三、阅读理解
Over a million people around the world lose their lives to car accidents(事故)each year. While nearly all of these deaths are the consequence of human mistakes, there are no good ways to reduce the number of deaths. Surely one of the best plans is driverless technology.
Driverless cars are no longer an idea of the future. With the technology for the driverless car already developed for quite a long time, and some important inventions already seen in some cars, the driverless car could soon be with us.
This is wonderful because driverless technology is expected to reduce the number of road deaths. A research group in the United Kingdom says that driverless cars will lead to 2,500 fewer road deaths before 2030.
How are driverless cars safer Firstly, driverless cars can help manage traffic. By using communication technologies to “talk” to each other, driverless cars find the best roads. Information such as distance(距离)between cars, traffic and time is sent to the cars. This means fewer chances of these cars running into each other. Secondly, the use of driverless cars means fewer accidents will happen because of human mistakes. For example, accidents caused by little sleep or drunk driving will be avoided. Finally, the driverless technology of the future, is expected to be more reliable(可靠)than a human driver.
If lives can be saved by driverless cars, let’s hope these cars will be on our roads very soon.

Paper is one of the most important products ever invented by man. The invention of paper meant that more people could be educated because more books could be printed. Paper provided an important way to spread information.
According to Chinese written historical records, paper was made in about AD 105 by Cai Lun, an official during the Han Dynasty. He took the inner bark of a tree and bamboo, mixed them with water, and pounded them with a wooden tool. He then put this mixture onto a piece of cloth and let the water through, leaving only the fibers (纤维) on the cloth. After it dried, Cai Lun discovered that he had created a good writing thing—paper. It was easy to make and take.
Chinese papermaking was introduced to Korea and Vietnam and later to Japan at the beginning of the 3rd century. It was a valued export (出口) in Silk Road trading, but the papermaking process was kept secret.
During the Tang Dynasty and the Song Dynasty, different kinds of paper were developed including bamboo paper and xuan paper.
By the end of the 7th century, the papermaking process reached India, Nepal, Pakistan and Bangladesh. In about AD 751 after an important war, the secret of papermaking was gotten from two Chinese prisoners (囚犯) caught by the enemies. The invention was then spread to Europe.

A lot of people think that wind power is new but that’s not true. For thousands of years, people have used wind to sail (航行) boats and move water. We still do those things today, but these days we mainly use wind power to make electricity.
Wind power is a very popular source of energy. Most people think we should use it more and more. First of all, it’s clean. It doesn’t pollute the environment at all. Second, we can use wind power forever. After all, we will always have wind. Also, wind power is cheap and it’s getting even cheaper.
A lot of people don’t understand wind power very well. They believe there are problems with wind power, but many of those problems are not real. For example, some people say windmills (风车) are dangerous for birds. They used to be true, but it isn’t true any more. Old windmills killed birds because they spun (旋转) very fast. New windmills spin slowly, so they aren’t dangerous for birds.
However, there are real problems with windmills. One problem is that many people think windmills are very ugly. This is a problem for people, because windmills are often in very pretty areas. Also, wind doesn’t blow all the time, so we can’t use wind power all the time. Finally, windmills are noisy.
Although there are several problems, wind power is becoming more and more common. Right now, more than 80 countries use wind power, About 2.5 percent of the world’s power comes from the wind.

Robot fools humans
The idea that robots could one day be our friends has been around for a long time but until now they have always seemed more machine than person. A new study by a researcher at the Italian Institute of Technology has found that in fact it’s possible for robots to fool us here and there, they are just less perfect than human. Inspired by the Turing Test, Agnieszka Wykowska came up with an experiment using a child-sized human-like robot called iCub. Sitting in front of a screen, the people in the test were asked to press a button when a green box appeared on the screen, however, iCub only responded to red boxes Wykowska programmed the robot to take different lengths of time to respond, just like a person would. Afterwards, the humans were asked to judge whether they had been competing with a machine or a person according to the time of the buttions being pressed—and they couldn’t tell. Wykowska believes that making robots have more human responses is the key to making better robots and creating more trust between humans and robots.
In another study with iCub, the robot and a human watched special videos of animals. In the first set of tests, iCub greeted the person, asked for his name and kept eye contact with its camera “eyes”. It made comments about the videos, laughed and showed emotions (情感). In the second experiment, however, iCub did not communicate with human and just made machine-like noises. The researchers found that people believe that the more human iCub is, the more it has its own thoughts and desires. The team now wants to know if people can communicate with robots that do not look human but that still show human-like actions. The researchers plan to repeat the experiments, using robots of different shapes and sizes, to see how people give their responses.

A.the green boxes people used B.the time of the button being pressed

A.watch special videos of humans B.keep eye contact with its camera “eyes”
C.greet the person and ask for his name D.make comments and show emotions
