November is often overlooked as December approaches, but it’s an ideal time to arrange an escape from the dull skies of northern Europe. Here’s our pick of the best holiday destinations in November.
Vatnaj kull, Iceland
Iceland’s name becomes increasingly accurate in November, as sub- zero temperatures arrive more frequently. This is the best time for tourists to enter into the heavenly world of ice caves — more accurately, glacier caves — as these changing holes need to be safely frozen before they can be explored.
Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Lanzarote provides an amazing break in November. The first week aside, there are few school holidays this month — a bonus for peace- seekers. With gardens designed by the famous Lanzarote architect César Manrique, Meliá Salinas is a big- name resort (度假胜地) with local style, set between two beaches.
Jackson Hole, Wyoming
During the winter, Jackson Hole is a wonderland of snow skiing, snowmobiling and ice- skating. If you’re looking for some fast- paced family fun, try the Alpine Slide, where you can slide down 2,500 feet of Snow King Mountain in a bobsled (雪车). No matter when you’re planning your trip, you should book early.
Vancouver Island, Canada
Part of British Columbia, Vancouver Island was originally the land of the Kwakwaka’ wakw, Nuu- chah- nulth and Coast Salish peoples. Today, the island is valuing the original cultures more and more. Planning means you can take your time seeking out activities that celebrate native people’s culture. Remember that you must order the ferries (渡船)from the mainland ahead of time.
1. Where would tourists preferring quiet destinations like to go
A. Vatnaj kull. B. Lanzarote.
C. Jackson Hole. D. Vancouver Island.
2. What do the last two destinations have in common
A. They need reservations. B. They have colourful cultures.
C. They are famous for snow sports. D. They are suitable for all the family.
3. Where is the text most probably taken from
A. A coursebook. B. A survey report.

For many of us, the closest we get to wild animals is at a zoo. These places let us see amazing animals-from big cats to tiny lizards-and what they are like. It’s an enjoyable and educational experience for us, but is it the best environment for these animals
Long ago, people could only see wild animals as stuffed dead exhibits in a museum. Later on, live animals were captured by explorers, brought home and put on show to the public in menageries (野生动物园), Animal welfare was not a priority. Modern zoos, however, have transformed the living environments for animals, making bigger enclosures, removing bars, and — to some extent — copying their natural habitats.
Some people have questioned the cruelty of keeping animals captive (养的) for entertainment, but zoos are keen to show that they help wildlife by educating us about conservation. In the UK, the introduction of The Zoo Licensing Act 1981 also required zoos to educate the public. Well-managed zoos are now also involved in supporting and funding protection programmes.
Probably the biggest claim from zoos today is that they help protect species in the wild that are under threat due to climate change. Robert Young, Chair in Wildlife Conservation at Salford University said:”There are quite a lot of different species around the planet which we wouldn’t have today if it wasn’t for zoos.” Some zoos have captive breeding programs which help to preserve the future of species that would otherwise face extinction. Actor Leonardo DiCaprio recently praised Chester Zoo in the LK for its conservation work. It brought “a rare fish species back from the dead” after breeding and releasing a school of golden skiffia fish back into their native river.
While the debate about having zoos continues, new opportunities to meet wildlife are being explored, like virtual reality. Jon Coe, a zoo designer, told the BBC: “Taking a walk through a herd of elephants in the Serengeti, I think, is going to be possible pretty soon.”
4. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. The origins of menageries. B. The benefits of modern zoos.
C. The problems with animal captivity. D. The historical shift in treating wild animals.
5. Why does the author mention the Zoo Licensing Actof1981
A To emphasize the educational role of zoos.
B. To explain why zoos began to help wildlife
C. To introduce methods of conserving wildlife.
D. To state the need for stricter regulations of zoos.
6. What’s Robert Young’s attitude toward having zoos
A. Critical. B. Neutral. C. Doubtful. D. Supportive.
7. What conservation achievement was attributed to Chester Zoo by actor Leonardo DiCaprio
A. Exploring ways for humans to meet wildlife.
B. Raising funds for captive breeding programs
C. Reviving and releasing a rare fish species.
D. Involving celebrities in raising wildlife awareness.

From the swinging rhythms of the 1950s to the autotuned hooks of today, pop music has undergone a remarkable transformation. But what exactly has changed, and how can we measure it
Researchers identify two major “melodic (旋律的) revolutions” in pop music history: one in 1975 and another in 2000. These turning points mark significant shifts in the structure and complexity of hit melodies. Interestingly, these musical milestones aren’t perfectly in line with the revolutions in harmony and tone color, suggesting that different aspects of music may evolve at different rates.
During these revolutions, melodies have generally become simpler, both in terms of pitch (音高) and rhythm. Modern pop hits tend to use a smaller range of notes and simpler rhythmic patterns compared to those from the 1950s and 60s. At the same time, there was a dramatic increase in “note density” — the number of notes squeezed into each second of music. This means that while today’s pop melodies might be simpler in structure, they’re often delivered more rapidly, creating a sense of energy and urgency that wasn’t as common in earlier decades.
There are several interesting possibilities for what is happening. One theory suggests that as other aspects of music production — like complex electronic beats and richly layered instrumentation — have become more sophisticated, melodies have had to simplify to maintain a balance. Another explanation points to the changing landscape of music consumption. In an era of streaming and social media, where listeners can skip to the next song in seconds, there may be more pressure to create tunes that grab attention instantly. This could favor simpler, more repetitive melodies that are easy to remember and sing along to.
Relationships between different musical features have also become stronger in recent years. For example, in post-2000 pop hits, melodies with more notes per second tend to be less complex in terms of pitch variety. This suggests that modern pop songwriting may be following stricter patterns than in the past.
8. What change has taken place in pop music over the years
A. Denser notes. B. Bigger range of pitch.
C More complex rhythms. D. More diverse tone colors.
9. Which of the following may contribute to the revolution of pop music
A. The difficulty in creating catchier tunes.
B. The conventional patterns to enjoy music.
C The convenience of switching between songs.
D. The need to balance increasingly intense beats.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A Pop songwriting might be more flexible in the past.
B. Modern pop music prioritizes simplicity in melody.
C. Post-2000 pop hits feature complexity in pitch variety.
D. Relationships between musical elements are invariable.
11. What’s the purpose of the text
A. To prove a viewpoint. B. To remove some doubts.
C. To illustrate a principle. D. To analyze a phenomenon.

There have been concerns that video games might damage our mental and physical well-being. Recently, more researches have revealed these worries are largely unfounded. Nevertheless, there exists a deep-seated idea that playing them rots your brain — it’s easy to view them as an unproductive waste of time. But in reality, is the opposite the case
For years, “brain-training” games and apps have been convinced to be an effective way to boost our cognitive (认知的) abilities or intelligence, as it’s thought that by playing a series of quickfire puzzles focusing on things like memory or spatial awareness, over time our abilities in these areas will improve; theoretically, so will our general intelligence.
From a research viewpoint, the key lies in whether playing these sorts of games results in “transfer” effects — “near” and “far” transfer effects: near effects relate to whether playing one memory game results in improvements in other memory games, whereas far effects relate to whether playing that game results in a general improvement in cognitive abilities. Some studies have pointed out brain-training games show weak near effects. As for far effects, there’s no convincing evidence this happens.
However, things get interesting when brain-training games are compared with video games. In a 2015 study comparing the brain-training game SmartP with the video game Mazix, researchers found SmartP players didn’t show boosts in problem-solving and spatial skills, but Mazix players did.
More recently, in 2020, researchers in Sweden studied data from some 9,000 children and found that kids aged 9 or 10 who played video games for above-average amounts of time didn’t show any differences in intelligence compared with those playing less. Two years later, they discovered that by 12, the kids playing video games had 2.5 more IQ points than average.
Why video games result in improvements in cognitive abilities over more targeted games isn’t clear. One argument is to do with the amount of time invested: whereas brain-training apps tend to deliver mini-games over a short time, video games have players engaged and require sustained levels of attention and problem-solving. Despite some promising findings, it’s currently unsafe to say that video games make us smarter. Meanwhile, video games can offer both advantages and risks, so it’s important to be cautious and avoid making quick judgments.
12. What do people usually think of brain-training games
A. They are a waste of time. B. They can improve our intelligence.
C. They are easily accessible. D. They may enhance our concentration.
13. What do we know about Mazix players
A. They demonstrated signs of far effects.
B. They had a great talent for video games.
C. They exhibited boosts in gaming skills.
D. They proved the importance of near effects.
14. What does the study in 2020 reveal
A. The limited effects of age on IQ points.
B. The negative impacts of video games.
C. The advantages of playing more games.
D. The benefits of video games over time.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Do Brain-training Games Really Work
B. Video Games or Brain-training Games
C. Could Video Games Make Us Smarter
D. Should We Stop Playing Video Games

Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. With the autumn weather fast approaching, it’s the perfect time of year to jet off and get away from hustles and bustles. ____16____ Here are some top tips to make sure you’re not caught out on your break abroad.
Treat yourself to a power bank
The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. ____17____ So you’re going to want some extra support so you don’t end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. That’s why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world.
Enable Data roaming (漫游)
____18____ The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad. Make sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is. In many countries it is straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance. ____19____ If you’ve got a newer phone, it will probably support “eSIM” — where you can simply use an app like Holafly or Airalo while connected to wifi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily.
Download offline application software
And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you’ll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. ____20____ Then you get a clear translation. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage!
A. What good is a phone without Internet access
B. You simply wave your phone at the scanner instead.
C. In fact, you may not even need a physical card anymore.
D. Why do you need to get your phone ready to be connected
E. But when you’re away from home, you’re probably using it so much more.
F. You can typically just wave the camera of your phone over pretty much anything.
G. But before leaving for the airport, ensure your phone is ready for the journey ahead!

On Monday morning I wore my favourite dress to school for the first time since I had started at Edison Middle School. I said good morning to our headmaster, Mr. Jordan, at the school entrance. With a genuine smile that reached his eyes, he greeted me by name, inquiring about my weekend and showing a sincere interest in my day ahead.
That was really comforting! It was the day of the poetry festival. and I was excited. At my old school, I had won the poetry award every year. I’m horrible at sports, and too shy to be popular—but do write good poetry, although I never told anyone here about it yet.
The poem I wrote for the Edison Festival was about my dad. I wished I would surprise my classmates and Mrs. Baker, my English teacher.
When Mrs. Baker called on me, I was so nervous that I had to swallow about ten times before I could speak. But once I started, I didn’t even bother to look at my paper. I’d spent so much time perfecting the rhymes that I knew the poem by heart.
I had just started the third line when I noticed Mrs. Baker’s expression change. She looked at me with a mixture of appreciation and disbelief. I stopped in the middle of a word and waited for her to say something.
“Linda, you are supposed to be reading a poem you made up yourself, not reciting something you learned. That is called plagiarism(剽窃)!”
“Oh, but it’s an original one. I did make it up, it’s about my dad.” I heard a “Yeah, right!” from somewhere behind me, and someone else laughed. I opened my mouth to explain, but no words came out.
“Perhaps you could step out and gather your thoughts, and when you feel ready, we can discuss this with a clear mind,” said Mrs. Baker.
I’d been standing outside for 5 minutes when Mr. Jordan came over to ask me what happened.

C. More complex rhythms. D. More diverse tone colors.
9. Which of the following may contribute to the revolution of pop music
A. The difficulty in creating catchier tunes.
B. The conventional patterns to enjoy music.
C. The convenience of switching between songs.
D. The need to balance increasingly intense beats.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph
A. Pop songwriting might be more flexible in the past.

A. Do Brain-training Games Really Work
B Video Games or Brain-training Games

Yours,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Principal,
I hope this letter finds you well. As we observe World Mental Health Day on October 10th, I would like to bring to your attention the critical issue of student mental health. In today’s fast-paced and competitive environment, maintaining good mental health is essential for our overall well-being and academic success.
To support our mental health, I suggest implementing regular mental health awareness programs. These could include workshops led by professionals that teach coping strategies and stress management techniques. Additionally, establishing a school counseling center where students can seek help confidentially would provide a safe space for those in need. Such initiatives not only foster a supportive community but also reduce the stigma associated with seeking help.
Thank you for considering these suggestions. I believe they will contribute positively to our school environment.
Yours,
Li Hua

【答案】Almost in tears, I poured out the whole story. With a lump in my throat, I explained how much I loved poetry and that I had never even considered plagiarizing. Mr. Jordan listened attentively, nodding occasionally as I spoke. When I finished, he smiled gently and reassured me that it was okay to feel sad, “Sharing your creativity is a brave thing to do, Linda,” he said warmly. “Even if it didn’t go as planned, your courage is admirable. Remember, talent like yours is a gift. Trust in your own abilities and let your work speak for itself.” His words comforted me, giving me a sense of affirmation I desperately needed in that moment of doubt and frustration.
Inspired by his words, I gathered my courage and turned back to the classroom. Mrs. Baker looked up as I entered, her expression now softened with understanding. Taking a deep breath, I assured everyone the poem was indeed my own creation and explained how I had crafted the poem about my father with love and care, “I’d like to recite it again,” I said with determination. This time, I recited the poem slowly and clearly, letting the emotions behind the words flow naturally. As I finished, there was a moment of silence before applause broke out, genuine and warm. “Sorry for the misunderstanding and thank you for sharing that,” Mrs. Baker said sincerely, “Your poem is really touching.” The tension lifted, and I felt a sense of pride knowing that I did surprise my classmates and Mrs. Baker.
