It seems every country has one major event on the annual calendar. Here we've boiled the choices down to the absolute top events to add to your bucket list.
Montreux Jazz Festival, Switzerland
This over 50-year-old good time held on the shores of Lake Geneva is the second largest jazz festival in the world. It's more than jazz, though. You'll find broad-ranging acts from pop to rock and blues. And, best of all, a large portion of the performances are free, in keeping with the festival's purpose to make music accessible to anyone.
Palio di Siena, Italy
Twice a year, the Tuscan town of Siena recalls its past in the Middle Ages with a bareback horse race. Each of the 17 horses in the race and each of their course riders, represent one of the city's districts, adding to the roar(咆哮) of the crowd. And to make things even more entertaining, riders are allowed to do anything to their opponents other than pull their reins(缰绳), so expect as many falls as thrills.
Saint Patrick's Day, Ireland
Saint Patrick's Day is celebrated anywhere in the world where there is an Irish group, but there's no better place than Dublin, Ireland. This four-day festival in March is packed with a program of music, performing arts, literature, tours and food events. Centered around the national holiday, this festival of Irish pride, achievements and talents will be well supplied with Irish cheer.
Harbin International Ice and Snow Festival, China
Harbin is transformed into a winter wonderland with huge ice sculptures across the city, decorated with lights and lasers, drawing thousands of artists and art enthusiasts alike. It's funny—as a writer, it's easy to share your knowledge, or your personal stories with an unknown listener of many. You think your friends may not read your articles. But as I began to talk more openly about Chinese traditions and food, I learned that they were interested, curious and really hungered for them. Their interest and curiosity grew and the culmination of their interest and curiosity was this past Spring Festival. They would like to spend Spring Festival Eve with me. I accepted their request. It was an inconvenient Monday. I'd never had Spring Festival Eve when anyone but my father cooked.
I took the day off for the dinner preparation. I drove 45 minutes out of town to a Cantonese BBQ shop where I bought a whole roast duck and watched, fascinated, as it was changed into bite-size pieces. I shopped at a faraway international market like a madwoman, looking for Chinese vegetables and other food that would be new to my guests. I called my dad, asking for some pointers on how to make dishes I'd never made. I texted him pictures of the sea fish I picked out, and the red clothing they threw on for luck.
In just a few hours, I cooked a dinner of 15 dishes for six friends who cared enough about me and my culture and came over on a cold winter Monday night to celebrate my tradition with me. We drank, ate and toasted the beautiful night. Laughter of joy filled my room. And that night, I felt what it was to be loved for our culture as well as our food.

The Chinese New Year has been welcomed in Britain with its biggest ever program of events and celebrations.
From London's Trafalgar Square to major cities across Britain, tens of thousands of British people have joined Chinese communities in celebrating the arrival of the New Year. In Manchester there was a dragon parade, led by a very impressive 54-meter-long dragon and ending in Chinatown where there was traditional Chinese entertainment, more than 6,000 lanterns, street food villages and a fireworks display. Celebrations also took place in Liverpool, Birmingham, Durham, Edinburgh, Leeds and Newcastle.
Academic Dr Wu Kegang says that the Chinese New Year event in Britain is now bigger than ever and it is growing every year. When Wu arrived in Britain 26 years ago from Guangdong, the first thing he noticed was that the Chinese New Year was celebrated mainly in towns and cities with big Chinese communities. “You had to go to London's Chinatown to join your countrymen in celebrating, or to Chinatowns in places like Liverpool and Manchester for events almost only held for Chinese people,” Wu recalled.
“Now it is so different, and we are seeing communities all over the country taking part alongside their Chinese populations,” he said. “It is clear to me that the celebrations will continue to grow in Britain. Ah, the graduation day. Family parties. Student awards. Excited parents busy taking photos. Limo(豪华轿车) rides to the ceremony. All in celebration of years of hard work and the exciting things to come after primary school.
Wait, what Yes, primary school graduation ceremonies are becoming more popular than ever. And at my school, the sixth grade graduation is a serious business.
A few weeks before the sixth grade graduation, I received a special email from a parent.
“I would like to know if my boy is going to be the only kid not receiving an award on the graduation day, because I am going to save him from the embarrassment and favoritism that have been shown all year and will not have him at the graduation.”
Awards are part of the end-of-year excitement at my school and the hardest thing I have to deal with all year. Picking five out of fourteen students to be called before the whole school seems like a heartbreak for the other nine. Someone is always going to be left out and clearly, the parents feel the pressure.
I chose not to answer the email, knowing the email was sent under pressure. The boy in question would receive an award, not because of his mother's email, but because of his great achievement.
On the day of the ceremony, that boy and four others were awarded and they posed(摆好姿势) for a group photograph in new formal clothes. I sent my congratulations to all the students—without considering their achievements—on having an excellent year and wished them well at their new schools.
But as another year's graduation is coming soon, I'm left feeling uneasy. Not to take away anything from my present class of wonderful students as they prepare to head out to new schools, I believe that such ceremonies should be held at the end of high school and college. Is it too much or too soon to celebrate our children and their achievements

第二节(满分25分)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Last year, I traveled from the US to my childhood village in Zimbabwe for the Christmas holiday.
The whole village feels very much like one happy family get-together when people from nearby cities or neighboring countries celebrate the festive season in their childhood homes.
On Christmas Day, I woke up to the familiar(熟悉的) sound of my mother calling my name and knocking on my door. As is morning tradition on that day, everyone was preparing gifts for the festival. I quickly put on my favourite clothes. Along with my parents and two brothers, we walked a little more than a mile to the small village store. On our way there, my brother wisely advised me to ask for drinks as goods were likely to run out because of high need from the holiday.
When I stepped into that familiar small store that still smells of childhood, it looked as if it were frozen in time. The shelves were stocked with the same village basics—cooking oil, salt, bread, candy, milk, stationery, matches, candles...
As I was placing my drink orders, two young boys about 5 and 8 years old walked in with big smiles. Their clothes were oversized, old and tattered(破烂的).
The older brother emptied his pockets, placed a handful of coins on the counter(柜台), and cheerfully explained they had been sent to buy food for Christmas. He asked for “two loaves of bread, cooking oil, milk and...” Before he could finish, the younger brother added, “Our mother said we could buy candy with the change.”
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
“It is only 24c change left. What would you like to buy ” said the shopkeeper.

The two boys clapped hands(拍手), a traditional way of saying thanks to me.

第四部分 写作
第一节
One possible version:
The Dragon Boat Festival, one of the traditional Chinese festivals, dates back over 2,000 years. It is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month according to the Chinese calendar.
The festival is best-known for its dragon boat races, especially in the southern places where there are many rivers and lakes. Besides, people always cook and eat rice dumplings made of glutinous rice and wrapped by bamboo or reed leaves to celebrate it. People celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival in honor of Qu Yuan, a great poet of ancient China.
In my opinion, it is of great necessity to attach importance to our traditional festivals, for they're part of our culture.
第二节
One possible version:
“It is only 24c change left. What would you like to buy ” said the shopkeeper. The shopkeeper was slightly annoyed that the kids had stopped my conversation with him. They pointed at different candies behind the glass display. “Five of those!” the younger brother said. “And five of the yellow ones, too. My sister likes them.” The shopkeeper said, “That is more than plenty for the change.” “It's OK. They can have whatever they want,” I said with a smile. “It's Christmas Day today, and you can add it to my order.”
The two boys clapped hands(拍手), a traditional way of saying thanks to me. I told them to get whatever they wanted. “Can we add five candles, for Mum, Dad, my sister, my brother and me, too ” the older brother politely asked me. I nodded, and the two brothers started dancing with joy. In all, their order cost me less than $5. But I could tell from their grinning faces that I might as well have been their Santa. With my drinks, I walked to my parents and brothers. We all smiled, seeing those happy figures gradually disappear in our vision.
