Charles Darwin is a well-known naturalist and biologist. Born in 1809 in England. His most famous work is "On the Origin of Species," published in 1859. In this book, he proposed the theory of evolution by natural selection, which suggests that species change over time through a process of natural selection. This theory caused controversy at the time, but it has since become widely accepted in the scientific community.
Darwin also made important contributions to the study of geology, botany, and zoology. He was a prolific writer and published many books and articles throughout his career.

Activity 2
Read the text about Darwin and tell us your understanding of the title.
journey:
an act of travelling from one place to another, especially when they are far apart (尤指长途)旅行,行程
The title may indicate that the work leading to the discovery takes quite a long time and great efforts, determination and perseverance.

Darwin’s journey on the Beagle inspired his Theory of Evolution.
Darwin went on a journey to confirm his theory that humans had evolved over time.

DEVELOP IDEAS
PROPOSE A THEORY
Why did Darwin not publish his Theory of Evolution until 1859, about twenty years after his discovery
It may need to collect more information and materials to support the theory.
He may be worried about being restricted by the traditional social ideas of that time.
At that, Darwin was very young, and he may worry about the publisn of the theory would harm his future.

Why were many people “shocked” by Darwin’s theory
At that time, many people believed that all species had appeared on Earth at the same time and had not changed since.
...
It was a completely new idea - a theory of evolution. Darwin explained this theory in his book, On the Origin of Species. It was not published until 1859 and immediately caused a storm. Many people refused to believe that living things, including humans, had evolved from lower forms of life. They were shocked. But Darwin's scientific studies were so convincing that more and more people started to believe his theory.
