Felicia Jackson was certified in CPR, but that didn’t stop her from drawing a blank in the face of a real-life crisis. When her son stopped breathing in the back seat of her car, she froze in panic. Thankfully, her husband remained calm and was able to save their child. However, Felicia was shaken to find that, with all her years of medical experience, she wasn’t able to respond to her son’s emergency under pressure.
This unpleasant situation inspired Felicia to come up with a simple tool to make performing CPR easier, especially in high-risk situation. She created the CPR Wrap, a pocket-sized packaging device that can be laid over the body of the victim to show where the rescuer should put their hands and mouth. Not only does the product provide helpful instructions, but it also includes a face shield (挡板) and a one-way breathing barrier. This cuts down on the transfer of germs while performing mouth-to-mouth.
“Even people experienced in CPR can forget their training in stressful situations,” reads the description on the product’s website. “CPR Wrap makes it possible for those individuals to effectively perform CPR at a moment’s notice.”
Although that CPR Wrap was launched in 2017, one video on the TikTok account has recently gone viral. In the video, Felicia shows viewers the simple process of using her product to perform CPR. She adds that it’s “so easy a child could do it.” The brand now boasts over 100,000 followers and 2 million likes.
Felicia Jackson is the inventor, founder, and CEO of CPR Wrap. Her son’s near-death experience inspired her to become the entrepreneur (企业家) she is today. After receiving her A.A.S in Physical Therapy in 2018, she continued to pursue education. She graduated from Launch of Chattanooga Entrepreneurial Academy in 2020 and established the Colab Accelerator Program in 2021. She and her husband now have three children. Felicia hopes to pass on her entrepreneurial spirit to her children so they may one day start businesses of their own.

A. It’s touching. B. It’s convincing.
C. It’s shocking. D. It’s irresponsible.

A. To establish her own business.
B. To help others be prepared for emergency.
C. To improve professionals’ first aid skills.
D. To rescue her son in a high-risk situation.

A. Cheap and flexible. B. Attractive and accurate.
C. Eco-friendly and simple. D. Portable and user-friendly.
7. What does the author mainly try to show in the last paragraph

There are many different species of gulls (海鸥), but the ones most people think of as seagull, are called herring gulls. They’re the species most likely to nest in houses and steal food.
Gulls get food after watching others flock to a food source, suggesting a strong role being played by social learning. In urban populations, there’s also evidence that they can acquire foraging information from humans. Studies have found gulls adjust their foraging behavior to human activity patterns and focus their attention on people with food.
Researchers from Sussex University wanted to better understand herring gulls’ broader observational skills and cognition. For this, they studied a group of gulls on the beachfront of the city of Brighton for a few months in 2021 and 2022. They found seagulls are excellent social learners with a higher- than- expected level of cognition.
For their study, the team showed blue and green packets of chips to groups of herring gulls. One of the researchers sat on the ground five meters away and either watched the gulls or took packets from his bag and ate them. Almost 50% of the birds approached over the packets when the researcher was eating, compared with 19% when they weren’t.
But that’s not all. When the gulls approached and ate from the packets, they chose the same color as the researcher’s packet 95% of the time. This shows gulls watch humans and the food options they select, and then use that knowledge to make their own food choices. It is a sign of how intelligent these animals are.
Madeleine Goumas, an expert on herring gulls, told The Guardian the study shows gulls are learning about the type of foods humans eat. “This shows us how to reduce negative interactions between humans and gulls, as we seem to be teaching gulls to explore new food items by accident,” she said.
8. What does the underlined word “foraging” in Para. 2 probably mean
A. Looking for shelter. B. Searching for food.
C. Avoiding danger. D. Fighting with enemies.
9. Which of the following surprised the scientists
A. Seagulls and humans have similar food tastes.
B. Seagulls like to build their nests in houses.
C. Human activity plays an important role in seagulls’ life.
D. Seagulls have much higher intelligence than they thought.
10. What do Madeleine’s words suggest
A. Seagulls can send signals to human beings.
B. Some of our interactions with gulls may be harmful.
C. We humans teach seagulls how to choose food on purpose.
D Seagulls can accurately distinguish the types of human food.
11. What does the author intend to tell us in this passage
A. Nature never stops teaching us.
B. Seagulls and humans live in harmony.
C. Seagulls make food choices by watching humans.
D. Wildlife gradually depends on humans for survival.

Archacologists in Norway have discovered a 1, 300-year-old ship burial that exists before the Viking Age. It’s now the oldest known ship burial in Scandinavia, according to a statement from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.
Researchers discovered the ship burial while investigating a large, grassy hill in the coastal community of Leka. Known as the Herlaugshagen burial mound (墓地) , it measures 23 feet tall and197 feet in diameter. Given its size, researchers have long suspected it contained a ship. Ship burials were once a traditional custom that involved burying the dead person inside their ship and covering the ship with dirt. The practice was “believed to make the person’s way to the afterlife a safe one.”
After surveying the site this summer, archaeologists finally confirmed their suspicions. Working on behalf of the Norwegian Directorate for Cultural Heritage, the team dug part of the mound and found large nails and pieces of wood that were likely once part of a ship.
Radiocarbon dating (碳年代测定法) of the wood suggests the mound was built around 700 C. E. during the Merovingian Period (roughly 550 to 800 C. E. ) . This period immediately comes before the Viking Era (around 793 to 1066 C. E. ). “This dating is really exciting because it pushes the whole tradition of ship burials quite far back in time,” says Geir Gronnesby, an archaeologist at the university’s museum, in the statement. “The find suggests that people who lived in the region at that time were skilled sailors who could build big ships much earlier than we previously thought.”
Researchers aren’t sure what the ship buried at Herlaugshagen was used for. However, they do know Leka is situated along a centuries-old shipping route. “We know that the exchange of goods must have been extensive at this time, and the most logical thing is that the goods were transported by ship along the coast,” Geir Gronnesby adds.
12. What is a ship burial intended to do according to the passage
A. To honor the owner of the ship.
B. To remind us to remember ancestors.
C. To observe a long- held traditional practice.
D. To safeguard the dead from being discovered.
13. Why is the discovery of the ship burial at Herlaugshagen considered significant
A. It is the earliest evidence of big ship construction.
B. It highlights the importance of coastal communities.
C. It is the largest burial mound in Scandinavia.
D. It marks the beginning of the Viking Age.
14. What can be inferred about this buried ship according to Geir Gronnesby
A. It was used to transport soldiers. B. It explored many areas.
C. It was destroyed in a storm. D. It may be used to carry goods.
15. What is the most suitable title for the passage
A. 1, 300-Year-Old Ship Burial Unearthed in Norway
B. The Origin of Ancient Exploration in Norway
C. The Custom of Burying People in Their Ships
D. The Ship Burial Traditions in Scandinavia

No wonder, then, that most people don’t use all their vacation time. And over half (52 percent) of U.S. employees work while on vacation.
A. If working hard is the way to earn more bread,
B. Even if many workers don’t use all their PTO,
C. Taking a real break is important for so many reasons.
D. But that doesn’t mean we always use our vacation time.
E. So why do we neglect to take all the time we’ve earned

Our house was across the street from the entrance of a famous hospital in the city. We lived downstairs and rented the upstairs rooms to patients at the clinic. As I was fixing supper one summer evening, there was a knock at the door. I opened it to see a truly awful-looking man.
“He’s hardly taller than my eight-year-old,” I thought. Yet his voice was pleasant as he said, “Good evening. I’ve come to see if you have a room for just one night. I came for treatment from the eastern shore this morning, and there’s no bus till the morning. ”
For a moment, I hesitated, but his following words convinced me: “I could sleep in this rocking chair on the porch (门廊). My bus leaves early in the morning.” So I told him we would find him a bed but to rest on the porch.
I went inside and finished getting supper. When we were ready, I asked the old man if he would join us. “No, thank you.” When I had finished the dishes, I went out to talk with him for a few minutes.
It didn’t take long to see that this older man had a big heart crowded into that tiny body. He told me he fished for a living to support his family. He was grateful that no pain accompanied his disease, which was a form of skin cancer.
At bedtime, we put a camp cot (折叠床) in the children’s room for him. When I got up in the morning, the bed was neatly folded. He refused breakfast, but just before he left for his bus, he said, “Could I please come back and stay the next time I have a treatment ”
He paused a moment and then added, “Your children made me feel at home. Grownups are bothered by my face, but children don’t seem to mind. ” I told him he was welcome to come again.

8 What does the underlined word “foraging” in Para. 2 probably mean
A. Looking for shelter. B. Searching for food.
C. Avoiding danger. D. Fighting with enemies.
9. Which of the following surprised the scientists

D. Seagulls can accurately distinguish the types of human food.
11. What does the author intend to tell us in this passage

Without doubt, the nonstop demands of work and life can be bad for your well-being, exhausting your physical resources and cognitive capacities-and possibly resulting in adverse health and performance results.

【答案】
On his next trip, he brought a big fish as a gift. It was a generous offering and gratitude for the warmth and comfort we had provided. The fish was more than a meal; it was a symbol of the bond that had formed between us. My children were thrilled, and they helped prepare it for dinner, asking many questions about the man’s life and fishing stories. He shared tales of the sea, teaching them valuable lessons about perseverance and the simple joys of life. His visits became a cherished part of our lives, each one bringing a new story or a small gift
My neighbor asked me, “Did you keep that awful- looking man You can lose roomers (房客) by putting up such people!” Her words stung, but I knew in my heart that we had done the right thing. I patiently explained to her how the man, despite his appearance, had a heart of gold and how he had positively impacted my children. I also mentioned that several of our regular guests had commented on the positive atmosphere in our home, which I attributed partly to the man’s visits. In the end, it wasn’t the appearance that mattered, but the character and the connections we formed. Our home was richer for having known him.
