Lek rushed through the crowded streets to his parents’ restaurant. Out of breath, he reached for some banana leaves without a break—he might have time to make a Krathong (水灯).
Tonight was Loy Krathong (水灯节), a Thai festival. When the festival came, people would send out their Krathongs with lighted candles. They hoped that their Krathongs would take away last year’s problems, leaving wishes for the new year.
This week, Lek had practiced using a pole (杆子) to put Krathongs into the water as his brother Tong did. Their sister, Dao, was sick, lying in bed. Perhaps a wish would take away her illness!
Lek made a Krathong with Tong’s help. The Krathong looked like a small boat. After a while, the night fell. They put the Krathong, a candle and a match into a bag. Then they left the restaurant. Lek took the bag and Tong held a pole. They pushed through the crowd and went to a small river near their home.
It took them five minutes to get to the riverbank. They looked around to find a good place. Lek lit the candle and put it into the Krathong. Then he used the pole to put the Krathong into the water with the help of Tong.
Lek understood that only a wish could not make Dao better, but it gave him hope. While the small boat was sailing (航行) away, he made the same wish over and over again—May Dao get well soon.

More than half of the world’s population will be overweight or obese (肥胖的) by 2035 if action is not taken on the problem according to a new report. The report was shared by the World Obesity Federation (WOF).
The report said that from 2020 to 2035, the world’s population considered to be obese will increase from 14 percent to 24 percent. In 2020, 38 percent of the world’s population was considered overweight or obese. And obesity rates are expected to rise the most among children.
