate joyful music.
The mirror journalist Stuart Maconie wrote: "They were the sound of a new young Britain, confident, classless and dynamic. You knew from the rough, charming directness of this music that these were lads who spoke for a coming generation.
Fifty years later, their memorable melodies are still deeply rooted in mcxiem popular culture. Today the Beatles' golden songs are as dynamic and fresh as ever and continue to interest new generations.
So why have the Beatles' songs stood the test of time
The answer lies in the music. They are "a mirror of the 1960s"; many of the songs centre on the lost innocence of youth, which always strikes a chord(引起共鸣) with each succeeding generation.
The BBC website also notes that "There is something eerie, fated, cosmic about the Beatles—those seven quick years of fame and then decades of aftershock." The legacy of their music is still felt today; their cheerful melodies ripple through adverts, TV talent shows and modern pop music in general.

Music has a role in even the most unexciting activities from grocery shopping to commuting or simply doing homework. It’s the soundtrack to our lives. But have we lost focus of what initially attracted us to music
Recently, there has been a rise in the popularity of collecting vinyl records (黑胶唱片) across the world. According to a survey conducted by market research company YouGov last year, one in four 18-24-year-olds bought a vinyl record in the UK. It has reminded some that music is not just background sounds to guide us through our routines, but an art to be appreciated.
Of course, access to music via mp3 players or services and platforms is more convenient, but the appeal of vinyl comes in the authenticity of the sound itself. Older records can have a bit of a “scratchy (带沙沙的杂音的)” sound or have the occasional pop. For some, this makes the music sound more real, particularly if it’s from a musician or band from decades ago. This also gives insight (领悟) into the actual history of the music and the record itself, as each pressing may have its own quirks (奇事).
I myself own records that my parents passed down to me. I can pick one up and see my father’s name on the cover that he scrawled when he was a kid. Putting it on my turntable (唱盘), I get to hear what he heard. Because records are tangible objects, it is a unique way for people to pass music on to younger generations and leave a legacy (遗产) of sorts.
Another benefit to listening to vinyl is that it makes the listener focus on the music itself by its medium alone. As opposed to just pressing a button on your phone, those who listen to records have to pick out the album and play it on a turntable. This requires a conscious effort when making a selection — not just hitting the button to play a pre-recorded playlist. As this is not a mobile medium, the focus is more likely to be on the music.
Of course, the popularity of DJs has also helped bring vinyl into the spotlight in recent years. As more young people are getting into this type of music, they are starting to see how DJs use analog equipment. Rather than armed with just a computer, young artists are toting (携带) around bags of vinyl records and setting up turntables to spin for eager youths.
Without a doubt, this medium has given more focus on what we sometimes take for granted: the joy of music.
1.What did the survey of YouGov show

Former truck driver Chen Xianjun played a final chord (和弦) on the guitar as he and his four band-mates — a salesperson, a farmer and two doctors — enjoyed the sunshine of early winter by West Lake in Zhejiang Province.
“Cherish your life,” Chen sang his song’s last line. Behind him was the photo of a foreigner wearing a warm smile and hugging his guitar. It was the 27-year-old man, Philip Hancock, an Australian teaching English in Chongqing, who made the warm scene come true.
Hancock died in May 2018 in Chongqing. His parents obeyed Hancock’s wish to donate his organs after death. Hancock’s liver and kidneys saved the lives of three people in the band and his corneas (角膜) made the other two regain the eyesight, including Chen.
“Last year, Red Cross officials advised that the five of us form a band in memory of Hancock. They told me that Hancock dreamed of having his own band one day,” Chen said. He accepted the advice instantly, and so did the other recipients of Hancock’s organs. “I’m more than lucky to be able to show respect for the man who gave me a second chance at a full life,” he said.
In the past year, the five “musicians” have learned various instruments. They traveled from different parts of Chongqing and Sichuan Province to meet in a studio for lessons. The Band for One, a fitting name for the group, finally gathered by the lakeside in Hangzhou on November 7 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the implementation (实施) of voluntary organ donations in China.
“I was nervous before stepping on the stage, but I think we all played our parts to the best after so many months of preparation and tension,” Chen Xianjun said. “All the recipients now have the ability to carry on with their lives, and I believe that’s exactly what Hancock wanted for us.”
5.What can we learn from the second and third paragraphs
A. Hancock saved the lives of three people in the band before he died.
B. The lives of the people in the band have changed thanks to Hancock.

D. The five people in the band tried to learn various instruments.
8.Which word best describes the five people’s attitude to Hancock

In be United States the most popular form of folk dancing has been square-dancing since the earlier days. In those days, men and women worked in groups to build a house or harvest crops. When the work was done, they usually danced merrily and happily in a store or in a farm kitchen.
Nowadays square-dancing is still performed. A square, which has four sides, is formed by four couples. Each couple stands on one side of the square, the man on the left and the woman on the right. That is to say, one square has eight people and they stand facing the center of the square.
Large or small numbers of people can dance together. Sometimes as many as 800 or 1,000 people may be dancing all at the same time.
Costumes are worn by those who do the square-dancing. This makes the dancing more colorful to watch. Men may have colored shirts and western trousers they wear only on special days. Women often wear full skirts of different colors with a pretty blouse. In some country areas, everyone wears their best clothes.

1. The Austrian composer, Schubert, was born in Vienna. His father, a schoolmaster, was his first music teacher. When he was 11, he was fortunate in being chosen to one of the Vienna Boy's singing group. There he received a free general education as well as music teaching. He began to compose in these years mostly instrumental or orchestral compositions, but also a few songs. He spent more time in covering sheets of paper with these compositions than at his other studies.
After he left the singing group, Schubert became a schoolmaster to avoid being sent into the army, and he taught at his father's school for 3 years. When only 17, he wrote his first great song, and during the next 2 years he wrote many of his finest songs. After his 3 years' teaching, he lived with various friends, all as penniless as himself, composing all the time, sometimes writing eight songs in a day, and even sleeping in his glasses in case he might have an idea for a song during the night. Although he hated teaching, he earned some money by giving piano lessons.
Schubert never became widely famous outside Vienna during his life. It was late in his short life, and only after much persuasion, that publishers began to print and sell some of his compositions; and Schubert received very little money for these. He had been able to be happy and free to compose, though extremely poor. But a cloud of sadness hung over in his late years. In 1827 he wrote his song-cycle for voice and piano. The Winter Journey and its sadness show his own state of mind. In the autumn of 1828 he fell ill for the second time in his life and died. Almost all his last words were of Beethoven, whom he loved and admired above all other composers. He was buried beside him.
Although Schubert died when only 32, he wrote a great amount of music. He had little academic training but a very sure musical talent. Much of his finest work he never heard performed.

Because he's travelling around all the time, Aaron doesn't have to go to school, but don't envy him too much—he still has to do lessons and homework. And he is good at learning.

Aaron's favourite subject is maths but he hates history. He knows clearly that having a good singing career doesn't mean he can go without schoolwork.

2. Music can make us feel happy or peaceful, energize us to dance, or move us to tears. As an orchestra conductor, Amy Anderson brings music to life, allowing people to experience the feelings that music can bring.
Anderson fell in love with music as a child. She started to sing in school choirs in the first grade, began studying the piano at 7, and started composing at 9. Her school had no orchestra, but she bought many recordings of great orchestras and conductors and listened to them for hours on end.
During a concert, the audience see the back of a conductor and the arm movements she or he uses to lead the orchestra. What the audience do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance.
Months before a concert, Anderson studies a piece of music by playing it on the piano. She decides how she wants each part to sound. Should it be fast or slow Loud or soft She reads about the composer's life and reviews historical events that would have influenced the composer. Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer wanted.
While conducting, Anderson uses her whole body to express how the music should sound and feel. Her movements are dramatic(激动人心的) when the music is energetic and gentle when the music is peaceful.
Each instrument makes a special sound. Although it is not necessary for conductors to know how to play all of the instruments, they must be familiar with the sound of each instrument in the orchestra. To help young musicians understand how to play the music, Anderson will tell them to imagine a calm, leisurely walk or a ship being tossed by waves.
Anderson has seen the audience at her concerts applauding(鼓掌) together in rhythm. She is happy to know that she and the musicians have brought joy into ordinary days.

3. Listening to Mozart does not actually make you cleverer, contradicting(反驳) a popular 1993 study that first coined the Mozart effect, Austrian researchers say.
A team at Vienna University's Faculty of Psychology collected studies that have sought to reproduce the Mozart effect and found no proof of the phenomenon's existence.
The original study showed that teenagers performed better in reasoning tests having listened to Mozart's 1781 Sonata for Two Pianos in D major than those who listened to something else or those who had been in a silent room.
But after analyzing about 3,000 individual cases compiled from 40 studies conducted around the world, the University of Vienna team found no proof that the Mozart effect actually exists.
"Those who listened to music—Mozart or something else, Bach, Pearl Jam—had better results than the silent group. But we already knew people perform better if they have a stimulus(刺激物)," head researcher Jakob Pietschnig said.
Mr Pietschnig says the 1993 study at the University of California only involved 36 students.
He also says the original study was a typical case of "publication bias(出版偏见)" whereby scientific journals prefer positive results to negative or inconclusive results.
When the research was first published in Nature it had a considerable effect on public opinion, leading childcare centres in the United States to play classical music and the southern US state of Georgia to give newborns a free classical music CD.
Mr Pietschnig says the original study was carried out on adults in order to study their reasoning rather than intelligence.
"I advised everyone to listen to Mozart, but it's not going to improve cognitive abilities as some people hope," he said.
(1).Which of the following would be the best title for this passage
A.Mozart effect actually exists
B.Those who listen to music have better results
C.Teenagers shouldn't listen to music
D.Mozart doesn't make you clever
(2).According to the passage, Bach and Pearl Jam in Paragraph 5 are probably _______.
A.names of two places
B.names of two musicians
C.names of two films
D.names of two kinds of music
(3).Which is TRUE about the 1993 study at the University of California according to Mr Pietschnig
A.It had enough participants.
B.It was typical evidence that students who listened to music had better results than the silent ones.
C.It was a subjective prejudice which a publication often held.
D.All the people prefer positive results to negative or inconclusive results.
(4).What Mr Pietschnig said in the last paragraph means that _______.
A.Mozart is not useful

It's important to get my qualifications so that I have something to fall back on."
What the audience do not see is all the work the conductor has done beforehand to prepare for the performance.
Her goal is to recreate the music as the composer wanted.
Amy Anderson brings music to life,B项为最佳标题。

4.答案:surprised
