Thomas Coryat was not one of those famous explorers who found new trade routes or mapped unexplored territory. But in his time, he was an extremely well- known traveller and writer. His writings about his tours opened the eyes of many readers to the geography and customs of other countries:
Born in England in 1577, Coryat was educated at Winchester College and Oxford. Not long after he finished his education, he was employed by Prince Henry as a royal(皇家的)entertainer. This is evidence of his intelligence and sense of humour, which later became more widely known in his travel writings.
In 1608, Coryat started a long tour of Europe. The book he published in 1611 gave a lively picture of European life at the time. His book was extremely popular, partly because people were very curious about life in other countries. They also preferred reading about someone else’s exciting explorations, since travel was difficult and dangerous at the time.
In 1612 Coryat started another tour. This time he eventually travelled to the eastern Mediterranean, Persia and India. He sent home detailed letters describing his experiences and observations. These were published while he was still abroad. If he had lived longer, he would certainly have published a book about this trip, but his life was cut short by illness in 1617.
Not only were Coryat’s writings entertaining, but they also influenced society in unexpected ways. People say that he brought the table fork to the attention of English society, and that he introduced the word “umbrella” into the English language. At about this time, rich people began to send their sons to Europe to see great works of art and history. Today, historians call this kind of journey “the Grand Tour”, and they think that the educational tour tradition partly began because of Coryat’s books.

In 2022, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)announced it would let some hearing aids be sold over-the-counter for the first time, a move that will make the devices much more widely available and, in all likelihood, significantly cheaper.
It’s a move that has been increasingly important, as hearing loss is expected to rise sharply in the coming ten years. The World Health Organization warns that by 2030, nearly 630 million people worldwide will suffer from hearing loss. By 2050, that could jump to 900 million.
The act comes with some limitations. Devices for severe (重度的) hearing loss and those intended for use on children under the age of 18 will still require a prescription (处方). But for the millions who suffer from mild to moderate (轻度到中度的) hearing loss, picking up a hearing aid could be about as easy as picking up a pair of reading glasses at the drugstore.
They won’t be quite that cheap, of course, but they will likely cost less than today’s hearing aids. The FDA estimated the price of those devices could be cut in half once the rule takes effect.
“I seriously believe that we will see a significant reduction in prices for consumers with mild to moderate hearing loss,” said Blake Cadwell, founder and CEO of Soundly, a site that allows people to compare and buy hearing aids online. “Expect simple products like the Bose B1 hearing aid to go on sale for $899 and more expensive devices to sell for $1,500. In the long term, we may see even lower prices.”
“Hearing loss is an important public health issue that affects the ability of millions of Americans to effectively communicate in their daily life,” said FDA Commissioner Robert M. Califf, MD. “Establishing this new rule will allow people with mild to moderate hearing loss to have convenient access to safe, effective, and affordable hearing aids from their neighborhood store or online.”
8. How does the author support his idea in paragraph 2
A. By providing data.
B By giving examples.
C. By stating arguments.
D. By making comparisons.
9. What can be inferred about the new rule
A. It limits online sales of hearing aids.
B. It requires no prescription for all types of devices.
C. It primarily aims to discourage people from using hearing aids.
D. It directly benefits people over 18 with mild to moderate hearing loss.
10. What is Blake Cadwell’s attitude toward the future price reduction of hearing aids
A. Reserved. B. Confident. C. Uncertain. D. Concerned.
11. Which can be the most suitable title for the text
A. Consumer Enthusiasm: The Rising Demand for Hearing Aids.
B. Over- the- Counter Hearing Aids: Critics’ Warning of the Risks
C. Accessibility Concerns: The True Cost of FDA’s Hearing Aid Changes
D. Affordable Over-the-Counter Hearing Aids: FDA’s Game- Changing Move

133 students between the ages of 14-18 took part in an experiment run by researchers from the University of Oxford. Unlike most countries worldwide, in the UK 16-year-old students can decide to stop their math education. This situation allowed the team to study whether this specific lack of math education in students coming from a similar environment could impact brain development.
The study found that students who didn’t study math had a lower amount of an important chemical for brain plasticity (可塑性), gamma-aminobutyric acid (γ-氨基丁酸), in a key brain region that impacts memory, learning, reasoning, and more. Moreover, the amount of this brain chemical successfully predicted changes in math performance around 19months later. Notably, the researchers did not find differences in the brain chemical before the teens stopped studying math.
Psychologist (心理学家) Raquel Bild-Libbin explains that the chemical the study is analyzing will help teens in their future in ways we haven’t even fully understood yet. “The role of brain plasticity has made incredible achievements in the area of research. It is being applied in many areas of interest such as mindfulness, anxiety, anger control, and now in education. We never imagined the brain structures could be changed in anyway,” she says.
In addition, the chemical will help teens “develop better interpersonal relationships (人际关系), learn to control emotions and to be able to achieve higher educational goals that lead to better job opportunities and increase socioeconomic levels.” The study’s analysis corroborates this, suggesting that math education is related to “educational progress, employment, mental and physical health, and financial success.”
Karen Aronian, a college professor, says she can’t think of a single career that doesn’t use math and reasoning in some way. As she mentions, math is excellent for the brain, has real-world applications, and improves problem-solving skills. She also calls it a “super shame” when high schools start backing off the math requirements in later teenage years.
12. What enabled the researchers to conduct the study according to the text
A. The students’ decision to discontinue math education.
B. The students’ desire to develop learning capabilities.
C. The students’ different cultural backgrounds.
D. The students’ slow brain development.
13. What is the finding of the study
A. Lack of math education may harm teen brain development.
B. Memory and reasoning skills can predict math performance.
C. Anxiety and anger have damaging effects on brain plasticity.
D. The amount of gamma-aminobutyric acid in brain varies with age.
14. What does the underlined word “corroborates” in paragraph 4 probably mean
A. Doubts. B. Ignores. C. Supports. D. Confuses.
15. What does Karen Aronian think of high schools’ dropping math requirements
A. It is a way to relieve student anxiety.
B. It makes no difference to financial success.
C. It is beneficial for. students’ physical health.
D. It creates a challenge to career development.

“Oh my gosh, it looks so good on you,” my best friend shouted out. “That color suits you, and I’m getting it for you for your birthday. After all, it’s in two weeks!”
I had gone bathing suit shopping with my best friend. We wound up buying bathing suits, and the topic of going on a diet came up. The only reason for going on one would be to lose a little bit of our “baby fat”. I thought all the guys would like me if I was pretty and thin.
So I decided to stick to a diet even though it would be hard because I am a chocoholic (巧克力狂). I had always been a big girl. Not necessarily fat, but tall with a strong build. I played many sports and reduced my dinner servings. I had a desire to eat ice cream, but whenever I looked at beauty magazines and my bathing suit, the desire disappeared quickly.
My mom noticed when I dropped five pounds. She told me to stop because I could harm myself. I promised her I’d stop, but I couldn’t. I started getting praised by my schoolmates. I wore the same clothes which kept getting baggier and baggier. My gym teacher questioned me about my noticeable weight loss. I explained to her that it was the result of exercise alone.
Since I lost weight by dropping lunch, I did the same with breakfast. I tricked (哄骗) my dad into thinking that I ate snacks, but whatever snacks I had, I fed them to the deer. When I looked at myself in the mirror every day, I saw excess fat (赘肉) that had to go. About a month and a half after I had bought the bathing suit, I tried it on again and it fell right off me.

Psychologist (心理学家) Raquel Bild-Libbin, explains that the chemical the study is analyzing will help teens in their future in ways we haven’t even fully understood yet.

Best wishes!
Yours truly,
Li Hua
【答案】Dear Jim,
I’m worried that you’ve been addicted to sharing all sorts of photos in WeChat circle recently. Undeniably, WeChat makes communication convenient and leisure time colorful. However, there exist some potential risks if we overshare. One severe problem is leaking privacy, which may cause economic losses. Besides, oversharing can make others uncomfortable, for they think you are showing off.
Thus, never should we post our personal information, nor should we rashly add strangers to the list of friends. It’s wiser to set aside some time to accompany parents or do something more meaningful.
Best wishes!
Yours truly,
Li Hua

“Oh my gosh, it looks so good on you,” my best friend shouted out. “That color suits you, and I’m getting it for you for your birthday. After all, it’s in two weeks!”
I had gone bathing suit shopping with my best friend. We wound up buying bathing suits, and the topic of going on a diet came up. The only reason for going on one would be to lose a little bit of our “baby fat”. I thought all the guys would like me if I was pretty and thin.
So I decided to stick to a diet, even though it would be hard because I am a chocoholic (巧克力狂).

【答案】Finally, dark circles formed under my eyes, and I stopped physically developing. I felt tired all the time, and even everyday activities became difficult. My worried parents talked to me about how unhealthy I was becoming. That’s when I realized how serious my situation was. I had let the desire for a thinner body overshadow my well-being, and now I was paying the price. Regret and fear gripped my heart as I faced the consequences of my choices.
I started seeing the doctor and it took one year for my body to start working normally again. The road to recovery was long and arduous. My doctors and nutritionists worked tirelessly to help me regain my strength and health. Slowly but surely, the color returned to my cheeks, and the dark circles faded. I learned the hard way that true beauty comes from within, and that health should never be compromised for the sake of appearance. Now, I cherish my body and focus on maintaining a balanced lifestyle, grateful for the lesson that almost cost me everything.
