Timmy, who was an experienced bus driver, always greeted his passengers, including his usual friend, a thirteen- year- old Jonathan, with a smile, when they boarded his bus. But this morning was different.
Because of the heavy snowfall last night, almost everyone at the bus stop rushed inside Timmy’s bus to avoid the cold, making the bus more crowded than ever. After twenty minutes, he arrived at his first stop for the day. A few passengers got off the bus. While the bus was still crowded, it appeared to have more space. Timmy breathed a sigh of relief and continued on his way to the next stop of the day. However, he was amazed to hear the bus passengers arguing.
“I don’t know what’s wrong with the kids these days! ” Timmy heard a young man complaining loudly. Timmy immediately looked in the driving mirror. But there were so many passengers that he couldn’t find out who had expressed his displeasure.
“Look at those big eyes just staring at you! Can’t you see that the poor old lady is in trouble She has been standing for so long! ” Timmy heard another woman complaining. When Timmy looked in the mirror again, he noticed a middle- aged woman standing beside an elderly woman, looking with dissatisfaction at a window seat where Jonathan was seated.
“Well, ” the elderly woman spoke up. “I don’t mind standing here. As we know, many teenagers get up earlier than we do and often feel tired. ”

He smiled at Jonathan and told him that he had arrived at his stop in sign language. After returning his smile and gesturing a “thank you”, Jonathan got off the bus using the crutches. American farmers are using an ancient tree from India to produce beans for making protein-rich foods and biofuels (生物燃料). The tree is called Pongamia (水黄皮).
Farmers in the southern state of Florida have found Pongamia trees grow well there too. They have now replaced citrus (柑橘) trees, which have long faced major struggles with disease.
Pongamia trees like hot temperatures and can survive in dry or rainy conditions. They also do not require special chemicals to kill insects and other life that might influence growth. Climate and disease have little effect on Pongamia trees. They are so strong that they can survive in the terrible situations even without much care.
Pongamia trees can produce small brown beans. The beans can be used in the production of several products, including cooking oil and protein-rich foods. The beans can also be used to produce a kind of biofuel, mostly for airplanes.
Unlike oranges and other citrus fruits, the beans do not require much effort to pick. Instead, they can be collected with a machine that shakes the trees to make them fall to the ground. A San Francisco-based company has invented a process that removes something from the beans that gives them a bad taste, allowing the beans to be used for food production.
Experts said that turning the wild trees into an agricultural success story was not easy. There are no books to read on the subject, and no one else has ever tried it. John Olson is a Florida farmer who replaced his citrus trees with plenty of Pongamia. He had little choice because, for the most part, the citrus trees died of disease, and the citrus industry has died in Florida, too. Olson said his citrus business made money throughout the 1980s and 1990s, although the farm was not large.
8. Which of the following fits Pongamia trees
A. They suffer from disease easily.
B. They grow slowly even with much care.
C. They require special chemicals to kill insects.
D. They can survive in the bad natural environment.
9. What does paragraph 4 mainly tell us about Pongamia beans
A. Their special taste. B. Their practical value.
C. Their production process. D. Their growing environment.
10. Which word best describes the way of collecting Pongamia beans
A. Stupid. B. Costly. C. Troublesome. D. Easy.
11. What made John Olson give up his citrus trees
A. The plant disease. B. The buying price.
C. The size of the farm. D. The request from the company.
D
New technologies can kill some old jobs, but they can also create new jobs. What is the balance between these two things A new research project led by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) economist David Autor and his workmates has developed a completely new method for studying the problem.
Since the last century, Autor and his workmates have searched about 35, 000 jobs listed in the US, followed how they appeared over time and found the connections between new technologies and their effects. That has allowed them, for the first time, to measure the effects of technology upon both job loss and job creation: How many jobs have been lost to machines, and how many jobs have been created through augmentation (增大) , in which technology creates new tasks.
You can think of automation (自动化) as a machine that takes a job, and augmentation as a technology that increases the variety and quality of human work. Over the years, there appears to have been a faster speed of automation, and a slower speed of augmentation. The study finds, from 1980 to the present, jobs like elevator operators are getting automated. But at the same time, more workers filled roles such as buyers and department heads, where technology has created a need for more employees.
Automation and augmentation often happen within the same industries. Within the same large firm, for example, there may be fewer machinists but more systems analysts. “AI is really different, ” Autor says. “It may substitute some expert knowledge or skills, but may add decision-making tasks. It takes a while to figure them out. For example, it took years for GPS to be in smartphones. ” All the measures show automation and its effects on displacing workers. As humans, we are surprised that we can improve augmentation.
12. What do Autor and his workmates mainly work on
A. The key to searching for jobs. B. The solutions to taking up new tasks.
C. The application of machines to industry. D. The effects of new technologies on jobs.
13. How does the author explain automation and augmentation in paragraph 3
A. By using real numbers. B. By guessing.
C. By telling historical stories. D. By comparing.
14. What does the underlined word “substitute” in the last paragraph probably mean
A. Take the place of. B. Depend on.
C. Take full responsibility for. D. Concentrate on.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Is AI the Most Important Technology
B. Are New Technologies Job Killers or Creators
C. Which Is Better, Automation or Augmentation
D. Who Are More Effective, Humans or Machines

When I was in junior high school, math was my greatest challenge. No matter how hard I tried, I always seemed to fall short. My test scores were often disappointing, and I felt my teenage life was full of confusion and frustration (挫败). However, everything changed, thanks to the great support of my teacher, Mr Green, and my classmates.
One day, after another poor test result, I stayed behind after class, feeling defeated. Mr Green noticed my sadness and came to me with a smile. “Don’t worry, Jack,” he said softly. “Everyone may find something difficult. The important thing is not to give up. Let’s work on this together.”
Mr Green started explaining each concept (概念) more patiently, breaking it down into simpler parts. He used real-life examples to make ideas easy to understand. Every time after class, he would come to my seat and ask me if I understood the lesson. His devotion and encouragement helped me a lot, and slowly, I began to see improvement.
My classmates also played a role in my progress. My best friend, Mike, was good at math. He offered to study with me during breaks. We would sit in the library, going over problems. He told me to face my mistakes bravely, and his positive attitude influenced me.
I would never forget the week before our final exams. I was struggling with a math problem. Despite Mr Green’s and Mike’s help, I couldn’t solve it. One afternoon, Mike suggested we turn it into a game. He created a set of flashcards (抽认卡) with different solutions. We took turns drawing cards and solving the problem as quickly as possible. Most importantly, we found joy in it. Of course, I made great progress in math.
The day of the final exam arrived. I took a deep breath and remembered all the hard work and support I had received. When the result was announced, I could hardly believe my eyes: I had scored the highest mark in my class in math. Later, we formed a group and invited more students to learn math together.

I hope the English club will be a place where we can freely express ourselves and learn from each other. I think the English club can organize various English debates, speech contests and drama performances, which will improve our confidence in using English. Besides, I suggest inviting native English speakers for guest lecturers if possible.
Thank you for considering my advice. I believe the English club will greatly benefit us students.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
