Passage 1(2023-24·广州实验外国语学校)
Growing Potato Plants
Things prepared:
a potato that has sprouts
a flower pot with soil
a camera to record progress
Observation:
Day One
The color of the soil looks darker because I have just watered it. In the center of the pot, I can see a tiny sprout that has grown from the potato under the soil. I’ll call it Buddy. Buddy is green and yellow. I wonder how fast it will grow.
Day Six
Without much change in the past six days, I finally see some new progress on Buddy as it has grown taller. It’s exciting to see new life like this. I hope Buddy can grow faster.
Day Eleven
Buddy is getting larger! Three more new sprouts have grown around Buddy! Green leaves have grown on the new sprouts, but they have not fully grown yet. I guess I need to be a bit more patient.
Day Thirteen
Buddy continues to grow taller. The leaves on the new sprouts have grown a bit. I’m also glad to see more new sprouts that have grown from under the soil.
Day Fifteen
Finally, the leaves on the other sprouts are 3cm tall. They’re so green. I hope they will soon grow into new potatoes.
What I have learned:
It’s really great to grow potatoes. During these fifteen days, I have learned that growing potato plants needs plenty of water. If the soil is dry, the potato won’t grow. The temperature needs to be right. If it is too cold, it won’t grow, either.
I feel that growing plants is just like trying to succeed with anything in life. It takes not only time, but also lots of efforts and patience.

记叙文
Passage 1(2023-24·广东实验期中)
Although there is a huge increase in Earth’s human population, the number of hungry people in the world has actually fallen in the past 30 years. Yuan Longping has contributed more to this achievement than anyone else.
Yuan was born into a poor farmer’s family in 1930 and his parents hoped their son would become a doctor. However, he chose to study farming science at university in Chongqing because he wanted to change the Chinese farmers’ hard life caused by lack of food. His goal was to find a better way to grow rice and help feed the people in his country.
The first major breakthrough for Dr Yuan came in 1970 when he discovered a type of wild rice in Hainan. Within three years, Dr Yuan had created the world’s first hybrid rice, by combining the Hainan rice with more traditional rice types. This new rice allowed farmers to produce 30% more rice without the need for more land. Many farmers started using Yuan’s new rice which finally allowed over 70 million Chinese people to escape hunger. But Dr Yuan has not finished yet.
In 1986 Yuan began developing an improved type of hybrid rice that was even better. It needed less water and labor to produce even more rice. Though it was a difficult process, Yuan never gave up. Eventually, in 1995, experiments of Yuan’s new hybrid rice began in 55 counties throughout China and the results were so spectacular that it was quickly made available throughout China.
Yuan hasn’t limited his efforts to helping only China. His hybrid rice has been introduced to countries such as Madagascar and Kenya, where they have been able to produce up to 4 times as much rice as before.
When he was over 90 years old, he still kept working tirelessly. However, he didn’t care about being famous. He felt it gave him less freedom to do his research. Spending money on himself or leading a comfortable life also meant very little to him. Indeed, he believed that a person with too much money has more rather than fewer troubles. He therefore gave millions of yuan to support others for their research in agriculture (农业).
29. Why did Yuan choose to study farming science
A. Because he was born in a farmer’s family without enough food.

Passage 2(2023-24·龙岗区联考期中)
In 2004, when my daughter Becky was ten, she and my husband, Joe, were united because they wanted a dog, Misty. And they promised to walk her every day.
But from the second day, neither thought to walk the dog again. I was slow to accept that I would be the one to feed and clean her. As she looked up at the three new humans in her life, she calculated, “The middle-aged woman is the stupidest one.”
Quickly, she and I developed something special. She’d look at me with those sad brown eyes of hers, and then wait, trusting I would understand her, which I almost always did.
Even so, part of me continued to hate the walking duty Joe and Becky had promised to carry out. It nearly drove me mad. “Not fair!” I’d loudly remind everyone I knew.
On January 1, 2007, Joe’s doctor said an unthinkable word—leukemia (白血病). With that, I spent eight to ten hours a day with him in the hospital, doing anything and everything I could to ease his discomfort. Every part of my life changed; no part of my old life remained.
Save one—Misty still needed walking. At the beginning, when my friends wanted to help walk her, I refused because I knew they were busy.
As months went by, I began to realize that I actually wanted to walk Misty. The walk in the morning before I headed to the hospital was a quiet, peaceful time to clear my head.
After Joe died in 2009, Misty slept on his pillow.
The truth is, after these years, I’ve come to enjoy my walks with Misty. She reminded me that no matter how hard the present or unpredictable the future, there’s almost always some joy in my life.

However, because Leonardo was born to parents who were not married to each other, he was stopped from some studies. He trained as an artist after moving to Florence with his father in the 1460s. It was an exciting time to be in Florence, one of the cultural capitals of Europe, Leonardo trained with one of the city’s very successful artists, Andrea del Verrocchio. Passage 5(2023-24·广州第七中学)
Still in shock! I moved around the house purposeiessly trying to decide what to put into the suitcases. Earlier that evening, I’d received a call telling me that my brother was killed in a car crash. “Come as soon as you can.” cried my mother.
I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere. I purposelessly picked things up and put them down. Mother’s crying went through my head again and again.
Larry called some friends to tell them what had happened. Someone asked to speak to me. “If there’s anything I can do, let me know.” But I didn’t know what to ask for.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. It was Emerson. He and his wife Donna lived in the block nearby.
“I’ve come to clean your shoes,” he said.
I asked him to repeat.
“Donna had to stay with the baby,” he said, “but we want to help you.” I remember when my father died.
I gathered all our dirty shoes to the kitchen. Emerson got to work right away. Watching him devoting himself to one task helped me pull my own thoughts into order. I told myself to wash clothes first. Then, Larry and I bathed the children and put them to bed. One job after another.
When we returned to wash the dishes, Emerson had left. All our shoes stood in a line against the wall, clean, we left for the airport with all the jobs done.
Now whenever I hear of a friend who’s lost a loved one, I no longer call with the polite offer, “If there’s anything I can do...” Instead, like taking the dog to the boarding kennel (狗屋; 养狗场) or house-sitting during the funeral (葬礼) , “How did you know I needed that one ” I reply, “Because a man once cleaned my shoes.”

Passage 7
That night, July 11, 2022, Nick was driving down the streets of Lafayette, Indiana, when he found a two-story house was on fire.
Flames(火焰) were climbing up the front door way. In no time, Nick stopped his car and ran from the backdoor into the burning building, which belongs to the Barrett family.
Nick had just started climbing the stairs when he looked up and saw four faces appear from a room at the top of the stairs. They looked down at him with fear. “Your house is on fire, you need to go!” Nick yelled.
Nick hurried the four girls into the fresh air. “Is anybody else in there ” Nick asked.
“Kelly is in there! We can’t find her!” Sarah, the eldest of the girls, screamed referring to her six-year old sister. Without thinking, Nick ran back inside at once.
By now, the whole side of the house was in flames. Nick went upstairs. He searched every bedroom. No kid. The smoke was thick now. He lifted his T-shirt trying to cover his mouth and nose when he heard the sound of crying, from the dark smoke below.
Nick felt about in the blackness and heat, moving downstairs toward the sound. Then suddenly Kelly was in front of him. Nick quickly lifted the girl into his arms. He thought, “Where is the front door ” Nick remembered seeing a window on the side of the house where the fire hadn’t reached.
Nick climbed back up, made it to the room and broke the glass. Kelly was still in his arms.
Kelly looked down at the open grassy space. The girl said, “I don’t want to jump out of the window.” Nick was thinking the exact same thing.
But they had little choice. The flames were coming ever closer. Holding Kelly tightly in one arm, Nick ran forward and threw himself out of the window. He managed to land on the other shoulder. Kelly was almost unhurt.
Days passed. Nick woke up from first-degree burns to his legs and arms. He felt like he’d just done what anyone would have done in that situation. But outside the hospital, the story of Nick was already spreading. He was a hero who had run into a burning building not once, but twice.

Passage 8
“Is there anything you want from Grandma’s apartment ” My uncle, texting me, last week.
His mum had passed away the week before, aged 96. He’d begun the painful yet necessary task of dividing her things: keep, sell, donate.
I answered without thinking. “Yes, I would like her aloe (芦荟) in the orange pot, please.”
Sometime around 1975, Grandma received this plant from a local cook as a gift. It could, I suppose, just be anything like a calendar, or a pen, or a box of biscuits. But it just happened to be a plant, which Grandma, who always had green fingers, appreciated and placed in her doorway.
Five years later, my mum married the cook’s son. And had me.
When my father’s mother died in 1993, Grandma told me how this plant was different from the other ones she had in her home. It helped to keep a good relationship between the two sides of the family.
In recent years, whenever we visited Grandma’s apartment, I would show it to my children. “Look at this, it was a gift your great-grandma bought for your other great-grandma! Before they became relatives!”
Many times, Grandma gave me cuttings of this plant, in the hope that I might grow another. Yet, every time, I failed to take care of my offshoots (分支). Aloe is hardy (适应力强). However, if you over-water or under-water it, it dies. It doesn’t mix well with dogs or under-heated flooring. In short, with my skills, I’m better off with a plastic one from a supermarket.
But that didn’t use to matter, because I could ask Grandma for another cutting and try again Now I can’t. So straight after I asked my uncle for this plant, I came up with the idea: the plant will go and live with Ann, my wife’s mother, who can grow plants well and keep hold of Grandma’s aloe---at least until I can be trusted to look after its offshoots. Then maybe one day I can confidently place the mother plant in my own home. At the same time, Ann will spread cuttings among her family members, as Grandma used to do.
41. Why did the author ask his uncle for the aloe

A. can grow well with dogs in the house B. may die if it is watered too often

Passage 9
Robert and Henry were going home for lunch from school when, on turning a corner, Robert cried out, “A fight! Let’s go and see!”
“No.” said Henry, “let’s go home quietly and not meddle with(参与) this fight. We have nothing to do with it, and may get into trouble.”
“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went back to school, as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal.

Passage 10
I sent a message to my sister at 12:30 p.m. during my lunch to ask her about my father’s progress. He was having his second knee surgery (手术) and my expectations were the same as the last successful surgery. My brother picked me up from school and we headed for the hospital.
★ , my first question was “How is he doing ”. My father was connected to a breathing machine and his face was swollen (肿). I tried my best not to cry because I was supposed to explain to him what was happening as the nurses did not speak Spanish. I had never seen my father this way. He looked so weak and different from the strong man I knew. I asked him how he was feeling and he said he was fine. I returned to the hall and I realized that my hero, best friend, and loved one in life was in a dangerous state and at that point anything could happen.
I recalled what happened when I was a child. “I’m going to the store.” he always said. Of course that was my reason to follow him. We would walk to the car, and sometimes if I was lucky, I was able to sit in the front seat. We would arrive at the store and he always said, “Get whatever you want and something for Ana.” Ana is my sister. My dad and I were best friends. He never showed preference with his children, but I just always happened to follow him. It was okay for me to cry when I wanted something because I was his youngest girl and he couldn’t say no to me.
My father spent his whole life giving us the best. Growing up does not necessarily mean that one must keep oneself away from his parents because it中小学教育资源及组卷应用平台

I wanted to hurry to her at once. But my husband, Larry, and I were packing to move from New York to Seattle. Our house was in total mess. Supper dishes sat on the kitchen table. Toys lay everywhere.

“You are a coward, and afraid to go,” said Robert, and off he ran. Henry went straight home, and in the afternoon went back to school, as usual. But Robert had told all the boys that Henry was a coward, and they laughed at him a great deal.
However, Henry knew that true courage was far more than that. He knew that he should be afraid of nothing but doing wrong.
A few days later, Robert was swimming with some schoolmates and got out of his depth. He struggled and cried for help, but nobody answered. The boys who had called Henry a coward got out of the water as fast as they could and did not even try to help him.
Robert was going down fast when Henry threw off his clothes and jumped into the water. He reached Robert just in time. With great effort, and with much danger to himself, he brought Robert to the riverbank and saved his life.

Growing up does not necessarily mean that one must keep oneself away from his parents because it is childish.
