150 minutes of exercise a week: that’s how much we should all be doing. Does this mean that gyms are the best ways to guarantee our health Maybe, but they are not without their own health risks.
Health reports have suggested that some gym-goers’ hygiene (卫生) standards leave much to be desired. Bacteria that can cause serious illness, such as food poisoning, was found on the surface of gym equipment. Sweat and the increased temperature caused by exercise can help dangerous bacteria grow or the skin, which can be transferred to our clothing.
It might not just be the microbes (微生物) at a gym that could be poisonous. Unhealthy gym culture may be leading people to feel judged or threatened. It’s known that over half those surveyed felt anxious when going to the gym.
This feeling of being judged, and an overly competitive atmosphere, could create pressure to over-exercise. Over-exercise refers to overreaching and over-training. There are differences between them. The first is the result of a single instance of over-exercise, which leads to no more than muscle soreness, while the latter is more long-term and can have more serious outcomes. Over-training has been linked to injuries, exhaustion, reduced appetite and problems with sleep or weight gain.
When exercise becomes a compulsion it can also be dangerous for our mental health. Experts point out that feeling guilt at missed gym courses or trying to use exercise as a way to control our bodies could be signs that exercise dependency is a problem. This can be linked with a negative body image. So we don’t need to push ourselves so hard.
Of course, we shouldn’t forget that exercise can really help our physical and mental health, as long as we can maintain a healthy relationship with it.

A. Overreaching and over-training are the same.
B. Being judged is good for exercise motivation.
C. Overreaching can lead to long-term outcomes.
D. Over-training may result in undesirable effects.
11. Which statement would the author probably agree with
A. Take a balanced way to exercise. B. Avoid going to the gym together.
C. Exercise only when feeling anxious. D. Ignore the potential health risks of gym exercise.

A new analysis of dozens of arrowheads is helping researchers piece together a clearer portrait of the warriors who fought on Europe’s oldest battlefield 3250 years ago. The bronze arrowheads were recovered from the Tollense Valley in northeast Germany. Researchers first uncovered the site in 1996when an archaeologist spotted a bone sticking out of a bank of the Tollense River.
Since then, excavations (挖掘) have unearthed 300 metal finds and 12,500 bones belonging to about 150 individuals who fell in battle at the site in 1250 BC. Recovered weaponry has included swords, wooden clubs and lots of arrowheads. No direct evidence of an earlier battle of this scale has ever been discovered, which is why Tollense Valley is considered the site of Europe’s oldest battle, according to researchers who have studied the area since 2007.
Studies of the bones have thrown new light on the men — all young, strong and able-bodied warriors, some with healed wounds from previous skirmishes (战斗). But details on why they fought in such a bloody battle have long confused researchers.
There are no written accounts describing the battle, so as teams of archaeologists have unearthed more finds from the valley, they have used the well-preserved remains and weapons to try to piece together the story behind the ancient battle scene.
Now, a team of researchers studying arrowheads used in the battle has discovered evidence that it included local groups as well as an army from the south. These findings suggest the fight was the earliest example of interregional conflict in Europe — and raise new questions about the state of the organized, armed violence thousands of years ago.
“The arrowheads are a kind of ‘smoking gun’,” said lead study author Leif Inselmann. “Just like the murder weapon in a mystery, they give us a clue about the cause, the fighters of the Tollense Valley battle and where they came from.”
12. What makes the Tollense Valley unique among ancient battle sites in Europe
A. It is the first site to have such a large number of arrowheads.
B. It is considered the location of Europe’s oldest known battle.
C. It is the only site where swords and wooden clubs were found.
D. It has the most well-preserved remains of warriors from 1250 BC.
13. What have long puzzled researchers about the Tollense Valley battle
A. The exact date of the battle. B. The location of the battlefield.
C. The reasons behind the conflict. D. The number of the warriors in the battle.
14. Why does Leif Inselmann regard the arrowheads as “smoking gun”
A. They are the most valuable artifacts found at the site.
B. They reveal the identities of the warriors who fought.
C. They are the direct evidence of the battle’s occurrence.
D. They provide clues to the cause and origin of the fighters.
15. What can be inferred from this excavation
A. The warriors came from the same area or community.
B. It contributes additional details to the Europe’s oldest battle.
C. Ancient warriors’ personal lives and beliefs are clearly described.
D. It offers an entire and definitive account of Europe’s oldest battle.

Signs You’re Being Lied To
Is there a liar in the room Lies occur frequently, but nobody wants to be caught. Here are some signs to help you spot a liar.
Listen to the voices. Pay attention to voice changes like change in pitch or cracking. ___16___ A person’s voice pitch tends to be a bit higher when lying than when telling the truth. It doesn’t mean they’re lying for sure, but there’s a greater possibility.
Watch those words. ___17___ Researchers say they can sniff out lies in emails and other written materials by studying the frequency and kinds of words used. Liars tend to use fewer exclusive words such as but, or and except. They also tend to use more negative-emotion words such as ashamed, upset and embarrassed. These are the words that send up red flags.
___18___ Even though a high percentage of communication is thought to be non-verbal (非语言的), no single part of the body reveals the whole story when it comes to lying. ___19___ Hand gestures and arm and leg movements may occur with less frequency or intensity. The person becomes more focused on telling the lie, so they get quieter in their body.
Ask questions quickly. If you suspect you’re being cheated, try asking questions quickly one after the other. The initial lie is easy, but the follow-up lie is more difficult. When you continue to ask questions and put people on the spot, it gets harder to maintain the lie.
In conclusion, identifying lies is a complex process. ___20___ Now that you know how to tell if someone is lying, pay attention to those signs.
A. Keep the body active.
B. Get better at body language.
C. They may well indicate cheat.
D. It’s time to rebuild trust in a relationship.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
I was born with a rare disease. My parents gave me my first toolbox when I was five years old, because they thought playing with Lego (乐高) could help improve my flexibility. Although it was difficult to put all the pieces together, I made my first Lego car. As I grew older, I became interested in Lego Technic, which allowed me to create more complicated things. By the age of nine, I had made my first prosthetic arm (义肢) using Lego Technic — a simple box that perfectly suited my right arm.
This early creation drove me for further exploration. Years later, I developed another prosthetic arm called the MK-I. It had fingers, a motor, a sensor that felt pressure, a moving elbow, and a grabber to pick up things.
Before constructing it, I had already decided against traditional prosthetics. Not because they were ineffective, but because playing with Lego did significantly improve my flexibility, helping me adapt to my condition. Besides, a more disappointing reason was that traditional prosthetics were too expensive. My parents and I had found one a few years earlier, only to be discouraged by the costly price. So, I concluded that I might not need to buy one because I was trying to make a better one. Moreover, the pure joy of creating prosthetics with Lego Technic kept me going on.
As the years passed, my creations changed from MK-I to the more advanced and comfortable MK-V. It featured a control unit that could send and receive orders from sensors on the arm to the motors, with cables that work like muscles.
One day, a couple with their eight-year-old son, who lost both arms in an accident, came to me after learning about my creations. Short of money, they couldn’t afford well-functioning prosthetics. “Tom,” the father sincerely asked, “we were wondering if you could help build a set of prosthetics for our son.”

1. 续写词数应为150个左右;

When exercise becomes a compulsion, it can also be dangerous for our mental health. Experts point out that feeling guilt at missed gym courses or trying to use exercise as a way to control our bodies could be signs that exercise dependency is a problem. This can be linked with a negative body image. So we don’t need to push ourselves so hard.

A new analysis of dozens of arrowheads is helping researchers piece together a clearer portrait of the warriors who fought on Europe’s oldest battlefield 3,250 years ago.

【答案】Dear Mr. Smith,
I am writing to seek your advice on my project. Having observed how inspirational figures can significantly shape young people’s values and behaviors, I decide to explore their influence on students’ growth.
The figure I intend to focus on is Stephen Curry, the superstar point guard of the Golden State Warriors. When he was young, although he could only train on the rough court and was doubted by many people because of his poor body condition, he carried on practising to sharpen his skills. Therefore, Curry’s story is a typical example of hard work, devotion, and perseverance.
What do you think of it I would greatly appreciate your advice on this project.
Best regards,
Li Hua

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】I knew it would be a challenging and demanding task, but I responded with a “yes”. The boy raised his head with his once lifeless eyes now shining with a spark of hope. Smiling warmly at him, I immediately set out to do the task. Considering the factors like the family’s financial situation, his physical condition and personal interests, I carefully selected the Lego pieces that were suitable for him. Gradually, the boy’s unique prosthetics took shape. It’s time for them to fulfill their intended purpose.
I rushed to the boy’s home and put the prosthetics on him. Holding breath, we waited anxiously for the result—they worked! The room was filled with cheers! The boy, with tears of happiness in his eyes, rushed to his parents to embrace them in the biggest hug he hadn’t been able to give for years. The scene was truly inspiring. Never had I imagined that my creations, originating purely from amusement, would someday make such a significant difference. It is on that day that I made up my mind to devote myself to making a lifelong impact on the field of prosthetic innovation.
