The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says deforestation(森林采伐) still continues at “a warning speed” around the world. Deforestation is mainly caused by the cutting down of forests to provide land for agriculture. About 13 million hectares(公顷) of forest were cut down or lost each year in the last 10 years.
The FAO found that South America and Africa had the highest loss of forests. And Australia also suffered (遭受) huge losses because of drought (干旱). But some countries have improved their forest policies (政策) and laws. For example in China, India and Vietnam, they got more than 2 million hectares a year in the last 10 years because of tree-planting programs. In Europe, it also continues to enlarge.
However, the rate of deforestation is still very high in many areas and forests undisturbed (未被打扰的) by human activity continues to decrease. So we must further strengthen our efforts (努力) to protect the trees and plants on the earth.
