Our Teen Summer Spanish Program is two weeks full of fun and excitement that helps students learn Spanish fast. Our program allows our students to learn from highly-trained, qualified teachers and be absorbed in the language and the culture of Costa Rica.
Features Include:
* Intensive(强化的) daily Spanish classes
* Extracurricular activities in dance, cooking, music, and handiwork
* Outdoor activities including hiking, camping, rafting(皮划艇运动), and ziplining(高空滑索)
* A short stay with a local Costa Rican family
* Volunteer work in needy neighborhoods
Our Teaching Methods:
We are proud to use TPRS—Total Physical Response Storytelling—in our curriculum. This innovative method uses strange and amusing stories to teach new vocabulary, increase fluency, and get students involved by giving them the opportunity to alter the details themselves. Because of the creativity and repeatability, TPRS allows students to learn easily and remember information effortlessly.
Memorizing vocabulary and listening to lectures on grammar are slow and inefficient ways to learn a new language. The best way to truly commit new material to memory is through conversation. In our Spanish classes, students can expect to speak in up to 80% of each class. By speaking in the new language freely and consistently, students can see progress faster because they are using the new grammar and vocabulary that they have learned at the same time. This helps the brain remember the new words and grammar structures for future use, making it much easier to progress.
21.What does the program do
A.It offers weekly Spanish classes.
B.It focuses more on outdoor activities.
C.It gives teachers a chance to receive training.
D.It provides activities about the culture of Costa Rica.
22.What is the best way to learn a new language according to the text
A.Memorizing a wider vocabulary.
B.Speaking more in the new language.
C.Mastering more grammar structures.
D.Writing stories to share with others.
23.What is the purpose of the text
A.To employ experienced Spanish teachers.
B.To hire foreign volunteers for the program.
C.To attract teen foreigners to the program.
D.To introduce language learning methods.

Learning Chinese could be one of the most important decisions you ever made. Chinese is becoming the language to learn in the 21st century. With the world's largest population and the rapidly growing middle class, China stands to become the engine of the world economy in the coming years. This will make learning Chinese very important to people in many industries, or to those of us who wish to visit China or learn about its culture and history.
There is an ongoing effort to modernize the writing system and standardize(使标准化) the language. An increasing number of people learning Chinese are learning Mandarin, so unless you absolutely need to learn another dialect(such as Cantonese), be sure to study Mandarin.
For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn. The vocabulary is wholly unfamiliar and unlike anything we know. In addition, in the Chinese tone system, words are said in the rising tone or the falling tone, which helps to distinguish them. Furthermore, there is the Chinese writing system—a collection of thousands of individual ideograms(表意文字), or symbols, each of which represents a word or an idea. These ideograms have no phonetic value—that is to say, we can't tell how the word is pronounced by how it is written. There is a way to present written Chinese in a phonetic script called pinyin. If you are learning Chinese, you'll be working with this pinyin system, but the beauty of the traditional writing system shouldn't be passed up(放弃). All these factors make learning Chinese difficult for us. Yet, for a determined learner, there's always a way to overcome them.
24.Why is learning Chinese becoming more and more important
A.Chinese engines are very welcome.
B.China has the world's largest population.
C.There are more and more rich people in China.
D.China has become important to the world economy.
25.What can we learn from the text
A.The author thinks Chinese is as difficult as English.
B.The author is interested in the Chinese language and Chinese culture.
C.Foreign languages can play a great role in industrial development.
D.As long as the pinyin system is learned well, one can learn Chinese well.
26.What is the last paragraph mainly about
A.The difficulties of learning Chinese.
B.The advantages of learning Chinese.
C.The Chinese tone system.
D.The Chinese writing system.
27.What would probably be written following this text
A.The sources of Chinese characters.
B.The importance of learning Chinese.
C.The advice on how to learn Chinese.
D.The difficulties of learning other languages.

Reading books and looking at pictures are great, but nothing facilitates(促进)learning like travel, especially for teenagers. Not only do they get to see a world beyond their neighborhoods, but they also get to experience it—feel it, taste it, hear it, and better understand the world.
After nearly four decades in the classroom and traveling the world, Phyllis Duvall Bailey knew this perhaps better than anyone else.
Becoming involved in the work in AKA Sorority, Inc. in the US, she worked to educate children about the United Nations. There was no doubt in Bailey's mind that the lessons would mean so much more if the students could see things by themselves.
Starting in 2015, Bailey, 82, set out to take her students to the UN Headquarters in New York City to give them a “Window to the World”, and thus transformed them into global citizens.
Indeed, it was a great opportunity to give students national and international exposure. Since Bailey saw the students as future leaders, she was desperate to expose them to the UN, its mission, its agendas(议程) and its supporting organizations.
She decided to give$10,000 of her own money to pay for the late June trip, with which she could take 10 students aged 14-17 to have a four-night stay in New York. There, they had guided tours of the UN Headquarters and the Port of New York.
It was Quenyaun Payne's first trip to the city and Taylor Sappington's second. Payne, 17, is a senior at McEachem High School in the state of Georgia, the US. Sappington, 15, is a junior at Therrell High School in Atlanta, Georgia, the US. Both said their visit to the UN was inspiring.
“I realize not only how countries are working together but that they focus on common goals like preventing global warming and keeping the peace,” Sappington said.
Payne commented, “The trip was amazing. I'm so thankful that Mrs. Bailey made it possible.”
Actually, there are a lot of people grateful for the retired teacher's effort. The United Nations Association of Atlanta recently gave Bailey its Humanitarian Award, and the United Nations Association of the USA awarded her the National Education Award.
But Bailey wasn't looking for recognition or even gratitude. Over those four days in New York, she'd already felt it and seen it in the eyes of those 10 teenagers, including Payne and Sappington, who made the trip.
“It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences,” she said.
28.What does the underlined word “this” in Paragraph 2 refer to
A.The benefits of traveling.
B.Good reading habits.
C.New teaching methods.
D.The things teenagers like.
29.How did Bailey help students
A.She offered them volunteer opportunities at the UN.
B.She paid for the trips that helped students see the world.
C.She paid for them to go to school in other countries.
D.She taught them some useful lifelong reading skills.
30.What can we infer from Sappington's words
A.She determines to work for the UN in the future.
B.She shows no interest in global affairs.
C.She finds the trip to the UN greatly instructive.
D.She wants to visit New York City once again.
31.What made Bailey most joyful according to the passage
A.Students' gratitude. B.Social recognition.
C.Students' gains. D.Official awards.

“You're so smart!” This encouraging response to children's math performance is commonly heard. Recently, a new study, conducted by the University of Georgia, found that encouraging children with responses related to their personal characteristics or inborn abilities might weaken their math motivation and achievement over time.
Parents who make comments linking their children's performance to personal characteristics like intelligence are using what's referred to as person responses. In contrast, parents who link their children's actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.
For the study, researchers asked more than 500 parents to report on how they responded to their children's math performance and their math beliefs and goals. Children were assessed in two waves across a year to measure their math motivation and achievement.
The results show that parents who view math ability as changeable are more likely to give process responses focusing on their children's strategy use and efforts rather than their intelligence or other personal characteristics. In contrast, parents who believe math ability is unchangeable and that math failure can't be constructive give more person responses. Parents with high expectations of their children give a combination of both responses. While responses highlighting strategy use and efforts are not related to any achievement outcomes, children who receive more responses to their personal characteristics—in particular, related to failure—are more likely to avoid harder math problems, exhibit higher levels of math anxiety, and score lower on math achievement tests.
Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of response at home. Another recommendation to parents is to think about their own beliefs and goals for their kids and examine how these might lead them to respond in person or process ways. Simply telling parents to avoid talking about math ability may not be enough. Focusing less on how children perform and more on their strategy and enjoyment of math might be a more effective way to enhance motivation.
32.Which of the following is an example of process response
A.You are a lucky dog.
B.Running is in your blood.
C.What works well for your study
D.Why are you such a math genius
33.What can be inferred from the study results
A.Parents prefer to give more process responses.
B.Children are more likely to be affected by math anxiety.
C.Process responses help with children's math achievement.
D.Person responses can discourage children from learning math.
34.What do researchers advise parents to do
A.Restrict person responses.
B.Defend their own beliefs.
C.Stress children's performance.
D.Ignore children's math problems.
35.Which can be a suitable title for the text
A.The Strategy Children Adopt to Learn Math Helps
B.The Way Parents Talk to Children about Math Matters

How to Improve Your Study Habits
Perhaps you are an average student with average intelligence. You do well enough in school, but you probably think you will never be a top student. 36 Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work. Here are some tips for you:
1.Plan your time carefully. Make a list of your weekly tasks. Then make a schedule or chart of your time. Fill in the time for activities such as eating, sleeping, meetings, and classes. Then decide on good, regular time for studying. 37 It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well. Furthermore, it will enable you to plan your activities so that you will have adequate time for both work and play.
2.Find a good place to study. Choose one place as your study area. It may be someplace with a desk and a chair at home or the school library, but it should be comfortable, and it should not have distractions. When you begin to study, you should be able to concentrate on the subject.
3. 38 Listening to what the teacher says in class means less work later. Sit where you can see and hear well. Take notes to help you remember what the teacher says.
4.Review what you have learned regularly. 39 Review important points mentioned in class as well as points you remain confused about. If you review your notes and textbooks regularly, the material will become more meaningful and you will remember it longer. Regular reviews lead to better performance on the test.
5.Develop a good attitude to tests. The purpose of a test is to show what you have learned about a subject. The world won't end if you don't pass a test, so don't worry excessively about a single test. Tests provide more than grades. 40
A.Volunteer to raise questions.
B.Make good use of your time in class.
C.Go over your notes as soon as you can after class.
D.Those who make the best of their time study with more ease.
E.They also let you know that you need to spend more time studying.
F.Of course, studying shouldn't occupy all of the free time on the schedule.
G.This is not necessarily the case;however, you can receive better grades if you want to.

When my family moved to the United States from Colombia, I was 9 years old and knew little about English. As time passed, teachers knew all of their students had adapted to the school, except me. No one called my name, and no one seemed to know I existed. I spent the next month in my new classroom quietly. Fear, loneliness and sadness suddenly flowed over me.
The school never cared that I didn't speak English, but something else was teaching me English. When my aunt drove me to school and picked me up, she always had 106.7 FM(调频) on. It was this station that introduced the English sounds to my young ears.
Because of Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I learned the difference between “witch” and “which”. While watching the TV show South Park, I was attracted by the funny characters. In fact, thanks to pop culture, the world of English became accessible to me while it was far away from me at school.
I also learned how to express my emotions thanks to pop culture. One day at school, we were taking a math quiz and the whole class was quiet. Suddenly, the tip of my pencil broke and I yelled, “My Jesus!” Everyone held their breath in surprise and I laughed to myself because something at that moment told me that I had just learned my first bad words in English.
I appeared to be embarrassed at that moment, but in my heart I felt happy.
Four months passed before the school placed me into an ESL program.

根据第一段中的“Our program allows...culture of Costa Rica.”
根据第一段中的“China stands to become the engine of the world economy...its culture and history.”
根据第一段中的“to those of us who wish to visit China or learn about its culture and history”及第三段作者对汉语拼音和汉语文字体系的理解可知,作者对汉语和中国文化很感兴趣。
根据最后一段中的“For native English speakers Chinese is one of the most difficult and most different languages to learn.”
根据最后一段最后一句“Yet, for a determined learner, there's always a way to overcome them.”
再结合第二段中的“After...traveling the world”可以推断,this指代旅游的好处。
根据倒数第二段第一句“But Bailey wasn't looking for recognition or even gratitude.” 根据尾段中的“It has been a real joy to get to see and watch their reaction to new experiences”可知,Bailey认为看到并观察他们对新体验的反应是一种真正的乐趣。
根据第二段中“In contrast, parents who link their children's actions, such as efforts or strategy use, to their performance are using process responses.”
根据最后一段中的“Because person responses predict poor math adjustment in children over time, researchers suggest parents limit this type of response at home.”
所以B项“The Way Parents Talk to Children about Math Matters (父母与孩子谈论数学的方式很重要)”最适合作为文章的题目,故选B项。
36.G 根据上句中的“but you probably think you will never be a top student”和下句“Yes, even students of average intelligence can be top students without additional work.”可知,G项中的“This is not necessarily the case”和“you can receive better grades if you want to”分别承接上文,引起下文。
根据下句“It's important to set aside time for relaxation, hobbies, and entertainment as well.”
39.C 本段的主题句为“Review what you have learned regularly.”。根据下文的“Review important points mentioned in class...”
根据上句“Tests provide more than grades.”

One possible version:
Dear friends,
In order to observe World Book Day, our school held various activities.
A variety of books were on show in the playground in alphabetical order, which was convenient for us to look through. Some students who had read many classic books shared their wonderful experiences about reading at the class meetings. In addition, in the lecture hall an inspiring speech on reading original books was given by a professor from a local university.
As for me, not only did I benefit a lot from these activities, but I got to know the importance of reading. Good books are treasures of good words and golden thoughts, which will become our constant companions.
Thank you for listening.
第二节
One possible version:
I appeared to be embarrassed at that moment, but in my heart I felt happy. After all, I began to speak English in public. And after that, the teachers began to pay attention to me, and sometimes they asked me to answer some easy questions. Some classmates came to me after class and played with me. Much to my joy, I made some friends and even was invited to their party and I learned to choose some presents for them. Everyone seemed to know I existed. With teachers and friends around, I made great progress in English.
Four months passed before the school placed me into an ESL program. At that time, I was still speaking broken English but I could make myself understood. Finally, I learned how to speak and write English at a more advanced level. Now I can speak English freely and I have made a lot of friends. Fear, loneliness and sadness don't exist. I owe it all to pop culture. I still like to turn FM 106.7 on when I am free.
