On a rainy night three years ago my dear mom went to accompany her Lord. She did it her way.
I got the call at work, and l headed home quickly. Mom and Dad lived on a small farm that they had owned since I was seven. I hated going there every weekend. There was nothing for a young girl to do but watch the one station on the old TV set, if the weather allowed reception.
My mom, on the other hand, loved the peace and quiet of the land. The place was rural, with no indoor plumbing or heat. We had a big wood stove in the kitchen that did its best to heat the little farmhouse, but it always seemed cold and too quiet to me.
In the evenings, my mom and I would sit for hours singing in the little kitchen. I sang the melody and Mom harmonized. Her favorite song was “Moon River” and we sang it over and over. Mom told me stories about how when I was a little girl I could sing before I could talk.
As time passed, I had my own children and went to visit them every week or two. The kids loved the farm and the tractor rides with my dad. Me, well, I still hated the silence of the farm. While my mom loved to sit at her kitchen table and look out at her garden and flowers and retell all the old stories, I missed the hustle and bustle of my life at home. But I sat there listening quietly as she reminisced.
Now, I sat back in the silence and the silence was deathly so I finally leaned over to turn on an old radio. Music always comforted me. My heart skipped a beat. “Moon River” was playing on the radio. I sat there wordless, with a tear running down my cheek; as I listened to every familiar note.

It has recently been announced that the British royal family is to slim. The queen plans to reduce the number of real royals. However, there seems little sign of the monarchy(君主)disappearing completely.
Up till the 17th century, the British king or queen was believed to role by “divine right”, which was the idea that God chose the king or queen to role and that he or she was therefore above the law. However, this idea ended with the English Revolution, in which King Charles the first was imprisoned and then killed in 1649.
So what role does the British royal family have today?
Well, the Queen has important formal duties: as Head of State, the Queen represents the UK on visits abroad and invites other world leaders to-visit the UK. As Head of the Armed Forces, only the Queen can declare when the UK is at war or when war is over. The Queen also has constitutional duties: She has to sign many government and Commonwealth documents every day.
In addition, the royal family spends a great deal of its time traveling up and down the country in support of different Charity projects. But the public in Britain do not believe there should be a royal family. Sometimes, the press and media criticize the royal family as well. One criticism is that British people should not have to pay for the royal family through their taxes.
Today, the royal family works hard to be relevant in the modem world. The queen’s speech on TV is less formal every Christmas, and is now available as a podcast. In 2005, after graduation from university, Prince William spent time teaching English in Uruguay, the sort of work many young British people do at some time in their lives.
25. What can be concluded from the first two paragraphs?
A. The British king or queen is no longer believed to role by divine right.
B. The British king or queen is about to become common people.
C. The English Revolution put an end to the British royal family in 1649.
D. The royal family’s role was most important in Britain in the 17th century.
26. Which of the following is NOT among formal duties of the Queen?
A. Declaring when the UK is at war.
B. Travelling around the world for charity projects,
C. Inviting other world leaders to visit the UK.
D. Signing commonwealth documents every day.
27. Prince William is mentioned in the passage to show that ________.
A. he is popular in the UK
B. many young British people do voluntary work
C. he has tried to win young people’s admiration
D. the royal family is trying to change their image
28. We can infer from the passage that ________.
A. British people are all in favor of the royal family
B. the British royal family are facing surviving challenges
C. the public are encouraged to oppose the royal family
D. British youths are required to teach English in Uruguay in their lives

It seems that nowadays all the world are concerned about genetically modified foods (GM foods). GM foods develop from genetically modified organisms, which have had specific changes introduced into their DNA by genetic engineering techniques. These techniques are much more precise where an organism is exposed to chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. For many people, the high-tech production raises all kinds of environmental, ethical, health and safety problems. Particularly in countries with long farming traditions, the idea seems against nature.
In fact, GM foods are already very much a part of our lives. They were first put on the market in 1996. A third of the corn and more than half the cotton grown in the US last year was the product of biotechnology, according to the Department of Agriculture. More than 65 million acres of genetically modified crops will be planted in the US this year. The genetic genie is out of the bottle.
However, like any new product entering the food chain, GM foods must be subjected to careful testing. In wealthy countries, the debate about biotech is not so fierce by the fact that they have a large number of foods to choose from, and a supply that goes beyond the needs. In developing countries desperate to feed fast-growing and underfed populations, the matter is simpler and much more urgent: do the benefits of biotech outweigh the risks?
The statistics on population growth and hunger are disturbing. Last year the world’s population reached 6 billion. The UN states that nearly 800 million people around the world are unhealthy. About 400 million women of childbearing age don’t have enough iron, which means their babies are exposed to various birth defects. As many as 100 million children suffer from vitamin A deficiency, a leading cause of blindness.
How can biotech help? Genetic engineering is widely used to produce plants and animals with better nutritional values. Biotechnologists have developed genetically modified rice and they are working on other kinds of nutritionally improved crops. Biotech can also improve farming productivity in places where food shortage is caused by crop damage attributable to drought, poor soil and crop viruses.
32. The passage mainly talks about _______.
A. the world’s food problem B. the development in biotech
C. the genetically modified foods D. the way to solve food shortage
33. According to the passage, GM foods ________.
A. will replace naturally grown foods
B. are far better than naturally grown foods
C. may help to solve the problem of poor nutrition
D. can cause serious trouble in developing countries
34. The underlined sentence “The genetic genie is out of the bottle.” in paragraph 2 probably means that _______.
A. GM foods are available everywhere
B. the technology in producing GM foods is advanced
C. genetic technology may have uncontrollable powers
D. genetic technology has come out of laboratories into markets
35. What’s the writer’s attitude towards GM foods?
A. Optimistic. B. Cautious. C. Disapproving. D. Unbelievable.

In my personal view, the major task for students is to learn knowledge with various approaches, for which healthy body and mind is the base. Therefore, they should focus more attention on their lessons and be less dependent on electronics. They should also make the best of their spare time to take sports, such as soccer, basketball, running and so on. Taking part in some?rewarding activities like being volunteers to help the old is another good choice.??Besides, such interaction?as talking or chatting with?friends and classmates can reduce the dependence on the electronics psychologically.
