I knew it was going to be a bad fireworks season this year when I saw so many different tents selling them to the public. I was right. The bangs and booms (噼啪声) started before the first of January and lasted way past the fourth. I have never been a big fan of fireworks since I was a boy. I remember a local fair set off a huge show near our house and I saw how the noise terrified our dogs. I sat on the floor with them during the whole show, holding their shaking bodies.
I know a lot of people enjoy the colorful light shows the fireworks can put on at times. They can be bright and beautiful. Still, I find that I prefer the gentler lights of summer to these noisy ones. I love seeing the moon rising above the hills in the evening. Its gentle, smiling face always reminds me that someone loves me and is watching over me from above.
The shinning stars also always look so heavenly and wonderful when you take the time to look up into the skies and watch them shine. I also love the beautiful, blinking (眨眼的) lights of the fireflies this time of the year. Seeing their lovely, little lights as they fly around always fills my heart with light and delight as well. It warms my soul and reminds me of what a perfect world we live in.
I think we all need to take action to grow the gentler lights within ourselves. Our society seems to praise and admire those who come off as booming and brash (自以为是的).
4. Why does the author mention his childhood’s experience
A. To tell an old story about fireworks.
B. To remind us of the danger of fireworks.
C. To stress a joyful atmosphere with fireworks.
D. To explain his tiredness of fireworks.
5. Why does the author prefer lights like the moonlight
A. Because they are bright and beautiful.
B. Because they give him pleasant feelings.
C. Because they don’t scare his dogs away.
D. Because they attract beautiful fireflies.
6. How does the author feel when seeing the fireflies
A. Grateful. B. Joyful. C. Determined. D. Unconcerned.
7. What would the author write about in the following paragraph
A. Why gentler lights are better than noisy ones.
B. Where gentler lights can be found in our life.
C. When we can stop great noises such as fireworks.
D. How we can make the world a gentler place.

Eating a plant-based diet has been shown to be very good for your heart and your overall health. In fact, a recent study found a young person could live an additional 13 years by eating more vegetables and legumes (豆类), as well as whole grains, fruit and nuts.
The findings of a new analysis of the diets of nearly 400,000 UK adults published Monday in the journal Frontiers in Nutrition are rather shocking: Eating veggies, especially cooked ones, doesn’t reduce your risk of heart disease over time.
“Our large study did not find evidence for a protective effect of vegetable intake on the occurrence of CVD (心血管疾病),” said Qi Feng, an epidemiologist at the University of Oxford, in a statement.
While the study found eating raw veggies could protect against heart disease, cooked vegetables did not. Any benefit went away when researchers factored in lifestyle factors such as physical activity, educational level, smoking, drinking, fruit intake, red and processed meat consumption, and use of mineral and vitamin supplements.
“Instead, our analyses show that the seemingly protective effect of vegetable intake against CVD risk is very likely to be accounted for by bias (偏差)... related to differences in socioeconomic situation and lifestyle,” Feng said.
Don’t start celebrating yet, veggie haters. Experts in the UK and United States quickly took exception to the study’s conclusion.
“Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn’t associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account that doesn’t mean we should stop eating vegetables,” said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.
“The results are not surprising. Picking out one single component and assuming just adding it to the diet, e. g., vegetables, is not likely to result in the desired effect,” Alice Lichtenstein, director and senior scientist at Tufts University’s Cardiovascular Nutrition Laboratory, told CNN in an email.
“One thing that has become clear over the past decade is that we should not be looking at single foods or nutrients, rather the whole dietary pattern,” said Lichtenstein.
8. What can we learn from the new study led by Feng
A. It followed a young UK person for 13 years.
B. Its findings came as no surprise to other people.
C. It overturned the conclusion of previous studies.
D. Its purpose was to find the right vegetables for people.
9. What did Feng imply about vegetables’ protective effect
A. It was totally made up by some researchers.
B. It still held true despite some different findings.
C. It could only be achieved by living a healthy lifestyle.
D. It was a misconception caused by differences in people.
10. What does the underlined phrase “take exception to” in Paragraph 6 mean
A. Voice objections to. B. Add details to.
C. Show respect for. D. Take notice of.
11. What did Lichtenstein think of the study
A. It was groundbreaking. B. It was one-sided.
C. It would cause confusion. D. It needed more evidence.
D
There are close to 7, 000 languages spoken on Earth. However, it’s estimated that by the end of this century, up to 50% of them may be lost.
It’s commonly thought that majority languages tend to be valued for being useful and for promoting progress, while minority languages are seen as barriers to progress, and the value placed on them is seen mainly as sentimental (感情用事的). But is sentimentality really the only motivation for preserving language diversity
Speakers of endangered languages often live in remote areas with unique landform. It is quite common for these languages to distinguish between hundreds more types of plants and animals than those known to modern science. For example, in Southeast Asia, some tribes have discovered the medicinal properties of over sixty-five hundred plant species. This has led to many of landmark achievements in medicine.
It was once believed that the limits of one’s language defined the limits of one’s thought. This theory, called the Sapir-Wharf hypothesis (假说), has been largely rejected in favor of the improved version, which assumes that the language we speak does not set the limits of our thoughts, but it does direct our focus in certain ways. For example, English is a tense-based language. It’s nearly impossible to talk about doing something without specifying the time—i. e. I went to the party (past), I’m going to the party (present), or I’ll go to the party (future). This differs from Chinese, where it’s perfectly reasonable to say, “I go to the party” without defining the “when”. Thus, part of the richness of language is that it allows us to organize the world in so many unique ways.
Some languages categorize the world in ways so different from our own that they are difficult to conceptualize (概念化). The United States employed native Navajo speakers to create a system of message coding (译码) during the Second World War. The Japanese were never able to break it, and the “code talkers” are often cited today as having helped decide the outcome of the war.
As we’ve already seen, minority languages are valuable for many practical reasons. In conclusion, I’d say the short answer is yes — dying languages are certainly worth saving!
12. What do people tend to think of minority languages
A. Valueless. B. Time-honored. C. Informal. D. Stable.
13. How can we benefit from endangered languages according to the author
A. We can discover drugs in a much safer way.
B. We don’t have to rely on modern medicine.
C. We can obtain a broad knowledge of nature.
D. We can learn how to protect plants and animals.
14. Why does the author mention the coding system during the Second World War
A. To correct the Sapir-Wharf hypothesis.
B To prove the value of minority languages.
C. To show wars’ role in preserving a language.
D. To explain ways to conserve some languages.
15. What would be a suitable title for the text
A. Are majority languages worth valuing
B. Are we willing to save dying languages
C. Should endangered languages be saved
D. Is the future of minority languages bright

Her father was only a settler working on a palm oil estate.
Though she was determined to decline the offer, Sara went to visit Ms. Chang with the letter. Ms. Chang was one of the most dedicated teachers that Sara knew. From a humble beginning, she supported herself at the Teachers’ Training College by teaching tuition. So shed understood how hard poor students struggled to continue their study. For years, not only did she bring reference books to the students, but she often took them out for lunch and assured them they would succeed in life.
“Congratulations Sara, I am so proud of you,” Ms. Chang said excitedly.” But I’m afraid I have to reject the offer, because my family is unable to bear the cost of enrolling me there, “Sara replied in a low tone. Ms. Chang looked at her intently and told her not to worry about finance. There would always be a way.
A few days later, when Sara was hesitating about declining the offer, her high school principal, Mr. Salim, called her to his office. To her astonishment, Mr. Salim handed her an envelope, in which Sara saw a large sum of cash. It was more than what she needed. But when Sara asked Mr. Salim where the money was from, he just told her that the person wanted to remain anonymous(匿名的).
With the money in the envelope, Sara became a freshman of the university. One month later, she received another sum of money. She called her father, ”Dad, you don’t have to send money to me. I can manage on my own. “Her father was stunned,” But I didn’t.“ From then on, Sara received the same sum of money every month. “Who is the kind soul that is making all this contribution ” she was always wondering.

“Although this study found that eating more vegetables wasn’t associated with a lower risk of heart and circulatory diseases once other lifestyle and other factors were taken into account, that doesn’t mean we should stop eating vegetables,” said Victoria Taylor, a senior dietitian at the British Heart Foundation, in a statement.

B. To prove the value of minority languages.

“Congratulations Sara I am so proud of you,” Ms.

【答案】Time flew and Sara graduated at last. It remained a riddle who the kind soul was. As she got a well-paid job and accumulated a large sum of money, Sara decided to pay back the anonymous helper. She went back to her high school and met Mr. Salim, who revealed the truth at her request. It was Ms. Chang, now a retired teacher, who was making all the contribution. Sara was in a flood of tears. She couldn’t wait to visit her.
With the address Mr. Salim gave her, Sara stood at the gate of Ms. Chang’s house. The memory of her last talk with Ms. Chang brought tears to her eye. “Without Ms. Chang’s help, I would not be where I am.” As she was lost in thought, the door opened and a kind, grey-haired lady greeted her. Sara choked up when she recognized Ms. Chang. She was so grateful that she hugged her teacher tightly. However hard Sally tried, Ms. Chang wouldn’t accept the money. “Pay it forward,” she said in earnest.
