(2023广东惠州中学期中)
The success of Blue Origin's space tourism flights has caused concerns among the public. Many say it is a rich person's game that is unnecessary when Earth badly needs help.
For Jane Smith, co-founder of Space View, the industry is not preventing Earth from help, but helping its residents better understand their world.
“Space exploration has played an important role in forming our understanding of our planet,” Smith said in an interview. “The most downloaded image in history is Earthrise that was taken in 1968 by Apollo astronauts as they circled the moon. Taking the photo was not on their schedule of activities but they were so struck by the scene that they rushed to record it. That one photograph helped mankind to see Earth as a planet in space, and inspired an environmental movement.”
Space View, founded in 2019, is a firm using a giant balloon to send humans into the stratosphere(平流层). It is designing a luxurious capsule(豪华太空舱) that fits six passengers, who can relax in seats or enjoy a snack while flying 20 miles above Earth.
Smith explained that eventually, millions of people would have exciting space experience. Tickets for a ride through Space View currently cost $125,000 a seat, but Smith said the “long-term vision is to bring the price down significantly”. “A ticket price of, say, $30,000-$40,000 will make the space trip affordable to many millions of people,” she added.
When asked about the public comments, Smith answered, “When people visit space and experience our Earth from that fantastic point, they connect deeply with our planet and the singular human family that inhabits it. It broadens their perspectives(视角) and they return with a deepened understanding of social and environmental causes.”

(2024北京中国农业大学附属中学月考)
Gardening 380 Kilometers Above Earth
Astronauts have to go through physical, psychological, and technical training. They also go through training in how to care for plants. These “astronaut gardeners” share their work and living space with plants.
Taking seeds and plants along on a trip isn't a new idea. As space trips become longer, it will be necessary to grow food in space. 1 Because of this, it's not practical to send everything needed for a long journey, only to be used once and thrown away.
Plants can have many uses on a space journey. They can provide more fresh things. 2 Also, plants can help to make air quality better because they produce oxygen. They can improve the quality of the air inside the spacecraft—the only air the astronauts can breathe.
3 Due to the lack of gravity in space, the oxygen that the plants produce stays around the plants. This can actually kill them, so fans are needed to circulate the air. Without gravity, roots don't “know” how to grow down, leaves don't “know” how to grow up, and water doesn't easily travel up from the roots to the leaves. 4 Besides, soil is too heavy to send into space, and special liquid gels(胶滞体) are used to help plants grow.
Scientists are also working on the plants themselves. They are trying to make plants grow more rapidly and grow with less water and light in space, and they are looking for ways to make plants more resistant to disease. 5 Imagine that deserts may one day provide lots of fresh food for local people, saving transportation costs. Similarly, plants that are resistant to disease could provide an important food supply. With the world's population now at more than eight billion, our astronaut gardeners may help discover ways to feed those billions.
A.Every plant grown in space must have several uses.
B.However, there are challenges of growing plants in space.
C.Such methods may result in improvements back here on Earth.
D.The cost of taking anything into space is about $22,000 per kilogram.
E.Specialized containers are being developed to help the plants grow correctly.
F.Astronauts will welcome the addition of fruit and vegetables to their diet of dry foods.
G.Currently all oxygen is taken aboard in tanks and then caught again so it can be reused.

(2024福建宁德五校联合体期中联考)
阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
A couple of years ago, I had the pleasure of teaching a young couple to dive(潜水) in Thailand on one of my favorite reefs(礁). The weather conditions were perfect, with mild currents and the excellent sight of the beautiful ocean and the bright, vivid corals. Even with their masks on, I could see the smiles on my students' faces.
The dive couldn't have gone better. However, things changed as we made our way back to the boat. As we swam back along the reef, I noticed the current changing. As it did, huge quantities of trash and plastic began to flood the area. I saw small reef fish swimming among the straw, plastic bags and other bits of rubbish. I noticed that some of the fish were pecking(啄) at the plastic. By the time we got back onboard the boat, there were bits of plastic floating all around us. It looked more like a trash site than the ocean.
When I got home, the first thing I did was go online and research plastic pollution in the ocean. I was surprised to find out that over the past decade, divers and beach lovers have seen a lot of changes in the oceans. Even very remote locations were suddenly filled with plastic and other chemicals. Plastics were entering our oceans at an alarming rate—up to 12 million tons each year. This huge amount of plastic was wreaking havoc(严重危害) not only on the environment, but also on the marine animals that lived in the ocean, such as sea turtles and seabirds. Some of them were sadly mistaking the pieces of plastic for food. Pollution has brought our oceans to the point of disaster, and unless we make a great change, then our oceans and all of its living things will be at risk.
Since that unforgettable plastic-polluted dive, I have become an ocean supporter and spend my days trying to get the message out there about just how harmful ocean pollution is, not only to marine life, but also to mankind.
注意:续写词数应为150个左右。
Then the idea came to me: I could appeal to my fellow divers to take action.
I decided to take it a step further and try to stop those companies producing single-use plastics.

One possible version:
Then the idea came to me: I could appeal to my fellow divers to take action. I turned to the local divers, who immediately started supporting me. The following months saw us collecting pieces of plastic that we saw floating past and putting them in the pocket of our diving suits. If we were walking along the beach, we were sure to collect all the plastic that we saw on the sand. The effects were noticeable almost immediately. Happily, I could see the beach returning to its original beauty. However, I knew that these individual actions weren't enough to stop the plastic pollution crisis unless companies stopped producing so much plastic in the first place.
I decided to take it a step further and try to stop those companies producing single-use plastics. One way in particular stood out because it was easy to perform, yet its effects would be far-reaching. Whenever I found a piece of branded plastic waste in the ocean, on a river bank or beach, I took a picture of it and posted it on social media, presented the brand, and used the note “Is This Yours ” Luckily, since I started this approach, I have reached a dozen companies in this way and got more and more followers. We may be limited in what we can do, but I believe that a single spark can start a prairie fire.
