In May, 2023, Joy Kochar and other students got together in Columbus Park, New York City. They set up a table with lemonade, cookies, and origami figures for sale. They were hoping to raise money for their school to solve a big problem: many spotted lantern fies (斑点灯笼蝇) had recently appeared in the area.
Their goal was to raise $200. That was the cost of the
equipment the kids needed to catch spotted lantern flies.
They only made about $75. So they decided to hold more
activities to collect money.
Since 2014, spotted lantern fie s have been seen across the eastern United States.* They are harmful to many plants. State officials have encouraged people to kill spotted lanternflies.
Joy saw many spotted lantern flies in her school courtyard. She decided to do something, so she started a club called Squash. Its goal is to kill spotted lantern fie s around the school. More than 20 students have joined.
Joy did some research and found a plant named milkweed. It is good food for some insects but it is toxic (有毒的) to spotted lantern flies. Joy thought using milkweed would be a better way to kill spotted lanternflies.

Schools and kindergartens in Guangdong Province have
been asked to ban (禁止) the recently popular toy knives
known as "radish knives" and other similar things because
they might be dangerous to students, according to a notice
from the Department of Education of Guangdong Province.*
"Radish knives" look like small plastic switchblades (弹簧刀), and kids like them because they can flick (轻弹) them open just like a fidget spinner(指尖陀螺). Though the blade(刀片) is made of plastic, it could still cause harm if it touches the skin. Parents are worried that these toys might cause kids to fight and could be dangerous for their safety.
The notice said that schools and kindergartens should teach students about safety and ask them not to buy, carry, or play with toys like "radish knives". They also need to check stores nearby and report to the local governments if they find any of these toys being sold.
Besides, parents should watch out for these toys because they could be dangerous to their kids. They should choose safe toys and things that their children need every day.
Experts and officials have expressed worries about the increasing popularity of "radish knives" and the attitudes and behaviors of kids.
An expert said that selling toys with violence could be more harmful than the toys themselves, and it might break the law.

A primary school in southern China introduced a homework circuit breaker (断路器). It told students to stop doing homework after 9:30 pm to make sure that they have enough sleep. This has sparked (引发) discussion on the best way to reduce study stress on students.
The school in Nanning, capital of the Guangxi Zhuang
Autonomous Region, said recently that students would not be
punished for homework left unfinished after 9:30 pm.
Many schools and education authorities in the country are taking measures to follow the national "double reduction" policy ("双减"政策), which aims to reduce students' homework and extracurricular(课外的) learning.*
Some people thought that the rule could help children get more sleep, but many others were not sure if it was the best way to really reduce their study stress.
Xiong Bingqi, director of the 21st Century Education Research Institute, said cooperation (合作)from parents will be needed if the measure is to work, because some ask their children to do extra homework.
Since the "double reduction" policy was carried out in 2021, most primary and secondary schools in China have reduced students' homework.
According to a notice from the Ministry of Education in 2021, primary school students should have 10 hours of sleep a night, with middle school students expected to sleep for 9 hours.
"Not many children have reached the standard (标准) because some parents pay more attention to their children's grades rather than helping them develop good time-management habits," Xiong said.
So it is a long way to go to reduce the study stress of the students.

D. Because more and more students can't get good grades.
13 .Which of the following is TRUE about the "double reduction" policy
A. Plenty of students don't like this policy.
B. It has been carried out for five years in China.

Primary school students in Changsha, Hunan Province, have started to learn the Changsha dialect (方言) in an elective (选修的) course newly offered by the school this term.
More than 20 third-grade students from the Affiliated
Primary School of Hunan Normal University have signed up
for the course. Many language professors at universities
such as Hunan Normal University, Central South University
and Changsha Normal University are teaching the course.
Besides the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, students will also get knowledge about the idioms, nursery rhymes (童谣), figures of speech and culture behind the dialect, according to Luo Xinru, Chinese language professor at Hunan Normal University and one of the teachers of the course.
As our country has spent a lot of energy promoting (推动) standard Mandarin (标准普通话), lots of young children have not learned how to speak local dialects, she said. That's why the country has started to protect different language resources in recent years, she added.
The Ministry of Education carried out the National Language Resource Protection Project in 2015 to do some surveys and better protect its language resources. Our country has set up the largest language resource center in the world, according to the ministry.
Luo said promoting Mandarin and using dialects are not contradictory(相互矛盾的) and children have the ability to speak them at the same time.
"Dialect protection is very important and different dialects which carry different cultures and values should not and will not disappear,* "she said. "We do not expect all children taking the course to learn perfect Changsha dialect, but they should understand the importance of different dialects and perhaps be willing to dive into the research and protection of them as they grow older."
