At the end of a perfect July afternoon in 2016, Raymond awoke from an accident only to find that he’d damaged his neck and could no longer walk or fully use his hands.
But that’s just the beginning of Raymond’s story. A year later, frustrated with the lack of rehab (康复) resources available for people like himself in New Orleans, the former broadcast engineer decided that his hometown needed an adaptive gym to cater for those with injuries and disabilities. Based on the need, Raymond financed the establishment of Split Second Fitness in 2021, with specially designed workout equipment and therapy programs that allow clients to grow stronger without the aim of making money.
The inspiration for Split Second Fitness came to Raymond as he spent three months at a state-of-the-art rehab center in Sacramento, which redefined his understanding of recovery. “I knew I had to get back home and figure out how to do that,” says the natural-born net-worker, who spent three years raising funds and learning how to run an organization.
Seated bikes help move disabled users’ legs; yoga instructors help stroke survivors increase flexibility and range of motion; mental health experts facilitate the hard transition to a new way of living. “Anybody’s life can change in a split second like mine did,” explains Raymond.“ What our organization is really centered around is ‘How do we give you hope ’ and ‘How can we help you transform that hope into action steps for you to create a better tomorrow ’”
“The aim is to increase the quality of life of those with a disability,” he says.“ Because if I can give you something to look forward to, it will help you get out of the painful process and help you get back on track to a happy and healthy life.” Raymond, who insists he’s just getting started, says that he plans to open similar gyms across the nation. “I want to be remembered as someone who moved the needle on disability advocacy issues.”
4. Which statement fits Split Second Fitness
A It is open to everyone.
B. It is made up of many gyms.
C. It is funded by TV programs.
D. It is run on a non-profit basis.
5. What inspired Raymond to set up Split Second Fitness
A. A live broadcast.
B. A rehab experience.
C. A request from a fitness center.
D. A suggestion from a former workmate.
6. What can we learn about Split Second Fitness from paragraph 4
A. Its goal and mission. B. Its facilities and staff.
C. Its background and change. D. Its challenges and difficulties.
7. What is the best title for the text
A. Life with a Disability: a Painful Process
B. Hope in Motion: a Road to Self-discovery
C. Gyms: Making You Healthier and Stronger
D. Instructors: Helping You Get Back on Track

Primary testing of a newly developed AI-enhanced blood test has shown promise in being able to accurately determine the potential of someone’s developing Parkinson’s disease (帕金森病) in the coming years. In research published last week, a team of scientists in Europe identified eight blood-based biomarkers that might alert doctors to a high potential for Parkinson’s disease development in a patient — up to seven years before symptoms appear.
The test, while still in its early stages, offers hope for a disorder that has no cure and affects nearly nine million people worldwide. At present, the treatment for Parkinson’s disease tends to be reactive and focused on stopping symptoms from getting worse, which include shaking movements, slow movements, stiffness and a loss of balance, after a diagnosis (诊断) is made. “We need to get to people before they develop symptoms. It’s always better to do prevention rather than cure,” senior author Kevin Mills says. With this goal in mind, the team began their work by collecting blood samples from 99 people who have Parkinson’s disease and 36 people who don’t. Analyzing a selection of 70 percent of these samples, a machine learning algorithm (算法) identified eight proteins that appeared in different concentrations in the blood of those with the disease.
This pattern could provide a diagnosis with 100 percent accuracy, according to a statement from University College London. In a follow- up evaluation, the algorithm was given the remaining 30 percent of blood samples that it hadn’t been trained on — 30 from people currently with Parkinson’s disease and 11 from people without it. The tool aced the test, correctly diagnosing every patient. “This means that drug treatment could potentially be given at an earlier stage, which could possibly slow down disease progression or even prevent it from occurring,” Michael Bartl, the co-first author of the study, says.
“We’ve seen significant progress in the development of exciting new tests for Parkinson’s disease in the last year alone,” Katherine Fletcher, research communications leader says. “We anticipate that these new tests will start being used within the next few years.”
8. What can the new blood test do for Parkinson’s disease
A. Predict its likelihood. B. Relieve its symptoms.
C. Identify its initial causes. D. Determine its treatment plan.
9. What do we know about the current treatment for Parkinson’s disease
A. It is mainly preventive. B. It is on symptom control.
C. It is effective in complete cure. D. It is mainly based on early diagnosis.
10. What does the underlined phrase “aced the test” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Needed a new test. B. Became a failed test.
C. Performed well in the test. D. Showed weaknesses in the test.
11. What does Katherine Fletcher think of the new blood test for Parkinson’s disease
A. It is puzzling. B. It is doubtful. C. It is promising. D. It is interesting.

The Arctic has seen the largest and most steady declines in sea ice’s cooling power since1980, but until recently, the South Pole had appeared more adaptive to the changing climate, according to new research led by scientists in University of Michigan. Its sea ice cover had remained relatively stable from 2007 to the 2010s, and the cooling power of the Antarctic sea ice was actually trending up at that time.
That view suddenly changed in 2016, when an area larger than Texas melted on one of the continent’s largest ice shelves. The Antarctic lost sea ice then too, and its cooling power hasn’t recovered. As a result, 2016 and the following seven years have had the weakest global sea ice cooling effect since the early 1980s.
Beyond the disappearing ice cover, the remaining ice is also becoming less reflective as warming temperatures and increased rainfall create thinner and wetter ice and more melt ponds that reflect less solar radiation. This effect has been most obvious in the Arctic, where sea ice has become less reflective in the sunniest parts of the year, and the new study raises the possibility that it could be an important factor in the Antarctic, too— in addition to lost sea ice cover.
“The changes to Antarctic sea ice since 2016 boost the warming feedback from sea ice loss by 40%. By not accounting for this change in the radiative effect of sea ice in Antarctica, we could be missing a considerable part of the total global energy absorption,” said the study’s first author.
The research team hopes to provide their updated estimates of sea ice’s cooling power and climate feedback from less reflective ice to the climate science community via a website that is updated whenever new satellite data is available.
“Climate change adaptation plans should bring aboard these new numbers as part of the overall calculus(计算)on how rapidly and how widely the impacts of cryospheric(冰冻圈的)radiative cooling loss will clearly show on the global climate system,” said the first author.
12. What does the melt of Antarctic sea ice indicate
A. The Antarctic is enlarging. B. The global warming trends up.
C. The South Pole needs cooling. D. The sea ice cover stays stable.
13. What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 3 refer to
A. The study. B. The warming temperature.
C. The sea ice. D. The effect.
14. What does the research team intend to do
A. Share their research data.
B. Set up an updated website.
C. Find access to satellite data.
D. Turn to the climate science community.
15. What is the first author’s attitude to the new data
A. Acceptable. B. Objective. C. Opposed. D. Indifferent.

One year, a few weeks before New Year’s Day, my husband and I decided to invite a nearby guest over for the holiday. The guest, named Ilse, was a 78- year- old woman living alone in a big house with a classical style.
Ilse was a gentle and soft- spoken old woman. My teenage son, Mike, especially liked her, and treated her as a familiar grandma. On New Year’s Eve, we had a great time together. My husband and I felt as if she were an old friend. Then I invited her to live with us and enjoy the holiday together.
The more time we spent with Ilse the more we felt we couldn’t live without her. She often shared interesting stories with us about her past experiences. But talking about her family, she began to weep. She said that for some reason, she had tearfully given her only daughter to a family in another state to be raised. But later, because the host family moved several times, she lost contact with her daughter.
During the holidays, we spent day and night with her, and our relationship with her grew deeper and deeper. I even felt responsible for her. She was like one of the family to me, and I was a special one left in her circle. I realized Ilse needed more company and care. So I helped her hi re an hourly caregiver to look after her when she went back to her house. Each time I stopped by her house, Ilse seemed closer than before. Mike would also visit her every day after class.
One morning, I received a call from her caregiver. “Please come over now. Ilse has left home.” I stopped what I was doing and drove to her house, followed by Mike. When I reached Ilse’s house, the caregiver handed me a letter. I read through it. In the letter, she expressed her gratitude and told me that she went looking for her daughter. She also left me a large check, hoping it would be useful to me. But when I called her phone, the voice message said that the number was not in service.

This pattern could provide a diagnosis with 100 percent accuracy according to a statement from University College London.

The more time we spent with Ilse, the more we felt we couldn’t live without her.

【答案】I decided to use the check to help the children in need. I bought new clothes, stationery and toys for them. Seeing the smiles on their faces, I felt a warmth in my heart. It seemed as if Ilse’s kindness was spreading through these acts. Mike also joined in, helping to distribute the gifts. We often talked about Ilse and hoped she would find her daughter soon. Additionally, we decided to write letters to Ilse, sharing with her the joy and gratitude of the children she had helped through her generous gift.
One day, while preparing New Year’s gifts for the children, a lady who looked like Ilse visited me. My heart skipped a beat. She introduced herself as Ilse’s daughter. She had found out about Ilse’s search and traced her way here. Overwhelmed with joy, I shared all that had happened. She thanked us for taking care of her mother. We promised to keep in touch and continue to hope for Ilse's safe return. Additionally, she told me that she was determined to find her mother and reunite with her, no matter how long it took. This unexpected reunion was a beautiful gift, a sign that kindness and love always find their way back.
