(2024届重庆巴蜀中学)
2024 is the year of the dragon! In Chinese culture, the dragon is a powerful and mysterious creature. It's not a real animal but a combination (结合) of many animals' features. Dragons usually live in the river, well and ocean. They can control water, rain and floods. When they sneeze(打喷嚏),it will rain
Chinese dragons represent(代表) power: wisdom and good luck. In ancient China, it was believed that the emperor, who was called the“ Son of the Dragon”, had a special connection to
the dragon and its power. Only emperors could wear clothes with dragon pattens, and their throne(王位) was called the Dragon Throne.
Nowadays, Chinese people are still proud to call themselves the“descendants(传人) of the
dragon”. People born in the year of the dragon are said to have special qualities. They are often
strong-willed, confident, and passionate. They are also believed to be lucky and successful in
life. So excellent and outstanding people are often compared to dragons. No wonder parents always
want their children to become dragons!
However, where I am from, we have different feelings about dragons. In the Bible(圣经), dragons represent the devil(恶魔) and trick the world. Western people usually see dragons as cold-blooded animals, like snakes. They are dishonest because of their forked tongues(叉形舌). They are cruel killers, breathing fire and catching women. So it is a common tale for a knight(骑士) to kill a dragon and save a princess. Even the popular boy Harry Potter has to beat a deadly dragon and get back a golden egg from its nest
Because of this, some Chinese experts suggested changing the English word for Chinese dragons to its pinyin, “long”. They believe the name “dragon” makes western people think badly about China. But some don't agree. They think Chinese people can look after their own culture.
Well, living in China for more than ten years, I already know the difference, and I also love the
Chinese dragons!

My mom isn't fancy like other moms. They wear fancy clothes and drive fancy cars. My mom wears her gardening clothes when she walks me to school.
When fancy moms laugh, their laughs sound soft and whispery. You can hear my mom's laugh
from down the hall. I show her how to laugh quietly and she practices. But before long she starts laughing even harder than before. At the talent show, my mom cheers loudly, “Bravo, everyone! Bravo!” instead of clapping politely the way fancy moms do.
For our class hike, parents are invited. At breakfast I go over my rules for Mom, “Please don't
whistle. Don’t laugh loudly. No clapping. And stay in line."
The other moms show up wearing fancy jackets and sneakers. My mom wears cutoffs, a floppy straw hat, and her old hiking boots.
We hike along, all in a line. Soon Mom starts to whistle her hiking songs, She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain. I shake my head at her. She stops and whispers, “Oops. Sorry, Jane.”
We keep hiking. Everything is perfect until.. Our teacher, Mrs. Steele, stops and points, “A
snake!" All the moms hold their kids' hands and back up, except my mom. “Look out! It might be
poisonous(有毒的)!”Mrs. Steele says.
The other moms shuttle back(往返穿梭) some more.- However, my mom steps forward and says, “Hmm. Let’s see what kind it is. Nope, it’s not poisonous.'

The other moms scream, not sounding fancy at all.
Kids gather around as Mom examines the snake. “It's OK to touch,” she says. Everyone’s too frightened, but I go first. “Snakes aren't slimy(黏滑的),” I tell them. Right away, others line up, A couple of the fancy moms come up to touch the snake's tail.
Later, Mrs. Steele tells us to draw our favorite part of the hike. After a while, I look around
quickly. Everyone’s picture is of Mom and me with the snake
As we hike back to the bus, I squeeze Mom's hand. “I'm glad I didn't tell you my don't-catch-
snakes rule." She smiles. But soon, she's whistling her hiking songs again!

A few weeks ago, we attended a lesson given by our classmate Wu Ruijie who talked about some of her experiences in America. It was very interesting and lively. We all listened carefully and were moved by the lesson.
During the lesson, she shared some stories about her daily life in the United States and some
culture shocks(文化冲击) that she experienced with us. I still remember the story she told which
took place on the New York subway. One day, she was talking to her Chinese friend on her mobile phone while a black woman was standing beside her. She often used a Chinese word whose pronunciation was similar to the rude(粗鲁的) N-word, so the black woman started to very angrily glare at(怒视) her. This was only one of her stories.
Ms. Wu also shared a story she had experienced when she was in Australia. On a hot sunny day, while she was walking on the street holding an umbrella to protect herself from the strong sunlight, suddenly a man behind her said to her, “Is it raining ” The reason is that in Australia people don’t use umbrellas on sunny days, so the man thought it was strange and asked her.
Through the embarrassing stories, we can see many differences from country to country to
decide how we should deal with these situations when we go abroad. Here are some suggestions.
First, you should respect everyone wherever you are. Second, learn some local culture before you
get there. Third, if you make some mistakes, you should explain the reasons. Finally, keep a
kind heart at all times.
All in all, culture shock is not a big deal as long as we treat others kindly. Please pay attention to learning western culture.
9、 If you say a word similar to the N-word to a black man, he will think you are___________.
A. interested B. bored C. lonely D. unfriendly
10、When we go abroad and face the differences, we should_____________.
A. only respect the local people B. leave the country at once
C. keep a kind heart at all times D. take a lot of money with us
11、 The organization of this passage is________________.
12、The writer's purpose is to_______________.
A. show people how to respect the black woman B. encourage people to be more active
C. give suggestions to deal with the culture shock D. share some interesting stories with people

[2022浙江杭州中考.改编]What did people do to communicate in ancient times Here are some very interesting answers to this question.
Alphorns(阿尔卑斯长号)were once used to communicate in the mountains in Switzerland. They are very long and they are very heavy, too. So, alphorns are hard to blow. Then why do people use them Well, they make a loud sound which travels much further than the human voice. Herdsmen (牧民) used them to call cows in the distance for milking At sunset, alphorns were also used to send a message down to villagers that all went well. These days, they're mostly used as musical instruments.
The people of La Gomera, an island in Europe, have their own special way of sending messages from mountain to mountain. They use a whistled (口哨的) language called el silbo, which comes from their language Spanish. Whistling can be heard within five kilometers, which means it can be used across much greater distances than shouting. El silbo can be used for all kinds of messages, including greetings and announcements. El silbo is used a lot less than it used to be, but the primary school students in La Gomera have to learn it
Did you know it’'s also possible to send messages without making a noise This is called
visual communication, and it includes the use of flags and even smoke. Long ago, soldiers along the Great Wall of China used smoke as a warning. If they noticed the enemy from their signal(信号) tower, they lit a smoky fire. When soldiers in other towers saw the smoke signal, they lit fires too. In this way, messages about the enemy’s arrival could travel far as 800 km in just a few hours.
13、What are alphorns mostly used for today
A. Communicating in the mountains. B. Calling cows for milking
C. Sending messages down to villagers. D. Playing a kind of music.
14、 Why do the people of La Gomera use el silbo to communicate
A. Because it can send messages to animals. B. Because it is different from their language.
C. Because it can be heard at a great distance. D. Because it is a subject for young students.
15、 How did soldiers along the Great Wall get warning messages between towers
A. By listening. B. By whistling. C. By shouting. D. By watching.

The meaning of silence is different among different cultures.
Many people in some Asian cultures think silence is a basic part of communication. When a
traditional Chinese or Thai is speaking and suddenly stops, he probably wants the listener to consider what he has said before he continues. Many people may think silence is a sign of respect(尊敬), especially to an elder or a person with power(权力).
Western cultures may use silence in other ways. In America, if you keep silent in a conversation, the speaker may think you’re impolite or not listening to them carefully. Russian, French, and Spanish people may use silence to show they agree with the discussion of the topic. However, Mexicans may keep silent when instructions are given by a person with a lot of power, even though they don't agree with the instructions.
In our daily life, sometimes silence works well. A man was ill in hospital. One morning, when the nurse said “Hello!” to him, he said “Hello!” back. “How are you feeling now ” the
nurse continued. But the man lay in bed and looked at the nurse, saying nothing. “Not well, right Then I will check it for you, OK " The patient was still silent. Then the nurse passed him a cup of warm water. He drank it quickly. After that, the nurse checked up on his health. “Mr. Smith, your blood pressure is a little high. But don't worry. You'll soon be well again after taking some medicine." The man smiled and said, “You’re the best nurse I’ve ever met. ”

How to deal with my phone
Set your phone to silent or vibrate(振动),and keep it in a pocket or bag from the 2 . To the end of your meal 3 there's an emergency(紧急情况),don't answer it. If you need to take a phone call, excuse yourself from the table first by saying something like, “Excuse me, I need to take this. I’ll be right back. "
When to start eating
Don't start 4 immediately as you sit down. It’s rude to start if other people's food hasn’t arrived. 5 ,wait patiently in your seat before taking your first bite.
How to use a fork and knife
Hold your fork and knife carefully like you're holding a pencil. When you need to cut food on the plate, hold the knife in your 6 . hand and your fork in your left. Then, you can use your fork 7 in your left hand or in your right hand after putting the knife down.
What if there’s an emergency
If you need to check your phone or go to the bathroom 8 the meal at any point, “excuse me” before standing up so others know you need to go somewhere. You don't need to give the reason why you're leaving as long as you come back and sit down again.

Author Elizabeth Becker says we have responsibility(责任) to respect the places we visit. Some basic rules still hold, such as not traveling at busy times and taking fewer trips but making them longer. The best and easiest 1 to be a responsible traveler is to use common sense and go local.
Respect traditions. Read about the culture and traditions of the places you visit. Understand
the local culture and customs to avoid 2 any mistakes. For example, dress properly when you visit temples(寺庙) and don't eat or talk 3 in religious(宗教的) sites. If you visit a beach, leave seashells where you find them and try not to catch fish while swimming.
Learn the language.
4 expects you to become fluent(流利的), but try to learn some basic phrases such as “please” and “thank you”. You'll be amazed at how much nicer and more helpful people will be if they know you're making an effort to get used to their culture.
Stay local. Stay away from international hotels and restaurants run by foreigners 5 using local guides, buying local products and staying in family run hotels, you're not only giving back to the community, but you also get a better understanding of the country you stay in and the people who 6 there.
Bargain(讨价还价)fairly. Always be 7 when you try to get a lower price. Sometimes goods at the local market can seem expensive. Nobody likes to be cheated and it may be fun to bargain, but remember that for the local people bargaining may not be a game. So try not to be too rude when bargaining. Don’t litter. In some countries, getting rid of waste is a big problem, so don't throw rubbish on the ground. Doing so is harmful to the environment and unpleasant for others. Hold on to your rubbish 8 you find a bin(垃圾箱).

Have you ever shown your photos on your favorite social media(社交媒体) or have you expressed your feelings and emotions on your online page If so, do you know what you have posted on the social medias can 1 problems you could not expect
Cathy, a girl who is going to be fifteen, posted online an invitation to her birthday party with her a 2 in it. And guess what! 500 people came to the party, and some even broke the windows and plants, making a total mess of the house. The girl’s birthday party turned into a bad dream.
Many teenagers think they know everything about social media, and that such a thing could never happen to them. 3 , studies show that each year more than three million young people in the world get into trouble because of their online activities.
So do remember these if you really want to share something online.
Share with care!
Not everyone will like 4 you write online. Think before you post anything. You never
know who sees your texts, pictures or videos. Before clicking "post”", ask 5 “How will I feel if my family or teachers see this " and "How might this post be bad for me in five or ten years from now "
Be polite when writing!
Imagine how you feel if someone is 6 in real life. The same is true of online communication. No one likes it when you “shout’ in your messages So, it's necessary for you to read your message again and make sure there's no unsuitable(合适的) words before you send it.
P 7 and respect!
Never share your passwords(密码) with anyone else and it's not wise to post your personal information online or you may put yourself in a dangerous situation. What's more, don't say bad things about people online and always remember that the best way to respect yourself is to respect others. If you get messages like that or sec them online, talk 8 your parents or your teachers
immediately.
I'd say none of the suggestions above can promise 100% online safety, but each will help you to be safer.

1 body language can mean something completely different because of culture From what you do with your eyes or hands between speakers, there are large differences in how people from different countries use their 2 to communicate. Let's take a look at some examples.
Eye contact(接触)
Prolonged(持久的) eye contact is a sign of confidence in most Western countries. 3 ,in
many African, Asian and Latin American countries, unbroken eye contact can be seen as impolite behavior. But in the Middle East, eye contact lasts longer only b 4 people of the same sex(性别).
Physical contact
“Rules” on physical contact usually differ depending on age, sex, profession and so on. But
in general, people from high contact cultures such as Southern Europe, Latin America and the Middle East like to stand 5 when speaking and like to touch often. Those from low contact
cultures, such as the Far East, stand farther apart and usually a 6 physical contact.
Hand gestures(手势)
Hand gestures are also different from country to country. Using the “OK” sign is not OK in Brazil, Greece, Spain or Turkey. And if you want to tell 7 he did a good job in Greece or the Middle East, you can't do as we do in China. And in most of Asia, curling(弯曲) your index finger(食指) to ask someone to come is fine for dogs, but not for people - especially in the Philippines, where you could be p 8 under the law.
