As a college professor, I am required to hold an office hour before my lecture. These office hours are optional and tend to be busier at the beginning and end of a semester (学期). In the middle, they can become quiet. A few years ago I was given a flute (长笛) as a gift, so I decided that I would use my quiet office hours to practice this new instrument. The experience brought unexpected insights into performance anxiety.
I held my office hour in the near-empty lecture hall, one hour before the class began. The hall was open to any student who wished to talk with me about coursework or to take a seat and quietly read before the lecture began. I would assemble (组装) my flute, open my lesson book, and begin working on the instrument I had never played before. I also followed online video lessons—all done in front of a few students who would come early to class.
I would begin playing long tones, closing my eyes and “forgetting” that anyone was in the room with me. I was surprised to find that I felt no anxiety while learning a new instrument in front of others. Had I been playing my main instrument, I would have had more concern about the level of my playing and how my playing was being received. However, in this setting, it was clear that I was an absolute beginner with no expectations of impressing anyone with my mastery. My attention was set on figuring the instrument out. I had no expectations of how I would sound and had little expectations of sounding like anything more than a beginner.
There have been many things I have learned from my experiment of learning an instrument in public. Whenever musicians talk with me about their stage fright, I offer them this story.
4. What is “an office hour” for
A. The professors to show talents. B. The students to appreciate music.
C. The teachers to offer consultation. D. The lecturers to make preparations.
5. Why did the author play a flute
A. To pass the time. B. To give a lecture.

6. What made the author at ease when playing the flute
A. The technique from the video. B. His impressive performance.
C. The audience’s active response. D. His concentration on playing.
7. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text
A. My Joy of, Learning a New Thing B. My Tip on Performing in the Public
C. My Discovery to Ease Stage Fright D. My Office Hour Before Every Lesson
C
I heard some good news recently. My grandfather called me to test his new hearing aid. For the first time, he could hear my voice, which thrilled us.
I soon found out there was another reason my grandparents were so happy — their new audiologist (听觉病矫治专家), Anna. Unlike the previous providers they’d been dealing with, Anna gave time and attention. Anna not only ensured the new hearing aid worked as it should, but also offered to go to my grandparents’ apartment to show them how to use it.
Such kindness might sound rare, but I’ve since started wondering: what if it’s more common than we think
It started with some research that showed people often underestimate the willingness of strangers to engage with, or even befriend them. Then I came across a study that suggested news coverage of current affairs tends to be more negative than positive because humans tend to give negative events more attention.
Negative stories can attract our attention and prepare us for disappointment. But if we don’t engage with positive ones, they might lead us to be more critical of the world, more defensive and less hopeful.
So I think sometimes what we hear, see, or even know might not be the whole picture. The truth might be hidden from us, requiring us to notice and discover it. We could start by asking ourselves whether we are focusing more on negative or positive stories and whether we are letting negative news surround us. Maybe even paying more attention to good news or making a point of sharing good news will help.
Anna’s attitude was remarkable. She went beyond the call of duty and, upon leaving, refused to accept anything but words as thanks.
Why not remind ourselves that, for all of the bad that’s in the world and in the news, behind the scenes, in people’s ordinary lives, still lie untold stories of extraordinary good.
8. How was Anna different from previous audiologists
A. She offered her patients personal assistance.
B. She displayed more ambition and professionalism.
C. She refused to accept payment for the hearing aid.
D. She paid little attention to her patients’ needs.
9. Why are news reports on current events usually more negative than positive
A. To warn people of potential risks. B. To attract audiences more effectively.
C. To encourage people to seek out the truth. D. To reveal the harshness of reality.
10. What is a potential consequence of focusing only on negative stories
A. Improved ability to cope with stress. B. Increased optimism and hope.
C. A reduced sense of security. D. A more objective view of the world.
11. What does the author suggest people do
A. Take advantage of others’ kindness. B. Share only positive news stories.
C. Engage more with strangers. D. Maintain a positive outlook on the world.
D
In an empty parking lot, a car “thinks” it is on a real road. Researchers at the Ohio State University have developed new software to aid in the development, evaluation and demonstration of safer driverless vehicles. Called the Vehicle-in-Virtual-Environment (VVE) method, it allows the testing of driverless cars in a perfectly safe environment, said Bilin Aksun-Guvene, co-author of the study and a professor of Ohio State.
Although autonomous driving technologies have become a much more common sight on the road in the last few years, due to the increasing number of accidents these systems have caused. the way these technologies are tested deserves closer observation.
Current approaches for demonstrating autonomous vehicle functions involve testing software and technology first in simulations (模拟) and then on public roads. Yet this method essentially turns other road users into involuntary participants in these driving experiments. Such risks can make the entire development process costly, inefficient, and potentially unsafe for both drivers and pedestrians (行人) alike.
To overcome the limitations of these faulty assessments, researchers in this study equipped a real vehicle with simulated data to connect its controls to a highly realistic 3D environment. much like giving the machine a VR headset or virtual reality glasses. After feeding the data to the driving system’s computers and syncing (同步) the car’s real motions with the simulations’, researchers were able to show that it behaves as if the virtual environment were its true surroundings in real time.
But what makes their software especially powerful, said Aksun-Guvenc, is the strength of how flexible their virtual environment can be. “When actual senses are replaced by virtual senses, the model can be easily changed to fit any kind of scenario,” said Guvenc.
“We could see this technology becoming an important product in the industry in the next 5 or 10 years. That’s why we’re focusing on building more applications for it.” Guvene added.
12. What can we say about autonomous driving
A. It is free of dangers. B. It definitely has a long way to go.
C. Its safety testing matters. D. Its technology is mature.
13. What are the features of VVE method
A. Safe and real. B. Easy and cheap.
C. Costly and inefficient. D. Tough and complicated.
14. What does the underlined word “scenario” in Paragraph 5 mean
A. Strategy. B. Experiment. C. Revision. D. Situation.
15. What is the best title for the text
A. Overcoming the Limitations of Autonomous Driving
B. Testing Real Driverless Cars in a Virtual Environment
C. Making Autonomous Driving More Common on the Road
D. Focusing on Building More Applications for Driverless Cars

Imagine you buy a new shirt and do not intend to buy a new jacket. You were perfectly happy with it until you wore it with the new shirt. However, you imagine that the new shirt makes the old jacket look worn. Then you can’t help buy a new jacket or even more to better fit the shirt. _____16_____The simplest description of it is the scenario of buying something new and replacing our old possessions with items to match the new one, even if that means an empty bank account. _____17_____
Become aware it is happening. Observe when you are being drawn into consumption not because you are in actual need of an item, but only because something new has been introduced.
_____18_____ A store may be having a great sale on a new outfit—but if the new outfit forces you to buy a new pair of shoes or handbag to match, it just became a more expensive purchase than originally assumed.
Avoid unnecessary new purchases. Realize the Diderot Effect is a significant force and overcoming it is very difficult. You may avoid replacing those end tables at first, but eventually, at some point down the road, you are going to break down and buy new ones that better match the new couch. _____19_____ But the best way to overcome the Diderot Effect is to never allow it to overpower you in the first place.
Remind yourself that possessions do not define you. _____20_____ Your possessions do not define you or your success—no matter what marketers will try to tell you.
A. Analyze and predict the full cost of future purchases.
B. Buy things for their usefulness rather than their status.
C We actually can employ this mind trick in the following ways.

47. 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A few years ago, the company I worked for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year.
I’ve always loved running, so I was really happy when I found out I lived next to Central Park. It meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work. Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of robbers in the park, so usually I didn’t take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything
But one morning, my wife gave me a $10 bill and asked me to buy some bread on the way. It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running through the park, another jogger knocked into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of robbers in the park occurred to me. “It could have been a robber!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket and found that the money was missing. Without thinking twice, I ran after that jogger. I finally caught up and held him by the arm. I shouted, “Give me the $10 bill! Now!” I am not usually a hot-headed (性急的) person, but I got really angry this time. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife my story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately stopped me, “I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.”
注意:
1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked.

Whenever musicians talk with me about their stage fright, I offer them this story.(从我在公共场合学习乐器的实验中,我学到了很多东西。每当音乐家和我谈论他们的怯场,我就给他们讲这个故事)”以及通读全文可知,文章主要讲述了作者在公开场合学习新乐器的经历,并从中发现了缓解舞台恐惧的方法。因此,合适的标题是C项“My Discovery to Ease Stage Fright(我缓解怯场的发现)”。故选C项。
28A细节理解题。根据第二段“Unlike the previous providers they’d been dealing with, Anna gave time and attention. Anna not only ensured the new hearing aid worked as it should, but also offered to go to my grandparents’ apartment to show them how to use it.(与他们之前接触的供应商不同,安娜付出了时间和精力。安娜不仅确保新助听器正常工作,而且还主动提出去我祖父母的公寓教他们如何使用它)”可知,安娜和以前的听力学家的不同在于她为病人提供个人帮助。故选A。
29B推理判断题。根据第四段“Then I came across a study that suggested news coverage of current affairs tends to be more negative than positive because humans tend to give negative events more attention.(然后我看到了一项研究,该研究表明,对时事的新闻报道往往是消极的,而不是积极的,因为人类倾向于给予负面事件更多的关注)”可推知,关于时事的新闻报道通常消极多于积极是为了更有效地吸引观众。故选B。
30 C推理判断题。根据倒数第四段“But if we don't engage with positive ones, they might lead us to be more critical of the world, more defensive and less hopeful.(但如果我们不与积极的人接触,他们可能会让我们对世界更挑剔,更有戒心,更不充满希望)”可推知,只关注负面故事的潜在后果是安全感降低。故选C。
31 D推理判断题。根据倒数第三段“Maybe even paying more attention to good news or making a point of sharing good news will help.(也许更多地关注好消息或强调分享好消息会有所帮助)”和最后一段“Why not remind ourselves that, for all of the bad that's in the world and in the news, behind the scenes, in people's ordinary lives, still lie untold stories of extraordinary good.(为什么不提醒我们自己,尽管世界上和新闻里有那么多不好的事情,但在幕后,在人们的日常生活中,仍然存在着不为人知的非凡美好的故事)”可推知,作者建议人们对世界保持积极的看法。故选D。
32C细节理解题。根据第二段中“due to the increasing number of accidents these systems have caused. the way these technologies are tested deserves closer observation.(由于自动驾驶系统造成的事故越来越多,这些科技的测试方式值得进一步审视)”可知,自动驾驶引发大量事故。由此可知,自动驾驶的安全测试尤为重要。故选C项。
33A he testing of driverless cars in a perfectly safe environment (这种方法被称为虚拟环境中的车辆(VVE)方法,它允许在完全安全的环境中测试自动驾驶汽车)”和第四段中“To overcome the limitations of these faulty assessments, researchers in this study equipped a real vehicle with simulated data to connect its controls to a highly realistic 3D environment. much like giving the machine a VR headset or virtual reality glasses. After feeding the data to the driving system’s computers and syncing (同步) the car’s real motions with the simulations’, researchers were able to show that it behaves as if the virtual environment were its true surroundings in real time.(为了克服这些错误评估的局限性,本研究中的研究人员为一辆真实的车辆配备了模拟数据,将其控制连接到高度逼真的3D环境。 故选A项。

小作文Dear Peter,
I know you are enthusiastic about Chinese food and drinks, so I am writing to recommend a popular Chinese drink for breakfast — soybean drink.
Just like tofu, soybean drink can also date back to the Han Dynasty. Its white color makes it look like milk, but it is actually made from beans. When heated, it gives off a refreshing smell. Additionally, it is not only delicious but also nutritious since it’s rich in vegetable protein.
If you are interested, why not have a try I’m sure you’ll fall in love with it.
Yours,
读后续写答案Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness” on my mind. How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth Why was it that the jogger gave me the money I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain.
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn’t turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally spotted him again. I, the “robber”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn’t matter.” Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth.
