一、阅读理解
The United States of America was founded in 1776 after the 13 independent American states rose up against the ruling British, defeated them in the American Revolutionary War, and signed the Declaration of Independence, the document which declared the creation of the new country.
The men who led the revolution, drafted the Declaration of Independence, and wrote the first American laws are known as "founding fathers". Benjamin Franklin, whose picture is on the US 100-dollar note, was appointed to prepare the Declaration that was eventually signed by the other founding fathers.
Franklin was born in 1706 in Boston to a soap maker named Josiah Franklin. His father could not afford full schooling for all his children, but Benjamin loved books and worked in his elder brother's printing business before starting a newspaper called the Pennsylvania Gazette in 1729. He wrote and drew cartoons for the newspaper. In addition, he worked to improve living conditions in the city: introducing street lights, cleaning the roads and building libraries. In the 1740s, Franklin retired from his newspaper and turned to science with great success. He was a very smart man and his work on electricity, including the "kite experiment" which confirmed the nature of lightning, made him famous throughout the world.
Franklin earned the title of the "First American" for his efforts to unite the 13 American states, and to win their independence. This part of the story starts in London. He was sent to the city to persuade the British to treat the American states more fairly. It was here that he began interacting with important political thinkers and activists of the time and developing his own political ideas.
Following his return to America in 1761 he became much more active in American politics and in the battle against British rule.
After the United States of America was established, Franklin held several important positions such as the first United States Postmaster General, Ambassador to France and President of Pennsylvania. He is also famous today for his wise sayings, including "a penny saved is a penny earned" and "an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure".

5.The Boy Made it!
One Sunday, Nicholas, a teenager, went skiing at Sugarloaf Mountain in Maine. In the early afternoon, when he was planning to go home, a fierce snowstorm swept into the area. Unable to see far, he accidentally turned off the path. Before he knew it, Nicholas was lost, all alone! He didn't have food, water, a phone, or other supplies. He was getting colder by the minute.
Nicholas had no idea where he was. He tried not to panic. He thought about all of the survival shows he had watched on TV. It was time to put the tips he had learned to use.
He decided to stop skiing. There was a better chance of someone finding him if he stayed put. The first thing he did was to find shelter from the freezing wind and snow. If he didn't, his body temperature would get very low, which could quickly kill him.
Using his skis, Nicholas built a snow cave. He gathered a huge mass of snow and dug out a hole in the middle. Then he piled branches on top of himself, like a blanket, to stay as warm as he could.
By that evening, Nicholas was really hungry. He ate snow and drank water from a nearby stream so that his body wouldn't lose too much water. Not knowing how much longer he could last, Nicholas did the only thing he could—he huddled(蜷缩) in his cave and slept.
The next day, Nicholas went out to look for help, but he couldn't find anyone. He followed his tracks and returned to the snow cave, because without shelter, he could die that night. On Tuesday, Nicholas went out again to find help. He had walked for about a mile when a volunteer searcher found him. After two days stuck in the snow, Nicholas was saved.
Nicholas might not have survived this snowstorm had it not been for TV. He had often watched Grylls' survival show Man vs. Wild. That's where he learned the tips that saved his life. In each episode(一期节目) of Man vs. Wild. Grylls is abandoned in a wild area and has to find his way out.
When Grylls heard about Nicholas' amazing deeds, he was super impressed that Nicholas had made it since he knew better than anyone how hard Nicholas had to work to stay alive.

6. "They tell me that you'd like to make a statue(塑像) of me—is that correct, Miss Vinnie Ream "
The deep, gentle voice helped calm the nervous girl. Asking a favor of the President of the United States was no casual matter, especially for a seventeen-year-old girl.
"Yes, sir," she replied, her dark eyes meeting his. "I wouldn't have dared ask you, but my teacher, Mr. Mills, says I am ready. I plan to make it in an admirable manner."
President Lincoln smiled. "Painters, sculptors—they've all tried to make the best of this ordinary face, but I'm afraid there's not much hope. What did you have in mind, Miss Ream A bust(半身像) "
Before Vinnie could say yes, the President hurried on, a shade of apology in his voice.
"Of course—I shouldn't have asked. A full-length pose would be much too big a project for a young woman your size."
Vinnie's face turned red. She realized she looked like a child, with her tiny figure. "Small does not mean weak, sir," she defended herself. "I was born in the country of Wisconsin. I've driven teams of horses and carried water. Making a full-length clay(粘土) figure would not exhaust my strength—and that is what I intend to do!"
The President's eyes, brightened at her show of spirit. "Sorry, madam, I have underestimated you as I didn't know your background."
But his smile faded as he rubbed his beard with bony fingers, in thought. "Miss Ream," he sighed, "I'd like to let you do it, but as you know, we are in the middle of a war. How could I possibly take the time to pose for a sculpture now I hardly have a minute to myself."
Vinnie glanced around and noted the size of his office. "I work quickly," she said. Her voice was soft but confident as she pointed to the corner near the windows. "If I were to bring my clay here and work for three hours every afternoon, I could complete most of the project while you are at your desk."
The President seemed to consider her idea seriously. He got up and shook Vinnie's hand warmly, "I've heard that you are a talented young woman, and I have found you charming and intelligent as well. I cannot make my decision immediately, but you will hear from me soon."
The very next day, Vinnie received an invitation from the President.

10.阅读下面短文,根据其内容写一篇60词左右的内容概要。
My Sporting Hero: Roger Federer
Almost every sportsperson who has reached the top of their field was inspired by an athlete who came before them. Often, it is one from their own sport, but sometimes that inspiration can come from an entirely different discipline. Scotland footballer Jen Beattie tells us about her sporting hero: Roger Federer.
From an early age, I have been a big tennis fan. I have always loved watching Wimbledon, and when I was growing up, Roger Federer was the men's champion every year. He had some impressive finals—the one against Andy Roddick in 2009 in particular—but he always seemed to prevail. Federer was ridiculous at the time, winning 12 Grand Slams between 2003 and 2007. And I could just watch that backhand of his inaction over and over again.
I love the way Federer carries himself on the court. His calmness is something I have always admired. In my football career, I have played in big, important matches for my club and particularly for my country. When I am walking onto a football pitch, I know I have the full team behind me. I always have ten other players who have my back to help me find solutions. Federer just has to figure them out on his own, which is very different.
There are any number of variables you can throw into the mix when examining what makes a sporting legend. A big one for me is the quality of the opponents you have to overcome. To win 20Grand Slam titles in the arguably greatest era of men's tennis, as well as reaching another 11 finals, marks Federer out as a legend.
After Federer won Wimbledon in 2012, the Slams started to dry up for him. He lost the 2015 US Open final to Novak Djokovic. In 2016, time seemed to be catching up with him, with knee and back injuries ruining his season. At that stage, the chances of Federer returning to top form seemed remote. And yet there he was in 2017, winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon, and then as the defending champion in Melbourne in 2018.
That belief and confidence he must have had within himself to deep going, and even change little aspects of his game to not just prolong his career but actually improve as a player, is so impressive. Not many people look to do that when the end is in sight.
Perhaps that is a natural thing some top athletes will figure out as they go along. Federer, however, has done that on an unbelievable level. To be 40 and still able to operate at the level he is now is a testament to his greatness.

一、阅读理解
1. In 1812, the year Charles Dickens was born, there were 66 novels published in Britain. People had been writing novels for a century—most experts date the first novel to Robinson Crusoe in 1719—but nobody wanted to do it professionally. The steam-powered printing press was still in its early stages; the literacy (识字) rate in England was under 50%. Many works of fiction appeared without the names of the authors, often with something like "By a lady". Novels, for the most part, were looked upon as silly, immoral or just plain bad.
In 1870, when Dickens died, the world mourned him as its first professional writer and publisher, famous and beloved, who had led an explosion in both the publication of novels and their readership and whose characters from Oliver Twist to Tiny Tim—were held up as moral touchstones. Today Dickens' greatness is unchallenged. Removing him from the pantheon(名人堂) of English literature would make about as much sense as the Louvre selling off the Mona Lisa.
How did Dickens get to the top For all the feelings readers attach to stories, literature is a numbers game, and the test of time is extremely difficult to pass. Some 60,000 novels were published during the Victorian age, from 1837 to 1901; today a casual reader might be able to name a half-dozen of them. It's partly true that Dickens' style of writing attracted audiences from all walks of life. It's partly that his writings rode a wave of social, political and scientific progress. But it's also that he rewrote the culture of literature and put himself at the center. No one will ever know what mix of talent, ambition, energy and luck made Dickens such a distinguished writer. But as 200th anniversary of his birth approaches, it is possible—and important for our own culture —to understand how he made himself a lasting one.
1. Which of the following best describes British novels in the 18th century
A. They were difficult to understand. B. They were popular among the rich.
C. They were seen as nearly worthless. D. They were written mostly by women.
2. Dickens is compared with the Mona Lisa in the text to stress _____.
A. his reputation in France B. his interest in modern art
C. his success in publication D. his importance in literature
3. What is the author's purpose in writing the text
A. To remember a great writer. B. To introduce an English novel.
C. To encourage studies on culture. D. To promote values of the Victorian age.
2. As a teacher we all have those memories of students—we wondered if we were able to teach or reach those students who had a need to get out of their seats every five minutes or so.
I recently received an e-mail from one such student, Paco. Paco's e-mail brought back my memories of one particular class:
It was our high school's first year to change our classes to 80 minutes long instead of the traditional 40 minutes. On this particular day, I was being observed by two college professors. Of course, I was proud of the fact that the class was conducted entirely in Spanish and the students felt comfortable expressing themselves in Spanish.
On that day, Paco came running through the door with a toasted cheese sandwich in hand. "Senora Mike, I'm hungry and I hope you don't mind if I just quickly eat this great toasted cheese sandwich." I said, "Go ahead, Paco." Paco sat down and finished his sandwich. Paco had then noticed our two visitors. Of course, our two visitors noticed Paco the minute he ran through the door.
The lesson was going along quite well, and all the students were working in their groups. Suddenly, Paco raised his hand and said, "Senora, esta lloviendo en mis pantalones."("Mrs. Mike, it is raining in my pants.") Then, being Paco's Spanish teacher, I understood what he wanted. I knew that it was his way of requesting to go to the bathroom. You could just imagine the laughter from the other students.
I always wonder just how much Spanish Paco learned in that class, but I know he learned more than just Spanish based on the e-mail he recently wrote to me:
I know I was a handful but you actually cared. You knew I had potentialup...evenup...gh I messed up a lot, you never gave up... I'm deeply grateful to you for everything you taught me about Spanish. My attitudelife...periencelife...tick with me the rest of my life...
You see, Paco was my student ten years ago.
1. What do we learn about Paco
A. He did well in his lessons. B. He didn't behave well enough.

A. How to teach a successful lesson. B. How to get on well with students.
C. A teacher's influence on students. D. Students' attitude to their teachers.
3. Like many people, I have no clear idea about heroes. At some point, we all wonder if we need a hero and what a hero really is.
Although there are a lot of differences in cultures, heroes around the world generally share a number of characteristics which give us courage and make us want to learn from them.
A hero does something worth talking about. A hero has a special story to tell and people think highly of him. But a hero is not just a person with great fame.
A hero has power larger than himself. Some people want to live like a hero. And they have to experience life with new and further meaning. A sure test for would-be heroes is what or whom they serve. What do they want to live and die for If their answer suggests they serve only their own fame, they may be famous persons but not heroes.
A hero has a vision from the mountaintop. He has power to move people. He creates new possibility. Without Gandhi, India might still be part of Britain. Without Martin Luther King, Americans might take different buses, eat in different restaurants, go for walks in different parks, and shop in different stores because of the different colours of their skin.
There might be changes in society without a hero, but the speed of the changes would be rather slow. Thanks to heroes in history, they made the society develop so rapidly.
1.According to this passage, a hero is a person who always _____.
A.gives us courage
B.thinks highly of others
C.shares great fame
D.stands on the mountaintop

3.Black people in America might _____ without Martin Luther King.
A.shop at the white's store
B.drive buses with the white
C.take walks in the white's park
D.eat in restaurants without the white
4.What can we learn from the passage
A.We don't need heroes anymore at some point now.
B.Heroes are all the same in different cultures.
C.People get power from heroes to move to a new place.
D.Our society has developed faster because of heroes in history.

一、阅读理解
1950s.He1950s.Heing in September 1930, Yuan Longping began his career as an agricultural researcher in the 1950s.He often said in interviews that he was driven to increase rice output in China because of the hunger he had witnessed. "My lifetime pursuit is to ensure all people stay away from hunger," he once said. In the decades that followed, Yuan was associated with some of the most important breakthroughs in his field.
As early as 1964, Yuan theorized that a male-sterile(雄性不育的) grain could be crossed with other plants to boost yields(产量),but it was not until 1973 that he developed the first hybrid rice thanks to the discovery of a wild rice species that made the breakthrough possible. Mass cultivation of the crop began in 1976 and proved key to China being able to feed one-fifth of the world's population with just 9 percent of its limited land.
A In 1995, he produced a two-line hybrid rice and was tasked by the government to improve yields still further. He later developed a single line hybrid rice. In 1996, the agriculture ministry tasked Yuan to start a program to breed "super rice", plants of much higher yields.
A Various hybrid rice has yields that tend to be about 20 percent higher than those of traditional rice, and have been planted in 16 million hectares, or more than half of China's rice acreage. China could feed 70 million more people thanks to Yuan's research.
Yuan was awarded the World Food Prize in 2004, for "pioneering research that helped transform China from food shortage to food security within three decades.

According to the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Centre, about 8 million hectares overseas has been planted.
In his later years, he was also involved in research in China and Dubai into growing crops in seawater.

Once, a young school boy was caught in a fire accident in his school and was assumed that he would not live. His mother was told that he was sure to die, for the terrible fire had destroyed the lower half of his body. Even if he were to survive, he would be lame throughout his life.
But the brave boy did not want to die, nor did he want to be lame. Much to the amazement of the doctor, he did survive. But unfortunately from his waist down, he had no motor ability. His thin legs just hung there, lifeless. Eventually he left the hospital. But his determination to walk was unshakable. At home, when he was not in bed, he had to stay in a wheelchair. One day, he threw himself from the chair and pulled himself across the grass, dragging his legs behind him. He reached the fence, raised himself up and then began dragging himself along the fence, firmly determined. He did this every day, with faith in himself that he would be able to walk unaided. With his iron determination, he did develop the ability to stand up, then to walk on and off, then to walk by himself and then to run.
He began to walk to school, and then run to school, enjoying the joy of running. Later in college he was on the track team.
In February 1934, in New York City's Madison Square Garden, this young man who was not expected to survive, who would surely never walk, and who could never hope to run—this determined young man, Glenn Cunningham, ran the world's fastest mile.

The books were all about British people and British places. Webster wanted books that would mean more to American children. So he wrote three books that used American examples—a grammar book, a spelling book, and a reader. These books were very popular, and millions of them were sold.
Webster was interested in changing the spellings of words. He wanted words to be spelled the way they were pronounced. For example, he thought the word "head" should be spelled "hed", and the word "laugh" should be spelled "laf ". People liked Webster's suggestions.
However, few words were actually changed. One group of words that were changed were words in which an unpronounced "u" followed an "o". That is why Americans write "color" and "labor", while the British write "colour" and "labour".
With the money he made from his books, Webster was able to write. It was the first American English dictionary, published in 1828. Webster's dictionary had over 70,000 words and gave the meaning and origin of each. To this day, Webster's work is the example that most dictionaries of American English follow.
