As any younger brother will tell you, having a big brother means a lot of walking in someone else’s shadow, especially when you have a brother who is a typical example of “cool”. For years I wanted to do everything my elder brother Tyson did, but no matter how hard I tried, I was always the neglected (被忽略的) one. My legs just weren’t made to run like his. I could never play football or basketball well.
I probably would have continued trying to keep up with him for the rest of my high school career, but when my family moved, everything changed. Tyson left for college, so I had to start at a new school all by myself. This new start gave me an opportunity to redefine myself and discover an entirely new meaning of “cool”.
I don’t know what made me decide to try some new activities at the new school, but one day I chanced to show up for an after-school meeting of the Science Olympiad team. I had always been fascinated with chemistry, biology, and math, but since those interests hadn’t fit Tyson’s definition of “cool”, I had never pursued them. On this day, for some reason, I did.
As we organized teams, prepared resources and practiced answering questions, I felt more connected than I ever had to any sports team. I didn’t feel as though I needed to keep up with anybody else; I was finally with peers (同伴) who understood me. It was so good to feel accepted for what I’m good at.
For the first time in my life, I actually felt cool. Now I know who I am! I’m Tyson’s little brother, but that’s only part of my identity. I’m a cool guy in my own way, too. I’m relieved to know that “cool” has a much broader definition than what I used to think.
30. What makes Tyson a typical example of “cool”
A. He has long legs and dresses fashionably. B. He pays little attention to others.
C. He always shadows his brother. D. He is really good at sports.
31. What made the author feel “cool”
A. Going to a new school all by himself. B. Accepting peers with the same interest.
C. Taking part in activities of a science team. D. Refusing to be identified as Tyson’s brother.
32. What can we learn from the story
A. Never judge a book by its cover. B. Find yourself and be yourself.
C. Life is full of possibilities. D. Skill is no burden.
C
Teens who have good, supportive relationships with their teachers enjoy better health as adults, according to a research.
“This research suggests that improving students’ relationships with teachers could have important, positive and long-lasting effects beyond just academic success,” said Jinho Kim, the author of the study. “It could also bring about important health benefits in the long run.”
Previous research has suggested that teens’ social relationships might be linked to health outcomes in adulthood—perhaps because poor relationships can lead to chronic stress which can raise a person’s risk of health problems over the lifespan, according to Kim. However, it is not clear whether the link between teen relationships and lifetime health is certainly cause and effect—it could be that other factors, such as different family backgrounds, might contribute to both relationship problems in adolescence and poor health in adulthood. Also, most research has focused on teens relationships with their peers, rather than on their relationships with teachers.
To explore those questions further, Kim analyzed data on nearly 20,000 participants from the Add Health study, a national study that followed participants for 13 years, from seventh grade into early adulthood. The participants included more than 3, 400 pairs of brothers and sisters. As teens, participants answered questions, like “How often have you had trouble getting along with other students ” “How much do you agree that friends care about you ” “How often have you had trouble getting along with your teachers ” and “How much do you agree that teachers care about you ” As adults, participants were asked about their physical and mental health. Researchers also took measures of physical health, such as blood pressure and BMI (体质指数).
Kim found that, as expected, participants who had reported better relationships with both their peers and teachers in middle school and high school also reported better physical and mental health in their mid-20s. However, when he controlled for family background by looking at pairs of brothers and sisters, only the link between good teacher relationships and adult health remained significant.
The results suggest that teacher relationships are even more important than previously realized and that schools should invest in training teachers on how to build warm and supportive relationships with their students, according to Kim.
33. According to paragraph 3, we can know that ________.
A. teen relationships with teachers were not studied before.
B. family background is the main factor in improving mental health.
C. teen relationship is not the only factor that affects the lifetime health.
D. relationship problems in adolescence can cause poor health in adulthood.
34. What is paragraph 4 mainly about
A. How the research was done B. What questions were explored
C. How physical health was measured D. What kind of participants were studied
35. According to Kim’s findings, we can infer that ________.
A. Good adult health depends on teens’ good teachers.
B. More attention should be paid to the students relationships with teachers.
C. The importance of student-teacher relationships was fully realized before.
D. Participants reported better relationships with their teachers and better health as adults.
36. Where does this text probably come from
A. A. family survey B. A medical report
C. A term paper D. A health magazine
D
A large body of research has been developed in recent years to explain many aspects of willpower. Most of the researchers exploring self-control do so with an obvious goal in mind: How can willpower be strengthened If willpower is truly a limited resource, as the research suggests, what can be done to make it stay strong
Avoiding temptation (诱惑) is an effective method for maintaining self-control, which is called the “out of sight, out of mind” principle. One recent study, for instance, found office workers less attracted to candy in the desk drawer than that on top of their desks, in plain sight.
The research suggesting that we possess a limited reservoir of self-control raises a troubling question. When we face too many temptations, are we to fail Not necessarily. Researchers don’t believe that one’s willpower is ever completely exhausted. Rather, people appear to hold some willpower in reserve, saved for future demands. The right motivation allows us to tap into those reserves, allowing us to carry on even when our self-control strength has been run down. High motivation might help overcome weakened willpower-at least to a point.
Willpower may also be made less vulnerable(脆弱)to being exhausted in the first place. Researchers who study self-control often describe it as being like a muscle that gets tired with heavy use. But there is another aspect to the muscle comparison, they say. While muscles become exhausted by exercise in the short term, they are strengthened by regular exercise in the long term. Similarly, regular practices of self-control may improve willpower strength.
The evidence from willpower-exhaustion studies also suggests that making a list of resolutions on New Year’s Eve is the worst possible approach. Being exhausted in one area can reduce willpower in other areas, so it makes more sense to focus on a single goal at a time. In other words, don’t try to quit smoking, adopt a healthy diet and start a new exercise plan at the same time. Taking goals one by one is a better approach. Once a good habit is in place, Baumeister says, you’ll no longer need to draw on your willpower to maintain the behavior. Eventually healthy habits will become routine, and won’t require making decisions at all.
37. From the studies in the passage we learn that .
A. people have unlimited self-control
B. high motivation ensures one’s success
C. willpower is hardly completely exhausted
D. too many temptations often lead to failure
38. The underlined phrase “tap into” in Paragraph 3 most probably means .
A. make use of B. run out of
C. build D. increase
39. The author compares self –control to muscles .
A. to prove the long-term effect of willpower
B. to show the significance of regular exercise
C. to argue that self-control can be easily used up
D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control
40. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer
A. “I will give up dessert and do exercise.”
B. “I will set three goals this new semester.”
C. “I will read an English novel every month.”
D. “I will keep myself from any temptation.”
第二节(共5小题; 每小题2分, 共10分)
Physicist and Nobel Prize winner Richard Feynman developed a clever learning method known as the Feynman Technique. It involves explaining what you're learning to others. By teaching what you’ve learned from memory, you engage in active recall. ____41____ It also ensures that you understand the topic, because you can only explain an idea if you truly understand it. The technique consists of four repeatable steps.
To begin, choose a concept or topic you wish to fully understand. ___42___ The more interested you are, the faster you’ll grasp it. Moreover, a personally interesting topic will keep you motivated and engaged.
___43___ Write notes and explain it in a way that makes sense to a five-year-old. If you’d rather avoid actually teaching someone, you can just teach it to an imaginary audience. But it works much better if you use a real person. They’ll be able to let you know when something isn’t clear.
While teaching you may discover gaps in your understanding. ____44____ Review your notes, reread books, or seek external help to ensure you have a complete understanding of the context before moving forward.
Now that you fully grasp the concept, test your understanding by trying to teach it to another person. This will help you identify any remaining areas of uncertainty you need to revisit.
The Feynman Technique is a great way for kids and grown-ups to learn. ____45____ You need to actively think about the problem instead of passively reading or listening to someone else. However, with great efforts in mastering this method, you’ll see your learning results improve quicker than ever before.
A. It is mentally demanding.
B. This helps the information stick in your mind better.
C. Teach it to a five-year-old, who would give you direct feedback.
D. Your curiosity about it will determine the pace of your learning.
E. Once you have chosen a topic, you can teach it to someone else.
F. Active engagement plays a key role in promoting deeper learning.
G. When this happens, refer back to the original material for the missing pieces.

A. people have unlimited self-control

B. to show the significance of regular exercise
C. to argue that self-control can be easily used up
D. to explain the benefits of practicing self-control
40. To develop a good habit, which of the following does the author prefer

【答案】Dear Jim,
I am sorry to hear that you have difficulty in learning Chinese. I hope that the unexpected failure will not let you down, for I have still been amazed by the excellent Chinese you spoke when we first met.
As we all know, language learning is never an easy task, but needs great efforts and patience. Personally, I think you’d better pay close attention to the formal use of Chinese words and expressions, which really counts. Meanwhile, you may as well read as many Chinese materials as you can. More importantly, you should learn from the mistakes that you have made. Anyway, you’ve already made great progress in your learning of Chinese.
I would be happy if my suggestions can be of use to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
