Included in UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list, Chinese shadow puppetry (皮影戏) is considered one of the nation’s oldest forms of material performance. Annie Katsura Rollins, who is based in Toronto and researching Chinese shadow puppetry, has spent years developing expertise (专业技能) in Chinese shadow puppetry and making great efforts to help it survive a battle with cultural changes, urbanization, and modern forms of entertainment.
“There’s an antediluvial understanding of what tradition is,” says Rollins.“We think it’s old and what once was. Actually, traditions are always changing in history and we just fail to witness it. To survive, the tradition needs to be with the present and be looking toward the future.”
Rollins was in charge of the exhibition “Immaterial Remains: Can You Preserve a Shadow ”, which aimed to not only display the art form but also focus on the question of how to preserve shadow puppetry in China. In the exhibition, the finely carved details of clothing, facial features, and hair were obvious in the shadows of the puppets, which were in motion as air flowed, bringing them to life on the walls. Samples of the dried cowhide (牛皮) used to make the puppets were available for visitors to touch and feel. A video demonstrated how the puppets are made and operated. Rollins notes, “If you can eat with chopsticks, you too can work a shadow puppet.”
She says the years she spent learning from master puppeteers in small villages remain the best way to carry on the traditions of Chinese shadow puppetry into the future, which she describes as practitioner-led (由从业者主导的) creativity. “I think that is the key to really keeping the form growing, developing, and relevant to current society and culture,” Rollins says. “We need to emphasize the live performance as a method of preservation so that every time it’s performed, it’s being continued in its original form rather than in pictures or videos. Those things only show part of what a live performance is.”
1. What is one thing that Rollins has devoted herself to for years
A. Digging into Chinese shadow puppetry.
B. Promoting changes in cultural dynamics
C. Holding exhibitions to preserve Chinese shadow puppetry.
D. Introducing modern forms of entertainment into city life
2. What does the underlined word “antediluvial” in paragraph 2mean
A. Old- fashioned. B. Comprehensive. C. Flexible. D. Valuable
3. What is the purpose of the exhibition mentioned in paragraph 3
A. To demonstrate the popularity of Chinese shadow puppetry.
B. To show various stories presented by Chinese shadow puppetry.
C. To highlight the historical significance of Chinese shadow puppetry.
D. To explore effective strategies to preserve Chinese shadow puppetry.
4. What is Rollins’ advice on preserving the traditions of Chinese shadow puppetry
A. Showing the puppets in exhibitions and museums.
B. Setting up workshops and modernizing traditional puppetry.
C. Learning from masters and providing live performances.
D. Documenting the performances through pictures and videos.

Every morning, crowds of London commuters (通勤者) walk heavily through the underground and cyclists race beside the noisy traffic. Meanwhile I’ve been peacefully paddling (用浆划) up the Thames to work in Kevin, my inflatable kayak (充气皮划艇). Even if the weather is terrible, it’s still hugely enjoyable to disconnect from the London bustle (喧嚣).
I usually blow Kevin up the night before so that in the morning I can jump straight in and paddle to the city from my home in Putney. I row along the south bank. It’s a busy river, and fairly fast flowing. I’ve had several near misses with bridges. There’s no GPS needed. I just carry a marine radio, my mobile phone, wall et and suit. I row to the Houses of Parliament and then reach the shore at the steps near Cannon Street and, balancing Kevin on my head, walk through the city.
The idea of kayaking to work came from a fundraising event that I did last year on the Thames. Twelve mates and I got into blow-up kayaks and paddled along, stopping at various places to raise money. I then realized I could use the inflatable kayak to get to work: what a way to turn a fairly tiring journey into the best part of the day! I started loving my commute!
My mornings with Kevin are drawing to a close, though, as I’m escaping for an adventure in June. With my fellow adventurer, I am kayaking from Greenland to Iceland.
I think a spell in the great outdoors is very humbling. In London everything is so easy. It rains and you put up an umbrella; you’re hungry and you buy something from a shop. Only when you’ re out in the wild can you realize how little control over your life you really have.
5. What does the author think about commuting by inflatable kayak
A. It is time-consuming. B. It is risky in bad weather.
C. It helps him save money. D. It gives him pleasure.
6. What is paragraph 2 mainly about
A. How the author commutes in his kayak.
B. An introduction to kayaking in London.
C. A description of the author’s outdoor experience.
D. What difficulties the author encounters on his way to work.
7. What made the author come up with the idea of commuting in a kayak
A. A fundraising experience. B. A tiring commuting journey.
C. A piece of advice from his fellow adventurer. D. A kayaking trip from Greenland to Iceland.
8. What does the author want to express in the last paragraph
A. Staying outdoors improves people’s overall health.
B. People in cities have little chance to interact with nature.
C. Everyone should know the essential skills to survive in the wild.
D. Spending time in nature inspires people to be respectful of nature.
C
If you were to place all the rice consumed each year on one side of a scale (天平), and every person in the world on the other, the scale would tip heavily towards rice's favor. This be loved crop contributes over 20% of the calories consumed by humans each year.
The roots of rice go back thousands of years to when early farmers in Asia, Africa, and South America each independently planted the crop. Asian rice, however, spread widely and is now a cornerstone of diet and culture in Asia and beyond.
Many plant geneticists believe that Asian rice originated in what’s now China. Over 10,000 years ago, nomadic (游牧的) hunters in the region began gathering and eating seeds from a weedy grass. Around 9,000 years ago, they started planting these seeds. With each harvest, growers selected and replanted seeds from the rice plants that pleased them most — like those with bigger grains. Over thousands of years, thousands of varieties of Asian rice emerged.
Traditionally, growers plant rice in paddy fields — flat land submerged (淹没) under as much as 10 centimeters of water throughout the growing season. This practice return s high yields since many competing weeds can’t survive in such an environment. But the technique consumes plenty of water. Rice covers 11% of global cropland, but uses over a third of the world’s irrigation water (灌溉用水).
This form of rice production also produces a surprising quantity of greenhouse gases. Flooded fields are the perfect breeding grounds for microorganisms known as methanogens (产甲烷菌). The rice farming contributes around 12% of human-caused methane emissions each year.
Greenhouse gases come from many — sometimes unexpected — places. Making rice growing more sustainable is just one of the many challenges we’ll need to face to avoid disastrous warming. Today, many rice growers still flood fields all season long. Changing old practices requires a major mindset shift, but going against the grain could be just what we need to keep our planet healthy and our bowls full.
9. What is paragraph 3 mainly about
A. The history of Asian rice. B. The influence of Asian rice.
C. The farming of Asian rice. D. The advantage of Asian rice.
10. What is the advantage of growing rice in paddy fields
A. It can make the rice more delicious.
B. It can protect the rice from other weeds.
C. It can enable rice to adapt to a variety of climates.
D. It can reduce the amount of water needed for irrigation.
11. What can we learn about the current way of planting rice
A. It is facing more and more challenges.
B. It has been unable to meet the demand for rice.
C. It requires the introduction of new technologies.
D. It should be improved to be environmentally friendly.
12. In which section of a newspaper will the text appear

At first, Michael Surrell didn’t see the black smoke or flames shooting from the windows of his neighbors’ home.He and his wife had just parked around the corner from their own house in Allentown, Pennsylvania, when they got a call from one of his daughters:“The house next door is on fire!” He went to investigate. That’s when he saw a woman crying desperately on their porch.
“The baby’s in there!” the woman cried.Though the fire department had been called, Surrell, then 64, instinctively ran inside.“The baby” was 8 year old Tiara Roberts, the woman’s granddaughter.
“Entering the burning house was like running into a bucket of black paint,” Surrell says. The thick smoke caused him to stumble blindly around, burned his eyes, and
made it impossible to breathe. The conditions would have been dangerous to anyone, but for Surrell, who has chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (慢性阻塞性肺病), they were life threatening.
After a few minutes in the smoke filled house, he retreated outside to catch his breath.Surrell knew he couldn’t hold his breath for long.Taking a deep breath, he went in a second time. The darkness was overwhelming.Yet because the house had a similar layout (布局) to his, he found the stairs and made it to the second floor. He turned to the right and was met by intense heat.He was already out of breath.
His throat and lungs burned as if he’d breathed in fire instead of the smoke and soot in the air.Every blink stung his eyes. All he could hear was the crackling and popping of burning wood. Then a soft but distinct moan (呻吟声) emerged.Still unable to see, Surrell fell to his knees on the hot wood floor. He crawled toward the sound, feeling around for any sign of the girl.

【答案】Finally, he touched something—a shoe, then an ankle. He pulled Tiara toward him. Her body was weak and she wasn’t breathing. He hugged her into his arms and stood. He felt the heat of the flames on his cheeks. Turning, he fought through the smoke and ran blindly into the blackness. Surrell put Tiara down on the porch. He started CPR—the first time he’d ever done so. Soon she opened her eyes and took a breath on her own. Surrel’s throat closed off.
Surrell woke up in the hospital a couple of days later. He suffered severe burns to his windpipe and the upper portion of his lungs. He spent over a week in the hospital. The fire worsened Surrell’s pulmonary condition, and he feels the effects even two years later. As a result, he takes extra medication that helps open his airways. “It’s a small price to pay.” he says. “I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Wouldn’t give it a second thought.”
