I was born with asthma and I never thought I’d be a runner! I only joined my local athletics club because my doctor told me that in my particular case exercise could improve how my lungs work. But before I knew it, I was taking part in local races. As my fitness and my running improved, I started running in national competitions. This year I won silver in the under 18’s 10,000 metres! And who knows, next year I could win gold!

▲4.improve vt. & vi. 改善，提高；使完善（通常指好的东西）
He has improved in English.
= He has been improved in English.
=His English has improved.
=His English has been improved.
=He has improved his English.
=He has improved himself in English.
他提高了英语水平。（他的英语水平得到了提高）以上六句都对！
In the days which followed I tried to improve.

▲5.before从属连词，还没有来得及，还没...就...，相当于not， 引导时间状语从句，表示从句动作发生之前，主句动作已经发生了。所以该从句只能用肯定式，不可用否定式。此时，从句多用过去完成时，主句多用过去式。
You have to reflect on how to answer his question before you get to his house.
在到达他家之前你必须考虑好如何回答他提出的问题。（对比before表
示“在...之前”）

※before从句中有know, realize, understand, feel等动词时，常表示事情正在不知不觉中进行。例如：
She was so interested in the book that she would have read it for three hours
before she realized it.
她看书太入迷了，竟不知不觉时间已经过了三个小时。
We opened the fire before the enemy knew what was happening.
我们开始炮击时，敌人还蒙在鼓里。
▲6.who knows 天晓得；鬼知道；谁知道（呢）【美国俚语用Ghosts know，暗指鬼才知道】英语中有一条“就主语提问，主语不明，视为单数”。
After that, who knows 在那之后，谁知道呢？
Who knows what they look like 谁知道他们长什么样子呢？
But who knows, maybe I’ll never go back!
但谁知道呢，也许我再也不会去了。
Who knows how much of the gossip（流言蜚语） was true.

Not so long ago, I didn’t do any exercise --- not even any jogging! Then I discovered an app called Running Power. It lists your performance against other runners in your social network. At first, I kept running just to see my name in the top five. Soon, I found that I was not alone --- I came across other runners in the same area running for the same purpose! Now I no longer use the app, but I’ve fallen in love with running, and still do it with my running friends.

▲7.called被称之为……，过去分词短语作定语，类似用法很多，需要注意。一般来说，过去分词短语作定语，表示动作已经完成（过去发生的动作）或者没有时间性，它与所修饰的名词或代词有逻辑上的动宾关系。

今早有个叫高红的女孩给我打电话吗？
That is what is called easy money, but easy come easy go.
所谓倘来之物，易来易去。
I don’t know anyone called Scott. 我不认识叫斯科特的人。
He is a good teacher loved by all the students.
他是一位受所有学生爱戴的老师。（没有时间性）
※过去分词短语、现在分词的被动式和不定式的被动式作定语区别：
均表被动（即与被修饰词有逻辑上的动宾关系），其区别在于：过去发生的动作用过去分词，目前发生的动作用现在分词被动式，一个将要发生的动作用不定式被动式。如：
The question discussed yesterday is very important.
昨天讨论的那个问题很重要。
The question being discussed now is very important.
现在讨论的这个问题很重要。
The question to be discussed tomorrow is very important.
明天要讨论的问题很重要。
▲8.list sth. against sb. 列出来某事与某人对比/对抗（往往有以弱对抗强者之义）。
He listed several my mistakes against his classmates.
他列举了好几条我的错误和他的同学对比。
The scientist listed many their rice plants against the plants in the nature.
这位科学家把很多他们的水稻植株同自然界当中的进行对照。
※很多及物动词后边加宾语都可和against连用，表示这种对比、对抗，以示迎战或对抗，有以弱示强的含义。
The army in this country defend their land against invasion.
这个国家的军队捍卫他们的国土免遭侵略。
The class decided to compete with their sister class against singing competition. 这个班级决心同姊妹班级进行歌咏比赛对抗。

▲11.fall in love with sb./sth.爱上某人（表示短暂动作，不能延续），迷上某事
be in love with sb. 与某人相爱（表示状态，可延续）

As a computer engineer, there’s always a new challenge just around the corner! It can be quite stressful at times, though, which in turn makes me feel anxious. To help deal with this, I go running as often as I possibly can. Whether I’m at the gym or on the road, my nervous energy pushes me through mile one. By mile two, the tension has moved from my mind to my legs. By the end of the run, all my stress has disappeared and I’m ready to face the next day at work!

Nervous energy builds up at this time and it certainly needs a positive outlet(出口，发泄途径). 精神性能量会在此时积聚并必然需要发泄途径。

The funniest moment was when someone watching the race offered me a banana --- a real treat for a running gorilla! I had a great day out in London, as well as helping to save gorillas!
