Whether you’re a boy or a girl and whether you’re a freshman or a senior, developing the following skills will help you achieve success in school and in life.
Time management. There are just 24 hours in each day. What you do with that time makes all the difference. While high school students have an average of 35 hours per week of class time, college students have an average of 15 to 18 hours per week.Manage your free time wisely and you’ll make full use of each day.
Good study habits. If you’ve got them,it’s great. If not, there’s still time to develop them.Good study habits include the following.
Always be prepared for class, and attend classes regularly. No cutting!
Finish homework in a timely manner.
Review your notes daily rather than study for tests the night before.
Set aside quiet time each day for study, even if you don’t have homework or a test the next day!
Good note-taking.You can’t possibly set down everything the teacher says since we talk at a pace of about 225 words per minute. But,you do need to set down the important materials.Note-taking should be in a way that’s the most helpful to you.You can try writing notes on different coloured cards. If you really have a problem with note-taking,you might ask your teacher if you can record daily lessons.Do whatever it takes!
Review of daily notes.Don’t wait until the night before the test to review your notes.Go over your notes each day while the lecture is still fresh in your mind.Add any missing pare your notes with a classmate’s notes.Review your notes each day to improve your learning and build towards your final goal:mastery of the subject or skill.

I must have always known reading was very important because the first memories I have as a child deal with books. There was not one night that I don’t remember Mum reading me a storybook by my bedside.I was extremely inspired by the elegant way the words sounded.
I always wanted to know what my mum was reading.Hearing Mum say,“I can’t believe what’s printed in the newspaper this morning,” made me want to grab it out of her hands and read it myself.I wanted to be like my mum and know all of the things she knew.So I carried around a book, and each night, just to be like her,I would pretend to be reading.
This is how everyone learned to read.We would start off with sentences, then paragraphs, and then stories. It seemed an unending journey, but even as a six-year-old girl I realised that knowing how to read could open many doors. When Mum said,“The C-A-N-D-Y is hidden on the top shelf,”I knew where the candy was.My progress in reading raised my curiosity, and I wanted to know everything.I often found myself telling my mum to drive more slowly,so that I could read all of the road signs we passed.
Most of my reading through primary, middle and high school was factual reading.I read for knowledge, and to make A’s on my tests.Occasionally,I would read a novel that was assigned, but I didn’t enjoy this type of reading.I liked facts, things that are concrete.I thought anything abstract left too much room for argument.
Yet,now that I’m growing and the world I once knew as being so simple is becoming more complex,I find myself needing a way to escape.By opening a novel,I can leave behind my burdens and enter into a wonderful and mysterious world where I am now a new character. In these worlds,I can become anyone.I don’t have to write down what happened or what technique the author was using when he or she wrote this.I just read to relax.
We’re taught to read because it’s necessary for much of human understanding.Reading is a vital part of my life.Reading satisfies my desire to keep learning. And I’ve found that the possibilities that lie within books are limitless.
4.Why did the author want to grab the newspaper out of Mum’s hands
A.She wanted Mum to read the news to her.
B.She was anxious to know what had happened.
C.She couldn’t wait to tear the newspaper apart.
D.She couldn’t help but stop Mum from reading.
5.What was the author’s view on factual reading
A.It would help her update test-taking skills.
B.It would allow much room for free thinking.
C.It would provide true and objective information.
D.It would help shape a realistic and serious attitude to life.
6.The author takes novel reading as a way to .
A.explore a fantasy land
B.develop a passion for learning
C.learn about the adult community
D.get away from a confusing world
7.What could be the best title for the passage
A.The Magic of Reading
B.The Pleasure of Reading
C.Growing Up with Reading
D.Reading Makes a Full Man
六、七选五阅读理解
If you are hungry, what do you do Have your favourite meal and stay quiet after that. 1 But you don’t realise it,because your mind is busy thinking about your friends or favourite stars. If your mind is always hungry,it doesn’t grow. When your mind fails to grow, creativity stops. This might be the reason why we all sometimes think “What happens next ” “Why can’t I think ”
2 Why reading but not watching TV It is because reading has been the most educative tool used by us right from childhood.Since it helps with other parts of our life,we have to get help from reading.
Once you read a book, you run your eyes through the lines and your mind tries to explain something to you. 3 Now this seed is used by you to develop new ideas, although you don’t realise it.If it is used many times, the same seed can give you great help to create a lot of things, which you would have never thought of in your wildest dreams!
This is nothing but creativity. 4 When you’ve read widely enough, you can start talking with your friends in English or any other language and find yourself able to freely use plenty of good right words.
So dear friends,do give food to your mind by reading, reading and more reading. 5 Go and get a book!
A.Now what are you waiting for
B.Reading can help you make more friends, too.
C.Just like your stomach, your mind is also hungry.
