As I sat on my sofa, I recalled the joy I had experienced back in my glory days, winning National
Championships and representing the United States at the World Championships. I thought of all of the friends I had
made in the sport.
It had been a decade since I entered a competition. Strangely, tears began to roll down my cheeks. Then, for
the first time in many years, I wept openly. I tried to calm myself and walked to the bathroom to wash my face. It
was there that I took a good, long, hard look at myself in the mirror.
I was no longer that marathon runner. I was a middle- aged man to sit behind the desk in my office for the day
and had grown content in my life and appeared comfortable with the increase in the size of my waistline.
When I took a serious look at myself, I knew it was time to change. I lacked discipline (自制力) and had no
readily identifiable goals. Strange quiet came over me. I was going to transform my life. It was time to reinvent
myself, to become all that I could imagine. I asked myself one more question, “What are you willing to do to make
this dream a reality ” The answer was a very simple one, “Whatever it takes!”
The first few days, I was filled with enthusiasm and it was easy to stay on track. I prepared myself mentally
for the difficult days. As the days went by, my newly discovered discipline developed into more discipline. I vowed
(发誓) to remain true to my restricted diet of 1,200 calories per day. I was running for an hour every morning and
lifting weights for another hour three or four days per week. Weight began to reduce. I lost about three pounds
every week. This was feeling good. I was gaining momentum and strength as each day passed. There was no doubt
in my mind that I would get down to my desired weight.

A. He used to be a lawyer. B. He was totally out of shape.
C. He was no longer fit to work out. D. He had something wrong with his waist.

C. He was wiping tears off his face. D. He was dressing up in front of the mirror.
26. Which can replace the underlined word “momentum” in the last paragraph
A. weight B. motivation C. experience D. knowledge
27. How does the author mainly develop the text
A. By telling a funny story. B. By showing possible results.
C. By employing dialogues. D. By describing mental activities.
C
Every week at the Maui airport, a small plane gets loaded with 250,000 passengers. They' re male mosquitoes,
key players in a strategy that could be the last, best hope for Hawaii's endangered birds. There were once more than
50 species of Hawaiian honeycreepers, a kind of small bird. Now, only 17 species are left, with some expected to
go extinct in the wild as soon as this year. Hawaiian honeycreepers are disappearing because of avian malaria (禽疟
疾病), spread by mosquitoes that were introduced to Hawaii by accident in the 1800s. With no immunity (免疫力),
native birds often die after a single mosquito bite.
Still, small pockets of birds have survived because the mosquito attack has been blocked by an invisible line.
Above 4,000 to 5,000 feet in elevation (海拔), temperatures are too cold for mosquitoes, so the birds there have
remained safe. But as temperatures rise with climate change, the mosquitoes are advancing into the birds’ last
remaining shelter.
As a last effort to save the birds, researchers are borrowing a strategy from public health departments. Where
mosquitoes spread human diseases, improved mosquitoes that are unable to reproduce successfully are often
released, helping to limit the overall mosquito population. Now, this strategy is being used for wildlife protection.
So far, millions of male mosquitoes have been delivered by the small plane in high- elevation forests on Maui.
Hawaiian honeycreepers are found nowhere else on Earth and make up an important part of the ecosystem.
Experts say it's difficult to fully understand how biodiversity loss will affect an entire ecosystem. The
disappearance of honeycreepers would also mean the loss of species found nowhere else. Our world would just
become less colorful, less diverse as we continue to let species go extinct.
Finally, the hope is that Hawaiian honeycreepers will develop immunity to avian malaria, as birds in other
places have done. And there's already been a sign it could be possible. Recently, one bird that was thought to be
dead reappeared, far from where it was released, having survived malaria.
28. What is the primary threat to Hawaiian honeycreepers mentioned in paragraph 1
A. Introduction of foreign bird species. B. A disease spread through mosquito bites.
C. Loss of habitat due to human activities. D. Natural disasters affecting the bird population.
29. Why were male mosquitoes released in high- elevation forests on Maui
A. To study their ability to survive. B. To test new methods of mosquito delivery.
C. To control the mosquito population. D. To observe their impact on the ecosystem.
30. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. The importance of biodiversity.
B. The strategies of protecting biodiversity.
C. The potential results of losing Hawaiian honeycreepers.
D. The impact of Hawaiian honeycreepers on the ecosystem.
31. What is the author's attitude to the future of Hawaiian honeycreepers
A. Worried. B. Objective. C. Doubtful. D. Positive.
D
A remarkable discovery has changed the way scientists think about the history of cancer treatment. While
many people think of cancer as a disease that affects only modern- day humans, cancer has been around for
thousands of years and new research shows that humans have also tried to manage it for thousands of years. The
study of two ancient Egyptian skulls (颅骨) held at the University of Cambridge in England suggests that ancient
Egyptians may have performed surgery to manage cancer.
Professor Edgard from the Universidade de Santiago de Compostela in Spain and his team were shocked when
they found cut marks and evidence of cancer in the skulls of two ancient Egyptians dating back 4,000 years. While
Egyptians are well- known for having excellent medical knowledge and treating a range of diseases, they had never
been known for treating cancer.
“The skulls had already been studied in 1963 by other scientists. However, the technology at that time wasn't
advanced enough to pick up the cut marks of surgery found on the skulls,” Professor Edgard said. It was thanks to
the Digital Microscope HR-2016 that scientists spotted surgical cut marks around two cancer lesions (病变).
One limitation regarding cancer is that there are too few cancer cases on ancient human remains. The study of
disease found in animal and human remains aims to find out as much as possible about diseases in the past to help
our understanding of diseases now.
Our discipline is limited by the samples we work with, which depends on the funeral culture of some people as
well as the environment in which they were preserved. Egypt is a great place thanks to its advanced funerary (埋葬
的) practices and the dry weather which preserves remains better.
32. How did Professor Edgard and his team feel when they found the cut marks
A. Surprised. B. Confused. C. Disappointed. D. Overjoyed.
33. Why did scientists fail to find the cut marks in 1963
A. They were too careless. B. They were in such a rush.
C. They lacked advanced technology. D. They had little relevant knowledge.
34. What makes Egypt a great place for preservation according to the last paragraph
A. Its population. B. Its economy. C. Its scenery. D. Its climate.
35. What is the best title for the text
A. Cancer Has Been Around for Thousands of Years
B. Ancient Egyptians Had Found a Cure for Cancer
C. Scientists Assumed Causes for Marks on Ancient Skulls
D. Animal and Human Remains Are Well Preserved in Egypt

said, “We’ re moving to Kenya for three months! Isn't that exciting ”
“We are going to do what ” I asked, choking on the apple piece. Dad had to pat me on my back to make sure I
didn't choke.
“Yes! Going to Kenya!” Mom said. “I will volunteer to help out the poor children and teach them to read, and
Dad is going to work in Nairobi, and you, young lady,” she managed to spare one hand out of the busy kitchen to
pat my shoulder, “are going to help me be a teacher. Won't this be challenging and fun ”
“Fun ” I shouted, “You think this would be fun It will be three whole months living on the middle of
nowhere with all that wildlife. Can't you even imagine the conditions there ”
They both stopped and looked at me. I kept on shouting. “Hey, honey, come over here,” Mom pulled out her
phone to show me some pictures. “Those poor children are all at your age. How can I stand by when I see them
suffering like this ”
I was shocked when I saw those photos of the children. They looked sad, tired and hungry. Their clothes were
not in good condition. They needed our help. I began to hesitate.
“They look so small!” I gasped. “Are you sure they are not two years younger than me ”
“No. They are all kids, just like you. They should have had a nice and comfortable childhood, just like you.
But instead they don't always have the chance to eat a good meal, let alone the chance to learn to read and write.”
I turned to Mom and Dad, and made my choice, “I want to help them.” Two weeks later, we were standing in

ways to meet people. Er, what kinds of events do you organize
M: Well, we have social get- togethers, and sports events, and we also have language evenings.
W: Could you tell me something about the language evenings
M: Yes. Every day except Thursday we have a language evening. People can come and practice their languages—
you know, over a drink or something. We have different languages on different evenings. Monday— Spanish;
Tuesday— Italian; Wednesday— German; and Friday— French. On Thursday we usually have a meal in a
restaurant for anyone who wants to come.
W: Well, that sounds great. I really need to practice my French.

my mind because of an ad for volunteers.
W: That means you want to volunteer
M: Yes. The ad says volunteers are needed to work in Utah in the western United States to protect desert plants and
animals. I think this is an excellent opportunity for me. Do you have any volunteering experiences
W: I once volunteered to protect sea creatures. And I also taught in a primary school as a volunteer. Those are my
precious experiences that make a difference both to the world and to myself.
M: I am already looking forward to my first volunteering experience now.
W: Have you sent your application
M: Yes. And actually, it had been approved.
W: When will you start your work
M: I will start to work from October 1st this year to June 30th next year, with a two- week vacation in December,
when I can have a get- together with my family.

(Text 10)
M: Hello, everyone. I am George. In today's program, I'd like to share an impressive story of mine with you.
Last Sunday, I went back home from shopping in a supermarket. I stood on the road side watching the traffic
carefully. When I saw it was safe, I moved forward to cross the road. Suddenly, a motorbike came from the wrong
side and knocked me down and my things went all over. Thankfully, the driver was driving very slowly. My leg
was only injured slightly. He apologized to me and called a taxi to drive me to the nearby hospital as soon as
possible. After a medical examination, I was told that there was nothing serious. The doctor gave me some
medicine for my injury. The driver insisted on paying the money for my goods, my examination and the medicine,
but I refused. I thanked the driver for making the effort to send me to the hospital. I reminded him of the safety
when he crosses a road. I will also regard this accident as an advance warning to me and be more careful when
going out. Thank you for spending time listening my story.

参考范文:
Dear Chuck,
How are you going I'm writing to share a special event that took place during the
Mid- Autumn Festival here in my city. Our cultural center organized a splendid traditional Chinese cultural
performance, which was a vibrant showcase of our nation's rich culture. The evening was filled with the
harmonious melodies of ancient music, the elegance of classical dances, and the emotive expressions of time-
honored dramas.
I'm excited to hear your thoughts on such cultural events and I want to know whether you' ve had similar
experiences in your part of the world. Looking forward to your reply!
Yours,
Li Hua
第二节:
参考范文:
About three hours later, we arrived where Mom would work. Seeing the poor surroundings— shabby houses
with broken windows and doors, as well as the pathetic children visibly lacking in enough nutrition, I felt my heart
cut deeply into pieces. Then I promised that I would do whatever I could to help them. In the following days, I told
them interesting stories outside, taught beautiful songs and played meaningful games with them, which brought
great fun to them. I had never felt happier than that.
Quickly, three months had passed before I realized it. Though I was unwilling to say goodbye, the day still
came as scheduled. I had to leave my newly- made friends, with whom I spent the most significant three months in
my life. Looking back on those days, I felt extremely satisfied in spite of the adverse living conditions, because
what I experienced there made me realize that the true happiness comes from the feeling of bringing assistance and
happiness to others, especially those badly in need.
