Four National Parks to Add to Your Bucket List
The national parks in the United States are chosen for their natural, historic, and cultural values. Here are some of those kinds of parks.
National Park of American Samoa
Closer to New Zealand than the United States, this park is one of the most remote (偏僻的) national parks. It protects a paleotropical rainforest. A third of the park is oceanic waters, with rich species. Ofu Island in the park has a protected area for snorkeling and diving, along with a famous white-sand beach. The park has a wet season that runs from November through April.
Hot Springs National Park
This park’s mountains encircle the northern edge of the city of Hot Springs, Arkansas, which is centered over 43 hot springs and 26 miles of hiking trails. Even before official park designation (指定), the city of Hot Springs had become a destination for treating physical problems. In addition to bathing, visitors come to tour high-end bathhouses built in the late Victorian age, many in Spanish style.
Indiana Dunes (沙丘) National Park
With its 15 miles of shore under the forces of Lake Michigan’s wind and waves, Indiana’s only national park has high sands from which visitors can see the skyline of Chicago across the lake. “Singing sands” may occur once a month under the best conditions. Trails lead through the park’s wetlands, dunes, and forests. The park also shelters more than 60 ancient structures.
Gates of the Arctic National Park and Preserve
This giant park is completely above the Arctic Circle. In the northern park during winter the sun doesn’t rise for nearly a month and in summer the sun doesn’t set for nearly two months. In summer, the ground gets wet from melted ice, which helps plants grow. By August, the plants turn into bright red and yellow colors. Looking across the vast land can be confusing and big bears in the distance look like nearby little squirrels (松鼠).

As a businesswoman in her city, Belinda has founded a high- tech company. Also as an author and a philanthropist (慈善家) who is running a private charitable organization, the best and most difficult parts of her job are the same: talking to people. This “on the ground” work is her favorite part of being a philanthropist, but hearing stories of sadness is difficult.
She has been working in this field for about 15 years. She really cares about lifting up girls and women. She thinks that when girls and women can step into their full power in society, society changes for the better for everybody. So she’s very passionate about making sure girls and women have the opportunity to shine.
Belinda has a full schedule for each workday. If she’s in her company, a typical day for her involves taking meetings in the office. Sometimes, it’s reviewing strategies. Sometimes, it’s distributing (分配) resources. If she’s out of her company, it’s often meeting with her partners, trying to discuss how to best support their initiatives and put more money or voice their opinion behind something. Or, sometimes, it’s talking to families to understand their realities.
Belinda’s background in computer science gives her a “logical mindset”. She thinks that numbers can help us see things in the world. So she’s a data focus. If she can’t explain or understand something, she’ll ask for the numbers to get a better understanding of the situation.
For young people who want to pursue a career helping people, or working for a cause they care about, but don’t know where to start, her advice is to take the first step today to do something you’ re passionate about, whether it’s working at a food bank or volunteering at a library. There’s huge power in them thinking about their time, their knowledge, and where they can give back.
24. What is Belinda’s favorite as a philanthropist
A. Organizing the donating activities. B. Hearing other people’s sad stories.
C. Communicating with different people. D. Writing articles about charity activities.

A. By inspiring them to use their abilities. B. By giving them more money.
C. By teaching them to make strategies. D. By inspiring them to care for others.

Dogs have been humans’ best friends for thousands of years, and their ability to understand us goes more than just following orders. Dogs are really good at understanding how humans feel. They’ve learned to pick up on words and facial expressions from humans. A recent study has shown that dogs can actually smell human stress and respond (回应) to it in ways that suggest a close relationship with us humans. This interesting discovery throws light on how deeply close our lives have become with our dog friends.
So, can dogs really smell stress The answer is yes! Researchers at the University of Bristol did a study where they found that dogs can sense stress through a chemical called cortisol(皮质醇) in our sweat(汗). This ability allows them to respond emotionally to human stress.
In the study, 18 dogs and their owners took part, along with 1 1 volunteers who didn’t know the dogs. These volunteers went through public speaking and took tests of solving difficult math problems without any preparation. Their worry made more cortisol appear in their sweat. When the dogs smelled this stressed sweat. they felt less curious and showed less interest in a food bowl in an uncertain position, as if they thought there was no food in those bowls. It seems that dogs can really feel the stress of humans and their own moods can be affected, too. This shows that humans and dogs have a very deep connection, where emotions can spread between us like a wave.
Then how did dogs develop such ability to sense stress Well, it might be because sensing stress helped dogs survive in the past. If they could tell when another member of their group was worried and stressed, they knew they might be at risk. As Zoe Parr- Cortes, lead study author and a Ph. D. student at Bristol Veterinary School, said, “Being able to sense stress from another member of the pack was likely beneficial.”
28. What does the recent study tell us about dogs
A. Their long history of development. B. Their various roles in human history.
C. Their ability to learn human language. D. Their deeper connection with humans.
29. What did the volunteers need to do in the study
A. Calm dogs down. B. Test their own ability.
C. Experience stress. D. Collect their own sweat.
30. Why might dogs have developed the ability to sense stress
A. To help them hunt for more food. B. To warn them of possible dangers.
C. To guide them to respond to human orders. D. To allow them to connect with their group.
31. What can be the best title for the text
A. Dogs’ Unbelievable Ability to Sense Human Stress
B. The Development of the Human- Dog Relationship
C. Humans Sense Stress Through Their Beloved Dogs
D. Dogs’ Stress Having an Influence on Human Behavior
D
Curling (冰壶), originating in Scotland, dates back to the early 16th century. Often referred to as “chess on ice”, it includes two teams of four players taking turns to slide (滑动) round stones on a special ice surface towards a circle that looks like a dartboard (镖靶). Called the “house”, this circle acts as a score board. The goal for each side is to get their stones closest to the center, or “button”.
A special part of the game is the use of a broom to sweep the ice in front of the sliding stone. As many viewers of curling might have noticed, in curling, players usually sweep hard while keeping up to speed with the stone thrown, and a person on the other end directing and shouting at the sweepers “HARD!” during the game. With three players taking turns throwing stones and sweeping ice, and one person, called the “skip”, often the team leader, throwing the last two stones, the whole game depends on each other to win the competition. Similar to many other sports, curling takes more interactions to win than personal ability.
Curling is often considered a gentleman’s sport because all players of the game should have good etiquette. As with many other sports, curling has rules about how to keep the respect and fun of the game for everyone. It usually starts with both teams sharing a handshake and greetings before the start of the game. Unlike other sports, each player follows the “do not disturb (打扰)” rule when the others are playing. With such a unique approach to playing a competitive sport, curling can teach both players and audiences alike the values of respect and fairness.
Curling is fresh in China, but it is quickly gaining popularity. There are professional curling venues and training bases all over the country. On the international stage, the Chinese curling team is also performing increasingly well. This has inspired more passion among Chinese people for the sport.
32. What is the function of the “house” in the curling game
A. To make the stones slide much faster. B. To show the results of each of game.
C. To offer a place for the players to rest. D. To get the stones closest to the “button”.
33. What is the key to winning a curling game for a team according to paragraph 2
A. Team members’ working together. B. The ability of an excellent player.
C. The sweepers’ speed to slide stones. D. The team leader’s last two stones.
34. What does the underlined word “etiquette” in paragraph 3 mean
A. Luck. B. Health. C. Manners. D. Skills.
35. Which word can best describe curling’s development in China
A. Uncertain. B. Challenging. C. Worrying. D. Hopeful.
