Kelly smiled. “Maybe not right now. But if you move these lines up...” she said, pointing her finger on Sophia’s paper.

The sounds of the Northern Lights have been a mystery to scientists for over a century. But now it seems that a researcher has figured out how auroras (极光) really make sounds.
“It has pretty much been confirmed all over the world,” historian Fiona Amery said. “ In Canada, Norway and Russia, they are all hearing very much the same sounds.”
“The auroras can occur hundreds of kilometers above the ground, which strengthens opinions that their sounds are just a false impression,” said Fiona. Many scientists argued that auroras were too far away to hear and that any sound would take several minutes to reach the ground, so it was impossible for them to change in time with the auroras.
However, other scientists were convinced that the Northern Lights really made noises. In the 1920s, Canadian astronomer Clarence Chant first suggested a mechanism by which they could occur: The motion of the aurora caused changes in the electrification of the atmosphere that created crackling sounds close to the ground. Almost 100 years later, Clarence’s suggestion seems close to what could be the true reason for the sounds.
In 2012, an expert named Unto Laine showed a recording of auroral sounds after years of monitoring auroras. In 2016, he announced the mechanism that makes the sounds: an inversion layer (逆温层) of cold air in the atmosphere that can form below an aurora and a short distance above the ground in calm weather.
Unto argues that visible changes in the aurora cause changes in the inversion layer, causing accumulated electricity to discharge as sparks (火花) that create sounds that can be heard. That explains how the sounds correspond with the aurora’s visible movements — they begin to happen in the inversion layer only about 75 meters above the observer.
28. What are the words Fiona said in Paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The existence of the sounds of the Northern Lights.
B The need to make full use of the Northern Lights.
C. The problems caused by the Northern Lights.
D. The cause of the Northern Lights.
29. What can we learn about Clarence’s suggestion in the 1920s
A. It matched a lot of old ideas. B. It was well recognized then.
C. It might be of great value. D. It was a total failure.
30. How does the author convey his idea in the text
A. By listing research numbers. B. By making comparisons.
C. By providing explanations. D. By giving examples.
31. Which is the most suitable title for the text
A. Can We Enjoy the Northern Lights
B. Do the Northern Lights Make Sounds
C. Why Should We Study the Northern Lights
D. How Do the Northern Lights Come into Being
D
September 2022 was apparently the month artificial intelligence essay anxiety boiled over n academia, after a user of an AI writing service claimed to be getting straight A's with essays written" using artificial intelligence. Most professors expressed concern. One wrote, “Grading something an Al wrote is an incredibly depressing waste of my life.”
As all this online depression was playing out, I asked my students, who were mostly majors in writing, to submit a 2,000-word proposal about a local issue. I asked them to rely on the AI as much as possible. After reviewing their 22 AI essays, I can tell you confidently that the technology just isn't there. My students used free accessible text generators online and put in a lot of effort. But, if I had believed these were genuine student essays, the very best would have earned somewhere around a C or C-minus. Many of the essays had obvious red flags for Al generation: outdated facts, quotes from prior university presidents presented as current presidents, fictional professors and named student organizations that don’t exist. At the same time, the students reported that using Al required far more time than simply writing their essays the old-fashioned way would have.
There has been a fair amount written about the supposed impressiveness of Al-generated text. There are even several high-profile Al-written articles, essays or even scientific papers or screenplays that showcase this impressiveness. In many of these cases, the “authors”have access to higher-quality language models than most students are currently able to use. But, more importantly, the published examples are generally the polished form of professional writers and editors. In contrast, many of my students’ Al-generated essays showed the common problems of student writing — uncertainty about the appropriate writing style, issues with organization and transitions, and inconsistent paragraphing. Obviously, producing a quality essay with AI requires having high writing skill and revising skill to produce appropriate outputs.
My experiment so tells me that a good assignment sheet is the best defense against AI essays. If your assignment is “Describe the reasons for the U. S. Civil War”, you are more likely to get AI or downloaded essay submissions. My assignment was a challenge because it asked students to address local issues of concern. There are just not enough relevant examples in the data the AI text generators are drawing from.
It has been just over five years since computer scientists declared, “We should stop training radiologist (放射科医生) now. Deep learning is going to do better than radiologists.” Well, we’re still training radiologists, and there’s no indication that deep learning is going to replace human doctors anytime soon. In much the same way, I strongly suspect full-on robot writing will always and forever be “just around the come”.
32. What does the author imply in Paragraph 3
A. Online text generators are far from reliable.
B. Genuine student essays deserve higher marks.
C. Students need to have better mastery of technology.
D. Revising applications decide the quality of AI essays.
33. In the author's opinion, what may discourage the use of AI text generators
A Standard criteria B. Strict regulations.
C. Clear instructions. D. Unique writing tasks.
34. What is the main purpose of the passage
A. To assess AI's influence on students' writing.
B. To discuss the threat of Al to the teaching of writing.
C. To appeal for the appropriate application of AI text generators.
D. To analyse the differences between genuine and Al-written essays.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分, 共10分)
根据短文内容, 从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。选项中有两项为多余选项。
“Is the glass half empty or half full ” This old English saying has long been used to differentiate a pessimist from an optimist. For most young people today, the answer is usually “half full”, because we have been taught that a positive attitude towards life is one of the primary keys to success. ____35____ Recent studies indicate that it all depends.
There is such a thing as too much positivity, also known as toxic positivity. It happens when someone remains in a happy and positive state and ignores any bad and negative emotions across all situations. ____36____ The death of a pet, a low score on a test, or a mountain of new homework should lead to emotions such as sadness, frustration and anger. If we hide these emotions just because we want to look optimistic in front of our friends and family, they can build up inside of us and end up erupting in unexpected ways. ____37____
____38____ Imagine having had a bad day, and wanting to talk about it with your friend. However, instead of listening to your problems and sympathizing with you, they simply told you to “be positive” and to “look on the bright side.” By saying such things, they give you the impression that your problems are being completely ignored. Moreover, since you don’t have the right “attitude,” your problems are ultimately your own fault.
That being said, nobody likes to be around depressed people. Just take everything as it comes and express how you really feel. ____39____. Given everything I have already said, my simple advice to you is to do that which gives you the best “attitude” in life, whatever for you that might be. Regardless of whether a glass is half-empty or half-full, it nonetheless still has space to fill.
A. However, is being negative necessarily a bad thing
B. This makes you human, and your true friends will always stick by you.
C. But actually it is normal for us to experience a range of emotions in a day.
D. And this is why I would want to write about staying positive in these difficult times.
E. Evidence suggests that overly positive people are at a higher risk of developing psychological problems.
F. Aside from the personal emotional impacts of toxic positivity, this attitude can also have a negative effect on the people around you.
G. But with everything that has been going on both at home and abroad, it’s probably felt to you like a continuous struggle to remain positive.
第三部分 书面表达(共两节, 32分)
第一节(共4小题;第40、41题各2分, 第42题3分, 第43题5分, 共12分)
阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
In order to fit in and make friends in a new school, Amanda observed how her classmates behaved and interacted with each other. Gradually, she perfectly adopted the mannerisms of the classmates around her, laughing at their jokes, nodding in agreement with their opinions, hiding herself into someone she thought others wanted her to be. We’ve all done these. This is social masking, the process of holding back or hiding our natural way of interacting with others so we can feel accepted.
In a world that often tells us to just be ourselves, you might wonder why many of us rely on social masking. “Social masking happens because we as a species want to be included,” says psychologist Dipti Tait. “It’s a tribal (群体的) thing of being together rather than being on our own. We all have certain masks to protect ourselves from exposure and difference.” While masking can help us deal with social situations, it can also come with negative consequences. Hiding our behaviours and interests constantly can lead to a strong feeling of separation, disconnection, and internal conflict. As a result, we may experience a heightened and increased possibility of developing depression as westruggle to understand social situations and signs that others take for granted.
Fortunately, a mask is not our own skin. We may feel extremely tired after social engagements and want to spend time alone in order to feel like ourselves. “The goal is to feel safe enough to remove the mask,” says Tait. “It’s crucial for individuals to receive acceptance and support for who they are, rather than feeling like they need to hide their true selves in order to fit in.”
40. What is social masking

A. Standard criteria B.

B. This makes you human and your true friends will always stick by you.
C. But actually, it is normal for us to experience a range of emotions in a day.

【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m excited to help with your Olympic special issue, especially for the “Athletic Icons” part. I think it’s great to include the Chinese Women’s Volleyball Team. They work together so well and never give up, showing what team spirit and hard work can achieve. Also, Panzhanle, a fantastic swimmer, should be mentioned. He’s won lots of gold medals and set world records, showing how dedication pays off. And then there’s Xie Yu, a talented young shooter who’s really precise. These athletes show different sides of Chinese sports, and their stories are truly inspiring.
