例题
“You can use me as a last resort (选择), and if nobody else volunteers, then I will do it.” This was an actual reply from a parent after I put out a request for volunteers for my kids' lacrosse (长曲棍球) club.
I‘m secretly relieved because I know there’s real power in sharing volunteer responsibilities among many. The unwilling parent organize the meal schedule, sends out emails, and collects money for end of season gifts. Somewhere along the way, the same parent ends up becoming an invaluable member of the team. The coach is able to focus on the kids while the other parents are relieved to be off the hook for another season. Handing out sliced oranges to bloodthirsty kids can be as exciting as watching your own kid score a goal.
Still, most of us volunteers breathe a sigh of relief when the season comes to a close. That relief is coupled with a deep understanding of why the same people keep coming back for more: Connecting to the community (社区) as you freely give your time, money, skills, or services provides a real joy. Volunteering just feels so good.
In that sense, I'm pretty sure volunteering is more of a selfish act than I'd freely like to admit. However, if others benefit in the process, and I get some reward too, does it really matter where my motivation lies
①What can we learn about the parent from paragraph 3
A. She gets interested in lacrosse. B. She is proud of her kids.
C. She‘ll work for another season. D. She becomes a good helper.
②Why does the author like doing volunteer work
A. It gives her a sense of duty. B. It makes her very happy.
C. It enables her to work hard. D. It brings her material rewards.

A schoolgirl saved her father's life by kicking him in the chest after he suffered a serious allergic (过敏的) reaction which stopped his heart.
Izzy, nine, restarted father Colm's heart by stamping (踩) on his chest after he fell down at home and stopped breathing.
Izzy's mother, Debbie, immediately called 999 but Izzy knew doctors would never arrive in time to save her father, so decided to use CPR.
However, she quickly discovered her arms weren't strong enough, so she stamped on her father's chest instead.
Debbie then took over with some more conventional chest compressions (按压) until the ambulance arrived.
Izzy, who has been given a bravery award by her school, said: “I just kicked him really hard. My mum taught me CPR but I knew I wasn't strong enough to use hands. I was quite scared. The doctor said I might as well be a doctor or a nurse. My mum said that Dad was going to hospital with a big footprint on his chest.”

How far would you go to make a good impression at a new job A college student in Alabama walked 32 kilometers in the dark to get to his new job.
The story begins with Walter Carr's car breaking down the night before starting a new job at Bellhops, a furniture moving company. Carr was unable to find a ride. So, he figured out how long it would take to walk from his house to the job in Pelham--32 kilometers away. He left at midnight so that he could make it the customer’s house by 8:00 am the next morning.
Pelham police saw him walking along a highway at 4:00 am. So, they stopped to see if he needed help. After hearing his story, they took him to a restaurant for breakfast and then to a church where he could safely wait until 8:00 am. The police then took Carr to the home of customer Jenny Lamey. Lamey said that even though Carr had just walked the entire night, he refused her offer to rest. He just wanted to start working. While he worked, he talked with the customer, telling her how much he liked her kitchen.
Jenny Lamey later wrote this on Facebook: "I just can't tell you how touched I was by Walter and his journey. He is humble and kind and cheerful and he has big dreams! He is hardworking and tough.”
She then started a GofundMe page to help Walter with money to get his car fixed. When the CEO of Bellhops, Luke Marklin, learned of Carr’s story, he drove from Tennessee to Alabama to give Walter his own 2014 Ford Escape. Walter Carr’s story touched many others around the USA. BOSTON(Reuters)—A powerful ice storm knocked out power to about 1.2 million homes and businesses across New York and New England on Friday, closing roads, delaying trains and forcing the state of Maine to shut government offices.
“This is a very, very serious situation,” New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch said after declaring an emergency in his state, where as many as 400,000 lost power in what local authorities described as the worst outage (停电) in three decades. “I don't think anyone anticipated it would be as bad as it is,” Lynch said, calling the bad effects far greater than an infamous 1998 storm when 55,000 homes lost power and some went a full week in the dark. A 49-year-old man died from carbon monoxide (一氧化碳) poisoning while trying to heat his camper with a generator, New Hampshire officials said, warning residents who lost electricity to prepare to go without power until Wednesday.
Massachusetts called in about 500 National Guard troops to clear roads and help residents, while utilities officials from across the region said the outage could grow as strong winds continue to break off tree branches and bring down power lines. Power may not return to thousands in Massachusetts until Monday.
With freezing weather forecast for the weekend, some residents stocked up on propane(丙烷) to fuel power generators to keep the heat on. "It’s going to be cold this weekend, ” said Steve Brady, a meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s southern New England office, predicting temperatures well below freezing.
“I couldn't even sleep because the noise of the trees hitting the ground was so loud” said Samantha Appleton of Merrimack, New Hampshire. Andrew Manuse, editor of the Manchester Express, said tree branches were seen everywhere. "One is lying on my fence, " he said. "Power’s out. Water’s out Heater’s out. There's a tree on my neighbor's roof. Thankfully, no one was injured.
In Maine, at least 215,000 were without power, mostly in southern and coastal areas, and the number was expected to rise and the restoration is likely to last well into next week in many areas. Government offices were shut in the state. In Vermont, state officials opened three emergency shelters and urged residents to stay off road covered by ice.

Lying in the sun on a rock, the cougar (美洲豹) saw Jeb and his son, Tom, before they saw it. Jeb put his bag down quickly and pulled his jacket open with both hands, making himself look big to the cougar. It worked. The cougar hesitated, ready to attack Jeb, but ready to forget the whole thing, too.
Jeb let go of his jacket, grasped Tom and held him across his body, making a cross. Now the cougar’s enemy looked even bigger, and it rose up, ready to move away, but unfortunately Tom got scared and struggled free of Jeb.
