阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C、D 四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Sharon, Aged 22
The most important thing to keep in mind when going into high school is to be yourself. Besides, I don’t know what your middle school was like, but high school teachers will not care about things such as how much homework you already have for one night. It’s best to just learn to deal with things and manage your time wisely so you can achieve everything you need to do.
Frank, Aged 21
I think almost every kid feels both anxious and excited before their first day. You will probably love it. I know I did. You should join in some sports or activities that will make your high school experience more enjoyable. Good luck!
David, Aged 19
I’m not going to lie. The first day is kind of frightening. But you’ll get used to it. Don’t be afraid of anyone; upperclassmen will pick on you more if you let them know you’re afraid. Just take it easy. Making some friends and staying with them will greatly help you get used to high school quickly. After the first week it’s really not bad at all. Don’t worry.
Eddie, Aged 20
When I started high school, I was really nervous too, especially since I had been homeschooled all through middle school and didn’t really know anyone. I suppose the best advice would be to just relax. The first couple of days can be a little bit hard, but things will become easier before you know it.
21. What can we infer from Sharon’s words about high school
A. Teachers are quite strict.
C. Teachers provide little care for students. 22. Who mentions the importance of friends
B. Students often stay up at night.
D. Students should make good use of their time.
A. David. B. Frank. C. Sharon. D. Eddie
23. How did Eddie feel on his first day of high school
A. Excited. B. Worried. C. Bored. D. Relaxed.
B
It’s school time again! You’re probably feeling excited and maybe a little sad for the vacation is over. Some
kids feel nervous on the first day of school because of all the new things: new teachers, new friends, and maybe

even a new school. Luckily, these “new” worries only last for a little while. Let’s find out more about going back to school.
Most teachers kick off the school year by introducing themselves and talking about what you’ll be doing that year. Some teachers give students a chance to tell something about themselves to the rest of the class. When teachers do the talking on the first day, they often go over classroom rules, so you’ll know what’s allowed and what’s not. Pay close attention, so you’ll know if you need to raise your hand to ask a question and what the rules are about visiting the restroom.
You might already know a lot of people in your class on the first day. But it’s a great day to make new friends, so try to say “hello” to the kids you know and new ones that you don’t. Make the first move and you’ll be glad about what you did and so will your new friends!
Most teachers let you pick your own seat on the first day, but by the second or third morning, they’ll have mapped out a seating plan. It’s a good idea to write down where your seat is in your notebook so you don’t forget.
Here are a few final tips for a fantastic(奇异的) first day: Get enough sleep. Have a healthy breakfast. Try your best. Develop good work habits, like writing down your assignments(作业) and handing in your homework on time. Take your time with schoolwork. If you don’t understand something, ask the teacher.
24. What does the underlined phrase “kick off” most probably mean in the second paragraph
A. end B. start C. discuss D. finish
25. Which of the following is TURE according to the passage
A. All students feel excited about a new term.
B. All teachers let students pick their seats.
C. New school worries do not last very long.
D. Being hardworking helps make new friends.
26. If students have any questions, what are they suggested to do
A. to ask their teachers B. to write them down C. to ask their parents D. to help with each other 27. What’s the author’s purpose in writing this passage
A. To provide students with some advice on starting a new school term. B. To encourage students to work harder in a new school term.
C. To teach children the importance of starting school.
D. To introduce a way to improve students’ learning ability.

C
If you want to become a fluent English speaker you should take some advice. There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.
Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you come across, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.
As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you can listen every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and become skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practice listening.
For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes.
If you follow these pieces of advice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will become perfect.
28. According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills
A. Reading and listening. B. Reading and writing.
C. Writing and speaking. D. Speaking and listening.
29. To improve your reading, what should you do when you read
A. to look up all the new words in the dictionary.
B. to think about what you are reading actively.
C. to spend more time studying grammar.
D. To copy as many words and sentences as possible.
30. Which one can replace the underlined phrase “come across” in Paragraph 2
A. meet by accident B. discover C. find on purpose D. look for
31. Which of the following about listening is true according to the passage
A. When you become skillful at your listening, you can catch up on your reading.
B. If you have enough input in your mind, it’s not necessary to practice listening. C. It is not advised to take notes, because it will take up too much and affect listening. D. VOA or BBC is a good listening resource if you do quite well in listening.

D
Recently, 14-year-old Harini Logan won the Scripps National Spelling Bee in the United States. She correctly spelled 22 words during 90 seconds. Most Americans, however, would find it difficult to spell any of these words!
From an early age, native English speakers know there are clear differences between how words are pronounced and how they are spelled. But they do not know that the difference is unique to English among major languages. Languages like Italian or Finnish can be spelled more easily because each letter matches to one sound. Students studying these languages can have 90 percent reading accuracy (正确率) after the first year.
In English, many letters have two or more sounds. This is why even after years of learning, students of English are still far below Italian or Finnish students in reading accuracy.
English started as a Germanic language. It is most closely connected to German and Dutch, especially in grammar and basic vocabulary. During the Norman attack in the 12th century, Old English was spoken but French was used in government and legal documents. As a result, more French and Latin words entered the English language.
The printing machine was invented in the late 1400s. This helped to establish English spelling and strengthen the connection between how English is spoken and how it is written. The English of today is how the language was written at the time.
However, the spoken language started to change in the 1500s with the pronunciation of all long vowels (元音), especially in southern England. For example, the word “bite” was pronounced closer to “beet” in 1400, before changing through the years to its present sound. The effect was that the English language had old spellings, but new sounds.
English has 26 letters, but over 44 different sounds depending on the difference of spoken English. There are several sounds from only one letter. For example, the letter “C” can sound like an “S” as in “city.” And it also sounds like a “K” as in “cat.”
32. Compared with English, what is special with Italian
A. It has simpler sentences. C. It is easier to spell.
B. It expresses more exactly.
D. It is made up of fewer letters.
33. How did the printing machine affect the English language
A. It established English spelling. C. It changed the spoken language.
B. It made written English simple. D. It separated spellings from sounds.
34. What did the spoken language change in the 1500s result in
A. Spellings matched sounds. C. Old spellings were changed.
B. English was easier to learn.
D. New sounds were formed.

Peter had an English spelling test today. His teacher, Mr White, promised to offer prizes to those who get 100. Peter reviewed the spelling of each word carefully last night. While having the test, Peter wrote every word on his test paper quickly and confidently.
After marking the test papers, Mr. White said, “Three of you win a prize today for excellent test scores. Peter, David and Mary get 100 on the spelling test!”
Mr. White praised them. Meanwhile, he gave the three students each a dictionary. Peter was so excited that he held it high when his classmates cheered.
After Mr. White gave the test paper back, Peter had a look at the words, feeling proud of his spelling. All of a sudden, the word “contribution” confused him. It didn't seem right. Peter began to compare it with the one on the word list. It turned out that he had spelled it wrong.
Staring at the red sign “100” which was written on his test paper, Peter was lost in thought. After a while, he remembered a lesson Mum used to teach him,“We ought to be an honest person.”
