15-year-old Jacob Grosberg walked the streets of down town on Saturday to try and help people dealing with health problems, especially mental issues. The Toronto teenager carried bags full of donated clothes and hygiene (卫生) products for people living on the streets or in shelters.
Grosberg’s father once suffered a lot from depression and mental illness. After his death, Grosberg decided he wanted to help others dealing with the same problem. His solution was the Conan Fund, so-called after his father’s high school nickname for his strength and popularity. According to the fund’s website, the money raised is donated to charities, hospitals and organizations to make a chance and improve resources.
It didn’t take long for people living in the shelter on Wellington Street in Liberty Village to come out to receive what Grosberg was offering. From bags of socks, to hats, gloves, jeans and winter jackets, the people were excited and appreciative of the generosity. Martuia Archibald, 30, had a huge smile on her face as she put on a winter jacket and turned up the collar. She didn’t have a winter jacket until Grosberg arrived, and was touched by the gesture. “It means that there are people out there that still consider that I need warm clothing as well,” she said.
Grosberg’s mother said her son’s spirit and kindness motivated her. “He inspires me,” she said. “He shows me the way to move forward after his father is gone. He shows me the way to turn something terrible into something really positive.”
That’s exactly what Grosberg is trying to achieve. “I think that doing this is not only inspiring more changes in myself, but hopefully can inspire a lot of others to do the exact same thing I’m doing,” Grosberg said.
4. What inspired Grosberg to set up the Conan Fund

6. What can be inferred about Grosberg’s mother
A. She is a very optimistic person. B. She considers her son an inspiration.
C. She co-founded the Conan Fund. D. She is always ready to lend a helping hand.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text
A. Inspiring People Around Oneself
B. Seeing the Positive Side of Everything
C. Becoming a Teenager with Great Confidence
D. Turning a Struggle into a Charitable Movement

“Why birds sing is relatively well-understood,” says Ins Adam, a behavioral scientist at the University of Southern Denmark. The big question for her was: Why do birds sing so frequently
Previous research suggests that constant singing uses a lot of energy and exposes birds to others, making them vulnerable by revealing their location and territory, which is highly dangerous. However, in a new study published in the journal Nature Communications, Adam and her colleagues offer a new explanation for this risky behavior. They suggest that songbirds may need to exercise their vocal (发声的) muscles to maintain top performance in their songs.
These findings may also be relevant to human voices. Adam points out that if we apply these bird results to humans, any period of not speaking might lead to a loss in vocal performance. This insight suggests that songbirds could one day help us improve how we train and restore our own voices.
Adam assumed the muscles that produce birdsong required daily exercise, so she designed an experiment on zebra finches — small Australian songbirds. Light is what attracts the birds to sing, so she prevented them from singing for a week by keeping them in the dark almost around the clock. The only exceptions were a few half-hour periods each day when the lights were turned on so the birds could eat and drink.
After a week, the birds’ singing muscles lost half their strength. Adam then tested whether this muscle loss affected the quality of the birds’ songs. Although she couldn’t hear any difference when comparing a male’s song before and after the period of darkness, a group of female birds showed a clear preference: six out of nine preferred the song from a male who had been exercising his singing muscles daily.
“This study highlights that achieving mastery in any skill requires a lot of practice,” says Ana Amador, a scientist at the University of Buenos Aires who was not involved in the research.
8. Which of the following best explains “vulnerable” underlined in paragraph 2
A. Rarely found. B. Easily targeted.
C. Directly poisoned. D. Actively defended.
9. Why are human voices mentioned in the text
A. To illustrate Adam’s idea by comparison.
B. To assess Adam’s previous work accurately.
C. To show the significance of studying birdsong.
D. To stress the distinction between human voices and birdsong.
10. What is the basis for Adam’s experiment
A. Birds need little practice for better singing.
B. Light is a contributory factor in birds’ singing.
C. Weakening muscles result in less attractive songs.
D. Male birds produce songs to attract female birds.
11. What’s the best title for the text
A. Singing Invites Trouble to Birds
B. Songbirds Help Restore Human Voices
C. Vocal Muscles: the Secret of Birds’ Singing
D. Daily Singing: Essential for Birds’ Vocal Muscle Fitness

Most online fraud(诈骗) involves identity theft Passwords help. But many can be guessed. Newer phones, tablets, laptops and desktop computers often have strengthened security with fingerprint and facial recognition. But these can be imitated. That is why a new approach, behavioural biometrics(行为生物识别) is gaining ground.
It relies on the wealth of measurements made by today’s devices. These include data from sensors that reveal how people hold their phones when using them, how they carry them and even the way they walk. Touchscreens, keyboards and mice can be monitored(监测) to show the distinctive ways in which someone’s fingers and hands move. These features can then be used to determine whether someone attempting to make a deal is likely to be the device’s habitual user.
“Behavioural biometrics make it possible to identify an individual’s unique motion fingerprint”, says John Whaley, head of Unifyid, a firm in Silicon Valley that is involved in the field. When coupled with information about a user’s finger pressure and speed on the touchscreen, as well as a device’s regular places of use—as revealed by its GPS unit—that user’s identity can be pretty well determined.
Used wisely, behavioural biometrics could be a great benefit. In fact, Unifyid and an unnamed car company are even developing a system that unlocks the doors of a vehicle once the pace of the driver, as measured by his phone, is recognized. Used unwisely, however, the system would become yet another electronic spy on people’s privacy, permitting complete strangers to monitor your every action, from the moment you reach for your phone in the morning, to when you throw it on the floor at night.
12. What is behavioural biometrics for
A. To identify network crime B. To ensure network security.
C. To track online fraud. D. To gather online data.
13. How does behavioural biometrics work
A. By limiting and discovering users’ passwords.
B. By spotting and revealing where a device is regularly used.
C. By offering and analyzing users’ facial features.
D. By monitoring and comparing how users interact with devices.
14. What’s the author’s attitude towards behavioural biometrics
A. Doubtful. B. Concerned C. Favorable. D. Objective.
15. From which section of a magazine can this passage possibly be taken
A. Science and technology. B. Health and wealth.
C. Finance and economics D. Books and arts

I grew up in a poor family with six brothers, three sisters, my father and mother. We had little money and few goods, but plenty of love and attention. I was happy and energetic. I understood that no matter how poor a person was, he could still afford a dream.
My dream was athletics. By the time I was sixteen, I could throw a ninety-mile-per-hour fastball and hit anything moving on the football field. And I was so lucky that my high-school coach was Ollie Jarvis, who not only believed in me, but often told me “Dream is priceless”. However, when I was about to get off the ground, one particular incident happened, which almost ruined my long-held dream.
It was the summer holiday in senior two and a friend recommended me for a summer job. I was offered $ 12.25 per pared with the average $3.5, that was a big sum. I was so excited, because this meant a chance for money in my pocket, certainly money for a new bike and new clothes, and the start of savings for a house for my mother. The prospect(前景)of the job was inviting, and I wanted to jump at the opportunity.
Then I realized I would have to give up summer baseball training to handle the work schedule. I didn't dare to tell my coach, I thought of the advice my mother often gave me when I lacked courage, "If you make your bed, you have to lie in it." I decided to talk to my coach in person. After all, my dream of buying my mom a house and having money in my pocket was worth facing his disappointment to me.

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150字左右。
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
I gathered my courage and knocked at his door.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
That question reminded me of what my coach used to say.

【答案】 I gathered my courage and knocked at his door. As expected, his face turned purple immediately. He glared at me like a bull. "You have your whole life to work," he said, “but your playing days are limited. You can't afford to waste them." I stood before him with my head down. “How much will you be paid, son ” He demanded. "$12.25 per hour.” “Well," he shrugged. “Is $12.25 an hour the price of a dream ”
That question reminded me of what my coach used to say. Yes, dream is priceless. It's stupid to earn pocket money at the expense of my dream. I held my head high and said firmly, “Sorry, Mr. Jarvis. I know what to do next." My coach smiled with great satisfaction. That summer I dedicated myself to baseball training. And one year later, I obtained a baseball scholarship to the University. I knew I would soon buy my mum a house. Thankfully, I made a right choice. Without Mr. Jarvis, I would never know I could afford a dream.
