Unit 3 Celebrations Lesson 3 Memories of Christmas—高一英语北师大版(2019)必修第一册随堂小练
一、阅读理解
1. I looked at my beautiful Christmas tree and sighed. It was time. The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the comer of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights. I'd procrastinated long enough.
I got up, went to the garage and dragged all the boxes into the room. The garland (花环) was the first to take down. The branches looked naked(光秃秃的) already. I took the large decorations off next. They made a large pile on our bed. An hour later, our bed was covered with Christmas memories. Each pile contained an ornament along with its matching brothers and sisters from sets bought many years ago.
I prepared the boxes and carefully placed ornaments in their protective packaging, pausing every few minutes to admire a favorite. "Hey, little Santa!" I held the Santa from my childhood. "Thanks for being my friend for almost 50 years." He was a little ragged(衣着破烂的) but still gave me a flood of wonderful memories. "Until next year, my dear friend."
There was a collection of handmade ones. My children made in their first years of school, more than 20 years ago. Made by tiny hands, they are far from perfect in design, but every year they go on my memory tree—memories of young giggles(咯咯笑) on Christmas morning and a smiling face when they handed them to me when I came home from work. "Look what we made, Daddy!"
"Oh! It is beautiful. Let's find a special spot on the tree for it." Every year since, they are displayed.
A few hours after I started, the filled boxes were back in the garage and the room was vacuumed(用真 空吸尘器清扫) and I sat staring at a barren(空荡荡的) corner. The room seemed so empty. It took me two days of work to assemble (收集) and decorate my tree, but only a few hours to take it apart.
My tree is like a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be tom down quickly.
Every year I have to put my tree away, but not my marriage or friendships. I take great care of those. They get to glow in the comer of my life for as long as I live. I get to analyze my tree and find memories for a few weeks every year. I can do the same with the loves in my life every day. Take great care of your friendships and your marriage. Once they come down, they aren't as easy to put back together as a Christmas tree. Stand them in that special spot in the comer of your heart and admire their glow.

2. Girls should take part in competitive sport to build confidence, and the leaders of a group of girls' schools will argue this week. Helen Fraser, director of the Girls' Day School Trust( GDST), will tell the group that sport can help girls deal with failure.
"All girls, not just the sporty ones, should take physical exercise", Ms Fraser says. Research that girls are far less active than boys is worrying, she argues. Ms Fraser will tell the group that she supports "sport for all" That's why I love it when our schools have A,B, C and D teams and beyond," she says.
The GDST draws on research from the Women's Sport and Fitness Foundation which suggests only a quarter of girls in England meet basic levels of activity each week. One in five girls do no activity at all, twice the proportion (比例) of boys, the research suggests.
Ms Fraser says other research suggests that more than 80% of women business leaders played sports while growing up. She uses the examples of former US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who once was a skater and tennis player, and former head of the International Monetary Fund, Christine Lagarde, who once was in the French national swimming team. Ms Fraser says Olympic medallists like Jessica Ennis and Katherine Grainger are excellent role models for young women but says women's sport needs more money and more news reports.
Valerie Dunsford, former head of Sheffield High School for Girls, part of the GDST, said it was important to offer a large number of sports to attract different types of girls. "Not everyone wants to be out playing hockey (曲棍球)," said Ms Dunsford.

3. Halloween used to be a time for kids. In the past, the festival meant houses decorated with jack-o-lanterns, cool costumes (化装服) handmade by mums, and going door to door asking for candy, saying "trick or treat".
However, you wouldn't have seen any of these if you were at this year's Halloween events in Shibuya, Tokyo, from Oct. 27 to 30. Halloween in Japan has become a big party for adults, who dress up in costumes and hang around having fun taking pictures. In other words, this festival is no longer just a time for kids.
As USA Today editor Bruce Horovitz wrote, "Adults have slowly been stealing Halloween from kids." But "steal" is not quite the word, since the adults of today all used to be kids themselves. These grown-ups still manage to keep the tradition of dressing up alive, however, even if they're too old to knock on strangers' doors for candy now.
Some companies even encourage their employees to wear costumes to work so they can relax and enjoy their share of the festival fun. "You can wear whatever you want and not be judged," Denise Delahorne of DDB Worldwide, an advertising company, told Forbes when asked why adults are so into Halloween compared to other holidays. "There's no pressure (压力) to it. You don't have to travel or deal with relatives. There's no holiday pressure to find a date if you are single."
But here comes the interesting part: As the "adult Halloween" industry gets bigger and bigger, movie theatres, drink sellers and haunted houses are starting to aim (瞄准) at adult customers only. There's even an Halloween trade show in the US every year that you can't even enter if you're under 16.
That isn't good news for kids, but on the bright side, at least young people can still get free candy. And what could be better than that
1.Why are adults so fond of Halloween
A.They would be treated like kids.
B.They don't need to care for their relatives.
C.They feel happy and relaxed during Halloween.
D.They can get free goods from the "adult Halloween" industry.
2.What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 4 refer to
A. Work. B. Halloween. C. Being single. D. Another holiday.
3.What did some companies encourage their workers to do during Halloween
A.Wear cool costumes to work.

C.Knock on strangers' doors for candy.
D.Decorate their houses with jack-o-lanterns.

2.词义猜测题。根据文章第一段中的"The New Year was a week old and my tree still stood in the corner of our room with its collection of memories proudly displayed in a shower of colorful lights."可知,新年已经过去一周了,“我”的圣诞树还没有被拆走。“我”已经拖延得够久了。故选D。
3.推理判断题。根据文章倒数第二段"My tree is like a good marriage or a great friendship. Like the tree, they take a long time to assemble and decorate with memories, but can be torn down quickly."

Some companies even encourage their employees to wear costumes to work so they can relax可知,为了让职员放松,公司鼓励职员穿各种化装服去公司。故选A项。

When my kids were young we bought them two pet parrots(鹦鹉). These beautiful, white birds would whistle all through the day. We had a big cage for them with branches(树枝), toys, and a mirror, plus food and water dishes. We couldn't let them loose in the house because of our cats, but they didn't seem to be content in their cage or so I thought.
One day when the sun was awakening the earth and the air had turned warm, I opened the window to let the wind in. The songs of lots of different birds filled the air and our two parrots whistled with excitement. I went over to their cage to replace their water, but as soon as I opened the door one of them flew out and headed for the window. He crashed into the glass, fell over onto the sofa, fell back up and then started to fly around the living room. The cats chased(追逐) after him, hoping for a quick meal. The kids screamed(尖叫) and I rushed to save him. It took several minutes to stop the cats from catching the bird, and get him safely back in his cage. After that day, however, I always felt a bit sorry for my parrots. I knew that no matter how comfortable their cage was, they still wanted to fly.
Many of us live in cages of our own making. We close our minds, lock away our hearts, and limit our lives. We refuse to see the love that lies within us. We sit in our cages day after day and never dare to once open the door.
I don't want to waste my days sitting bored in a cage. I want to fly to new heights of love every single day. I want to go fast through the sky on wings of kindness and joy. I want to ride on the winds of love and help everyone to do the same. Don't stay stuck in your own cage then. Let yourself fly!

A.Because they could be eaten by the cats.
B.Because they were too young to fly in the air.
C. Because they could see themselves in the mirror.

A. couldn't stand up after crashing into the glass
B.attempted to fly out of the window
C. played a hide-and-seek game with cats
D. frightened the kids to scream loudly
3.Why did the writer feel sorry for parrots
A. Because they disliked living in a cage.
B. Because their cage wasn't comfortable for them.
C. Because they couldn't fly freely like other birds.
D. Because their enemies were waiting to kill them.
4.What does the third paragraph suggest
A. We try to protect ourselves from danger.
B.We like to make a living all by ourselves.
C. We do not dare to speak out our love.
D. We often put ourselves in a life cage.
5.Celebrating Czech traditions
Have you ever seen the 300-year anniversary(周年纪念) of a village To me, it is so amazing that this village, named By i ky, which is located in Bohemia in the Czech Republic, has suffered blizzards(暴风雪) and wars for all this time, but has still kept so attractive.
Unlike transportation you'd find in Prague such as the underground or tram(有轨电车), the most common way to get around in the countryside is by bike, as it's a lot more convenient. So on Saturday morning I left home on a bike ride with my host family. After an 8-kilometer journey, we finally arrived at the village.
There was a road that led straight into the center of the village. Many stalls selling pizza, beer and ice cream were by the roadside. You could hear guitar music coming from the other side of the road, where an outdoor stage stood on a large area of meadows(草地).
When the performance from the guitarists finished, a group of children wearing traditional costumes went on stage. As the crowd applauded loudly, the children were divided into three groups. A group of older kids playing different musical instruments stood on the left side, a group performing typical Czech dances was on the right, and a choir sang beautifully in the center.
Many of those present were relatives of the children, and we were there because my sister was a member of the dancing group. On the edge of the grassland, there were girls riding horses.
The end of the road led to a circled space, where the city hall stood in the middle, surrounded by a circle of colorful cottages. In front of the houses there were also many markets and a radio station reporting on the event.
So this is what a typical village celebration looks like, with markets, food and performances from traditional Czech culture, which was quite different from festivals in big cities. Czech people value their history, so there will always be parties to celebrate a place's existence or an important person in history. There are no high buildings in these villages, but people still like to go there to spend their weekends because of the peaceful environment. I guess that is what life really means.

6. There is a day every year that most people look forward to because of a cake, balloons, presents and sometimes a party. Yes, this is your birthday. A "birthday" is described as the name given to the date of the annual event of a person's birth. It is a global tradition for people to celebrate this specific day.
In the beginning, people did not have birthday celebrations, because people did not keep very good birth records. They weren't even sure what year they were born in. And when people started to celebrate the birthday, there was no tradition of bringing gifts, and guests attending the birthday celebrations would bring good wishes for the birthday person. However, if a guest did bring gifts it was considered to be a good sign for the person of honour. Later, flowers became quite popular as birthday gifts.
Nowadays, different cultures have their own birthday celebrations. In Chinese culture, elders and family members gather around the one-year-old child and bring objects such as books, dolls and coins. It is believed that the child's future career will depend on the object that he or she picks. The Chinese consider a child a year old at birth. In Japan, people's 3rd, 5th, and 7th birthdays are the most important, because they will get to participate in the annual Seven-Five-Three Festival. Participants usually visit shrines (神殿) to show thanks for their health and strength.
Some in Britain still practice an ancient way of celebrating birthdays by placing thimbles (顶针) and coins in the cake. The person who gets the coin will be wealthy and the one who gets the thimble will never marry. Ireland has a funny way of celebrating birthdays. It is believed that it is for good luck that a child is lifted upside down and gets "bumped (撞)" on the floor! These bumps will depend on how old the child is. An extra bump is also added for good luck.

2. The cultures of the East and the West are really different from each other a lot. This is because the culture systems are two separate ones on the whole.
The origin of the Eastern culture is mainly from two countries: China and India. Both of the two cultures are developed by rivers—the Yellow River and the Ganges River. They helped the two cultures develop for centuries and form their own styles.
When the two mother rivers gave birth to the Eastern culture, another famous culture was up on the Mesopotamian Plain(美索不达米亚平原)—the Mesopotamian Civilization. This civilization later on developed into the cultures of Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome. And these two are well-known as the base of the European culture. Like the Chinese culture, the European culture also crossed waters. When the British settled down in America, their culture went with them over the Atlantic Ocean. So the American culture doesn't have much difference from the European culture.
At the same time, some other differences add to the cultural differences. Take the language system for example. In the East, most languages belong to the pictographic(象形文字的) language while the western languages are mostly based on the Latin system. Other causes like differences between different races count as well. But what's more, due to the far distance and the steep areas between the East and the West, the two cultures seldom communicate until recent centuries. So they grew up totally in their own ways with almost no interference from the other.
The differences are everywhere. They are obvious and make people's ways of thinking and their views of the world different. But different cultures make the world of the 21st century more colorful. The cultural differences should not be the obstacle (障碍) to the civilization of human beings. It ought to be the driving force of our going farther.

2. In October, I told the eight-year-olds in the class I teach in Pompton Lakes, New Jersey, about my plan. "Since all of you have done extra jobs around the house to earn some money," I said, "then well buy food for a Thanksgiving dinner for someone who might not have a nice dinner otherwise."
I watched them while they walked up and down the supermarket. "Flowers!" Kristine cried. The group rushed towards the holiday plants.
"You can't eat flowers,"—It was wiser to use any extra money to buy something that could be turned into meals.
"But Mrs Sherlock," came the begging voice, "we want flowers."
Defeated finally, I put a pot of "funny" purple mums in the cart full of foods. "She'll like this one." The children agreed.
An organization had given us the name and address of a needy grandmother who had lived alone for many years. We finally pulled up in front of a small house. A slightly-built woman with a weary face came to the door to welcome us.
My little group ran to get the foods. As each box was carried in, the old woman kept on saying "Thanks." — much to her visitors' pleasure. When Amy put the mums on the counter, the woman seemed surprised. She's wishing it was a bag of rice, I thought.
We returned to the car. As we fastened our seat belts, we could see the kitchen window. The woman inside waved goodbye, then turned and walked across the room, past the turkey, past the goods, straight to the mums. She put her face in them. When she raised her head, there was a smile on her lips. She was transformed (转变) before our eyes.
The children were quiet. At that moment, they had seen for themselves the power they have to make another's life better. The children had sensed that sometimes a person needs a pot of funny purple flowers on a dark November day.

D.All the money the children earned was transformed to food.
3. My husband and I recently went to Disney World with our three children. We had a wonderful time. Besides, I experienced something that left a deep impression on me.
Our children were excited about the attraction where children could drive the cars. They were so delighted that I decided to stand beside the track to get pictures of everyone as they drove past on the track.
As I waited for them to drive by, I noticed a car with a father and his son who was about 7 years old. They rolled down the hill at the beginning, but suddenly the car stopped. The young driver looked nervous, "I can't do it." His father quietly said, "Yes, you can."
"No, I can't!"
"Yes, you can, son."
The little guy was almost in tears, "I can't!" With the deep patience, the father said, "Son, you can do this. I'm going to help you." A moment later, with the father helping his son, they two went smoothly (顺利地) on their way down the track.
The scene brought a tear to my eye and it reminded me of my dear father. Just like that little boy's father, my father used to say the same words to me. Every time things got hard or when I experienced setbacks along the way, he would say, "Michelle, you can do this. I'm going to help you."
Time and time again, the words greatly encouraged me on the journey. When I'm aware that I can't do things under my own power, the words—Yes, you can. —come beside me and give me wisdom and strength. As I benefited a lot from them, I often tell my children never to say "No, I can't." easily when they meet something difficult.
