Look at the sentences from the reading passage and answer the questions.

Compare sentences a and b with sentences c and d and answer the questions.
What is the difference between the two groups of sentences
Why does the author choose to use sentences (a) and (b) in the reading passage
The first group uses present participles as adverbial while the second group uses adverbial clauses.
The sentences from the reading passage are more concise and formal.
Now look for more sentences with this structure in the reading passage.
Dating back to the 18th century, Peking Opera has over two hundred years of history.
Starting with an orchestra playing traditional Chinese instruments, the opera brought a completely new sound to my Western ears.
Using such techniques, the opera had transformed a small stage into the whole universe.
Feeling the strong emotions of love, anger, fear and grief in it, I could easily recognize the theme of Hamlet.
Present Participle as Adverbial
现在分词作状语
现在分词短语做状语时,可以表示谓语动作发生的时间、原因、条件、让
步、方式、伴随、程度和结果。【状语中就差不能作目的状语了!】
例如:
1) 作时间状语
Seeing the police, he made a run for the exit.
一看到警察,他就朝出口奔去。
2) 作原因状语
Being well taken care of, she recovered soon.
由于受到了很好的照顾,她身体恢复得很快。
3) 作条件状语
It will take you half an hour to get to the station, allowing for(考虑到,估计到) traffic delays. 把路上的交通延误算进去,你要用半小时才能到车站。
4) 作让步状语
Granting(that)(即使,假定) this to be true, we cannot explain it.
虽然我们承认这是事实,却无法予以说明。(这里granting that多数都认为可作连词。)
现在分词短语做状语时,可以表示谓语动作发生的时间、原因、条件、让步、方式、伴随、程度和结果。【状语中就差不能作目的状语了!】
例如:
5) 作方式状语
You gave me such a fright creeping up(慢慢/蹑手蹑脚爬上来) on me like that! 你那样不声不响地从后面过来,吓了我一跳。
6) 作伴随状语
The little boy went upstairs, trailing(拖,拉) his teddy (泰迪)bear behind him. 那个小男孩走上楼去,身后拖着他的泰迪玩具熊。
7) 作程度状语 这种用法有限,相当于程度副词,主要用于加强语气。
He was caught in the heavy rain and got his clothes soaking(浸泡,湿透) wet. 他淋了一场大雨,把衣服全部弄湿了。
8) 作结果状语
The child fell, striking his head against the door and cutting it.
那孩子跌倒了,头碰在门上磕破了。
如何区分谓语动词和分词动词?
对我们初学者来说,当一个句子里出现两个动词时,往往不知道该用哪个动词作谓语,哪个动词作分词。下面介绍四点规律,供参考。
1.表示行为的动词作谓语,表心理活动的动词作分词。如:
I stopped at the crossroads, wondering which road I should take.
我在岔路口停住了,不知道该走哪条路。
2.若两个动词均为表行为动词,表示整体动作的动词作谓语,表示部分动作的动词作分词。如:
He jumped and jumped, moving his arms. 他跳着,挥动着手臂。
3.stand, sit, lie等多用作谓语,其他动词作分词。如:
He stood there looking out of the window.他站在那儿往窗外看。
4.表达主要思想的动词作谓语,其补充说明的动词作分词。如:
(While) Walking along the shore, she met a friend of hers.
她沿海岸走着时遇到了一个朋友。
以上只是一般规律,有时还要依上下文而定。

分词所表示的动作与主句谓语所表示的动作(几乎)同时发生
分词所表示的动作先于主句谓语所表示的动作发生
原因、条件、让步、时间、结果、方式、伴随
注意:现在分词做状语时,前面可能加上when, while, as if, even if, though, although, unless 等从属连词,可视为状语从句的省略。
e.g., While (he was) waiting for the bus, he met Mary.

芭蕾舞剧《牡丹亭》
昨晚我去看了芭蕾舞剧《牡丹亭》。因为我原以为芭蕾舞剧到处都差不多,我对它的独特美没有丝毫准备。大幕已拉开,我就被吸引住了。表演借用了大量中国舞蹈和音乐元素,由此看出东方文化对芭蕾舞的影响很清晰。作品富有色彩和浪漫符号,而且也以新的方式挑战我的感受。我是如此喜爱它以至于改变了我对芭蕾舞的看法。我有点迫不及待地再去看看。

Dating back to the 1970s, Glastonbury Festival is a music and arts festival that takes place on a large farm in Somerset in South-west England. Most of the organisers are volunteers and much of the money raised from ticket sales goes to charity. Many famous bands have performed at the festival over the years,
and the number of people attending has grown to about 200,000.
