It was late, about 10:15 p .m. when Janice Esposito safely arrived at the Bellport, New York, train station; she happily jumped into her little car, and couldn't wait to begin the 20-minute drive home to see her loved husband and seven-year-old son . She had just returned from visiting her older mother in Los Angles and had traveled the route many times before . She drove on autopilot(自动驾驶) practically and skillfully: a left onto Station Road, then a left on Montauk Highway, and then suddenly—wham!
Out of nowhere on that awful night a truck hit Janice's car, violently pushing her to move backward some 100 feet away onto the railroad tracks . She sat in the car, bruised(撞伤) but mostly just knocked out by the impact and by the vehicle's airbags .
As it happened, Pete DiPinto was getting ready for bed . He'd just closed his book, turned off the light and was lazily crawling under the covers when he heard the high-pitched clang sound of metal on metal and breaking glass coming from not far outside his bedroom window . As a volunteer firefighter and retired teacher, DiPinto, 64, instantly became alert and never stopped to think . He quickly grabbed a big professional flashlight out of habit, put his own cellphone in the pocket of his pajamas(睡衣), and hurriedly ran out the door without getting changed . "Any firefighter would have done what I did," he later told Newsday . "We're always on duty."
The first truck DiPinto came upon, 2,000 feet away from his front yard, was the one that had hit Janice, who was trapped in her car still, her eyes closed and her mind semiconscious . He looked around and spotted one wheel of Janice's car positioned on the railroad tracks.

"You signed us up for what " Lu's eyes widened as Jamie grinned at her. "A charity bike ride. It'd be fun!" She stared at him open-mouthed. "Fun But I haven't ridden a bike for years, Jamie. And I hate exercise! How long is this ride " Lu could feel her muscle shrinking at the mere thought of it.
"Only 20 kilometers."
Lucinda swiped the brightly coloured leaflet advertising the bike ride from her husband's hand. "Twenty kilometres That's a half marathon, Jamie!"
She tossed the leaflet back at him. "Well you can count me out. I'm not fit enough to run five minutes round the block, let alone hours on a bike."
"But you will be in a couple of months. I thought we could train for it together." Jamie patted his beer belly. "I'm not exactly in great shape at the moment. And you' re always saying we don't get to spend enough time together!" He gave her his best winning grin.
A smile fell across Lucinda's lips. It was true, she was always saying that lately. Though spending her weekends cycling was not exactly what she'd had in mind.
A wave of sadness spun through her heart. The past few months had been... difficult. She had lost her job and was struggling to find a new one. Being at home, scrolling through job adverts and waiting for interview replies, had left her feeling stuck. Jamie had been working extra hours to support financially, but that only added to her guilt. Despite trying to stay positive, life had somehow skidded to a stop.
"I'm not sure," Lu sighed.
"It's not a race, but a joy ride, Lu." Jamie reassured her, nudging her playfully. "Plus, I've already rented us a tandem bike(双人自行车)!"
"A tandem " Lu's eyes flashed with horror. "Are you mad " She stared at him. "You're not even joking, are you " Doubts crept into her mind as she imagined the challenges of coordinating their movements on a shared bike.

As a young boy, I was carefree. Every vacation I looked forward to two things—seeing my grandpa and hearing his wonderful stories. My grandpa was a very good storyteller. He had worked various odd jobs when he was young and wove his adventures and misadventures into fantastic tales. These wonderful tales colored my childhood.
As I grew up, I had to admit that Grandpa’s stories went on a little long, even a little boring and gradually lost their magic. However, not wanting to upset him, my brother and I would sometimes take turns sitting in the living room, listening to grandpa tell his stories.
When my grandpa was approaching 91, he suffered from serious memory-loss. It was kind of what doctors called dementia (痴呆), probably the earliest stage of Alzheimer’s disease. Following the doctor’s directions, we moved him into a Sunrise Assisted Living Community, where he could get a better care. After that, grandpa hardly came to our house.
One weekend before my grandpa’s birthday, I came to visit him. Seeing grandpa sitting in his armchair, dull-looking, I was consumed with mixed feelings. I wheeled grandpa to the sunshine in the courtyard, talking to him. He couldn’t express himself clearly and spoke in short bursts, but I listened to him patiently and carefully just as I used to be a little boy.
It was then that I noticed a shadow box with some old and yellowish photos in it. I picked one up, in which my brother, several boys in our neighborhood, and I were playing basketball with grandpa cheering us on twenty years before. My mind flashed back to those beautiful memories. Back then, Grandpa was in good physical condition and we were all wearing basketball jerseys, playing and laughing with abandon. I presented the photo to my grandpa, pointing at each member and reminding him of their names. Incredibly, grandpa could speak out the name of every player. I even caught a soft light in grandpa’s eyes and a smile on his lips.

It was early spring in Fairbanks, and puppies were blossoming like flowers among melting snow in Susie's dog yard. "How can I ever turn you into a winning team " Susie said, laughing. She'd dreamed of winning the yearly Dog Sled Championships Race.
"Which pups will you choose " Susie's mother asked. "I think I'll just choose three of four Aurora's pups," Susie said, but she knew that only three of these little puppies would make it to the big race. Although Aurora's pups were only four weeks old, Susie already saw differences among them. Pluto was naughty, while Sunshine was shy, and Foxy was a tease. Fudge was the most responsive to her. Actually. Fudge was the smallest one.
"Will you be my lead dog someday when your mother Aurora is old " Susie said, holding Fudge's tiny face to hers. "He's awfully small," Susie's mother said. His brothers and sisters were already twice his size. "He'll grow fast," Susie said. "I'll train him right along with the others."
Training puppies was a family affair. Susie's mother and father raised thirteen strong dogs. Susie planned to make her best team this time. Susie trained each of them for their roles. Aurora was surely the leader of her four-dog team. As for Fudge, Susie would also give Fudge a small branch when she often let team dogs pull branches as a kind of training. He kept pulling it even when the other pups knocked him over. He kept working at tasks that Susie gave him, no matter how tired he got. Susie loved him for trying so hard.
When spring snow melted into summer, Susie ran her pups through flowered fields and wooded hills to keep them in shape. She felt delighted when Aurora proved to be a good leader and the team did well. Unexpectedly, Fudge got the summer growth that she hadn't counted on. Though not officially belonging to the team, every practice, Fudge did his best beyond Susie had imagined.

On my twelfth birthday, my mother handed me a square box, saying it was something I had wanted for a long time. Excitedly, I opened it to find a fluffy, white puppy (小狗) inside. Overjoyed, I named her Snowball. I started to train Snowball right away, having her walk by my side on a leash (拴狗的皮带). I decided to take her for a short walk down a nearby, quiet lane.
As we turned into the lane, we saw an old woman in her yard. She noticed my new dog and introduced herself as Alice, approaching us while dragging an aluminum canister (铝罐) on wheels. Sitting near her gate, she explained that the machine helped her breathe. I tried not to stare.
"What is this little one's name " she asked.
I picked up my puppy and placed her on Alice's lap. "Her name is Snowball and mine is Jamie," I replied. "I just got her for my birthday today!"
"It's very nice to meet you, Jamie and Snowball, and a very Happy Birthday to you," Alice said. Soon Alice had lost herself, snuggling (依偎) with Snowball. With Alice's eyes closed, I felt it was okay to study her breathing machine. It reminded me of something out of a science fiction book. When I looked back at Alice, I saw her petting the calm dog and softly singing to her. As I watched, I saw tears roll slowly down Alice's cheeks.
I asked what was wrong, and she explained that holding my dog reminded her of the dog she had years ago. She then returned my dog, expressing her love for little dogs and hoping we would visit again. However, I thought to myself that I wouldn't return, not wanting to see her with her scary breathing machine.

One day in the 1990s, I was helping my brother move from a teaching job after college. He was driving his little pickup truck pulling a trailer (拖车) and I was driving my old little Ford station car, packed with his things.
It was a Sunday. I was driving along. All of a sudden, my car just died. No warning, nothing. I stopped at the side of a country highway and waited for my brother to realize I wasn't behind him anymore and turn around. After about 20 minutes, he did return to find me. However, neither of us knew much about cars. After waiting for what seemed to be a century, a man, introducing himself as Jerry, came out of nowhere, took one look at the engine and said, "Timing belt."
We had asked about getting the car pulled 30 miles to the closest large town on the phone, only to find that it was going to be an expensive repair, even if the engine was OK. Just at this moment, Jerry saw the difficult situation. He saw two poor kids in their early 20s struggling with life, and he said, "Well, it's Sunday. Nothing's going to be open. I tell you what I will do. My next-door neighbor is a repairman. Let's push the car down to his repair shop and we'll see what we can do."
So we did exactly as Jerry told us. Jerry's neighbor called his friend at the auto parts store, which was closed on Sunday. He did a favor and got the parts needed, driving them 30 miles out to the repair shop. And we sat around, telling our stories on the way while the car was being fixed.
The repairman's son, a kid of about 9 or 10, was hanging around. After some chatting, we learned that he was extremely bored as no one played with him.

On a sunny Friday morning, Mr. Stone, the Grade 4 head teacher, walked into the classroom with a new student following him. She was a lively girl from Mexico, and her red mushroom hair cut immediately drew everyone's eyes. With a welcoming smile, Mr. Stone gestured for her to sit beside Mike, a student known for teasing others.
During break time, Mike couldn't help but laugh when he caught sight of his new deskmate. Sara's distinctive hairstyle seemed like an open invitation for him to make fun of her. Leaning in towards Sara, he playfully suggested, "Hey, Sara. Ever thought about changing your name to Dora You look just like Dora the Explorer!" His words caused laughter and cheers from the others in the classroom.
Sara's eyes filled with tears, her cheeks turning red with embarrassment. Feeling hurt and upset, she stood up suddenly, rushing to the teacher's office to seek support from Mr. Stone. After hearing her story, Mr. Stone offered her gentle comfort, saying, "Sara, your hairstyle is truly pretty. Remember, everyone has their own sense of beauty."
Mr. Stone then directed his attention to Mike, expressing his disappointment and urging Mike to apologize to Sara. "Mike," he continued, "your actions were unkind. We must treat everyone with empathy(同情). Laughing at Sara's hair has deeply hurt her."
This conflict was temporarily settled, but Mr. Stone found himself lost in thought. Reflecting on his own childhood, Mr. Stone recalled how he had been teased for being overweight. The pain caused by hurtful words was like wrinkles on a crumpled(压皱的)ball of paper. Even if you smoothed them out, the wrinkles stayed.
He wanted to teach an important lesson to Mike, the troublemaker. Then, a unique strategy came to mind. He contacted Mike's mother, explaining the situation and discussing a plan with her to develop empathy in her son. They agreed that over the weekend, Mike's mother would arrange for Mike to have his hair cut extremely short.

I was confident at the audition(试演) for the school play and felt pleased to get a role. It just felt good to be in the play, even if I had only four or five lines. I worked hard at perfecting those lines. I repeated them over and over again. I put in the emphases and intonations(语调) that my drama teacher had suggested and, because I was onstage much longer than for just four or five lines, I had many actions to rehearse(排练) and perform. "Do them in front of a mirror," my drama teacher had advised me. "Watch how you look; practice and rehearse as often as you can." I did just that. I worked and worked at it. It was fun and exciting rehearsing.
Then finally the big night came. Suddenly, things felt different. The theater was full of people. As I dressed, I could hear the chatting and noises of the audience. I looked around at the other more experienced actors and saw that their previous confidence seemed to have disappeared. Had they got their makeup right Was the costume done up correctly What if they forgot their lines The more people talked about their anxiety, the more nervous everyone became. The worries spread from person to another—like a baton(接力棒) being passed in a relay race-until the whole of the backstage area seemed to be full of tension and worry.
I was onstage early, at first performing my non-spoken role in the background with several other guys around the same age. When, suddenly, I heard my cue, the lights were bright in my eyes, I couldn't see the audience but knew there were hundreds of people out there all watching me. The words that had flowed so easily when I stood in front of a mirror didn't want to come, and when they did I found myself hurrying into them. I tried to slowdown my thoughts and my words.

Actually, the first training session did not go well. The moment they picked up the bicycle, the sky filled with drizzle and Lucinda’s mood turned dark. “This is stupid, Jamie,” she scowled, “What on earth are we doing here ” Jamie, however, beamed brightly and held the bicycle steady for her to climb on. Along the track, they were greeted with friendly greetings and cheers from Sunday morning walkers. And there was Jamie, always by her side, softly encouraging and cheering her. As the hours passed, they were both sweating buckets. Gone with the sweat were Lucinda’s groans and concerns. Weeks slipping by, Lucinda found herself actually looking forward to their weekend rides. Her muscles grew stronger and their progress became evident, instilling a newfound sense of hope and optimism.
Paragraph 2:
It seemed cycling had truly got their lives moving forward again. Jamie was in quite good shape his belly tight now. Last week Lucinda received happy news out of the blue -a job offer from one of her many applications and interviews! Finally, the big day came. Lucinda was surprised by the bustling scene: friends, families, spectators and a crazy collection of cyclists - some in fancy dress, others in serious cycle gear. As they waited, Jamie glanced over his shoulder. “I’m really proud of you, you know.” Lucinda grinned. “For the job offer, or this ” Jamie smiled. “Both. You never gave up, even when things seemed impossible.” “And you never gave up on me. Now look at us!” she laughed. With the whistle buzzing and horns blaring, they joined the stream of enthusiastic cyclists and flew along amidst the thunderous cheers of the crowd. In that moment, Lucinda felt her heart spinning with happiness.

A bright idea for grandpa’s birthday came to my mind. “Why not give grandpa a surprise ” I said to myself. I immediately got down to carrying out my plan. Luckily, I contacted all the players in the photo. To my great delight, they were greatly touched by the plan and all agreed to join in. To make the scene real, I even managed to find all the basketball jerseys, equipment and arrange for a similar-looking basketball court. The big day finally came. After wheeling my grandpa to the court, we began the special game. While playing, I kept an eye on grandpa, waiting for something deep down.
Paragraph 2:
Seeing “the same players” playing there, grandpa seemed to have thought of something. Glancing at grandpa again, I found him cheering us on just like 20 years before. Sitting in the warm sunlight, he cheered and clapped, with a bigger smile. For a while, my mind seemed to flash back to those beautiful days. Indeed, my plan somewhat worked. I was overjoyed that I could do something to delight Grandpa, an important person in my 1ife. I was not sure whether this birthday would stick in his mind, but one thing was certain: it’d definitely stick in mine.

Paragraph 1:
I lay awake for a long time that night. Snowball snuggled at my feet, softly snoring, while my mind was anything but settled. Alice's smiling face and the deep loneliness in her eyes kept replaying in my head. Although I really didn't want to go back to that place with the noise of her breathing machine weighing me down, a sense of responsibility and sympathy for Alice weighed heavier. I recalled how gently Alice had petted Snowball, her soft humming still echoing in my ears. Seeing the tears roll down her cheeks made me realize how painful her past losses must have been. I decided to visit her again.
Paragraph 2:
The next morning I tied Snowball to her leash and took a turn into the lane where Alice lived. As we approached Alice's house, my heart started to race. I was still afraid to hear the unsettling sound of her breathing machine. But when I saw Alice sitting in her small yard, my heart softened. Alice's eyes shone with tears as she gently petted Snowball. "Thank you, Jamie," Alice said softly, her voice filled with gratitude. "You've made my morning so special." I suddenly realized that sometimes giving a bit of time and care could bring great happiness to someone else.

Paragraph 1:
The boy badly desired someone to help build a treehouse in the woods. Pointing to the woods behind us, he said to us animatedly, "Would you like to see my treehouse " My brother and I exchanged a knowing look, smiling, "Sure." The little boy, hopping up and down with uncontainable excitement, led us into the woods. He proudly explained to us that he came here every day to build the house in an attempt to drive off his loneliness. We ended up spending two hours with this charming kid, helping him complete the treehouse.
Paragraph 2:
When we went back to the repair shop, the car had been all fixed. Eager to show our appreciation, my brother and I offered the total of $60 in cash that we had on us to the kind man. However, he firmly refused, just saying, "No, you need help, and I'm glad to offer it. Besides, you have given my son company for so long and he is over the moon now. I really appreciate it." It was then that we had a profound understanding of the saying: What you give away will invariably come back to you in another form.

Paragraph 1:
On Monday morning, Mike unwillingly approached the classroom. Feeling nervous and embarrassed, his heart was heavy with worry that his classmates would tease him. His hair had been cut so short that the skin under the hair was nearly visible. As he stepped through the door, the room erupted in giggles, nicknaming him "Baldy." A few curious boys came up and attempted to touch his newly shaved head. Overwhelmed by shame and anger, Mike shouted out, "You are mean!" Tears welled up in his eyes as Mike stood up and ran towards the door.
Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Mr. Stone walked into the classroom with a ball of paper. With a gentle pat on Mike's shoulder, he guided him back to his seat. As Mr. Stone made his way to the platform, the room fell silent. Holding up the crumpled ball of paper, he began to smooth out its wrinkles. "Each fold represented a scar of hurtful words. Even when we try to apologize," Mr. Stone explained softly, "the wounds remain. Let us always speak with kindness and warmth." From that day on, Mike learned a valuable lesson: the importance of kindness and empathy.

Paragraph 1:
But I suddenly realized I had missed a sentence. At that moment, so nervous was I that I did not know what to do. To my surprise, I happened to spot my drama teacher standing right in the audience area. Her encouraging smile made me feel ease. Taking a deep breath, I found my way back to the best state of myself. Refreshed and confident, I continued my performance without being affected much by the minor mistake. When the drama ended, the theater was flooded with the thunderous applause.
Paragraph 2:
I bowed to the audience excitedly and went back to my drama teacher. I had thought that I would get a scolding for my mistake. However, to my surprise, my drama teacher just patted me on the shoulder, saying "Your performance may not have been perfect but for the first time, it was great." Hearing that, I hugged her tightly, with tears blurring my eyes. I made up my mind to do better onstage next time, for life is not a rehearsal and every day is a live broadcast.
