In my first high school year I joined my school’s color guard (掌旗仪仗队) because I thought it would be fun learning to toss (抛) a flag. At first it was easy, but a couple of months later we were taught the single-and-a-half toss. We tossed our flag so that it would turn one and a half times in the air and we had to catch the pole (旗杆) straight up and down with the flag at the top. Sometimes I dropped it, and other times it went to one side when I tossed my flag. After an hour I was the only one who couldn’t do it.
Our teacher, Angie, asked me to keep practicing while everyone else got to relax. I felt ashamed (羞愧) as my teammates watched me fail so many times. Finally I got so tired of the toss that I didn’t care whether I did it right.
“Are you giving it up ” Angie asked.
“Yes, I am.” I shouted at her. She sent me inside the waiting room. There I was allowed to cry out my frustration (沮丧). Then Angie came in and said, “You are trying to be too perfect.” She told me never to give up. She left me alone and I realized Angie was right—by giving up, I was also giving up on the team and myself. I kept practicing and by the next practice I had mastered (掌握) the toss.

My parents seldom encouraged me to ask for help, so I trained myself to become as independent as possible. I thought if I asked for help, I would be a problem to other people. A few years ago, I was on a trip. In order to save money, I planned to stay in a stranger’s house by couchsurfing (沙发客). When I arrived in the host’s city, it was raining hard. My host was very friendly. She invited me to go on a walk with her around her city. At that time, I didn’t even have the right shoes for the bad weather. I wanted to ask her whether she had any shoes for me, but I didn’t want to trouble her. Finally, I said nothing. It was really cold outside, and the heavy rain made my shoes wet. When we got home three hours later, I had lost all the feelings in my feet. That was all because I wouldn’t ask. I wouldn’t ask a simple thing like, “Hey, could you find a pair of good shoes for me ” From that day, I tried hard to get through my fear of asking. It has taken me a long time.
From my experiences, I’ve discovered that people are always happy to offer help. What’s more, I have finally realized that asking isn’t a sign of weakness (脆弱). Asking gives you the opportunity to discover the kindness of others.

Bert won a national prize called Young Heroes for his “green” project. This public-spirited young person was now a university student. His love for insects grew deeper and he was protecting them for the future.
Bert found his love early in life. When he was around 4 or 5, he always loved to watch different insects, especially beautiful swallowtails (凤蝶). One interesting fact he learned about swallowtails was that their bright colors warned hungry animals that they tasted bad. And it was also fun to watch how they came into being. But the reason he really fell in love with them was that they were very accessible. For example, if you wanted to attract (吸引) swallowtails, you planted some zinnias, a kind of bright flowers.
Bert started a zinnia garden at his house, where he raised a large number of swallowtails over the years. With the world’s swallowtail population falling, Bert wanted people to realize that if insects like swallowtails disappeared, so would all the others above them on the food chain. To make the fact clear and easy to understand for other students, he also created a zinnia garden at his junior high school.
Part of the joy for Bert was watching the younger students get excited when running after swallowtails. “Whenever a swallowtail lands on them, the young students will soon fall in love with these cute insects. They develop a new appreciation for them,” he said.
Bert put his efforts into the environmental educational project and made it take flight.

16-year-old Yang Jun’ao, a student from No.1 Middle School in Nanxian County, Hunan Province, invented a robot to help harvest lotus roots (采藕).
“I got the idea when I saw my grandmother, in her 70s, working hard to harvest lotus roots under the hot sun,” Yang said. Sometimes, his grandmother would badly hurt her fingers while using harvesting tools.
To make things easier for his grandmother, he decided to invent a robot that could do the job for her.
With the help of his teacher, Hong Wei, Yang spent almost a year building a model of the robot. The robot can move by itself in the muddy (泥泞的) fields where lotus roots grow. It uses special technology to identify ripe roots by looking at the color of the lotus leaves. Then, its arm carefully cuts the roots without harming them.
While creating the robot, Yang faced challenges like collecting parts for the model, putting them together and using a hot glue gun for connecting. “The first time I used a hot glue gun, my hands were shaking,” Yang laughed. At first, he planned to use rotating blades (旋转叶片) for harvesting lotus roots. But it was hard to find them, so he used more common blades instead.
When Yang showed the robot to his grandmother, she was happy and gave helpful suggestions for improvement. She suggested using a voice player to help locate the robot in thick lotus leaves. “My grandmother’s suggestion reminded me that any invention must be practical to be truly valuable.” said Yang.

With its beautiful art, the cartoon movie Chang An takes us back to the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The stories of Li Bai and Gao Shi come to life before our eyes. It showed us that Gao always took a positive attitude (积极的态度) to different problems and luckily, he also met some good people to help him. In the end, Gao became a great army leader and led his army to win a big fight.

Weeks before Tomb-Sweeping Day this year, hundreds of qingtuan were sold each day. The dessert was still a must-have for many people.
In the southern part of China, eating qingtuan at the beginning of spring is a kind of tradition. Chinese people started to eat it more than 2,000 years ago. It is made of sticky rice (糯米) and red bean paste (红豆沙), and is famous for its softness, freshness and sweetness. People in this area usually put qingtuan on the tombs (墓) of their dead family members to cherish the past memory. Making qingtuan is also a chance for family members to get together at home.

Saying “I am sorry” means apologizing. It is not always easy to apologize to someone, but it can help make things better.
Sometimes we do things we should not do. You might fight with a friend and say bad things to him or her. You might break a rule at school. When you know you did something wrong, apologizing is the right thing to do.
Sometimes accidents happen. You might step on someone’s foot by accident. It is still a good idea to apologize. You can apologize like this, “I wish that did not happen”.
Sometimes you do not start the conflict (纠纷). You might get angry and throw your classmate’s book down the hall if he or she says something bad to you. You might think, “I did not start it, so I don’t have to apologize.” The student was wrong to say bad things to you, but it’s not right for you to throw his or her book. You should also apologize for what you did wrong.
Apologizing when you aren’t sorry does not help much. Take some time to calm down and think about what happened. Then try apologizing. You will feel better about yourself and you will know you did the right thing. So, apology can make the world harmonious (和谐的).

①Do you know DogTV, the first television channel (频道) for dogs It appeared in America in 2012. Now, it is available in 14 countries, including Australia, China, France, the UK, etc.
②Believe it or not, DogTV didn’t start as a TV channel for dogs. The idea for Pet TV came from Ron Levi. To let his cat Charlie have fun while he was out, Ron did some research and began to work with scientists and pet experts to bring his idea to life. To their surprise, dogs showed more interest in different kinds of programs than cats. Pet TV finally became DogTV.
③DogTV was developed to make stay-at-home dogs comfortable and happy. It provides relaxing videos and music for dogs. Each program is for about 3 to 6 minutes. In the morning, programs are to get dogs out of bed and keep moving for the day. In the middle of the day, programs are to calm dogs while they are worried at home alone. Scared programs with pictures and sounds can help them get used to the things for dogs. The channel even has educational programs on health and training.
④A lot of thought goes into the making of every DogTV program. DogTV turned to animal experts to create suitable (合适的) shows for dogs’ seeing and hearing. Dogs are color-blind (色盲的). They can only see blue and yellow, and they can’t see red or green. So the DogTV shows might sound and look a little different to people’s ears and eyes.
