(2023山东济南统考)I live in a small but lovely neighborhood. Our house is
neither large nor luxurious, but it has a fairly big garden. My father loves his garden.
He planted some seeds in it, and took good care of the plants, watering them,
applying fertilizer, weeding and getting rid of bugs. He was never tired of doing all
that stuff. But at that time, I didn't understand why working in the dirt excited him so
much.
Unfortunately, in the summer vacation before my senior high school, my father
was seriously injured in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. My mother
had several business trips, so she couldn't take care of the garden. I didn't want my
father to worry. I said that I would take care of his garden until he recovered. I
assumed that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and
luckily it rained fairly often, so I didn't think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, "Christine, the vegetables should be
about ready to be picked. Let's have a salad today!" I went out to the garden and was
upset to see that the lettuce(生菜) leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs.
There were hundreds of bugs all over them!
I panicked for a moment but then I quietly went to the nearest supermarket to
buy some vegetables. When I was making the salad, my mother came home and saw
the bag from the supermarket in the kitchen. I was embarrassed and admitted, "Dad
would like a salad, but the garden is a disaster. I don't want to disappoint him, so I
went to the supermarket and bought some vegetables." My mother smiled, saying,
"Honey, you know what is the right thing to do."

boomed. "Runners set, then the gun. If you hear another shot, return to the starting
line to start again." My heart raced as I got my legs ready to race.

runners. As I rounded the first turn, my schoolmates greeted me with heartening shouts.
Then, in what felt like only one minute, I arrived at the one mile mark.
"6′10", " a man declared as I ran by. I tried to ignore him, but my legs began to
burn as I realized I had run a mile and still had two to go. I slowed down my pace,
for I knew the second mile was the worst of all three.
Minutes later, I felt horrible. My legs ached, feeling like lead blocks. My vision was
clouded as sweat dropped down into my eyes, and my arms felt as if they would fall
off if I swung them one more time. Just as I almost reached my limit, a boy passed
me. He also seemed to have lost strength but soon he was a little ahead of me.
I gathered up my strength to speed up but suddenly fell to the ground.
In the last mile, seeing the athletes passing us one by one, I asked the boy to
run without me.

As it was getting late, the courtyard became deserted. But Hector still didn't want
to leave. Then he saw Mr. Adler crossing the courtyard and holding a half-open bag
full of papers. As he hurried past, an envelope dropped out but Mr. Adler was
unaware, turned a corner and disappeared out of sight. Hector picked it up. On the
envelope were the words "Fifth Grade Geography Competition Questions and Answers".
Hector stared wide-eyed at the envelope. Before he even had time to reflect on the
consequences, he opened it and read the questions.
As soon as Hector had done it, he knew it was the wrong choice. He'd cheated
and whatever he did now, he couldn't change the fact. "What if Mr. Adler thought I
stole this morning's questions too " Hector thought. "He'd take away my class
championship for sure." Little did he know that one of the best days in his life would
be turned into the worst so quickly. Torn by his conscience, Hector was totally at a
loss what to do.
Before he realized it, Hector found himself standing in Mr. Adler's office.
The next day the entire school came to watch the Fifth Grade Geography
Competition.

cat, not him, could come and go. He even asked me to give Meatball a curfew.
Meatball became a regular.
One night, temperatures were unusually low. Meatball stood at the door, meowing
to go outside.
I shook my head at her, afraid that she might freeze to death. She stared at me
and meowed again. I patted her head, "I know you're not happy, but it's for your own
good."
"Mom is not being mean to you," Nathan told the cat. "She's just trying to keep
you from turning into a frozen meatball." We both laughed at his joke.
The next morning, I couldn't find Meatball. I asked the kids if anyone had seen
her.
Jordan nodded, "I let her out last night."
As I drove to the animal hospital, Jordan sat in the back, holding Meatball
inside his coat.

to cook the rest of the porridge. But Jeff's hand touched the hot burner and he gave a
cry of pain. Jenna made him put his hand in cold water. Then she caught the smell
of burning. Oh dear! The piece of bread in the pan had turned black as well.
As the twins looked around them in disappointment, their father appeared.
The twins carried the breakfast upstairs and woke their mother up.

With the pumpkin resting on the table, hole uppermost, I bent over and pressed
my head against the opening. At first I got jammed just above my eyes and then, as I
went on with my task, unwilling to quit, my nose briefly prevented entry. Finally I
managed to put my whole head into it, like a cork(软木塞) forced into a bottle. I
was able to straighten up with the huge pumpkin resting on my shoulders.
My excitement was short-lived. The pumpkin was heavy."I'm going to set it down,
now," I said, and with Jason helping to support its weight, I bent back over the table
to give it somewhere to rest. It was only when I tried to remove my head that I
realized getting out was going to be less straightforward than getting in. When I
pulled hard, my nose got in the way. I got into a panic as I pressed firmly against
the table and moved my head around trying to find the right angle, but it was no
use."I can't get it out!" I shouted, my voice sounding unnaturally loud in the enclosed
space.
I was stuck for five or six minutes though it felt much longer.
