For twelve years I’d worked at the hospital. One day they told me I was no longer needed. I understood that it was a cost-cutting move to replace me with someone with less experience and a lower salary.
But my understanding didn’t excise the pain of feeling abandoned and useless. At sixty-two, what opportunities existed for someone at my age “Dear Lord,” I prayed, “show me the way.” As he so often does, he answered through someone else, a fellow health educator at another hospital. When I shared my worries about my future, she told me about a conference she had attended recently.
“I’ve just learmed the most helpful tool,” she said. “No matter what the situation is, there is an opposite, a benefit. Our typical response is to focus on the losses of job, marriage, home, or even health. Instead, the speaker told us to concentrate on finding what we gained with our loss.” At first, I resisted her advice as I was extremely sad. I missed the meaningful challenges of organizing health education classes for the sick. But as time passed, I grew tired of my sorrow. Maybe I should try my friend’s advice and seek some opposites.
Yet it wasn’t until our trip to Africa that I understood the power of opposite thinking. In 2023, we flew eight thousand miles to a village in West Africa. We brought many presents, believing that somehow we could improve the villagers’ lives. Instead, they taught us the opposite. Our lives were the ones that needed improving.
Despite living in mud huts without modern conveniences, running water, or sanitation (卫生设备 ), the villagers appeared content. Frequently laughing and greeting each other, they truly cared for their neighbors. Although we slept on the ground, I felt a peace I hadn’t known since I left my job. I had expected we would spend our time helping the poor villagers. Instead, they were teaching us that having less meant less to worry about and more time and energy for each other. These wonderful people with a different faith taught me an important lesson that guided me through the darkness of life.
4. What can we learn about the author
A. She lacked work experience. B. She demanded higher salary.
C. She didn’t perform well at work. D. She was dismissed by the hospital.
5. What does the underlined word “excise” in paragraph 2 mean
A. Remove. B. Deepen. C. Classify. D. Describe.
6. What did the fellow health educator suggest the author do
A. Reevaluate her situation and find solutions to the failure.
B. Search for inner peace and cast off the economic darkness.
C. Stay positive and concentrate on health care education.
D. Shift her attitude to adversity and look on the bright side.
7. What lesson did the author learn from the villagers in Africa
A. Face up to the cruel realities of life.
B. Fortune favors those who use their judgement.
C. Owning more not necessarily adds to our happiness.
D. Devoting to volunteering can gain a sense of achievement.

Are people in some countries more generally dishonest than people in other countries An international team of researchers have examined this question.
In 2015, David Pascual-Ezama at Universidad Complutense Madrid and his colleagues investigated dishonesty in 16 different countries. They recruited 90 university students in each country to play a coin-flipping(抛硬币)game.
The game consisted of a single flip of a coin with a black and a white side. If the coin landed with the white side up, the student received a bar of chocolate as a prize. Each student flipped the coin in private and then reported the result to an experimenter. The experimenter didn’t know if a particular student reported the result truthfully or not. But—and here’s the clever part—the experimenter could accurately estimate the level of cheating in the group as a whole by simply counting the total number of chocolates handed out as prizes. If 90 students flip a coin, according to the laws of probability, about half of the coins will land on white and receive a prize. If almost all of the students report a prize-winning result, then we have evidence of a high level of cheating in that group.
Somewhat surprisingly, Pascual-Ezama and his team found that, across all 16 countries, only 57%of the students reported the white—just 7 percentage points higher than what we would expect if everyone told the truth. Among those students who would have been tempted(引诱)to lie because their coin landed on black, 86%of them resisted the temptation and told the truth. Some of the 16 countries cheated a little more and some a little less, but the differences were not statistically significant.
According to the researchers, the results of the study provide support for the theory of self- concept maintenance—we’re motivated by external incentives (激励)to cheat, but we’re also motivated by an internal desire to see ourselves as a good, decent, moral person. A low level of dishonesty(so-called”incomplete cheating”)is the result of our attempt to find a happy medium between external incentives to act dishonestly and our own internal desire to be a moral person.
8. Why did the researchers carry out the study
A. To discover the secret of being honest.
B. To highlight the significance of moral code.
C. To calculate the honest population in 16 countries.
D. To test participants’dishonesty in different countries.
9. What can be an evidence of a higher level of cheating in the group
A. Half of the coins are reported landing on black. B. Most participants report a prize-winning result.
C. A majority of students know the laws of probability. D. Almost all of the students successfully flip the coin.
10. What can be inferred from paragraph 4
A. The experimenters overestimated the level of cheating.
B. Over half of the students failed to resist the temptation.
C. There were visibly high levels of dishonesty across countries.
D. Some countries cheated remarkably more than other countries.
11. What role does “a happy medium” play according to the theory in the last paragraph
A. It regulates people’s behaviour. B. It drives people to act dishonestly.
C. It encourages people to compete. D. It limits people’s freedom of choice.
D
Researchers monitoring the lightless landscape of the Pacific Ocean floor think they’ve observed “dark oxygen” being created there, potentially challenging commonly held beliefs about how oxygen is produced on Earth.
Until now, it was thought that oxygen was created only through photosynthesis (光合作用), a process that requires sunlight. But the discovery casts doubt on that theory and raises new questions about the origins of life itself.
The research team led by Sweetman, a professor with the Scottish Association for Marine Science in Oban, Scotland, published its findings Monday in an article in the journal Nature Geoscience
The scientists aren’t certain how oxygen is created at such dark depths, but they believe it’s being produced by electrically charged minerals called polymetallic nodules (多金属结核). These nodules — “effectively batteries in a rock,” Sweetman said—may use their electric charge to split seawater into hydrogen and oxygen in a process called seawater electrolysis (电解).
Polymetallic nodules contain metals such as manganese, nickel and cobalt, which can be used to make the batteries used in consumer electronics, appliances and electric vehicles. Franz Geiger, a Northwestern University chemistry professor who worked on the study, said in a separate news release that there may be enough polymetallic nodules in an area of the Pacific Ocean called the Clarion-Clipperton Zone to meet global energy demands for decades after.
But Geiger also said that mining would have to be conducted in a way that did not remove oxygen for life forms in that part of the ocean. Companies conducted exploratory missions for deep-sea mining in the 1970s and 80s, he said, and recent research suggests that those missions may have had influences on marine life in the area for decades. “A few years ago, a team of marine biologists went back to those areas that were mined 40 years ago and found essentially no life,” Geiger said. “And then a few hundred meters over to the left and right, where the nodules were undamaged, plenty of life.”
12. What do we know about the new research
A. It questions whether oxygen exists in seawater.
B. It believes that the level of oxygen is higher in the deep sea.
C. It challenges the conventional view of how oxygen is produced.
D. It argues that oxygen is created only through photosynthesis.
13. What generates the oxygen under the sea according to the scientists
A. Hydrogen and seawater. B. Special rocks on the sea floor.
C. A kind of effective batteries. D. Marine plants and sunlight.
14. Why did Geiger mention the deep-sea mining in the 1970s and 80s
A. To emphasize the need to consult biologists before mining.
B. To call for more firms to learn from previous exploratory achievements
C. To remind the companies to avoid damaging the nodules when mining.
D. To encourage the biologists to monitor deep-sea life continuously.
15. What would be the most suitable title for the text
A. Mineral Resources Are Detected in the Pacific Ocean
B. Scientists Discover “Dark Oxygen” on the Sea Floor
C. “Polymetallic Nodules” Have Changed Undersea Landscape
D. “Dark Oxygen” Brings up a New Assumption on the Origin of Life

With one week to go before the Los Angeles Marathon, one of my knees was injured. The thought of missing the marathon in five days concened me far more than my physical pain. I had notjust given the marathon a small place in my life, it had become my life.
The good news was that after a thorough examination, nothing appeared to be permanently damaged. The first thing I asked the doctor was, “When will I be able to run again ” Remaining cautious, he explained that as soon as the swelling went down, I could do whatever I felt I could tolerate. Later that afternoon, my self-confidence began to return to normal even though my knee hadn’t. The injury damaged my body, but not my spirit.
The next day, I hobbled (跛行) into a local running store and asked if there were any marathons later in the year. With all of the training that I had put in, I was certain that I’d be back on the streets within a couple of months. “There aren’t any more marathons until the last part of November,” said the clerk. “Oh, wait. There is one smaller race next month:the Long Beach Marathon.” A ray of hope emerged. However, the Long Beach Marathon was only three and a half weeks away. Impossible. But, Aristotle once said, “Hope is a waking dream.” My dream was only three weeks away.
The next morning, I began a self-made training schedule unlike any you’ll read about in Runner’s World, and probably it’s the first time anyone has ever prepared for a marathon without running. I was fortunate enough to be working in a hospital fitness center that had a wide variety of stationary bikes, treadmills (跑步机) and free weights. They could actually help me to recover and practice.
Over the course of the next week, the swelling in my knee went down as my fitness level climbed. I was actually becoming fitter without putting in so much as a mile of running. After about two and a half weeks, I got the doctor’s approval to start running again.

1. 续写词数应为150左右;

【答案】The first day back out on the street was a challenge. My knee still felt a bit weak and every step seemed to test its strength. I started slowly, almost hesitantly. But as I moved forward, the familiar rhythm of running began to take over. I told myself to focus on my form and not push too hard. The wind blew gently against my face, as if encouraging me. I could feel my confidence growing with each step, even though it was a struggle at first.
When the race day arrived I was fit and motivated to run the race of a lifetime. I stood at the starting line, my heart full of excitement. As the gun went off, I took off with determination. The crowd’s cheers spurred me on. I ran smoothly, my knee holding up well. I thought about all the hard work and the setbacks I had overcome. With every mile, I felt stronger. I crossed the finish line with a sense of pride and accomplishment, knowing that I had beaten the odds.
