Passage 1
An 89-year-old man, Manfred Steiner, has reached a goal
he spent 20 years working toward and nearly a lifetime thinking about: earning his Ph.
D.And now he is a physicist.
Steiner values this degree because it is what he always wanted and because he
overcame health problems that could have affected his studies. "But I made it, and this
was the most satisfactory point in my life," he said.
When he was young, Steiner wanted to become a physicist after reading about
Albert Einstein. But his mother and uncle persuaded him that studying medicine would
be a better choice. He earned his medical degree in 1955 and moved to the US soon
after.
Steiner studied hematology(血液学) at Tufts University and biochemistry at the
Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He became a full professor and led the
hematology department at Brown University's medical school from 1985 to 1994.
Steiner helped establish a research program in hematology at the University of North
Carolina. He directed that program until he retired from medicine in 2000.
Steiner found medical research pleasing, but it was not quite the same as his
interest in physics. "It was something like a wish that was never fulfilled and always
stuck in my head," he said. At age 70, he started taking undergraduate classes.
Physics professor Brad Marston was surprised when Steiner entered his quantum
mechanics class. But he became Steiner's adviser on his dissertation(学位论文) after
realizing how serious Steiner was about the subject and how hard he worked. "He has
written many papers on medical science, more papers than I've written on physics,"
Marston said. "One thing that's really true about Manfred is that he perseveres."
After the university published a story about Steiner on its website, people across
the US contacted him to ask for advice on how to go after their dreams later in life.
His advice is: Do what you love to do.

No pain, no gain. This is especially true for
Amanda Gorman. In 2021, she became the youngest poet to write and read her work
at the presidential inauguration(就职典礼).The 22-year-old impressed the audience
with The Hill We Climb, which referred to both painful history and hope for the
future.
You wouldn't know it from her delivery of her poem at the inauguration, but up
until a few years ago, she struggled to overcome her speech problem. For much of
her life, including when she was still an undergraduate at Harvard, Gorman had
trouble pronouncing the letter "R".
Her situation not only presented difficulties, but also had benefits."I think it made
me all that much stronger as a writer when you have to teach yourself how to say
words from zero. I think of my speech trouble not as a weakness or a disability, but
as one of my greatest strengths."
To practice saying the letter, she'd listen repeatedly to one song packed with
"R"s — Aaron Burr, Sir from Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical Hamilton.She would try
to keep up with the singer as he was doing the rap. She believed if she could train
herself to do this song, then she could train herself to say the letter "R" correctly.
Sure enough, rapping along with Miranda's fast-paced rhymes worked, and Gorman's
performance of her piece, The Hill We Climb, ranked among the highlights of the
inauguration.
Overcoming the speech problem is a milestone for her. Gorman said she owed a
lot to the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical. That was why she included a few references
to Hamilton in her inspiring poem, some of which the author of Hamilton noticed.
He praised her performance in a post. "You were perfect. Perfectly written, perfectly
delivered."
1.What did Gorman do to impress the audience at the inauguration ( )
B
A.Share her painful story. B.Read her poem in public.
C.Write a poem in real time. D.Express concern for future.
In 2021, she…for the future"可知,Gorman在总统就职典礼上公开读
A、D项,The Hill We Climb这首诗提到了她痛
C项,Write a poem是对的,in real time表
换:B项中的"Read her poem"与原文中的"read her
2.Which word used to be difficult for Gorman to read properly ( )
D
A.Amanda. B.Mickey. C.Hamilton. D.Miranda.
For much of…the letter ‘R’"可知,字母"R"的发音对
3.Why did Gorman learn to sing Aaron Burr, Sir ( )
C
A.To win wide recognition. B.To train her singing skills.
C.To improve pronunciation. D.To learn fast-paced styles.
四段中的"To practice saying…musical Hamilton"可知,Gorman学唱Aaron Burr, Sir是为
换:C项"To improve pronunciation"与原文中
的"To practice saying the letter"是同义替换。
4.What can we learn from Gorman's story ( )
B
A.Learn to walk before you run. B.Practice breaks down barriers.
C.Power of role models is great. D.Poem writing is key to success.
For much of…pronouncing the letter ‘R’"以及
Overcoming the speech problem is a milestone for her"可知,克服发音问题

A mild-mannered cat by day, at night Rusty was just the
opposite. Often, Bill and I would lie in bed quarrelling over whether we should let it
out to wander in the dark or put up with another sleepless night.
So, instead, we lay in the dark each noisy night and wondered what damage
Rusty would do. And always in the morning, if I had forgotten to put the butter in
the cupboard, there were marks from a rough, little tongue and once even a paw print.
Something had to give. Bill looked at me straight in the eyes, "Do it." My
reservations were such that it took me several weeks to decide because we didn't have
much choice.
That night, I put Rusty on his cat bed and patted him a little guiltily on the head.
Then I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water. Rusty loved
jumping into a damp sink and then tracking water all over the cupboards and across
the kitchen floor. According to the article I saved from a website to my folder, cats
used to jumping into your sink won't do it again if they jump in and find a couple of
inches of water.
Next, I cleared the cupboards of everything. Then I got out all my metal cookie
sheets and a fork to go with each. According to the article, you should support a
cookie sheet with a fork. When your cat jumps on the counter, he will knock down
the insecurely balanced cookie sheets. What happens next will stop him from doing it
a second time.
Everything in place, I slipped onto our bed quietly, waiting. Suddenly, there came
an awfully loud noise of metal, and a chain reaction of crashes next. Finally, Rusty
rounded the corner in the hall heavily and leaped through our doorway onto the foot
of our bed, trembling under our cover. And that was the night Rusty, the Midnight
Troublemaker, retired.
1.Which of the following best describes Rusty at night ( )
D
A.Cold-blooded. B.Adorable. C.Good-tempered. D.Troublesome.
据第一段中的mild-mannered cat by day和just the opposite可以判断夜里Rusty的行为与
2.What did Bill mean by saying "Do it" ( )
B
A.To leave the cat outdoors. B.To give the cat a lesson.
C.To reserve food for the cat. D.To give the cat more butter.
根据"Do it"定位
I began filling the kitchen sink with
about two inches of water…won't do it again"和第五段中的"I got out all my metal
cookie sheets and a fork…stop him from doing it a second time"可以推断,作者想通
3.What did the writer do before she went to bed that night ( )
B
A.She filled the sink with water. B.She laid two traps for the cat.
C.She covered the counter with sheets. D.She cleaned the kitchen thoroughly.
I began filling the kitchen sink with about two inches of water"和第五段
中的"I got out all my metal cookie sheets and a fork to go with each"可知,作者在
4.How did the author probably feel about the outcome of her effort ( )
A
A.Satisfied. B.Disappointed. C.Anxious. D.Regretful.
定:根据题干中的关键词"the outcome of her effort"及"题文同
And that
was the night Rusty, the Midnight Troublemaker, retired"可知,经过作者的努力,爱在

Passage 4
One of the reasons I became a teacher was how much I
loved the reading and writing process, and how excited I was to help young children
develop as readers and writers. One day, I discovered a work of Vivian Paley, who
developed a storytelling curriculum(课程) for young children, which involves writing
down the contents of students' drawings and having their classmates act out these
stories. I was immediately drawn to Paley's focus on drama.
One morning, as my students gathered in our classroom for our writing lesson, I
told them that they could draw anything they'd like, imaginary or real.
They discussed with one another what they liked to draw and some shared their ideas
loud, which helped inspire those who weren't ready with their own ideas. For the next
half hour or so, I observed that even my most hesitant and unwilling students were
drawing with a sense of concentration and purpose.
Later, we sat in a circle and I explained that we would act out some of their
stories. The writer would choose classmates to be the characters in the story, and I
would tell the story. Then a student stood up to announce which characters she'd need.
I watched as one student played a rabbit, another played a fairy, and another played a
rainbow cloud. When the play was over, the actors and the "director" bowed, and the
class clapped for them. The next "director" jumped to her feet, shouting, "My story is
the next!"
After I taught in this way, my students began to write down their own stories,
though I always provided aid in the writing process when they needed. The goal of
these lessons is not to turn my students into fluent writers in kindergarten but to
provide them with the chance to become writers, to see themselves as storytellers, and
to experience the magical feeling when their ideas come to life.

Most teenagers kill time playing video games, or
surfing TikTok. But it's not so for William Gadoury, a 14-year-old from Quebec.
William Gadoury has been crazy about the Mayans for most of his childhood, ever
since his grandparents bought him books about the civilization. What started as a
hobby at age 12 snowballed into serious research, and he theorized that the locations
of Mayan cities might correspond to stars in Mayan constellations(星座).
Using ancient books, Gadoury analyzed 22 Mayan constellation maps and covered
the positions onto HERE WeGo images of the Yucatan Peninsula, which to this day is
home to large local populations and some best-preserved architecture from Mayan
culture. He would track the constellations from HERE WeGo using special sheets,
covering them onto the position of Mayan cities on a paper map. The teen was able
to show that 117 Mayan cities matched up with the position of the stars, with the
brightest stars representing bigger cities.
But when Gadoury was working on the 23rd Mayan constellation, he found a
conflict: three stars, but only two ancient cities on HERE WeGo. The third star
pointed to a location on the Mexico-Belize border. However, the area was covered
with thick jungle, leaving Gadoury stuck.
Luckily, he asked Canadian Space Agency(CSA) for images from their
RADARSAT-2 satellite. Indeed, there was a square, man-made-looking structure in the
heavy forest. Gadoury then learned a fire had swept across the region, thinning out the
grass cover. He found images from the agency, and eventually concluded that there
was indeed a city there.
Gadoury's findings eventually took him into the jungle in 2022 to search on foot,
along with scientist Francisco Estrada-Belli. The team discovered a farming village
deep in the Mexican jungle, which showed the "backbone" of the Maya's long-term
success, which was down to their ability to work the land and support large cities.

Leia was fresh out of college when she
began working as a member of a business-development team at a mid-size tech
company. Though her skills had earned her the job, she was the youngest person in
the team. "Everybody else was pretty much twice my age," she says. "I heard about
comments being made behind my back. There were a couple of times when my
superiors referred to my age right in front of me, saying I was too young, ‘What does
a 23-year-old know about these things ’"
Leia tried to change things by altering her appearance at work. "I changed the
way I dressed. I tried to make myself look older and more ‘ladylike’. I changed my
mannerisms and tried to act older," she says. "It worked, to an extent." The comments
about her age and perceived inexperience lessened, but Leia says she still felt like her
growth potential was limited. She left the company soon after.
What Leia experienced was ageism traditionally seen as something only older
people face. For instance, older workers might be judged based on assumptions that
they won't fit in with the progressive office dynamics or learn technology quickly. A
US study showed that nearly two-thirds of workers aged 45 and older had seen or
experienced age discrimination. But younger workers face age discrimination, too. In
fact, new research shows it may actually be the youngest team members who are
bearing the impact of workplace ageism right now.
Leia says removing ageism entirely will ultimately require a fundamental change
to corporate culture, which has long tied seniority(资历) to skill. "We prize years of
experience a little too much, and I don't think years of experience and skill are
necessarily related," she says. "Steve Jobs was 21 when he founded Apple. We don't
know how much younger people actually have to contribute. Hopefully, more
employers are realizing it."

anxiety and mental health problems, was set up by Chris's friend Mark Sproston.
Chris's latest race, Run North West's Festive 10k in Cheshire, was his fourth race

Chris had been a little worried if the weather would be too chilly for his daughter.
"No matter how difficult it is, I want to get us both a festive New Year medal before
it gets too cold," he added. "We have four medals now and we have run 51km in

In October, it took Chris just under three hours to complete the Manchester Half
with his daughter on his back. The dad says his little girl rested her hands on his

Passage 10

Eliana Yi dreamed of pursuing a piano performance in
college, never minding that her fingers could barely reach the length of an octave
Unable to fully play many works by Romantic-era composers including
Beethoven and Brahms, she tried anyway — and in her determination to spend hours
practicing a Chopin concerto(协奏曲), wound up injuring herself.
The efforts of Professor Carol Leone from the Southern Methodist University
(SMU) have changed all that: Twenty years ago, the school became the first major
university in the U.S. to introduce smaller keyboards into its music program, leveling
the playing field for Yi and other piano majors.
Yi, 21 years old, tried one of the smaller keyboards, "I remember being really
excited, because my hands could actually reach and play all the right notes," she said.
For decades, few questioned the size of the traditional piano. For those with small
hand spans(掌距), it's difficult to properly play many works of Beethoven and
Brahms. Those who attempt to play them either get used to skipping notes or risk
injury with repeated play. Leone is familiar with such challenges. Born into a family
of musicians, she favored classical music and pursued piano despite her small hand
spans and earned a doctorate in musical arts.
The idea of smaller keyboards first met resistance from some traditionalists. Leone
also said that when she raised the issue with one Viennese professor, he told her there
were already too many pianists anyway.
Though such resistance is fading, there are some very traditional people who think
of piano as a competitive thing. Leone said, "This is art. It's not sport. It's about
making as much beautiful art as possible, and we should give everybody the
opportunity to do that."

(2023浙江杭州质检)Kenya has been at the forefront(前沿) of the global war
on plastic since the government banned single-use plastics in protected areas in June
2020. Unfortunately, the preventive measures have barely received attention. Hundreds
of tons of industrial and consumer plastic waste continue to get dumped into landfills
daily. However, if 29-year-old Nzambi Matee has her will, the unpleasant plastic heaps
will soon be transformed into colorful bricks.
The material engineer's seeking to find a practical solution to control plastic
pollution began in 2017. She quit her job and set up a small lab in her mother's
backyard. It took her nine months to produce the first brick and even longer to
convince a partner to help set up the machinery to make them. But the determined
eco-entrepreneur was confident in her idea and did not give up.
She says, "I wanted to use my education to handle plastic waste pollution. But I
was very clear that the solution had to be practical, sustainable, and affordable. The
best way to do this was by channeling the waste into the construction space and
finding the most efficient and affordable material to build homes." Her company
produces over 1,500 bricks a day. The pavers are made using a mix of plastic
products that cannot be reprocessed or recycled.
The collected plastic is mixed with sand, heated at very high temperatures, and
compressed(压缩) into bricks that vary in color and thickness. The resulting product
is stronger, lighter, and about 30 percent cheaper than concrete bricks. More
importantly, it helps repurpose the lowest quality of plastic. "There is that waste they
cannot process anymore; they cannot recycle. That is what we get," Matee says.
Matee is not nearly done. Her dream is to reduce the mountain of trash to just a
hill by increasing production and expanding her offerings. She says, "The more we
recycle the plastic, the more we will produce affordable housing, the more we will
create employment for the youth."

B
A.Kenya: Pioneer in Banning Single-use Plastics
B.Nzambi Matee: Innovator in Solving Plastic Waste
C.Mix of Plastic Products: a New Construction Material
D.Plastic Recycling: a Creative Solution to Pollution
However, if 29-year-old

As a child, Fischer loved going to the beach and riding
bikes along the coastline with his father, Karl Fischer. So when he lost his dad to
pancreatic cancer, he turned to the healing power of the ocean.
At the start of this year, Fischer wrote his father's name on his surfboard and
took it out to sea in Newport, Rhode Island. His father's name shone in the sun on
what felt like a shared adventure. Inspired, Fischer made a video and posted it on
social media on the same day. "If you love the ocean, or you know someone who
loves the ocean, or maybe you lost someone who just loved being outdoors…you can
comment on this video with their name and a bit of their stories, and I'll put their
name on my board here, just like I've done with my father's name," he said in the
video. "And I'll take them out in the ocean for you."
Names poured in from thousands of strangers grieving(悲伤) the loss of their
loved ones. And with that the One Last Wave Project was born, the aim of which
was to exchange stories with a community of people going through the same pain.
They were essentially healed together. About two months later, Fischer received over
5,000 names and wrote most of them on two surfboards. The space of the first two
surfboards ran out — he's working on getting more. He wrote the names in neat
letters on the surfboard and put a clear acrylic(丙烯酸的) coat over them so that
they didn't wash off.
Though a lot of people have been struggling with grief in the pandemic, Fischer
was amazed by the responses that have poured in. "If I am able to help one or more
persons, that is enough for me," he said. "But I am blown away — by not just the
number of people sharing, but the depth of stories and love that they are sharing."
And he plans to take his project around the world and connect with even more
people — through shared grief and the power of the ocean.

Passage 13
Tim Holland is 18 years old and a senior at Lucy
C. Laney Comprehensive High School in Augusta, Georgia. Ever since he was young,
Holland has been loving animals, particularly the cold-blooded kind. He decided to try
herping(野采), something most young men like him aren't into, in 2020 and said
the first time was "low-key and hard" because he didn't know exactly where the
animals were.
After a while, Holland gained hands-on experience and developed a sharp eye.
Influenced by him, some of his friends tried out herping too.
One of these friends, Ro Smith, encouraged him to start a TikTok page about herping.
It took some convincing, but Holland eventually decided to try it and started his
TikTok page Nukherping. The general format of his videos is pretty simple:Holland
shows animals he has found, says a bit about them and then repeats, with the desire
to make them known to the viewers. He has slowly become very popular, with his
biggest video gaining over 2 million views in early April.
Though his videos are laid-back, Holland takes herping safety very seriously and
hopes his audience could take it seriously, too. Holland keeps a distance from any
dangerous animals he finds and adds warnings to videos with such creatures, telling
his viewers "do not try this at home". He also carries equipment such as hand
sanitizer, gloves and snake sticks to ensure safety and cleanliness.
Holland hopes to travel after graduating from high school so he can check off
some of the animals on his "must-see" list. He also plans to study zoology at North
Greenville University in South Carolina and play on the soccer team there.
Some people around Holland think Holland is crazy for what he does, but his
mother, Latasha, takes a different view. "I think that's gonna be very interesting. He
can inspire and educate other young boys and girls with his experience, and it's also
something that's going to be good for the community," she said.

On Mondays, two of my children get ready for school in
an unusual way. Each packs plenty of food and water, a pair of rubber boots and
sometimes a cup of hot chocolate. Then, I drop them off at a nearby park where they
spend the entire day outside at a certified forest school.
When I first let them sign up for the forest school program,I loved the idea, but
as a mum, I was concerned about a few things:Would they be comfortable outside for
that long Would they stay engaged for that many hours Then I asked them if time
ever seemed to move slowly, they stared at me in confusion. They didn't understand my
question,which fittingly removed my concern.
In this program, kids direct their own play, climbing tall trees or testing ice on the
frozen lake. They are never told their play is too high or too sharp, but are rather
trusted to self-adjust. Something else my sons appreciate about the forest school is not
being told to move on to the next activity, but being left to stay in a particular spot
for as long as their curiosity allows.
"What about all the things they're missing in real school " concerned parents have
asked me. Neither of their classroom teachers think it's a pro
