探究一：过去进行时的构成及其肯定式、否定式和疑问式及简略答语（课本110页到111页）。
1. 基本概念：过去进行时表示在过去某一时刻或一段时间内正在进行的动作。这一特定的过去时间除有上下文暗示以外，一般用时间状语来表示，如at this / that time yesterday, at that time, at eight(nine …) o’clock yesterday morning, from 6 a.m. to 9 a.m. last Monday, when+一般过去时的时间状语从句等
2. 结构： was / were ( not ) + 动词-ing
3. 句式：
肯定式：I/He/She/It was working. We/You/They/ were working.
否定式：I/He/She/It w ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )as not working. We/You/They/ were not working.
疑问式和简略回答：

探究二：过去进行时和一般过去时的区别：
一般过去时：表示过去某个时间发生过的__________或存在的_____________。
如：I wrote a letter last night. (信写完了)
过去进行时：过去___________或_____________正在进行的_____________。
如：I was writing a letter last night. (信不一定写完)
探究三：过去进行时的用法：
用法：
只有延续性动词才能用于过去进行时，短暂性动词不可以，它通常与when引导的时间状语从句连用，当一个动作发生时，另一个动作正在进行。
如：I was cleaning the room when Tom called me.
过去进行时还可以表示两个过去的动作同时进行，这时可用while来连接两个从句。
如：I was watching TV while my mother was cooking yesterday evening.
when和while的区别：
when和while都可表示“当……的时候”，引导时间状语从句。你知道两者在过去进行时中的用法有什么不同吗？
请仔细观察下面的例句，然后补全空格中的内容。

主句的动作是持续性的，而从句动作是短暂性的，此时用_______引导时间状语从句，主句用_____________时态，从句用一般过去时态。

主句和从句的动 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )作在过去的某时刻或某段时间同时发生，而且动作都是持续性的，此时用_________引导从句，而且主句和从句都用_____________时态。
表示“当……的时候”时，如果后面连接的动词为 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )延续性动词，则多用while，而when通常与短暂性动词连用（也可与延续性动词连用）；当后面的句子表示一种状态时，两者可以互换。
如：While I was b ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )uying a newspaper, my dog ran away. =I was buying a newspaper when my dog ran away.
I was very short when/while I was in primary school.
如果while前后的句子都是进行时态（现在进行时或过去进行时），while可译为“与此同时”。如：I was sleeping while my mother was cooking breakfast.
当while前后的句子描述的情况相对或相反时，while可译为“而”，while更强调并列的对比而非转折。如: I like Chinese food while she likes French food.
当when引导的带有短暂 ( http: / / www.21cnjy.com )性动词的从句与进行时态的主句连用时，when 有时候可以根据情况译为“突然，就在这时”。如：I was sleeping when the door opened.
