It seems that we just can’t get enough of roller coasters. Today we look at some top amusement parks and the roller coasters which have helped make them famous.
Holiday World
It is a family park that resists the exciting atmosphere of its competitors and instead offers a more relaxing and friendly experience. Rare in that it is privately owned and it has many features other parks can’t match. There is lots of entertainment for youngsters, and the park’s family-friendly policy offers free entry to the water park, reasonable food prices and unlimited soft drinks free of charge.
Lake Compounce
Lake Compounce, one of America’s more traditional parks, is a rare find indeed. As the oldest continuously operating amusement park in the US, it has been a popular family spot since 1846. Like many old-time parks, it witnessed the danger of being closed. Luckily, in 1977, a well-known company gave its revival with new rides appealing to many new fans.
Knott’s Berry Farm
As one of America’s favourite theme parks, Knott’s has something for everyone. For those seeking a breathtaking rush, try the roller coaster, GhostRider or the Xcelerator. GhostRider is the single largest attraction in amusement park history and one of the longest and tallest wooden roller coasters in the world. If you are after something less exciting, go visit the heart of Knott’s, Ghost Town, for a glance of life in the Wild West of the 1880s. With its cowboys, steam trains and historic buildings-many transported from mining towns-Ghost Town will let you relive a piece of the past.
Islands of Adventure
In the style of Walt Disney World, Islands of Adventure is divided into themed “lands”. Unlike the sugar-coated Magic Kingdom, however, IOA features attractions promising to set the heart racing. While the Spiderman is fantastic, you haven’t truly lived until you’ve experienced The Incredible Hulk’s wild and unique uphill launch. The effect is like being trapped inside an airplane that’s flying out of control.

B
Growing up, my grandparents bought a second home among a small forest in Arkansas and would bring me there every single summer. I would spend a lot of time outside there following my grandfather around while he did yard work. We would collect cool-looking rocks and refill the hummingbird feeders.
I always remember my grandparents calling me over to the window when a deer family was in the yard or a few hummingbirds were at the feeders so that I could watch them. I would explore around in the yard by myself sometimes to look for interesting rocks and if I was lucky I would find a turtle. If I did find a turtle, my grandfather would put it in the kiddy pool for me to observe for a few minutes. I was always amazed by these creatures. After I finished observing the turtle, my grandfather would pick it back up and return it to the bush I found it in. I would watch in amazement as it slowly stuck its legs out and crawled back under.
I always felt very at peace at my grandparents’ home. It was quiet and full of interesting natural things I never got to see in Illinois. They disturbed the land around them as little as possible and didn’t see it as nuisance (令人讨厌的东西), rather a beautiful view.
As Aldo Leopold, an American scientist, puts it, we should take the time to appreciate and observe the natural world around us. When we do this, we find it brings us happiness and has a great value beyond just that of resources. Conservation(n.保护) of the natural world is important because we are dependent upon it for life. We cannot worsen such a bountiful provider at such a rate in which it will never return to anything like what it once was. Our experiences with nature are what will drive us to reach this conclusion, if only everyone took the time to really involve themselves in it.
4. What does the writer mainly talk about in Paragraph 2
A. His interest in rocks and animals.
B. His connection with natural world.
C. His daily routine in summer vacation.
D. His close relationship with Grandparents.
5. What does “a bountiful provider” refer to in the last paragraph
A. Nature. B. Illinois. C. The small forest. D. Grandparents’ home.
6. What is the writer most likely to get across
A. Past experiences should be treasured.
B. Nature offers man a journey of discovery.
C. Quality time with family is of great value.
D. Into the nature, you will know how precious it is.
7. In which forum would you most likely find the text
A. Family Matters B. On the Road C. At One with Nature D. The Economist
C
A simple gesture can be formed into a child’s memory so quickly that it will cause the child to give a false answer to a question accompanied by that gesture. A new finding suggests that parents social workers, psychologists and lawyers should be careful with their hands as well as their words.
Gestures can be as informative as speech, but hand gestures are so common that we rarely notice we’re using them.
“While memories of both adults and children are easy to react to suggestions, those of children are known to be particularly influenced.” said lead researcher Sara Broaders of Northwestern University, “Kids are used to looking to adults to tell events for them and can be misled even if not intentionally.”
Previous research, for example, has shown that detail-loaded questions often cause false answers; when asked, say “Did you drink juice at the picnic ”, the child is likely to say “yes” even if no juice had been available. It is not that the child is consciously lying, but rather the detail is quickly formed into his or her memory.
To avoid this problem, social workers have long been advised to ask children only open-ended questions, such as “What did you have at the picnic ”. But an open-ended question paired with a gesture, briefly meaning a juice box, is treated like a detailed question. That is, children become likely to answer falsely.
And it isn’t just a few kids: 77% of children gave at least one piece of false information when a detail was suggested by an ordinary gesture. Gestures may also become more popular when talking with non-fluent language users, such as little kids. Broaders said, “As hand movements can impart meaning of unfamiliar words and phrases, it certainly seems reasonable that adults would gesture more with children.”
In general, Broaders advises parents and other adults to try to be aware of your hands when questioning a child about an event. Otherwise, you might be getting answers that don’t reflect what actually happened.
8. What do we know about gestures according to the text
A. They are rarely used by people.
B. They have not any function at all.
C. They have a certain effect on children.
D. They are often used by social workers.
9. Why are kids easy to be misled by gestures according to Sara Broaders
A. Children are easy to tell lies.
B. Their memories are affected easily.
C. These gestures are very attractive.
D. These gestures are used frequently.
10. What does the underlined word “impart” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Pass on. B. Tell apart. C. Appeal to. D. Break down.
11. What would be the best title for the text
A. Gestures—a Useful Way of Education
B. Gestures Can Mislead Children
C. Gestures Mean Adults’ Directions
D. Gestures Affect Children Too Much
D
Historians are often asked to examine the actions of our ancestors so we can repeat their wisdom and avoid their mistakes. But the present is just too different from the past. It is a waste of time to study Hannibal’s strategies in the Second Punic War so as to copy them in the Third World War. What worked well in cavalry battles will not necessarily be beneficial in cyber war. Studying history aims to loosen (松开) the hold of the past.
A young couple building a new home may ask the architect for a nice lawn (草坪) in the front yard. Why a lawn “Because lawns are beautiful,” the couple might explain. But why do they think so
The idea of growing a lawn at the entrance to private houses and public buildings was born in the castles of French and English aristocrats in the late Middle Ages. Well-kept lawns demanded land and a lot of work. In exchange, they produced nothing of value. The neat grass at the entrance to castles was a social position symbol nobody could pretend to have. Later the new parliaments (议会), supreme courts, presidential residences increasingly showed their power in row upon row of neat green grass. Humans came to identify lawns with political power, social position and economic wealth.
When you now come to plan your dream house, you might think twice about having a lawn in the front yard. You are of course still free to do it. But you are also free to shake off the cultural cargo given to you by the upper class. This is the best reason to learn history: not in order to guess the future, but to free yourself of the past and imagine different lives. Of course this is not total freedom — we cannot avoid being shaped by the past. But some freedom is better than none.
12. Why does the author mention Hannibal and cavalry battles in paragraph 1
A. To illustrate why future cyber war is difficult.
B. To highlight how important historical warfare is.
C. To show that past experience may not suit the present.
D. To explain what strategies historical figures developed.
13. What does the author believe is the real reason for growing a lawn
A. Its connection with power and wealth. B. Its high maintenance requirements.
C. Its origin from European castles. D. Its outstanding natural beauty.
14. What do the underlined words “cultural cargo” in the last paragraph refer to
A. Cultural mistakes. B. Cultural standards.
C. Historical buildings. D. Historical knowledge.
15. According to the author, studying history is to __________.
A. guess events in the future B. repeat wise decisions
C. understand cultural changes D. reduce the control from the past
第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
Loving Yourself
It might seem easier to love others than to love yourself, but it’s tough to build healthy relationships if you don’t love yourself first. ___16___. Read on to learn some strategies to love yourself.
Accept your flaws (瑕疵) as part of who you are.
Everything you’ve done and everywhere you’ve been is a part of who you are—you! ___17___. Instead, accept that they’re all parts of the same whole. When you love yourself, you love all of you because you wouldn’t have the good without the bad.
Focus on your effort rather than the result to avoid perfectionism.
If you expect yourself to be perfect all the time, you’ll never be pleased with anything you produce. ___18___. Focus on the effort you put into completing a task rather than looking for flaws in what you produced.
___19___.
It’s human nature to see negative things as bigger and more important than positive things, but this also does great damage to your self-respect. When you find yourself focusing on negative or less favorable events in your life, immediately try to name 3 to 5 things that you can be grateful for. This habit will help you feel good when bad things happen to you.
Reward (奖励) yourself for your achievement.
Rewarding yourself is the best part of practicing self-love. When you reward yourself, you’re telling yourself that you’re worthy of love and special treatment. Just think about how you might celebrate with a friend who’d just achieved something amazing, then go out and do that for yourself. Rewards don’t have to be expensive! ___20___.
A. Create self-love habits
B. This can lead to low happiness
C. Practice gratitude for good things
D. Self-love isn’t about fixing all the “bad” things about yourself

【答案】12. C 13. A 14. B 15. D

【答案】More and more people are beginning to use Wechat and some have even become addicted to it. However WeChat has both advantages and disadvantages.
WeChat really shortens the distance between people. No matter where we are we can easily get in touch with our friends. Besides, we can find friends to whom we can tell our secrets. However it also has disadvantages. First, some information offered on WeChat is false and it may result in people being cheated. Second, some people spend too much time on WeChat, greatly influencing their normal life.
As far as I am concerned, WeChat is convenient but we should use it properly.
