第三部分:阅读理解 (共15小题; 每小题2分,满分30分)
A
I was reading these interesting stories behind a group of great logos in the world. Personally Nike is my favorite one — it’s so simple. And I liked the stories behind them, which made me forget all other things. McDonald’s, Apple, Mercedes Benz and Adidas own great logos as well, and they are among my favorites.
Nike
In the Greek myth, Nike is the goddess of victory and the source of inspiration for soldiers. This logo represents the wing in the famous statue of the Greek goddess. Nike’s logo was designed by Carolyn Davidson in 1971 for $35, and was registered as a trademark in 1995.
McDonald’s
The logo was designed in 1962 by Jim Schindler to resemble the archshaped(拱形的) signs on the side of the company’s then walk-up hamburger stand. Later on, the two golden arches were combined together to form the M. The McDonald’s name was added to the logo in 1968.
Apple
There are different stories behind Apple’s logo. The first logo was a reference to the religious story of Adam and Eve, in which the apple represented the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. One year later, the second logo was designed in 1977 by Steve Jobs and Ronald Wayne, and it described Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree. This logo didn’t stay long. One year later it was replaced almost immediately by graphic designer Rob Janoff’s “rainbow apple”, a rainbow-colored silhouette(轮廓) of an apple with a bite taken out of it. And then the rainbow-colored apple was replaced by the one-colored logo in 1998. It has not been changed so far.
Mercedes Benz
The Mercedes Benz logo, which was originally created by Gottlieb Daimler in 1909, consists of a simple description of a three-pointed star that represents its rule of the land, the sea and the air. The company was founded by Gottlieb Daimler and Wilhelm Maybach. Mercedes is the name of Maybach’s elder daughter, while Benz came as a result of a combination with Benz, Cie and DMG in 1926.
Adidas
The Adidas logo, which was created by the founder of the company Adi Dassler, represents mountains, pointing towards the challenges that are seen ahead and goals that can be achieved. The logo was used for the first time in 1967.
31. What does the author think of the stories of the great logos
A. They are boring. B. They are out of date.
C. They are attractive. D. They are practical.
32. What does Nike’s logo stand for
A. The goddess of victory.
B. The source of inspiration for soldiers.
C. The statue of the Greek goddess.
D. The wing of the Greek goddess.
33. We can learn that Apple’s present logo is ________.
A. the religious story of Adam and Eve
B. a bitten apple with only one color
C. Newton’s sitting under an apple tree
D. the rainbow-colored bitten apple
34. ________ stands for the rule of the land, the sea and the air.
A. Nike’s logo B. Apple’s logo
C. The Mercedes logo D. The Adidas logo
35. Which of the following time orders describes the births of the great logos

At the end of August this year I moved from London to a small town in Quebec, Canada, called Matane to work as an English teacher. Patience is a word that has appeared in many forms over the past two months.
I don't see myself as being the most patient person in the world, but I was deeply impressed by my experience in the first week of teaching. I had just finished a discussion with two students and just as they were leaving the classroom, one of them turned back and said "Thank you for your patience." That was an early reminder of the importance being patient as a teacher. Moreover, patience in the classroom can be the difference between building students' confidence in a language and breaking down their confidence entirely. Being patient as a teacher means empathizing with students. It is not easy to learn a new language and allowing students to find their way will benefit them in the long term.
Living my life in French is not easy but the people of Quebec are very patient. Quebecers repeat things several times and they are more than happy to wait while I find the correct words to express myself. It's a learning process, but with the patience of others the process is less frightening.
When I first arrived in Matane, I kept getting headaches from having to concentrate all the time due to the language. I had to keep reminding myself that it would take time, and two months later the headaches are a distant memory and my ears have become more used to the Quebecois accent. The key is to be patient with yourself. There is no short cut to learning a language, but it will be worth it in the end.
36. The author moved to Quebec in order to ___________.
A. learn French B. teach English C. visit a friend D. see a doctor
37. What language do people of Quebec mainly speak
A. French. B. English. C. Spanish. D. Russian.
38. The underlinedwords "empathizing with" in Paragraph 2 mean ___________.
A. refusing to accept someone's opinions
B. disagreeing with someone in a similar situation
C discussing with someone about something important
D. understanding someone else's feelings and experiences
39. While Quebecers are talking with the author, they ___________.
A. laugh loudly B. wait patiently C. speak quick D. think seriously
40. What lesson has the author learned from the experiences
A. It is difficult to make a living in France. B. It is wrong to move from London to Quebec.
C. Being patient in learning a language is worth it. D. Students should know the importance of patience.

When John was growing up, other kids felt sorry for him. His parents always had him weeding the garden, carrying out the garbage and delivering newspapers. But when John reached adulthood, he was better off than his childhood playmates. He had more job satisfaction, a better marriage and was healthier. Most of all, he was happier. Far happier.
These are the findings of a 40-year study that followed the lives of 456 teenage boys from Boston. The study showed that those who had worked as boys enjoyed happier and more productive lives than those who had not. "Boys who worked in the home or community gained competence(能力) and came to feel they were worthwhile members of society," said George Vaillant, the psychologist(心理学家) who made the discovery. "And because they felt good about themselves, others felt good about them."
Vaillant’s study followed these males in great detail. Interviews were repeated at ages 25,31 and 47. Under Vaillant, the researchers compared the men’s mental-health scores with their boyhood-activity scores. Points were awarded for part-time jobs, housework, effort in school, and ability to deal with problems.
The link between what the men had done as boys and how they turned out as adults was surprisingly sharp. Those who had done the most boyhood activities were twice as likely to have warm relations with a wide variety of people, five times as likely to be well paid and 16 times less likely to have been unemployed. The researchers also found that IQ and family social and economic class made no real difference in how the boys turned out.
Working — at any age — is important. Childhood activities help a child develop responsibility, independence, confidence and competence — the underpinnings(基础) of emotional health. They also help him understand that people must cooperate and work toward common goals. The most competent adults are those who know how to do this. Yet work isn’t everything. As Tolstoy once said, "One can live magnificently in this world if one knows how to work and how to love, to work for the person one loves and to love one’s work."
41. What do we know about John
A. He enjoyed his career and marriage.
B. He had few childhood playmates.
C. He received little love from his family.
D He was envied by others in his childhood.
42. Vaillant’s words in Paragraph 2 serve as .
A. a description of personal values and social values
B. an analysis of how work was related to competence
C. an example for parents’ expectations of their children
D. an explanation why some boys grew into happy men
43. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by .
A. recording the boys’ effort in school
B. evaluating the men’s mental health
C. comparing different sets of scores
D. measuring the men’s problem solving ability
44. What does the underlined word "sharp" probably mean in Paragraph 4
A. Quick to react. B. Having a thin edge.
C. Clear and definite. D. Sudden and rapid.
45 What can be inferred from the last paragraph
A. Competent adults know more about love than work.
B. Emotional health is essential to a wonderful adult life.
C. Love brings more joy to people than work does.
D. Independence is the key to one’s success.

US student Vanessa Tahay stands out from the other teenagers in her school. Her skin is dark, her accent is thick, and you ask her, she will tell you these are the things she is proudest of.
Tahay is a poet, and at 18 she’s considered among the best in Los Angele. When she’s onstage, audience often go silent. They also laugh, shout, and cry. But that doesn’t come easily for someone who comes from a village that sits at the base of a huge mountain range in Central America.
When she first appeared at school, she was teased by others for being short and for being different. She never spoke, so they called her “mouse”. “How do I defend myself ” Tahay thought. “I don’t know how.” “Keep going,” her mother would tell her. “At some point, you’ll learn.”
She spent hours after school and on weekends watching the same DVDS: English without barriers. Tahay’s older brother, Elmer, persuaded her to go to the after-school poetry club.
The first time Tahay read the poems in the club, she was astonished. “I wish I could write like that,” she thought “I wanna say something.”
She wrote her first poem about her first year in America. She called it Invisible. The day her turn came to recite in front of the team, she broke down crying. She cried for 15 minutes. “I had so much held in,” Tahay said. “I couldn’t even finish it.”
But she kept at it despite her less-than-perfect grammar, spelling and pronunciation. Still, she wouldn’t tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they’d make fun of her.
But with time, her poems changed her. “They gave me pride,” Tahay said. “They told me I’m worth something.”
“She had this innocence,” her English teacher Kurnick said, “This willingness to be genuine and to show you things you don’t ever see.”

It's a learning process but with the patience of others the process is less frightening.

43. Vaillant’s team obtained their findings by .
A. recording the boys’ effort in school
B. evaluating the men’s mental health

But she kept at it despite her less-than-perfect grammar, spelling and pronunciation. Still, she wouldn’t tell her friends about her poetry because she worried they’d make fun of her.
