Bournemouth in Dorset has always been my favourite seaside town. When I was growing up, Mum and Dad didn’t have much money, but they’d saved enough for a few days in Bournemouth. I was four years old at the time. I don’t actually remember much about the trip, apart from being devastated when we had to leave. Mum said I fell in love with the place and insisted on waving goodbye to the sea when it was time to go. So I grew up believing Bournemouth was a wonderful place.
Forty years on, my wife and I returned for a week’s break. I was nervous, wondering if I’d be able to bring back that delight I’d felt as a child. I needn’t have worried. We had a fantastic time. It helped that the British weather had decided to provide us with high temperatures and plenty of sun. But it was Bournemouth that kept me spellbound, making me feel like a child again.
Bournemouth and its neighbour, Boscombe, are always busy, alive with chatter, music and other lively sounds. But as we stepped into Boscombe Chine Gardens, all the noise faded away. A sense of peace spread through us as we meandered along the paths, delighting in the squirrels climbing up and down the trees and the bright colours of the pretty plants.
One morning, we made a short trip to Poole Quay and took the ferry to Brownsea Island. Owned by the National Trust, it’s a feast for the eyes, from its mock Tudor entrance, to the many peacocks walking around, to the magnificent views of the sun sparkling on the shining waters and boats bobbing up and down, seen from the island’s highest point.
Before we knew it it was time to return home—but not before waving goodbye to the sea.
4. Which of the following best explains “devastated” underlined in Paragraph 1
A. Sorrowful. B. Surprised.
C. Thrilled. D. Desperate.
5. What made the author feel nervous
A. The fear of losing childhood memories.
B. The adjustment to the new circumstances.
C. The uncertainty of recalling childhood delight.
D. The exposure to high temperatures and sunshine.
6. What does the author think about Boscombe Chine Gardens
A It boasts seaside views. B. It belongs to wild animals.
C. It is free of the town’s noise. D. It reminds him of his childhood.
7. What is the text mainly about
A. Farewell to Bournemouth. B. Working in a wonderful place.
C. A childhood unforgettable story. D. Revisiting a childhood favourite.
C
Plant-based food, like beans and nuts, can provide vital nutrients (营养物) using a small part of the land required to produce meat and dairy products. By changing animal-sourced food into plant-based food, much of the remaining land could support ecosystems that absorb CO2, according to a new study.
In their study, the researchers analyzed and mapped areas where production of animal-sourced food, which requires 83% of Earth’s agricultural land, prevents the growth of native vegetation (植被), including forests. They focused on places where changing what people grow and eat could free up space for ecosystems to grow again.
According to the researchers’ findings, vegetation re-growth could make less CO2 given off, thus reducing the chance of warming the planet, if demand for meat were to decrease greatly in the coming decades along with its great land requirements. “We should think of changing our eating habits and choosing an environmentally friendly diet so that native forests can be restored (恢复),” says Hayek, leader of the study from New York University.
Technological solutions to climate change may soon appear, like machines that remove CO2, directly from the atmosphere. Placing too much confidence in these technologies could prove dangerous, however, according to the study. So restoring native vegetation on large agricultural land may be now our safest choice for removing CO2. There’s no need to bet our future only on technologies that are still not tested widely.
The benefits of cutting back on meat and dairy products reach far beyond dealing with climate change. “Reduced meat production would also be beneficial to water quality, wildlife habitat and biodiversity (生物多样性),” notes William Ripple, a professor of ecology at Oregon State University.
8. What is the new study mainly about?
A. The food’s nutrition. B. The greenhouse effect.
C. The animal-plant relationship. D. The agriculture-ecosystem relationship.
9. Why does the study suggest changing animal-sourced food to plant-based food?
A. To improve ecosystems. B. To make a greater profit.
C. To save space for humans. D. To produce more nutrients.
10. What’s the author’s attitude towards technological solutions to climate change?
A. Uncaring. B. Cautious.
C. Supportive. D. Disapproving.
11. What can we expect of developing plant-based food according to William Ripple?
A. It will stop diseases from animals.
B. It tends to control climate change.
C. It can increase the number of wildlife.
D. It is likely to change people’s eating habits.
D
Playing sports you enjoy can help you meet recommended activity levels. In a 2012 article, Dr. David Geier claimed playing sports was linked to reduced rates of obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes and other poor health conditions. A 2012 Melbourne University summary fact sheet claimed playing sports leads to the healthy growth of bones, muscles and connective tissue in children. It also suggested children who play sports tend to remain more physically active as adults and are less likely to smoke or use drugs.
The social benefits of playing sports last well beyond youth. Team sports offer adults of all ages an opportunity for social interaction. A 2009 study by Asztalos Metal, published in the “Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport” found playing sports reduced stress levels among adults while other forms of physical activity did not.
While your chances of ever making it to the professionals are slim, sports can still lead to career opportunities. You can become a coach or official, and with the right education and experience become part of the sports media. Playing sports could be your ticket to a cheaper education, too. The data-compiling website reported that 177,000 student athletes had some or all of their education paid for in the 2021-22 academic year.
Of course, with any physical activity comes the risk of injury. but some sports are definitely more dangerous than others. In a 2011 survey, the non-profit Safe Kids Worldwide reported that over 1.35 million children sustained sports-related injuries bad enough for a trip to an emergency room. Some sports even carry the risk of potentially dangerous physical problems off the field. Most notable are the eating disorders that have developed among gymnasts and other athletes that need to cut weight for competition.
12. What does the first paragraph mainly tell us
A. Sports help keep active and healthy. B. Sports reduce stress levels.
C. Sports help gain social benefits. D. Sports help recovery from illness.
13. How can students get a cheaper education by playing sports
A. They are paid to play sports. B. They can achieve scholarship.
C. They’ll be stronger to study better. D. They can graduate earlier.
14. How is the last paragraph different from the above paragraphs
A. Telling a new advantage. B. Moving to a summary.
C. Writing in a different tone. D. Giving further explanation.
15. Who is the article intended for
A. Officials. B. Sportsmen. C. Doctors. D. Kids.

The school festival was buzzing with excitement, all because of a new contest called “Innovate Your Way.” This contest was all about making a costume that was as unique and creative as possible, showcasing what one loves the most.
Lily Adams was surrounded by classmates with cool ideas. One classmate said excitedly, “I’m going to be the whole solar system, with planets circling around me!” One boasted (吹嘘), “I’ll redefine innovation. I will become a walking smartphone from the future, showing the digital age with interactive apps and games.”
Meanwhile, another one came up with the idea to dress up as a live weather forecast. He planned to attach LED screens to his outfit, displaying different weather patterns. This costume would not just show the weather but also change with real-time updates, combining technology and creativity in a way the festival had never seen.
Feeling overwhelmed, Lily wasn’t sure what to do. Her friends had such amazing ideas, and she hadn’t even picked a costume yet. She shared her worries with her friend Noah, saying,” I can’t make up my mind. Every idea seems too hard to do or just not exciting enough.”
Noah, always wise, had a great suggestion. “Why don’t you make a costume about gardening You love it, and it’s something unique to you,” he said. Lily was unsure because the contest was just a few days away. “I don’t know if there’s enough time to make something like that from the beginning,” she worried. But Noah encouraged her, “You have a special talent for making something wonderful out of simple things. Use what’s around you.”
Inspired by Noah’s words, Lily thought over her collection of plants and flowers. Arriving home, she noticed the pile of old gardening magazines and a forgotten green tarp(防水布)in the garage.

【答案】Dear Gary,
Learning that you are planning to bring home some gifts representing Chinese culture, I’m pleased to offer my suggestions.
Personally, I believe green tea is an ideal choice, through which your mum can get a good taste of the typical Chinese lifestyle. Besides, the Chinese knot, a decoration found almost everywhere in China, can be an appropriate alternative too. Your wishes of reunion and good luck can be perfectly conveyed through its red threads knitted together.
Hopefully, the information above will be of some help to you.
Yours,
Li Hua
